    1. Indian history is difficult to talk about, especially in this period - it is basically a continent of its own, things are happening all over the place and not everything can be covered in one video. In this one, we largely ignored European colonialism, local cultural and social upheaval, and much more. The good thing is, we are here to stay and will cover more topics pertaining to the history of India and neighboring countries. A few videos on the history of India are in the description, check them out.
    2. There will be a mini-series covering the campaigns of Nader shah, it is currently being researched.
    3. The next few months we will focus on finishing the series that we started in order to have a clean(er) slate in 2021.

In the 1750s it was clear that the Moghul empire was going to fall apart. Marathas, Durrani, British and French were battling to dominate India. Everyone put their money on Marathas or Durrani while no one thought that the British would eventually win. When the Battle of Plassey in 1757 took place, none of the regional Indian powers thought it more than some Bengal dynastic dispute and totally underestimated the threat the British posed. This was one of the main reasons why the British won out at so little cost: no one thought they were a real threat until it was too late.

Marathas made several strategic mistakes prior to this battle. They were experts in guerrilla warfare but chose to face enemy in field battle (jat king suggested them not to), they kept thousands to pilgrims with them which costed them mobility and moral burden, their leader was less experienced, marathas didn't have good allies in North india, their reinforcement didn't arrive in time due to irresponsible action of their king. You can't disregard such basic principles of war and expect to win with sheer ferocity.

"jat king suggested them not to".
This is completely wrong. The Jats were former allies of Marathas but the two had become enemies because of Jats reluctance to pay 25-50% tax imposed by marathas on all provinces. The Marathas had sent a threatening note to the Jats telling them they will be coming for the Jats once they are done dealing with Abdali. As a result, the Jats had allied with abdali and provided him with crucial intel about the makeup of maratha forces and the French weaponry held by them. They also slaughtered many maratha escapees once the battle was over.
"What, have I come from the south relying on your strength? I will do what I like. You may stay here or go back to your own place. After overthrowing the Abdali, I shall come to reckoning with you." --- Overconfident Marathas to Jats and Rajputs

This is just absolutely amazing and would love to see more coverage of the Peshwai and more videos in general on this period. Maybe you can do a special episode on Baji Rao I? Or the Anglo-Maratha wars also have some interesting campaigns, battles, betrayal and generally a lot of political intrigue going on.
As to the video itself, excellent narration and a quite precise account. I'd just like to make one minor addition of a key event that played a big role in the collapse of the Maratha center towards the end of the battle itself. The Peshwa's eldest son, Vishwas Rao, was a young but highly capable warrior and commander, greatly beloved by both his troops as well as his uncle, Sadashiv Rao Bhau. Between 130-2pm, when the battle at the center was at its peak and the Marathas still had a chance of turning things around, it is said that Vishwas Rao was killed either by an arrow, small-arms fire or a stray cannonball (the exact cause of his death has never been established). The Maratha warriors lost heart very soon after that and the will to carry on fighting started to dissipate. Sadashiv Rao meanwhile is said to have been so aggrieved by his beloved nephew's death that he dismounted from his elephant and led a ferocious but ultimately futile charge into the Afghan lines, ultimately dying and leaving the Maratha center leaderless at the most crucial point.

You skip a lot of details but you’re not far from the truth. The Durranis lost out despite victory and Balaji Baji Rao was also going there with a major contingent. Abdali would’ve faced a rout if he stayed. It did weaken Maratha strength for a short while(Haider Ali overthrew the Wodeyars within mere days of Panipat) but the real effect was in the Maratha system. Mahadaji Shinde and Nana Fadnavis did manage to re-establish Maratha dominance but it came at the cost of devolution of power. When different Subedars became Rajas in their own right and the centralized power of the Peshwas and the Chhatrapathi weakened, it enabled the British and the French to enter and hijack the system the Marathas had put in place. The real tragedy of Panipat was that the Marathas could no longer put up a united front against external aggressors and had become dependent on mercenaries for their army. The different Rajas started caring more about the interests of the kingdom than those of the empire and there were few leaders who could think of the interests of the Marathas as a whole. They also lost out in terms of capable leadership. It’s one of those “could have beens” in history.

despite of ruling from pune in the fucking deep south, They still managed to conquer pashtun afghan lands as far as peshawar , also literally bordered kabul by 1759. If raghunath rao wouldn't postphone his invasion of kabul, Afghans would have surely been defeated. Because this gave them time to regain their ethnic lands and invade maratha empire.
Note-Marathas merely invaded afghanistan to create a fear in their hearts, which they accomplished, this is known from the fact that after panipat, Afghans neither crossed the sutlej river nor they invaded india ever again.
Marathas continued dominating north india until the 2nd anglo maratha war.
The task of "subduing" afghans would be done by the sikhs some years later, who would sack peshawar and end up burning kabul and jalalabad, the capital of afghans by 1839 itself.

Decisive cavalry charges against all odds, usage of light artillery pieces against troops, not yet realising you could put together all sorts of artillery in single battery, and make holes in the enemies formation instead of using them piecemeal. Also examples of infantry holding its own against cavalry, mass volleys of musket-fire etc. Even the strategic movements of both armies before the battle reminds of a K&G Thirty years vid I watched a while back. Surprisingly, the Maratha cavalry did so well after getting pushed back where most would have routed at that point, everyone thinks so badly of cavalry charging against well placed infantry except when it works.

What a load of bs, almost every single battle the Arab Muslim had to fight was against superior numbers and much better equipped forces. Its funny even though the Sassanid and Byzantine have been waring for years, when you look at the forces they were able to bring up against the Arabs, they still were numerically superior and much better equipped. Furthermore if this was any other scenario, people would say the Sassanids Byzantine troops gained much needed fighting experience while fighting each other but since they lost, you get bs like the comment above. History is clear both the Byzantine and or the Sassanids on paper, should have been able to destroy the Muslim forces on their own.

@King Wiwuz IV The fact is that you are not looking at the facts and making up your own so called common sense. Historically speaking what you said simply goes against reality, if the Sassanids were in a defensive state from the beginning you wouldn't see the superior numbers and equipment. They may have gone into a defensive state once they were beaten on almost all encounters against the Muslims. This, to me, was a war even more devastating than the second battle of Panipat which Hemu lost to Akbar. Marathas had recovered almost all the territory lost over centuries to Mughals and could've decisively paved the way for a modern republic with help of Anti-British European powers. They clearly had naval prowess to crush the Portuguese who were a predominant power at the time themselves.
Regardless of the outcome, Britishers had already become a major player in Indian affairs so it would be foolish to assume that they wouldn't have leveraged their sway but this battle undoubtedly made their task easy. It was out of sheer stupidity and arrogance that Marathas lost this battle because they were supremely poised to win it. Those who don't learn from their past are bound to repeat it.

    Dear Kings and Generals,
While Indian names are understandably foreign and complex, please try to at least get the vowels right. It'd help immensely, even if you mispronounce the retroflex consonants. As an example the 'bad' in Hyderabad isn't pronounced like the English word, but with an open a as in Arctic. This 'open' a (or [aː] for IPA enthusiasts) also appears in marAthA, bAlAji and durrAni. The effort required is small (There are less than 20 vowels on the Hindi phonology wiki page), but the effect would be significant.

Here's some brilliant 300+IQ moves to make as a general for a medieval army.
    1) Underestimate your enemy
    2) Overestimate your forces
    3) Belittle the allies on whom you depend for money, supplies, intelligence and forces.
    4) Send the guy who has no experience in the region to fight there.
    5) Disrespect local traditions and heritage.
    6) Best of all, bring along thousands or rather hundreds of thousands of pilgrims with you.
The Third Battle of Panipat exposed the Maratha Confederacy. It was opportunism and pragmatism that won them their political prominence.
It was quick campaigns, through cavalry marches, under Bajirao that won them their military honours.
Yet, whenever an enemy faced them, with equal arms and strength, on the open field in a pitched battle, their performance was wanting.

And the Mughals up until the death of Aurangzeb were more or less up to par with Europe in terms of technology.
The move from Matchlock to Flintlock began around 1690-1700.
And Indian Matchlocks were heavier and longer than their European counterparts, which made them more accurate and stable.
Mughal cannons were on par with Europe, especially the light canons impressed many European observers.
As far as the Marathas, ruling the entire country? Are you forgetting that the Marathas fought amongst themselves more often than they fought against outsiders.
The Holkars, the Scindias and the Peshwas and the Bhonsles are bound to fight for supremacy and destroy themselves in the process.
With Ranjit Singh, Shuja-ud-Daulah and Hyder Ali and Siraj-ud-Daulah in the mix, the chances of the Maratha Empire expanding anywhere beyond what it was during the Third Battle of Panipat were slim.
Not to mention the Rajputs, who would rather die to the last man than bend their knee to the Scindias, as proven in the battles of Lalsot and Merta.
In conclusion, the Marathas would have never expanded beyond the limits of their Confederacy in 1760.
They were far too militarily conservative, they had powerful Sardars within the Confederacy whose personalities and actions have proven them incapable of working under centralised control.
And even if you take away the British, Awadh under Shuja-ud-Daulah, Rohillkhand, Benares under the Narayan Brahmin Dynasty, Siraj-ud-Daulah in Bengal, Ranjit Singh in Punjab and the Rajputs, were not going to simply allow the Marathas to march upto the Ganga and the Sindhu and rule over them.
