      ***** I couldn't decide where to post this, but thanks Jafro, and you too, Tom (though your jumper has a different name on it...) for your different but great contributions. Thanks to you guys and some others like Eric the car guy, I'm getting much more confident ripping into engines. I'm messing with a Honda H22A4 in a bone-stock 2000 Prelude base model, but the broad similarities between the two 4-cylinder engines have helped quite a lot. I literally used Plastigage for the first time in my life this week, and the tolerances were good!

    I'm in the process of doing my 1st 4g63 bottom end overhaul. And I've watched these videos at least 3 times. Just wanted to thank you for the detail and effort you went through to document all of this. It's made this a go to source of info for me and many others. That makes these videos timeless. As long as there's still a few DSM's on the road, people will have this resource. Thanks!

    Great video. Years back I had a 6 in line Ford engine. Did not have much money so I took everything apart, clean all and then install with new standard rings and new bearings. Took no measurements and ran for 100,000 more miles. I was lucky. You are doing it the correct way.

    I am new to this engine building simply because I never really took the time to read or search for information. I've been doing research on completely disassembling and assembling an engine for a month now with my service manual and the web. but coming across your page has motivated me even more to keep learning more. such an educated guy here not to mention Hilarious (26:20)..

    So I just wanted to say thank you so much on this series, and everything else related to this engine on your channel, it's really given me a clear idea on my build. I just bought a 1G Talon Tsi AWD for super cheap, and I'm about to pull the engine out for a rebuild. Seeing it all done like you have and seeing specs, part numbers, is probably going to save me days worth of time getting it back on the road. So again, thank you!

    +Robert Ballard your replies are disabled. Look closely at the set again. Only half the shells should be grooved on the mains. If you haven't cut the plastic open, it will appear as though all of them are grooved. The groove meets up with the other half of the bearing shell, and the groove extends to the oil holes, but it shouldn't go all the way around. If you've already cut the plastic and looked at all of them, and they are indeed grooved, then I would not use those bearings if the groove is full-circumference. Not on a 4g63 anyway.

    I'm just impressed that some checked the description. You'd be shocked how many people don't bother reading it or click the "Show more" text to see everything. 16 hours is crazy! haha. A 12 Core Mac Pro with Hyper Threading (24 virtual cores) would chew this footage up and spit it out. But that's 10 Grand for a maxed out model.

    I bought that same torque wrench when snap-on first started offering them and instantly regretted it. The following week I bought the flip dial mechanical ones and never had a problem again. Allegedly they came out with a version 2 that didn't go through batteries like a champ but I was too skeptical to try.

  • @JETZcorp
    @JETZcorp 10 років тому +9

    See all those wee holes in the piston oil ring grooves? Those are there to allow oil scraped by the rings to flow back down into the motor. Why point this out? Well, I happen to own a 1.9L Saturn, and like all 1.9 Saturns, it burns a ton of oil. That's because Saturn didn't bother to add those wee little oil ring drain holes in their pistons. Therefore, if you fail to use a good synthetic oil that can resist high heat AND change the oil often enough on a Saturn, the groove will fill with baked carbon crust, seizing the ring and preventing it from doing its job. But, if you treat your Saturn like a two stroke and top the oil off constantly, it'll happily go to 300,000mi. That's also why Craigslist is littered with Saturns that have engine issues; someone let the poor thing run down to 0qts. Prime candidates for Chumpcar or LeMons!
    Now you're a Saturn expert. Tell your friends.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 років тому +1

      +s0012823 It's the difference between knowing you can pound on it, and not knowing what it's going to do? Worst case scenario is you get an oil clearance wrong and munch the engine shortly after cranking it. This is all stuff you absolutely have to do. Now you know how. ;)

    Again, always a joy to watch, but if I could get your opinion about the rings for final assembly of the rotating assembly. An old colleague of mine who used to build motorcycle engines argued the fact of the piston ring gaps being put in line with the next ring below it and so forth. Our shop teacher said this would affect piston gas blow by into the crank case and so the correct method in his opinion was to stagger them so the would not line up stopping the gas blow by. My friend said that was wrong because the staggered rings would wear the bore unevenly, and had better results with lining up the gaps of the rings in final assembly. I am really on the fence with this so what is your idea on the subject. Lining up or staggering the rings. Again, a amazing video to watch.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  10 років тому +2

      The rings should be staggered. The way I did this is exactly by the recommendation in the service manual. The gaps are 180° out-of-phase, and all of them land on the 45°s because that's where they'll do the least damage to cylinder walls. If you line 'em up on the pins or the thrust surfaces, you'll cause a problem wear-wise. If you line them up, you'll increase the blow-by substantially. This car already has such loose rings that I would probably be lucky just to get it to fire on first startup if I did that. The real way to prevent wear is not to leave sharp edges on the rings when filing them. If you de-bur the edges and stack them the way the service manual has them arranged, you'll get the best compression numbers. Compression is key to making power.

    08:50 The Service Manual doesn't care in which order you loosen the main cap bolts, but I think it's odd you start at the center and spiral out. Starting on the outside and spiraling in (like head bolts on page 9-54 and 9-39) makes more sense to me.

    I've always found the shortblock assembly was the most stressfull. It can make or break your engine. So like you I get rediculously clean with my parts and get all OCD checking my work 2-3 times. Once my shortblock is built it's like a weight off my shoulders and the rest of the engine just bolt on stuff.

    Do ARP rod bolts, and ARP Main bolts benefit stock 6 bolt internals enough for the cost? I have all ARP bolts for my bottom end on my stock 6 Bolt internals (it came with the engine when I bought it). I'm seriously considering putting the engine back together with those parts; as opposed to waiting to save for an all forged rotating assembly. Aside from specs for torquing them down, and proper ARP assembly lube to install them. Is there anything I should look out for while assembling my 6 Bolt with those ARP components? I am going to prime the oil pump with Vaseline, and use Royal purple assembly lube for the rest of the assembly process. I took a page out of your book, and I am going to use Evo 8 rockers, mine are fine but I just want to put those in because they seem to be quite a bit more stout; and new lifters since mine have the microscopic oil holes on them and new E/I valves. I have different than stock exhaust valves, I'm having a hard time finding out who made them. Any advice on how to possibly identify them? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

    Newbie question. Why not use new rings if the bore hasn’t been honed/bored? I’m working on an older BMW 4cyl and upon disassembly the rings were completely stuck with carbon buildup. The bores and pistons are in spec and therefore I was thinking of using them with new rings.

I had a shop inspect and assemble block some years ago and now I am trying to finish up the build but was told I need to disassemble the block again to have it balanced with my lightweight competition flywheel and clutch set. Is this balancing necessary on this hybrid build in your opinion? thanks...

    Once again watching this video, and I'm trying to figure out what crankshaft refurbishing video you were referring to. Were you referring to the knife-edged crank video? Where did this crank you're using come from? I'm easily confused.

    You should be taking FOUR measurments per journal. Two measurements 180 degrees apart at "both ends" of each journal. That's how you determine out of round or "egg" as you call it and taper. Same goes for cylinder bores.

    This was awesome, the only thing that wasnt correct was spacing the ring gaps.
    They rotate around the piston in operation, so why orientate them?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 років тому +1

      +Colin Smith They don't move much. You orient them this way to achieve maximum compression while the rings set on first startup. You want just as much compression and vacuum as you can get. The way they're turned against eachother ensures that the path of least resistance is as long and complicated as possible.

    Could you take the measurements on the bearing journals with a digital caliper as opposed to Micrometers? If so, would it be adequate enough to trust it's readings? If you can't get your hands on the tools you used, would using a digital caliper be a viable option?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 років тому +1

      +BoostedCajun Nope, nope and nope. Digital calipers' results should always be treated as a guess. They actually have no place in precision machine work. They're a handy tool for anyone who can formulate the answer they need off of a rough estimate, but just can't be trusted on measurements like oil clearances or piston to cylinder wall clearances. In that regard, plastigauge actually works better. With engine assembly, it's calibrated micrometers and precision dial gauges-only, and all parts and tools must be room temperature.

      +Jafromobile good to know, I found a digital pair of micrometers and have read reviews of them and will deploy them once I have my rods, and new pistons ordered. Glad you go into such great detail on these videos. Below is a link to the micrometer set I will be buying for my up and coming build.

    Jafro, do you have to get the rings bang on specs or aim for around the spec? if not, how much off are you allowed to be off; 0.0005? more? One of my rings gives a little drag on the feeler gauge but another it slips right in but the next size up will not without moving the ring so I guess it is in the middle, is that ok or have I taken one too far? Thanks!

  • @paradisemace1
    @paradisemace1 9 років тому +1

    Caution! Beware of ring groove scrapers. The smallest deviation or even a dull blade will turn your piston into a paper weight.

    When inspecting main bearing clearances...other than the fact you mentioned it is covered in the FSM. Is there any reason you are using plastigauge rather than a bore gauge?
    I figured I would use a bore gauge on mine and do the math to figure out clearances like you covered in your Blueprint 100 series.
    Thanks Jafro.

    I been working on cars since a teen and just now getting into building engines. I need a caliper capable of one ten-thousandths (I think the machine shop term is tenth?) But all I seen have the readout to do those measurements but accuracy is still only +/- one thou. I can't read/too lazy to read mics, unless they make those in digital , or I'm I stuck with mics as my only tool to measure bearing sizes eta?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  8 років тому +1

      Calipers aren't accurate enough in the 10 thousandths to trust for measuring oil clearances. They make 'em that fine, and you can probably find a few different kinds at MSC tools online, but look at what they cost. Compare them to the cost of the mics in the size ranges you need. Once you're done with that, consider their accuracy and which one's a better deal. To get one that measures ten thousandths, look for one that's graduated in .00005 increments.
