Yes! Hope you have taken the time to watch this amazing essay by now. Rowan absolutely nails all of the obvious GoT failings, using the master storytelling of Black Sails as a stark comparison. It probably should be taught as a Screenwriter 101 course.

You might already know about it, but the Fathoms Deep podcast is really great and would be a fun companion to a nice, leisurely rewatch. Really smart hosts, insightful analysis of each ep, and lots of interviews with creators and cast. I'm with you about them doing Treasure Island with flashbacks to fill in the time jump!

Every repeat viewing something new hits me. I always call the ending a quiet tragedy. It feels good in the moment but the longer it sits with you the more the tragedy sinks in. History is not on the side of Jack/Anne/Mary, or even Max as her power will be short lived once Rogers returns. "Treasure Island" awaits for the others. I absolutely love how the show puts a new spin on Silver in the book and his motivations. Yeah, he wants that treasure but a part of him also wants back what he once had and gave up, as Flint warns he will someday. A bit of fun. I've mentioned before that Luke Arnold is also a published author and the cast came together to help him promote his books. I know we all have our head canons but mine will always be that Madi dumped Silver. 🤣🤣🤣 She drop kicked his ass off the side of that cliff five second after the camera panned away because he was unworthy of her. I do like to think that she went out on her own with those loyal to her and continued to help and save those she could. My theory is that it's Max, not Madi, who is his "Treasure Island" wife and their marriage is much more of a business arrangement than a love match. They both needed the other once Madi dumped him and Rogers returned and they had to skip Nassau. And doesn't managing a tavern sound more like a Max thing? Silver is just the white male figurehead needed to own a place back then. I also like to pretend that Featherstone and Idelle headed off to England, changed their names to Hawkins, opened up an inn and had a son named Jim. 😁😁

im glad you enjoyed the series and i agree on both fronts, i wish there was more, and i also wish there was a continuation to treasure island. if we never get one then ill probably make do with the 2012 mini series as it has quite a few big names and Eddie Izzard as silver looks a lot like flint by the end of black sails, making it look like silver has gradually became even more like flint. but if you're interested blind wave reacted to the entire series a few years ago, and after they released an episode talking about treasure island because most hadn't read it till they watch black sails, but in the last 20 minutes there is a video of Luke Arnold answering questions about the show, because apparently he does enjoy watching people reacting to the show in his spare time. just in case you wanted to hear a little extra information from a cast member that you may not hear on a TV interview.
Black Sails and Justified are the only series I have watched that the final episode left me with a huge smile on my face and true contentment in the end of the story. So many shows bungle their endings and just ruin the time you spent putting in to it. I've actually come back to Outlander for the penultimate and final seasons (now that they aren't dragging their feet with the story) one can hope they stick the landing with it's final episode as well. I'm also hoping Justified: City Primeval is as good as the Elmore Leonard book.
@@alexachipman Diana Gabaldon still won't have the last book done in time, so she's given the showrunners permission to pull a Game Of Thrones, and make the final season an alt-universe. I don't envy those poor writers.

Team Flint! Silvers mistake will haunt him for the rest of his life this is such a beautiful show, it will never be surpassed. and honestly, i dont think this is flints happy ending. i think this is Johns story, the story he tells himself and others to make lighter his betrayal. He never saw flints supposed reunion with thomas, he couldn't have. If flint is in that place, then he is a prisoner of the empire he dedicated his being to destroying, paralyzed by his loss. Realistically. and i think that fits more to me with the theme of the show, and what flint said to silver on skeleton island. Their stories will be distorted and twisted, the truth of their struggle forgotten.

I can't even begin to describe how much the story means to me as a queer person, they literally unburied their gays. I agree with you that Black Sails had a vision from the very beginning that was executed brilliantly. Everyone involved was just so good; actors, writers, directors, the composer, camera people, everyone made this one of the best shows I have ever seen. It needs so much more love.

In my view, Silver is the true villain of the story, who betrayed Madi, sabotaged and sold away the revolution that could have truly changed the world. Flint was right about everything, and Madi agreed with him. Silver had no right to steal that in the name of protecting her.

I am not worried about Outlander - there are more books to read after, so even if the tv ending is meh, it won’t matter.
