"The Plane? It's bigger than this one city" You know you *say* that...but so did Kaladesh. And Amonkhet. And Arcavios. And Fiora. And Mercadia. At least Ravnica is honest about all of the interesting stuff happening in cities. XD
There is a Chandra origin story that takes place on Kaladesh in the countryside and in small villages. In the Arcavios stories, some students have to go out into the swamp to do tasks. Liliana goes out into the wilderness to visit a dragon. Lucca goes to a small village full of rednecks that hate magic users. Liliana gets banished by a spell during a battle and lands so far out in the wilderness that it takes days to walk back to the college. One of the Mercadia stories takes place in a small village of druid sort of people opposed to the cityfolk.
To be fair in both this case and Amonkhet, they established why the hell no one cares about what goes on outside the city, save the very scary shit that wants kill you, there’s not much out there.
I love reading the official story on the MTG website, but there's something about the way you tell them that makes it so much more enjoyable than just reading them myself. Keep up the great work!
I love it! I’m glad that they didn’t go the lazy route like they did with Theros beyond death. Elspeth in my opinion is an Awesome Character, and a perfect replacement for Gideon on the Gate Watch. Now this whole impending confrontation between her and Norn just gives me shivers of excitement! I can’t wait to see what happens next! And her new sword I cannot wait to see what that’s going to be like as an Artifact Equipment! P.S they should’ve done actual dialogue of when Elspeth confronts Urabrask. Because unless she recognized him as the praetor who dislikes Norn, I imagine that she would have needed some talking to before being onboard with the whole alliance with him.

Great lore vid as always, love the idea of putting a night errant in a noir detective story. I hope the next big planespanning adventure could revolve around planswalkers finding a way to explore the blind eternities.
I AM OVER HYPED!!! FINALLY, Elspeth’s Home is revealed! I cannot wait to see the Cards in this Set!! My Favorite character is being givin her follow up story. I hope she shoves her Bright blade up Norns non-existent metallic/Plasma Donkey!
I honestly expected Gaida to be a planeswalker, either already sparked due to the experimentations with her powers or igniting during the battle with ObNixilis.
I think eventually when the battle for new phyrexia happens, tezzeret will reveal himself to be the triple agent... deliberately infiltrating the Praetor's and the guild pack to unknowingly free his true master as a sleeper agent, nicol Bolas amist all the complaetion and chaos. With the planar Bridge merged with tezzeret I believe he'll ultimately be the gateway to nicol Bolas's return
The story closed quite a few gaps. But as you said, more open ends were made. But overall, I'm personally happy with the story. Just thought Elspeth would end up being an angel.

I often hear the comment that the story could have been better, if it was split into more parts, across multiple sets and I agree. One set is sadly often not enough and I would have loved to learn more about the Families and their bosses. What I feel would have been an interesting way to tell the story would have been a reverse Khans and Fate Reforged approach. Split the story into two but start with the ancient conflict. Show us the battle against the phyrexians, the struggle that lead to the team up of Angels and Demons and the eventual betrayl by the demons. Make two Versions of each Boss, as I think all of them were alive during the ancinet conflict and show us how the families changed.
Some thoughts about this set... It seems that Urabrask shall lead a rebellion in New Phyrexia, mostly supported by Tezzy. He'll be the key to stop Elesh Norn. I do have the feeling that Giada's sacrifice is a foreshadowing of what to expect with Elspeth. Maybe she's also a daughter of angels, and thus her death, her blood, would purify the glistening oil wherever it expanded.
It was slightly better than I thought. Could have been more refined, for sure, but for once they're gearing the general lore in an interesting direction.
New Capenna would be an unorthodox place for Vivien to place roots, but with the angels freed that now becomes a possibility and the planet could really use an influx of green.
It was like a JJ Abrams story that answers questions by raising two more questions in its place until there isn’t enough time to answer all the questions so they just abandon them altogether.
There's a HUGE problem with Elspeth's childhood story: Phyrexians didn't exist when she was young!!! All phyrexians throughout the multiverse shutdown when Yawgmoth died. The only exception was Xantcha's heart inside Karn, which centuries later infected Mirrodin and gave birth to New Phyrexia. Elspeth was born long after Yawgmoth's death, but decades before New Phyrexia. So... Why does she claim Phyrexians destroyed her home world? Is she much older than she appears? She'd have to be 1000 years old... Or is she lying? Or crazy? Or is she a victim of a bad author? It's a mysteriously mysterious mystery! *Spooky Twilight Zone music*

The corruption of a plane only needs the Glistening Oil, there's no need of Yawgmoth. That's how we got new Phyrexia in Mirrodin. So the same can be true with the origin plane of Elspeth.

When he died, they all fell lifeless throughout the multiverse, the old oil became inert. Karn was built with the Phyrexian heart of Xantcha, and its Phyrexian programming contaminated Argentum's core at its creation, turning it into Mirrodin then into New Phyrexia. That's how the Glistening Oil was made, with the corrupted creation of a plane. New Phyrexia was supposed to be the return of Phyrexians after Yawgmoth's death, so I'm a bit pissed with Elspeth loll. I'm kinda mad they barely introduce these mob bosses and then immediately kill them off. It's so unsatisfying, and if we had gotten to know them better it could have been a better story.

I enjoyed the easter egg of edward hoppers iconic painting "nighthawks" which also was used as part of the album cover... "open all nite" also by.. you guessed it.. the nighthawks😎 Are you a fan of the 1942 painting or the band? I met mark wenner and the guys awhile ago after a show locally and had him test out a custom harmonica a friend made and he loved it.. thanks for the great video as a whole.. i dont get to play much anymore because of my work doing food delivery fulltime but when ive got a 45 min commute home at night.. man this is perfect to listen to😎😁
Anyone else get the feeling that Giada's family is actually the Brokers? I did not see any mention of the Brokers in this video, yet they are the faction most heavily associated with angels (in Streets of New Capenna). Soul of Emancipation destroys up to three target nonland permanents and its controller creates a 3/3 angel for each one destroyed this way. It reminds me of the part of the story when Giada busted the statues freeing the angels. Almost like she was freeing some of the Brokers. I think the Brokers minimal lore involved them being lawyers that were a little bit forceful, so essentially like vigilantes to some degree? And Elspeth who was the main protagonist of this story: her new card's -3 ability has to do with shield counters: the trademark ability of the Brokers and her ultimate creates an assload of angels. Coincidence? I think not! I always liked the Brokers because I like fliers and shield counters which is pretty much what the faction is most heavily centered around, so I do hope that there is more lore for them than just being aggressive lawyers with a bird that throws turncoats off of buildings. Albeit it would probably be like Patchy the Pirate making them walk the plank if one of the turncoats was a flier, I don't really imagine any of the angels would turn against the Brokers though assuming that Giada's family actually are the Brokers.
Tbh I kinda just want a simple low stakes story for a change without established characters and without planeswalkers Just a planes enhabitants dealing with the troubles of their own plane
Xander's card does not reflect his character in the story at all. In the story, he's more reclusive and secretive, while his card is aggressive and power driven. Just feels like there is a lot of information that is either not shared or relayed between writers and production. I know that first and foremost it's a card game, but still feels like a very lazy design for the character who could have been more interesting in both aspects.
This set confuses me. Why are the angels all gone in the story, but there are tons of them on the cards? Why was Elspeth so irresponsible that she had no weapon? Wasn't the Shadow Spear a great weapon? Couldn't she have bought a weapon or looted one from bad guys she beat up? If she had to, she could have planeswalked to Bant or Theros or someplace to pick up a weapon.
@@AetherHub Elspeth… literally just escaped death and the underworld… to become a Grubhub driver for Halo. Seemed to get over Daxos pretty quickly and then dipped out on Ajani too. This writer didn’t do her justice…. If only there were TONS of source material for her.
@@MTG_Ronin By the same token, at this point she's so far removed from the ordinary experience of even planeswalkers... I doubt she would care about cleaning toilets if she thought it would advance whatever crusade she happens to be in. And diving headfirst into work and obsessing with her world is hardly "getting over Daxos". There's still plenty of room to develop her, even if we shouldn't get our hopes so high. By now Magic is a game we're teaching our kids. It's getting to a point in which characters have been around for so long and gone through so much that they would need to be written by people with extensive adult life experience to have their inner complexities explored rather than just speculated about. Wizards has to choose between telling a story to us (more expensive, lower return on investment) or to another demographic (cheaper, higher return on investment), and they're clearly choosing teenagers and young adults here.
Anyone else bugged by the fact that they take Elspeth, an awesome knight who cleaved her way through Mirrodin with a longsword, and then were like "ah, but big sword too heavy unwieldy and big. Let me give her (what appears to be) a magical girl rapier." Feels untrue to the character, a bit sexist, and ultimately stupid.
One complaint I have with the story, no Ob Nixilis perspective focused chapter. Something to fill in his side of this story and why target a specific mob faction for control.
He talked a bunch of times about his speech troubles, he struggles with certain pronunciations / sounds. He's a lot better now than he was years ago. He used to add subtitles so people would understand him. Though the Mephisto mistake is an unforgivable sin. ;) Loll

I'm all for trying to make a new plane unique and it's good to see the original shards as the wedges have had more than enough sets for now, but between the story and setting it all feels... off. Like this feels less like a plane from MTG and more like fanfic for an MTG plane. It feels like someone took Alara and threw out the idea "Hey! What if the shards... were run by mobsters?" Why not gangs of thieves, or different fleets of ships that all had different roles with their crews? I know that MTG is kinda having a problem with going back to already visited planes (Return to Return to Return to...) and it's getting harder to establish new and interesting ideas that have not been done yet, but this one just feels like it was outta left field for me. Thank you sir for the reading. Made that last hour of work go by super quick!

I'm kinda mad they barely introduce these mob bosses and then immediately kill them off. It's so unsatisfying, and if we had gotten to know them better it could have been a better story.

Anyone else get the feeling that Giada's family is actually the Brokers? I did not see any mention of the Brokers in this video, yet they are the faction most heavily associated with angels (in Streets of New Capenna). Soul of Emancipation destroys up to three target nonland permanents and its controller creates a 3/3 angel for each one destroyed this way. It reminds me of the part of the story when Giada busted the statues freeing the angels. Almost like she was freeing some of the Brokers. I think the Brokers minimal lore involved them being lawyers that were a little bit forceful, so essentially like vigilantes to some degree? And Elspeth who was the main protagonist of this story: her new card's -3 ability has to do with shield counters: the trademark ability of the Brokers and her ultimate creates an assload of angels. Coincidence? I think not! I always liked the Brokers because I like fliers and shield counters which is pretty much what the faction is most heavily centered around, so I do hope that there is more lore for them than just being aggressive lawyers with a bird that throws turncoats off of buildings. Albeit it would probably be like Patchy the Pirate making them walk the plank if one of the turncoats was a flier, I don't really imagine any of the angels would turn against the Brokers though assuming that Giada's family actually are the Brokers.

Xander's card does not reflect his character in the story at all. In the story, he's more reclusive and secretive, while his card is aggressive and power driven. Just feels like there is a lot of information that is either not shared or relayed between writers and production. I know that first and foremost it's a card game, but still feels like a very lazy design for the character who could have been more interesting in both aspects.
I dunno, I would have thought hand discard, mill and sacrifice as mechanics that seem more manipulative and mind trickery rather than brute force.
Imagine when Phyrexians invade Capenna unites and fights using biplanes and zeppelins in the city spires

This set confuses me.
Why are the angels all gone in the story, but there are tons of them on the cards?
Why was Elspeth so irresponsible that she had no weapon? Wasn't the Shadow Spear a great weapon? Couldn't she have bought a weapon or looted one from bad guys she beat up? If she had to, she could have planeswalked to Bant or Theros or someplace to pick up a weapon.

@@AetherHub Elspeth… literally just escaped death and the underworld… to become a Grubhub driver for Halo. Seemed to get over Daxos pretty quickly and then dipped out on Ajani too. This writer didn’t do her justice…. If only there were TONS of source material for her.
@@MTG_Ronin By the same token, at this point she's so far removed from the ordinary experience of even planeswalkers... I doubt she would care about cleaning toilets if she thought it would advance whatever crusade she happens to be in. And diving headfirst into work and obsessing with her world is hardly "getting over Daxos". There's still plenty of room to develop her, even if we shouldn't get our hopes so high.
By now Magic is a game we're teaching our kids. It's getting to a point in which characters have been around for so long and gone through so much that they would need to be written by people with extensive adult life experience to have their inner complexities explored rather than just speculated about. Wizards has to choose between telling a story to us (more expensive, lower return on investment) or to another demographic (cheaper, higher return on investment), and they're clearly choosing teenagers and young adults here.

This is really intriguing! I find this story far better than Kamigawa, with the characters acting way more "in character".
Anyone else bugged by the fact that they take Elspeth, an awesome knight who cleaved her way through Mirrodin with a longsword, and then were like "ah, but big sword too heavy unwieldy and big. Let me give her (what appears to be) a magical girl rapier." Feels untrue to the character, a bit sexist, and ultimately stupid.
Yeah I can see that argument. Since the fall of Mirrodin she’s never been the same. Always doubting herself. She’s just not the character she was

One complaint I have with the story, no Ob Nixilis perspective focused chapter. Something to fill in his side of this story and why target a specific mob faction for control.

Nice coverage but the way you tortured Giada's name hurt so bad. One of the most beautiful names, too. It's "Jaa-dah", like with Giada De Laurentiis.

He talked a bunch of times about his speech troubles, he struggles with certain pronunciations / sounds. He's a lot better now than he was years ago. He used to add subtitles so people would understand him.
Though the Mephisto mistake is an unforgivable sin. ;)

I'm all for trying to make a new plane unique and it's good to see the original shards as the wedges have had more than enough sets for now, but between the story and setting it all feels... off. Like this feels less like a plane from MTG and more like fanfic for an MTG plane. It feels like someone took Alara and threw out the idea "Hey! What if the shards... were run by mobsters?" Why not gangs of thieves, or different fleets of ships that all had different roles with their crews? I know that MTG is kinda having a problem with going back to already visited planes (Return to Return to Return to...) and it's getting harder to establish new and interesting ideas that have not been done yet, but this one just feels like it was outta left field for me.
