Caress of Steel is such a monster of an album. I've never understood why it is looked down upon so much, other than that it wasn't a financial success. The album totally jams.

I’ve always loved this album. Just like you, I never understood why it was looked down upon so much as well. The reason why I think it didn’t sell that much and is looked down on is that going from Fly By Night to this, it was kind of a big surprise and I think many people didn’t get it. But, us Rush fans love it.

Me either man! I found Rush in high school (Permanent Waves was my initial breakthrough; I’d listen to the whole album just about every day for a long time), and before long I was deep into their 70s and early 80s catalog (still by far my favorite era). For whatever reason, I was really big on a few of those albums and just kinda forgot about others until later.
After I got to see them live for the first and only time on the R40 tour, my Rush world kept expanding. I remember Xanadu totally blowing my mind live, and I soon started listening to A Farewell to Kings in its entirety often, and started really getting into Fly By Night as well (By-Tor is another incredibly underrated Rush tune!). By this time, I knew every early album in its entirety except for Caress of Steel. I was a huge fan of the Beyond the Lighted Stage doc, and for whatever reason, that doc just made it seem to me like Caress of Steel wasn’t worth listening to, and despite LOVING every bit of the 70s prog era Rush, I just kinda ignored that album for years (aside from a few songs like Bastille Day).
It wasn’t until about a year ago that I really dug in CoS (I’m almost 25, so it’s been about 9 years since I started listening to Rush), and finally catching Fountains of Lamneth felt like discovering a brand new Rush prog epic for me (I guess it felt that way to me because that’s exactly what it was to me, lol) and it is one of my absolute favorites now.
All that to say that it took me far too long to give this album a chance despite loving literally every single song from 1975-1982 and Hemispheres being my absolute favorite album. Needless to say, I’ve listened to the other prog epics hundreds of times and know every single beat of every single section of all of those songs, but because FoL is still relatively new to me, it is still mysterious and magical every time I listen to it, and I LOVE that feeling. Like I said, it’s like suddenly discovering another epic prog Rush song from my favorite era even though I’m DEEP into all of their other songs from the era. Not sure why it took me so long to even give it a chance, but now that I have it has certainly become one of my favorite Rush songs and albums. I guess it really was just that doc that kinda led me to push it aside in my mind, but now discovering it years later is incredible to me. An absolutely fantastic classic 70s prog Rush song and album that certainly doesn’t get enough praise even within the Rush community.

I was curious how you keep in time with the older stuff since they didn't record with a click and do a lot of subtle pushing and pulling w tempos? That would be really hard to come in on time with all the cues like you do! Also curious why your rack toms seem tuned down pretty low, the heads almost seem loose. Is that intentional? Keep killing it man!!
