And, we've landed in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) in Vietnam! First video will be a night life vlog where explore a bunch of things to do in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) during the night.
We went to Apartment 42 Nguyen Hue, Saigon's incredible cafe apartment. This apartment block was built in the mid 1960s and was once accommodation for American military officers and high ranking officials working for the South Vietnam government. As the city redeveloped, tenants began renting out their apartments - it was illegal but people did it regardless, hence why tehre are so many shops in the apartment building.
Then for dinner, we had broken rice (com tam) a very popular comfort food in Vietnam. Broken rice is fragments of rice grains, broken in the field, during drying, during transport, or by milling. Broken rice is fragmented, not defective, however, they used to be seen as food for people who couldn't afford much. We went to Com Tam Cali (a chain store) and got a lemon grass pork com tam & a banana coconut cream. the rice was awesome and as for the dessert, i'll let you find out.
And last but not least, i want to talk about crossing the roads in Vietnam. As i am typing this, i am still in awe of how the locals do it with such ease. there are no lights, there are so many cars and they dont really stop. watch how i managed to cross a road.....
hope you enjoyed this vlog!

I love visiting Vietnam and have been there 4 times in last 5 years. My tip for crossing the roads is when you get to the intersection wait for the lights to change and when you have the lights you step out and just start crossing at a calm even pace. Do not be panicked by the traffic so long as you walk at calm even pace the traffic including the millions of scooters will slow down and let you cross, but remember keep walking at a calm even pace do not stop, run or try to step back as this will confuse those driving the motor vehicles and scooters, which is more likely to cause an accident. Ultimately when stepping out to cross the road in Vietnam it is a leap of faith and you have to ignore the traffic chaos around you and trust they won't hit you.
Omg yay broken rice plates!!! Lemongrass pork 😍😍😍
it's soooo hearty and delish!
We always admire the chaos/harmony of the traffic in HCMC and Hanoi... You so it chaotic but if you stop and watch, everybody follows their path, like cells in a bloodstream, or ants in their..."antstream?"
No crashes, no bumps...lots of honks, true!
Too true,It’s like organised chaos! It’s only chaotic and overwhelming if you’re not “with it” but like you said if you watch closely, everything works fine
It’s so busy definitely super intimidating
yeah.... it was... i've never crossed roads like that before
Ive walk pass the streets here 100 of times.. The secret is to WALK slow in a consistent pace.. Eyes straight to oncoming traffic.... DO NOT RUN!! The bikes and cars knows how to go in front or behjnd you.. If you run.. Its gonna be a accident... If i was there i will teach you.. The man was nice to help out!!
oh man Vic i needed you there!!!! yeah ive learned to not run just slowly wade through the traffic. still not used to it though...
Hey Janice!! Congrats on 2K subs!! That's a sweet accomplishment. Such a lively city at night. Love the chocolate box description.
hehe thank you so much guys!!! :)
I am from small town boy; but when I came back to Vietnam 2 years ago. It was the first time, I stayed in Saigon by myself. I did not dare to cross the street because seeing many cars ran non stop. It is normal for the local but I had to wait for somebody crossing and then accompany them crossing. Though I was so scared and terrified. In America, we almost have traffic lights every street but not in Vietnam. I hope Vietnam will install more in the future.
I love that your facial expressions don't lie when you are tasting things
Loved your vlog. It brought back great memories of my trips to Vietnam.
I will definitely go back again. It's a great place to visit and enjoy.
Wow that dessert too!! I don’t like bananas but that looks good
yeah that coconut cream was delish!
Janice i’m falling for youuu ❤️
wow! that was so nice from him to help you cross that crazy street!
yeah! couldnt have done it without him!
I experienced this at a zebra crossing in Shanghai too. In the end, I dropped the idea of visiting a particular mall as I did not know how to cross.
Hahaha yes that was pretty much my thinking if I didn’t have help crossing the road.. was just gonna go someone else instead 😅
The food looks delicious! I actually haven’t tried a lot of vietnamese food other than pho because every time I go to a vietnamese restaurant I think about ordering different dishes but always end up getting pho haha
pho is such a go to for me too! it's my type of comfort food !
We would stay there and observe! LOL That is crazzzyyyy~! So great you found that guy. Really enjoyed this video.
bahaha i know right! i was too scared to take the first step! :P
I love Vietnamese food! Also, crossing roads in Vietnam! That’s so freaking awesome! I wanna try that too one day 😂 #lifegoals 🙌
Bahahhaha it does give you a huge rush of adrenaline crossing those roads!
There's an art to crossing the streets in Vietnam. Like the man did, put out your hand and have eye contact and start walking at a steady pace. Do not wait for the traffic to come to a complete stop like in Sydney because it never will. When you do cross don't stop, don't run and most important do not hesitate. The traffic will automatically go behind you so keep moving forward at a steady and consistent pace. It gets easier with every crossing. Hope that helps.
Definitely an art im still trying to master. I did notice that the cars/ motorbikes go slower than ones in Sydney... like a constant flow so yea, I’ve learned to just go and walk at a steady pace
Ohhh lemongrass pork! We love lemongrass so much and that spread with the broken rice and fried egg is an awesome combo!
It was the first time I’d had broken rice with it and you’re totally right - amazing combo! 😋
At the intersection, your friend is right! They are allowed to turn right so turning right is green all the time! Unlucky you reached there at the worst possible time when people are coming home and vehicles are crowding up. But just start crossing one by one foot and they'll dodge and make way for you
yeah! that's what we've learned throughout the trip is just to start walking at a steady pace and trust that the motorcycles will dodge us!
Which camera and lens did you use for this vid??love the colors...
Wow who knew it’d be so difficult to cross the street??
i know right! it actually deterred me from going to places because i didnt want to cross XD
The banana dessert' is looking delicous as heck! Vietnam is known for their desserts! Good choice
hehe yeah it was delicious :D
Banana dessert sounds very interesting.
Omg that crazy how busy is there. Can’t believe there is no lights. That’s so good you find kind man who help you guys. Btw hopefully you feeling better
Yes feelin a lot better now thank you 🙏
If it weren’t for that man I duno how long I would’ve stood there for 🤣
Vietnam is so great but those scooters there are next level! That orange and pepper tea looks nice! Ha ha that road crossing like playing frogger. What an adrenaline rush. Great 1st adventure in Vietnam.
They really are! I see people with two passengers - one at the back and a kid at the front. 😳
Lovely tea shops. It sucks that they didn't have your favorite tea. Super cool time lapse of the people walking outside. We also eat broken rice back home in Puerto Rico. It used to be the poor man's rice, but it's so good.
it is so delicious! first time i've had it but definitely something i'd have again!
LOL the fear in your eyes from crossing the road XD, glad you didn't die or get hurt, but that was funny.
hahaha well im glad you got some entertainemtnt out of it. the fear was REAL i tell ya
It happened to me as well while i was in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh city several years ago. So many motorcycle on the road. Btw, Seems you enjoyed your Vietnam trip, Janice.
yes im really enjoying it so far! :D
lmao this is the best. After you do it a couple times, it's not too bad haha
I mean.... maybe a bit more then a couple times 🤣
Glad you made it alive in the end! So, where are you heading next?
Hehe not sure yet... still deciding 🤗
I encountered that too in HCMC. I almost wanted to take a taxi across. But my husband & I decided to take the courage and cross bit by bit.
Good on you! It took a while for me to get used to
have you ever crossed a road in vietnam before? tips please!
The best way to cross a road in Vietnam is be brave and just keep walking and looking out for the vehicles at the same time . You won’t get hit , trust me !
I’ve crossed it numerous time on my trip to HCM. The trick I guess is to just walk at a constant pace and the motorbikes would slow down for you or go around you. Never speed up when walking on the road. No sudden movements.
@@longttang yeah , i just need to be more brave...and walk at a steady pace!
Consistent, predictable pace and somehow the traffic really does magically avoid you! 🙂🙌
@@thewfoo yeah that's such a good tip! walking at a constant pace so that all the other cars can anticipate your movements
i love Pho, it is so delicious. one of the best food
Have you noticed that a lot of poor people's food from the past, become like amazing local food ? The same thing happened with paella. it started as poor ppl just having rice and pouring whatever was available, like rabbit and veggies... it is fascinating!
Great desert!
hey i had no idea that's how paella came to be! it's actually really interesting learning origins of different dishes
You got special experience, so excited.....555
yay!
Hi ! Janice can you please show me where is this cafe place address ?thanks
Are you still in Vietnam? We're here too 😁✌️I imagine that pineapple biscuit tastes similar to the Malaysian one as well, just a different shape 🙂 crossing the busy roads in Vietnam is definitely quite intimidating. That's so cool the nice dude helped you! We learnt the controlled pace thing and the arm thing too lol.. Peter actually holds my hand to cross these roads 😅 - Yen
no, i wish i were! missing the heat so much :( how long are you guys staying there for?
i never got used to crossing the roads my entire time there...
hahaa i totally feel ya ! i wanted to hold that guys hand too xD i guess it just takes more practice....
@@JaniceFung ah too bad, would be cool to meet up otherwise. We're in Vietnam for about a month ☺️ Currently in Hoi An. Yea these roads are intimidating for sure!
@@PeterandYen one month? Nice!! enjoy Hoi An!
Aaah crossing in Vietnamese cities streets...haha that's an adventure itself!! 😂
100%! That in itself was an adventure hahaha
Hahaha looks like an experience of a lifetime for you!
In Indonesia, it’s a similar situation lol
We don’t have a luxury of pedestrian lights like in Australia. So we pretty much need to do the same as that guy did for you 😆
Just use your hand as a sign you want to cross, and be brave and brace yourself to cross it 😅😅
hahaha yes it was definitely quite an experience :P
i definitely have a new found appreciation for pedestrian lights and the crossing here in Aus!
"be brave and brace yourself" is pretty much the way to go hahahha
Try Bun Bo Hue a really popular soup
thank you, noted!!
wow, you really have a good stamina, going from SG to Vietnam and alone, Super girl
I was with friends in Vietnam ☺️
Com tam! Broken rice its pooilar with their porkchops! So amaiNg com tam cali looks amazing!!
yeah! its a chain restaurant but still really good :D
Oh yeah that first time crossing the street in Vietnam was an experience!
Yeah, it was kinda intimidating and quite an experience...!
Omg janice you are in my hood! My family was born here in ho chi minh
no way!! have you been back recently? i loved the place!!
wow that building is full of history....
sounds like the orange tea will help you with your throat...but it also sounds like you are going back to try the one you really, really want
Frog? like a real frog?
the tea did help a bit but it probs isnt something i'd drink again tbh. its like orange juice without the sweetness i guess? haha
yes! frog - like a real frog....!
Janice Fung oh my !! Never had frog before
What camera gear are you using, Janice?
Canon 80d ☺️
One of my tip is to walk in a steady pace and put out your hand and look in the direction of the vehicles coming like the man did and the vehicles will slow down and let you pass. Just remember not to panick and run across the street, then you'll never gonna make it 😂 and most of the time at intersections, when the red lights are on, vehicles can turn right, they dont have to stop and wait
Yea that’s pretty much what we did the whole time ! 🤣
Somewhat used to it now after several trips to Saigon but sure could have used that guy the first few times.
Yeah I probably need a few more trips before I’m completely good with it, haha
The duck egggggg loooks scary
Lol it tasted better than it seems!
I love how you described it.. a chocolate box ^^ N
Hehe yeah! Like an assorted box of chocs- never know what you’re gonna get !
Does those bikes stop for you when crossing roads or jus whizz between our legs? There's so many bikes than people on the road there 🙄
They whizz between us 🤣 but also, they don’t go fast and move at a steady pace...so I THINK as long as we all don’t suddenly change our pace... we are able to avoid each other
I have a tip. When crossing the road in. Vietnam it is to see when it is clear is to cross immediately.
It's called the Vietnam shuffle!
BAHAHA too true !
Good Morning from Las Vegas......Its 8:05 and my first class left....We learned about how beer saved the world...LOL Grains and ancient Egypt, etc........Gotta watch later....munchkins coming in for 2nd period.........
how did beer save the world?!
@@JaniceFung sent you a link to the video in Patreon....
@@BackDownSouth haha thanks Rob
here is a tip step off watch the Bikes DO NOT STOP the bikes will go around you. I lost a very good friend in Vung Tau when he stopped, was knocked over and his head hit the Gutter, They had to take him off life support It was his first trip back after 50 years
thank you for the tip Jack, I am sorry to hear about what happened to your friend.
The first time we went to Vietnam and had to cross the streets in Hanoi I actually had a panic attack and went straight back to the hotel room took my husband many many hours of trying to convince me that it would be okay to try a game and that whole trip all I did was hold onto a shoulder close my eyes and he just walked and because I was holding his shoulder I just went with him now I'm a seasoned traveller to Vietnam and I just go
oh no! im so sorry that happened - i have to agree it is very daunting and intimidating especially for a first timer. i still havent been able to 'just go' yet... but im slowly getting there!
Either you cross the road midnight, or wait for any kinded heart local lead you. haha.....
HAHA yeah pretty much!
haha I'm a Viet living in Sydney atm and I have to say crossing a road in Saigon like that is not that scary because the speed of motorbikes and cars as you can see in the video is slow, very!
What I found when I moved from Saigon to Sydney is that I see a lot of Aussies cross the road (aka jay walking haha) without any fear omg for me I personally think that is more dangerous here in Sydney as cars are at a lot higher speed. Anyway the underlying rule (in Saigon) is that you have to cross the road at the street lights otherwise moto vehicle wont stop (they will slow down only). It is quite different than Sydney where all moto vehicle stop when there are pedestrians walk.
btw I love your channel Im a new subscriber! hope you share more stories abt you quitting the job at a bank and decided to travel.
Thank you so much! ☺️🙏
Are there any specific stories you’d like to see/ hear about quitting corporate and travelling ?
Im curious abt how you are able to afford travelling without a stable daytime job as I know that even though youtubers at first stages do not really earn much of money. And living cost in Sydney is too expensive already. I really like your video of living on $1 a day in Sydney, hope you will share tips about how you save money after quitting the corporate job 😀
@@tracyngo6727 thanks for the vid ideas! i'll see how i can incorporate them in my upcoming videos :)
Crossing the street in Vietnam cities is like real-life Frogger 🤣
HAHA so true 🤣🤣
My tip was don’t hesitate when crossing. But don’t take on the cars or trucks
🙏🙏
I hear blindfold helps 🤣🤣🤣
Hahahaha yeah.. and some noise cancelling headphones
the traffic is nightmare, i don't know is it worse in Vietnam or India or maybe Indonesia lol
I’ve been to Bali and it wasn’t like Vietnam at all 😳
Janice Fung nope. Bali is ok. Traffic jam maybe only in kuta area. Try to go to Jakarta
just wait until you see no cars or coach's coming then just cross the road slowly. don't look at the bikes coming to wards you look straight ahead and dobt change your pace. the bikes will avoid you. as soon as you make eye contact and hesitate thats where you get problems as the rider won't know which side of you to pass.
yeah it really is a skill isnt it
👍🏻
🙏😊
Aku Suka makan makan
That is not authentic texture of Cơm Tấm (Vietnamese broken rice dish) to test the authentic one you can go to "Cơm Tấm Ba Ghiền" you will see the texture of the broken rice is completely different and also it tastes much much better than that restaurant. For crossing the road, the tourist can use the technique called "local human shield" (tagging along the local to cross the street)
Banana and coconut milk doesn't look good especially the coconut cream is so thick. It will be better with coconut milk and tapioca pearl. Next time you should eat in area less tourists. It will cheaper and delicious.
yes dont have tea will make you want it more!! haha..oh that banana chips :D hell yes, i miss that :D its so good!.. - lol a hero that you didnt need haha, but this is like jakarta :O - the funny thing is you just need to go and put ur hand out.. they rather not have their bikes/cars scratched by pedestrian than hitting you haha :D - i guess every asian countries is similar in terms of traffic and crossing the road experiences lol
LOL! yeah.. i've learned during this trip to really just to watch for the bikes and let the cars through. i've never experience anything like Ho Chi MInh though, definitely a first for the books!
You would perfectly fit in with the locals because you look like Vietnamese too....LOL!
haha yeah! some locals spoke to me in Vietnamese at first and switched to english when they realised i had no idea what they were saying
@@JaniceFung Hahahaha!
Please visit 🇵🇭 ❤️❤️❤️
i'd love to! what places would you recommend?
El nido, coron palawan, or siargao. I mean all places in the philippines are worth your time. 😁
Wait, if all those places gives you refund for the elevator and they don't know...can you got to many cafes and get many refunds? 😜😜
That’s EXACTLY What I was thinking! Like what if I just walked up those stairs and ask for a refund?! How would they know ?! 🙄
3000 is like 10cents not worth the bother lol
@@paulharfield7277 😅😅
Hey
I think the west when they get their driving license they must do a three month driving in Vietnam before they can pass 😂😂😂😂
That building looked so unique. It's a classic example of how socialist Vietnam has secretly become a capitalist nation. Those pineapple biscuits looked yummy.
Shame about that hard banana! Would've been a great dessert otherwise.
Yay for your saviour!
Haha yeah! Dessert and pineapple 🍍 biscuits were delish !
Also I would’ve given up on crossing the toad if it weren’t for him!
There's an art to crossing the streets in Vietnam. Like the man did, put out your hand and have eye contact and start walking at a steady pace.
