As number of MEPs, yes. But FdI is governing a country, while PIS is not. Moreover, Italy is much bigger as an economy and as a population than Poland. And to add on that, PIS became a pariah in European politics and as such they don't have much influence outside the ECR, while Meloni managed to collaborate with Brussels increasing her influence on the European stage.

No she is not. She is just excellent at giving populist speeches. Every time she talks about some matter she just fakes up data or attacks easy targets (for example the leftists, the immigrants, the LGBTQ community). She never takes the blame for the unsuccessful actions of her government and instead tries to censor the press taking control of the national TV and reporting all the journalists who criticise her lead. If you got two diametrically opposed parties in a coalition, you'll literally get nothing done. Just look at Germany. FDP and the Greens are basically arch enemies, yet they're in a coalition. And now nothing gets done. Some wild, hair-brained schemes get approved, which a normally-functioning government would never do. E.g. pension reform, the building of the hydrogen infrastructure, etc.

The only real obstacle to this was the AFD, as the CDU/CSU and their allies refused working with them under any circumstances. Even if the FPÖ were to not back such a coalition, they would still likely have the numbers for it to work.

This is about an EU president facing opposition and REACTING BY TRYING TO PIVOT -- not about Italy's Prime Minister. If EU president Ursula van der Lyn has has affiliated with leftist parties and built her base on that affiliation, THEN conservatives have no business teaming up with her.
Meloni is the only one of these three women to be a Prime Minister of an important EU country. It's not a good look to cheapen that by joining a coalition headed by van der Lyon.
Here's why, and it's not just about who's the big cheese. Many of the conservative votes in this EU parliamentary election, especially those of the youngest demographic as well as the oldest, ARE ACTUALLY VOTES AGAINST Van Der Lyn and repressive globalist policies she did nothing to discourage.
Conservatives may not win enough votes to take over leadership of the EU with this one election. However, the pendulum is swinging the other way and gaining momentum. Van der Lyn should put a moist finger in the wind and guage its direction, then step off the podium before she gets knocked off of it.
It would be refreshing to see alliances in the EU Parliament consolidated on an issue by issue basis, rather than reflecting deals made at a crucial moment by leaders of disparate oarties who then instruct members to vote in lockstep.
The demands by the left for solidarity of elected representatives is what's causing a lot of the hardening of positions in the US -- and thereby threatening the democratic basis for a representative Republic -- although Joe Biden will claim otherwise in his rigid Demicrat party talking points, pushing just one of the autocratic electioneering tactics that is backfiring for leftists in the 2024 contest.
Meloni succeeded after the weaponization of the Italian government undermined Matteo Salvini for his stance and actions on overwhelming international migration using Italy as the gateway to the EU, but he now serves as one of Melon's highly placed government ministers. That reality suggests that she should steer clear of any parliamentary coalition headed by Marine LePen -- because we know the press/medua is going to smear Meloni with the baggage of LaPen's father, just the way they tried to smear her with the old history of the name of the party she now leads.
I'm not familiar enough with the operations of parliamentary systems or the politics of pluralities in countries subject to parliamentary legislation (ir of their larger supranatural organizations) sufficiently to suggest what Meloni "should" do with these overtures. But it shouldn't hurt for her to keep her own counsel rather than be prodded by this kind of news analysis.
After the votes are tallied up, what shakes out in the EU, should dictate leadership decisions.
Salvini teaming up Italy's conservative and formerly secessionist Northern League with its southern left wing Five Star Party didn't have staying power. Yet rebranding those conservatives as La Lega seems to be a good evolution. As soon as the words "far right" are written or spoken, people increasingly recognize a left wing propaganda slant to the message.
Stated again, EU conservative parties attracting voters in numbers that surprised many observers is a rejection of the policies of the current EU president Van der Lyn (sp?) as well opposition to the ideological takeover of the EU by WEF extremists and climate change hysterics whose first policy impulse is to limit agricultural production of food by destroying daiiry herds and animal husbandry and putting sudden radical limits on fertilizer, even in the face of agricultural consumption in the EU being threatened by a ground war in Ukraine and, in Italy, evaporation during the pandemic of the water supply in its longest river, the Po.
Van der Lyn needed to lay off turn on the civil liberties of European people, but she's been proving herself to be a power hungry career politician -- allowing Europeans to be put at risk of physical hunger. She didn't even stand up to to calks by the US Democrat president, Biden, to destroy the Nord Stream pipeline linking Russia and Germany, which represented an important advance in economic integration of Russia and an international cooperative basis for hope for maintaining peace on the Eurasian continent. He was running the idea up the flag to see who would saluted and no one in the EU leadership stood up to object. It's as if no one learned anything from the Nuremberg trials.
There's no point in even getting into who would succeed Van der Lyn; Mario Draghi would not be throwing a bone to the Italians, as the world has already already seen enough off of his leadership, and his election just could represent spite work against Meloni.
The reality is the the United Nations has lost the plot -- and catastrophically failed to prevent war in Europe, but instead turned to spreading existential fear to empower long-term energy agendas based on unprovable climate theories that give lip service to equitable global governance policies -- but in practice threaten to deprive developing and so-called third world countries of economic growth, efficient energy, and adequate nutritional sustenance, even while publicizing concerns about exactly the type of population collapse it seems to be engineering.
The EU has similarly lost its way morphing from the Common Market with flexible rules for entry into a roach motel where a member countries can never leave without a full spectrum of stalling, slow walking and foot dragging by EU politicians who refuse to bargain in good faith, as we watched year after year with Britain.
Meanwhile it has never come to terms with the unworkable infrastructure of an EU currency and Central Bank monetary policy excperiment piping the tune over 27 countries with vastly different fiscal policies and disparate records of tax collection, which means that some countries benefit from inflation while others not so much, , or not at all, inevitably leaning toward forcing some countries to bail out others, while crippling the financial growth of these neighboring nations through austerity measures. NATO also has transformed self and its new members into something it was not designed to be, as academics continue to pretend the national boundaries which were arbitrarily drawn during the chaos at the end of World War II are inviolate, even though there are some 60 instances of border changes codified since that global bloodletting ended.
Europe would do well to start putting the interests of its people first, and stop putting its faith in multinational politics. As far as emulating the United States and sewing together a United States of Europe, it should recognize that the US fought multiple wars with or backed by European powers on its own soil and engaged in a deadly and crippling War Between the States, less than a century from its founding -- and is niw flirting with ideas of civil war, again under the influence of European ideologues and other elitist academics who are enamored with experimental political, economic, and social theories.
This is a call for pragmatism, especially when a country's people are showing their displeasure with convoys of heavy equipment in the streets or simply marching and rioting in the streets -- rather than elected politicians trying to ignore them and indoctrinate them and even conscript them, which seems to reflect the policies of France's Macron. The bottom line is that excessively large political and economic entities and central planning ARE AT ODDS WITH THE WELL BEING OF MOST PEOPLE ON THE PLANET, when we move much beyond the building of essential infrastructure and the maintenance of facilities and services which support the public good, such as supplying water removing sewage and garbage building and maintaining roadways, maintaining a sound currency, setting and enforcing a code of laws for personal and commercial conduct, maintaining defense capabilities sufficient to deterring aggression -- and engaging in international diplomacy that fosters lucrative trade and communication rather than competing sets of hair trigger alliances.
If nobody from nowhere like me can recognize these fundamental realities, why do we keep allowing human race to be led into catastrophes by following leaders informed largely by political expediency and simplistic utopian dreams of controlling large populations with indoctrination, authoritarian corercion, and grab bag of short-term incentives and disincentives, supported by experimental economic and social rule making which benefits nothing but a parasitic bureaucracy.
