- Everyone should explore Tokyo at night. And so tonight, we walk across the whole city at midnight to see what Tokyo has to offer. From the rooftops, and backstreets, to the nightclubs and bars... This is Tokyo at night.

*What was your favorite area in the vid?* Let me know down below!!
Can't get enough Tokyo Night exploration? Here's a whole playlist!!
ua-cam.com/video/4z7-yFXXKL0/v-deo.html
Norm walking a straight line across Tokyo? IMPOSSIBLE! Not when there are so many inviting side alleys ready to seduce him to go down them. ;P
Thank you for making this video! Favourite area? Hard to tell, since we only got glimpses of all that is to see. Is it possible to get a better map of your walk?
Great video :3 I did those night walks a few times and I really love those :) I am wondering about one thing tho; How do you get on all those rooftops? I have to admit, I never really checked, but can you just go up there without any security checks? o.o
If you cant ever play Shamisen again do you get some kind of financial reumbirsement for loss of quality of life and literally loss of part of your ability to make earnings?
東京レンズさん、あなたの発音は不正確で迷惑です。厳しくてごめんなさい。
Its insane to think about how much personality each small alleyway has in the middle of a city as big as Tokyo. Imagine the number of stories a single shop may have had in that one particular alleyway. And you passed so many in your walk.
you know its a good day when Tokyo Lens makes a new video
Amen to that
gotta love that notification squad~
glad to have you here!
Absolutely
@@TokyoLensWWWWWWWWWWWWOÒOOOOOOOOOO!
exactly what i had in mind when i clicked on it.
The fact that you can walk at night without having to worry about your safety is enough for me to want to visit. Can't do that where I live (because the weirdos come out at night). Really enjoyable video especially when KiKi makes an appearance.
I was just thinking the same thing. If I were to take a walk through Houston, Austin , Dallas, or any big city in the USA at 3AM, id be murdered within 20 minutes. I'm jealous of japan in a good way.
same, the fact that he can walk around that late at night with a fancy camera without a hint of worry is just unimaginable from someone living in South america.
England is like this, you can just walk anywhere, anywhen, love it, particularly love Portsmouth, Strong Island.
@@MostlyPennyCat I agree. Most parts are like this, at least it seemed to be on my visit. With the exception of London. Been there. Gets sketch at night. At least my death in the US will be quick and painless. I'm not too keen on getting stabbed to death with a dull 4cm knife.
@@cadenswain158
Although death in the UK is more likely to come from a knife than a gun, that's not because we have a knife crime problem.
You are, in fact, more likely to die from a knife in the US than the UK.
But yes, there are places you shouldn't really at night in a few of the cities, especially London.
But that's London, you need to get out, see other places.
For anybody after ideas, I highly recommend the following:
Go to Yorkshire/Lancashire and hire a narrowboat for a week.
Book an out and back trip, you can do those double handed (two people) and it's like nothing else you've ever experienced, even believed possible.
If you want specifics, go to a town called Sowerby Bridge, contact Shire Cruisers, book a small 2-4 person boat and do a 7 day off and back route up to Todmorden, back to Sowerby and down the ways a bit and then back again.
Have breakfast and lunch on the boat, eat dinner at a pub.
Or, breakfast on the boat and moor at a pub for lunch (yes they have moorings, it's the best) and dinner.
Make sure you eat at the Three Wise Monkeys in Todmorden, book ahead.
Speed limit is 4mph.
You get nowhere slowly but it's a revelation.
It's relaxing without being boring, because you can never be bored with a hundred ton house boat.
That they just give to you.
Even if you've never done it before.
Which seems insane and is a bit intimidating at first but it's glorious and we do it as many times as we can.
It's how we're retiring, so laps of the country until we die.
How can you walk all night and still have energy to work for the rest of the day? Man, you're something else haha thank you for the awesome ride 😀
I was thinking the same.
If I weren't a total loser at night, I would probably bike (and walk) a lot of those small streets and alleys, but as I am I could not ensure that I won't fall asleep on my bike. Or feel extremely down the next day.
I only made it from Shibuya to Shinjuku and i was so stuffed, needed 10 beers. 🤣🍺
Knowing Norm loves cycling, motorcycling and driving, at first I thought why did he choose to walk? But turned out he’s the best guide of Tokyo’s interesting hidden jams and back streets! I want to check them all with my eyes😆Thank you for the spectacular tour!✨
Hey there Yuka!! Thanks as always for the kind comment!!
Didn't you just release a video today too? I just took a look at your channel and it's growing SO FAST!!!
Keep up the awesome work!!
Safety at night in big cities is underrated a lot of times by those who live in them but it's a BIG one. Keep them coming, Norm
Your videos are making my parents consider a family trip to Japan... we've started talking about saving 😅 the hardest part but still something. We never really took it seriously because it's so damn expensive, but now the talking started
haha thats amazing!! best of luck!
I haven’t been able to recreate that feeling of going on the plane watching wierd Japanese shows and having Japanese airline food. And then when you land the excitement. It was such an experience and I’m happy you guys will feel it too
Also if my post wasn’t obvious you must do it. One of the highs of my life
I love cities, I adore cities at night, I don't think I could leave.
Luckily I already live on a beautiful island 🇬🇧
Tokyo transitions from ultra packed and busy to ultra quiet more quickly than any other city I've been to. But its also got more hidden area's and sudden surprises than anywhere else as well.
really love it!
I love walking around Kyoto at night. A lot of shrines and temples are open at night, so you can still walk around them at night time, and it’s really pretty. And some of them have lots of cats too 😆
The small alleyways are great, Tokyo seems like a great place to just go exploring.
I am so amaze how you can walk comfortably without thinking if someone will mugged you. Just wow.
Love this! When I was growing up in Tokyo (Kichijoji area) 20+ years ago, I was a teen so I never really saw this kind of late night atmosphere! But I definitely did walk through residential areas after dark and that deep quiet, "have the place to myself" feeling is very natsukashii. ❤
I'm stunned at how clean those alleys are. 😲
It’s impressive how clean everything is!
Norm is one of the best story tellers on UA-cam. I aspire to be on his level, but reality is, articulation of one’s thoughts is a skill on it own, this channel has reached level 100 on that stat.
Continue to inspire a lot more people Norm. Have a good one 😊
These city walks are always fun to watch. I hope you get a chance to do some more forest hikes, those are my favorite.
gotta wait for it not to be 40 degrees out! hahhaa
Those small shrines tucked behind all those alleyways are like checkpoints in a videogame where you rest and save your progress.
It looks amazingly clean and safe
It's so cool seeing the night part of Tokyo
I love seeing Japan at night. This was beautifully filmed and edited 💜
This is incredible Norm! Thanks for sharing it with us!
When you watch a video of TL you knw it is a great and amazing day😊
Tokyo is really one of the best places for "night photography". Even when you don't have these neon lights, the results keep being amazing, giving you that Japanese "traditional" style of the shops, combined with the narrow passes. Thank you for the walk Norm! Hope you are great!
And keep hydrated, it's really important in such a hot weather!
I love a sleeping city. Something so beautiful and magical about having a place usually packed and bustling all to yourself. It's like you can still feel the energy humming just below the surface but it's quiet and peaceful.
Also, always a huge fan of you showing us those tiny little hidden shrines!!
So happy that you made this video!! I love watching every min of this!
I was in Japan in 2019. Because of the time difference I was unable to get to sleep so I walked around Shiba Park from midnight to about 2 AM. Went back to the hotel and was able to sleep. I had fun. 11 minutes to Tokyo Tower and 4 - 5 minutes to the subway. 6 minutes to Zozoji Temple. It was like I had the city to myself. I want to go back so bad...
Edit: I understand that the Shiba Park Hotel has remodeled and is even better!
Second Edit: You walked right around the same place I did. Cool.
What an amazing walk! And magnificent to hear that your recovery is goin well!
I tend to get bad jet lag when I visit Japan and find myself waking up at very odd hours. When it’s 3am and you are wide awake what’s better than going for a walk and watching the sun come up and the city start to stir? Great vid Norm - thanks for reviving some happy memories!
I've been in Cyprus during a heatwave of 44°C, and yet Tokyo in the summer STILL felt hotter! It's ridiculous...but I love it! I can't wait to get back and explore again and bring my daughter and show her the country I love so much!
the sunrise was so beautiful! thank you for showing it to us!
I miss Tokyo!!!!! haven't been back since 2019.....
Got back from visiting Japan a couple of weeks ago, and I wish I did a full night walk like this when I was staying a few days in Ueno. Will save this video for reference when I next visit Japan. Thanks as always for the videos Norm!
What a great video!
Tokyo is a city that needs to be discovered and explored on foot and it always looks so much better at night. It's also really nice to see the east side getting a bit of love. Too many other videos focus on the west side. There's way more to Tokyo than those over done areas.
Although with 20minutes to official sunrise you had just enough time to get up to Ueno Park and maybe even Yanaka cemetery😁
Wonderful video, this has always been something I've wanted to do. Thanks for letting us experience this with you!
Loved this video, love the peaceful night vibe in a huge city. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Norm for walking across Tokyo and show me the night view which I wouldn't be able to see myself!!😊🗼🌃
I liked the Neon lights still on on small street😊
thanks Lemi!!
Love this! So much personality on the various streets. The video looks so clear. Well done sir!
Hi Norm! So glad you’re doing great and making these videos again. Have a great day!!! My favorite is getting to see all the amazing shrines.
This was really nice to watch, can't wait to visit Tokyo myself :)
Thank you so much~
I hope you get that chance sooner rather than later!
Walking in nighttime Tokyo is always so fun. I love watching the sunrise in the morning while in Tokyo. I am usually in the Asakusa and Ueno area, so I definitely have to check out the Shimbashi and Roppongi areas for nighttime walks in my next trip!
Hey! Asakusa is where I stayed in Tokyo. Cool
I love your music choices for this trip through the night. Really creates a neat vibe! thanks for bringing us on this fun trip through the city as well.
Hey Norm, I've been bingeing your videos since I discovered your channel about a month back. I love your content but most of all your positive energy and your fearlessness to try new things. It's inspiring and infectious and its taught me a few things that perhaps I needed to hear. Keep making cool videos! Excited to visit Japan later this year!
Welcome aboard!
Love having you here early
I always chat at the start of a vid release
so it gives us a bit of a chance to get to know each other
welcome to the adventure!!
@@TokyoLens HAHAH This is cool ;) I think you are possibly the coolest person. I sound like a kid saying that but no really I am 31. Side note have you been able to play the Shamisen again?
lol pretty sure I covered the answer to that right in this vid (^_-)
genuinely glad to have you here!!
Have a good one~
@@TokyoLens Aww that's a shame, but still great that you are able to make Shamisen videos! Thanks and just joined your Patreon
welcome to that side of the adventure!!
I have watched so many Japan related videos but this one really makes me want to go there right now. It's clean, it's beautiful, it's so nice.
That was such an enjoyable walk. I really like the little alleyways you duck through and find the surprise (!) hidden shrines.
So in 2020 I was about to move to Japan when the country locked down. I know it sounds odd, but one of the things I was truly looking forward to was being able to explore at night. Where I'm out it's not really safe to do so. I'm looking at at least visiting early next year and my list of things to look at is SO LONG
Also stay safe in the heat. This might have been better to do in September lol. Also also- I'd love to see this in longform, though I know that's a pain to edit.
Have a great week :)
Also also also, what's your bag? I keep getting smaller bags and then the PD clip doesn't work well on the straps. (I feel like I've seen this somewhere)
Always love this kind of midnight videos. It's always is so chill
I love your videos and live streams!!! Keep up the good work!!! Stay safe and take care!!! My favorite part of your video is the hidden back streets!!!
I love your videos where you walk through Tokyo - it's equal part soothing and fascinating to see the city at night.
Absolutely loved this video Norm! Having been to Tokyo and loved the night there, seeing your video is like missing an old friend.
I never tire of seeing somewhere I'm not yet able to visit, explored and explained so beautifully, thanks for all the work you put in to making these Norm!
The more I learn about the different areas and hidden gems in Tokyo the more I love it. Cant wait to come back again. Great video !
Always love your positive vibes so I’d like to thank you for that Norm. I spent the 2020-2021 lockdowns walking across London, listening to your podcasts, planning for better days…and here I am now, living in Tokyo, enjoying this video and thinking of walking across the city..thanks for being a source of inspiration !
I just love the vibes and the way you talk about life here. I plan on moving and ever since finding your channel it has made me want to move even sooner! Hope you and all here are having a good life!
Loved the video. I like how there is really no shortage of great picture spots in the narrows streets at night. The lights from the signs create an lovely glow to everything. Everything is so picturesque. Seems pretty nice to walk around at night, except for the terrible heat and humidity. Thanks for sharing!
These types of videos are probably by far my favorite of yours. I love the mini documentary as well, but these Tokyo night videos are so damn calming. Thank you for making these, they truly help calm my anxiety. Much love 🙏🏼
Thank you for sharing so many interesting spots, definitely took some notes for when I visit japan in the future. Really happy to hear that you are better after the meeting with truck-kun and am really looking forward to the launch of your new channel!
This video was so much fun and really took me back to when I first started watching you live, walking around the backstreets. Amazing atmosphere and as always you are in such a good mood, it lightens my day. Thank you
Love the night walks. Never stops being amazing that even at night, most of the city is so bright.
Lovely walk around a place I'm unlikely to otherwise see, thank you!
Thanks for another awesome video, love how the back streets are so tiny! I can't wait to explore them when I come back to Japan. Keep up the good work! 😊
Your videos are always full of curiosity and wanderlust, i love them so much, you find adventures in places most people wouldn't look at twice and it reminds me to look at the world with a childlike curiosity.
this is one of my favorite videos on youtube honestly, good vibes and very chill
been a while since you've done another one of these...
your videos calm me and help me to appreciate Tokyo for all it has to offer
Your videos have been reawakening my long time dream of visiting Japan! Thanks for sharing your adventures!
I'm definitely going to re-watch this video a few times, because the night vibe of Tokyo is amazing! 🤩
I love Norm's personality! He's so friendly and open to adventures! it makes me want to get out more myself! I'm going to Japan for the first time in September and this video along with a few others have inspired me to visit certain places that aren't super well known! Thank you Norm!
Literally been waiting for a new video ❤
Something about this video is so comforting. Thanks Norm 😊
Wow I'm glad you did something like this video. Gives a different view of Tokyo. Good job.
This was absolutely Magnificent!! I'm not into city life really but this was phenomenal. Loved seeing around at night, loved seeing the tiny alleys safe to go down at night but my favourites are the shrines hidden away ❤ The really tucked away one with the offerings was so beautiful ❤ Absolutely fantastic video ❤😊❤
I so love night walks, you're so lucky to be able to do that. I live in a big city too but there's no way I'd walk around it at night. The best part of the video for me was all the little alley ways. The tiny shrine was wonderful.
I'm so sorry you can't play the shamisen anymore. I know that was something you really loved doing. Thanks for the walkabout Norm. Take care.😊
There's something about quiet cities that it's enchanting. It's also something comforting about watching people start their days as well, can't describe it. Amazing video as always
This is already my second favourite video of yours, ever. I'm probably gonna be rewatching this one as much as I rewatch the night photography on rooftops video with Lukasz. I love the streets at night, and it was so good to see more of them, as well as some I recognized from my recent trip. I hope the pokemon cards we got for you are among those on the wall.
You hit on one of my favorite things about Tokyo-the fact that, even in the busiest parts of the city, all you need to do is turn onto a side street and suddenly you’re all alone and it’s very quiet. It’s never been a city that’s felt overwhelming to me, unlike other places I’ve been.
Yess! I love your streams!!! ❤ Thank you for braving the heat for us!
Since I started my study abroad in Tokyo last year I also just walk around in the city. It's just very calming to see such a big city calming down at night and having it almost to your self.
The only thing I don't really do is exploring the rooftops. Is there like a special mark or other thing you need to watch out for, for which buildings you can go on or do you just go on random ones?
Anyways thanks for the nice video :3
norm tugging at my heart strings again. the back streets of osaka.......amazing doesnt describe it.
Honestly Norm I just love watching your videos. It's always a nice comfy time and it's always super informative on stuff I never knew. I also kind of hope you do one of those "walking around X town in Japan" where it's just you walking maybe occasional talking or info dumps about stuff all raw and unedited as a 4-6 hour video to just chill out to with a little music in the background.
Me and my friend already made it to a ritual watching your videos. Watching you exploring japan from a narrative perspective makes it so much enjoyable.
Dawm I was needing a video from you today! I freaking love them, its just a feeling i cant describe!
Norm! Love these walk around videos, feels like I'm there with you. And dude, walking all night then a full day of work - you sir are a machine! But, also, thanks for the hard work and hope you take some time to chill and recover.
I'm learning to read and write/speak Japanese every day and planning to visit when I've ready to, so watching videos like this keeps me feeling motivated and inspired because sometimes it doesn't 'feel real'? Awesome video✌️😁 some lovely shots of the little back streets!
Really enjoyed seeing the hidden alleyways & shrines 🤗 I liked the quieter after hours vibe too😊
It's always good for Tokyo lens love it ❤❤❤
there's something surreal about seeing a busy and noisy city become calm and quiet. love these videos as always
Thank you for another video, I love your videos, I don't know why it give me a very chill vibe and I can relax drinking my coffee, the content is so high quality, the editing.. everything! thank you so much!
just seeing that last birdge to Akihabara give me chill down my spin. Last time I went to tokyo I use to take that bridge everyday, so many good memories, Thanks!
I’ve been in Japan for nearly two weeks now, and am loving it. Makes me appreciate these videos all the more :)
This is fun to see! I love adventures!! I'd love to see the many alleyways around... Glad you're getting better, too. Hopefully you'll continue getting better! Thanks for sharing this journey! 😃
Happy summer! A nice midnight walk. I love the beautiful day, sun but I'm also a creature of the night too. Not many people, cars, the air feels cleaner, the moon and stars, peaceful
What a way to start a day thank you SSOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!
I love how well lit all of the alleyways are.
What an amazing and busy life you're sharing! Thank you so mutch!
Another fun night time walk. Thanks Norm. Really interesting as always.
Loved this, walking around in the late evening/night was always one of my fav parts of previous trips! You touched on it briefly at the beginning but i was so amazed that they have construction work during the night and manage to do it so quietly! We came across some guys laying pipes or something, definitely involved underground and they were cranking something super slowly so that it would be quiet and honestly if we hadn't been standing next to them we wouldn't have known they were doing it at all! In the UK construction is generally limited to 8am-6pm due to noise (unless its work on the motorway) so it was rly cool seeing them work at 11pm !
i seriously love your videos, i do school online due to my anxiety about in person school. everyday i throw on any one of your videos while i do schoolwork and i genuinely love just listening and watching your videos while i work. i hope to overcome a large part of my anxiety and hopefully fly to and live in Japan someday. much love! 💗
You know the best part of Tokyo. I also walked through Tokyo through the night and it was really a fun experience. I want to do that again.
Thank you so much for the updates on your flying and shamisen. I am still heartbroken you can't play yourself, I love listening to tsugaru shamisen, but I am glad you are moving forward and keeping positive. Oh, and I am SUPER jealous of these night time Tokyo walks.Try and stay cool this summer. 😊💚
Thank you for sharing. 😊
