Years ago on a 4th of July when it was well over 100 degrees, I just felt like I could not cook in the house because I did not want to add more heat to the house. So I talked my husband and his friend into building a solar oven. They built it outside in that terrible heat (I was out there with them supervising!). What a loyal husband! I have used it many times. I usually use it when it is too hot to cook inside. It is great!
I remember years ago (somewhere around the late 1960's), reading a book which I had checked out of the local library, which had complete "DIY" plans (including actual dimensions) to make a solar oven out of sheet metal. - The oven box itself when built, was around 14"(width (front to back)) X 15" (in length) X 12" (in height). - It (the box), was painted inside and out with a high temp flat black engine paint that would withstand temps of around 500 degrees F. - It had a 1/4 inch glass plate installed into the panel on top. It had a hinged metal door in the front side (just like a real oven). - It had 3 or 4 folding sheet metal panels which were highly polished (towards the box side), attached with hinges around the top edges which could be positioned towards the sun to direct the sunlight down through the glass top into the oven box and onto the pan, skillet, etc. which was placed inside with food. - I remember that it had small vent slots (cut into the metal) to keep the inside pressure (due to excessive heat), stable to keep it from cracking the glass top (but after all these years, I can't remember where they were positioned at (but I think they were on at least 3 of the sides)). - The reason I mention this is because I have yet to see a solar oven made from metal, which would stand up to rough abuse (out in the outdoors camping world), which would last for any length of time. - Most of them for sale on the commercial market now-a-days are usually flimsily (and cheaply) made out of cardboard, which probably wouldn't last for more than a few uses. - Oh well, so much for the (supposed), "cheaper the better, and throw-away", modern technology. - Anyway, there are the basic dimensions, if somebody decided they wanted to try and build one for their own use. - I take no responsibility for any burned fingers, or other personal injury's (if incurred), in the building, or the use, of such a device. - P.S. The author who had built it himself, said it worked quite well, and a lot better than he expected, and it did stand up for many years of use, and abuse.
What too many overlook is the other possible applications.....Sure its good for an oven... but they can also be used as a hot water heater.. That oven gets up to 350 degrees internally if allowed to do so.. What about making a coil within the oven that could pass water through it??? And with enough ingenuity make it easily removable with a valve???
The All American Solar Cooker is not made out of cardboard. Quote AASC "The All Season Solar Cooker is constructed using 4mm corrugated polypropylene. A 2 mil outdoor rated reflective polyester film is pressure laminated to the polypropylene."
I have the newest model of The ASSC. Love it. I live in the desert so I use solar cooking almost exclusively. I have a Sun Oven, A UGLI Hybrid, and two big ones that I made out of stainless steel cooler cabinets. I really love the ASSC though simply because its so portable, and because I am up before dawn and outside (am a farmer) - I can start the ASSC as soon as the beautiful sun peeks over the horizon. If you put a paver stone under the trivet, it won't blow away.
We are just starting out at age 43 with a homestead and you and Patera are so wonderful. great to know you two are friends. good luck at the conference. praise god for your healing and witness.
Just bought the All Season Solar Cooker and we love it! Already made Hawaiin Chicken and it worked great. I slice the chicken horizontally so it cooked really fast.
I love my Sun Oven and use it often to cook all sorts of deliciousness: beans, rice, soups, etc. I've even baked bread on a 15F day in January with a couple feet of snow on the ground. Once, though, it cartwheeled across the backyard with my beautiful half-cooked stew inside. In a windy climate, tie it down. You can't say the following, but I can. Daniel 1:12 - Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Psalm 113:3 - From the rising of the sun to its setting The name of the LORD is to be praised.
Jen Goods Mine works great. My compliant with it is cheap screws that rust, aligners glued to glass pop off, thermometer broke a month old. For a few extra bucks that oven would be bulletproof, don't know why they skimp, but whatever.
Oh my gosh - I think it is the greatest and makes the best tasting food and cooks super fast on a hot day. I used my solar oven for the first time this month- it has been in storage for 2 years saved for Emergency Prep but we decided to have a practice week so we brought it out. We spent about $350 for All American Sun Oven. But using it for everything now. HOWEVER I have a Portable Rocket Stove and I love love love that for night time use especially.
It is so wonderful when I can come across the rare REAL talks about items. I value honest info so much, especially in this day and age where information can be driven more by personal interests (money gain, making connections, etc) than by a real interest to provide the truth. I have thought about solar ovens, both for home use and for camping, so this is good to know. Especially since any camping use would require something that could take a bit of a beating and still do it's job!
Great video. Thank you. I'm not a prepper or off the grid or anything.. I live in a major city actually... But I just thought the idea of a solar cooker was brilliant, and I figured it could come in handy in case of an emergency, like a hurricane, or a power outage. I think everybody has experienced a power outage in their life. And I just happened to have picked the all season solar cooker like the one you're showing in the video. So God brought me to the right one! And I'm glad you created this video to explain the differences between them, because I have seen all of those different solar cookers and I didn't know which one was the best. The main reason why I went with the all season was mostly because of the fact that it can use sunlight from sunrise to sunset whereas most other cookers it's mostly only in the middle of the day that you can use it. And I've still never used my cooker! I thought about cooking a chicken or or something, like I saw someone do online, I start to check it out because I'm afraid I'm going to spend money on the food and do the preparation and everything and then screw it up somehow. But now that the hurricane is about to plow through America I may end up needing to use it sooner than I thought. So thanks for the video much appreciated.
I just subscribed to you channel. I just found you channel. I ordered a solar over 2 or 3 years ago and have cooked in it several times. I retired 5 years ago and was looking for way to get buy incase everything went down. I have cooked all kinds of thing in it. I made video on some of it. Mine is a metal box with a glass top. I love the way it cooks. The only thing i don't have is a way to heat my house incase if the power goes out. I could get a kersine heater and buy kersine for it. I use to have one and heated my mobil home when my children were growing up. I don't have one now. I have stock up on freeze dried food. I live in town and my yard is clay so there isw no way I could put in a graden. I hope you and you family have a Happy and safe New Year. Be blessed. Thank you so much for sharing.
I love my sun ovens. My only "problem" with them is during the winter, we rarely have enough sunshine in W. Michigan to use it effectively. (Using the sun in Michigan can be challenging!) But it works wonderfully when we DO have sun -- I love to use them instead of heating the kitchen up with the oven/stove in the summer. I'm surprised you can control / regulate the temperature enough to incubate yogurt or dehydrate things -- never tried that. Huh! I think mine would get too hot or the temp would fluctuate too much.
6:19 What is it made of by the way? Is it either stainless steel or aluminum? Does it have any insulation material too like styrofoam on the sides and glass you can put on top?
I have acquired some large reflectix sheets that I'm going to make 3 or 4 different size ovens. I wonder if utilizing a car window glass for a front would make it get really hot in there.
This is the video ive been looking for. Thank you doo much for your time in sharing this with the world I haven't decided if i want to make a couple or buy one. Maybe one of each. Just thank you!!
@@StarryHilder Yesterday, I got All Season Solar Cooker at last. Then I used it for the first time today and it worked!!! What a great experience. Thanks to you.

Shared it on Facebook...Thanks for the giveaway, I've been looking at them. I'm so sad, I'm going to miss out on the conference this year, the money just isn't there. I went to the 1st one. I had a great time. I'm hoping to be back next year. Thanks Starry, sorry I'm going to miss you. You are an inspiration! Toodles!
Great Job Starry ! However, the dog walking nonchalantly in the background stole your thunder...so funny....lol....will buy one because of your video!!!
I wonder if you've heard about DIY solar oven that allow baking like lots of bread, cookies, etc. Plans are available, and for bigger solar cooker too, on Lytefire's website.
I'm too late for the giveaway, but really like what you said. How long are cooking times? I'm a vegan and cook veggie stews without the roast or chicken. Right now, in my apartment, I use an electronic pressure cooker and a small, for 2 people, plug-in rice cooker. Wonder if rice would do well adding green peppers, mushrooms, red onions, garlic, and maybe broccoli cauliflower asparagus, etc? It turns out beautiful in my QVC $19.99 Cooks Essentials cooker. They are on sale! Nice interior in it too, not Teflon and, thank you!
Barbara Mowrey yes oh my goodness this particular All Season solar cooker is perfect with a capital P for making rice and vegetables. The food will be Savory and juicy. But it also does crispy. There are few UA-cam videos online by folks who are demonstrating how to do rice and chicken with this particular All Season solar cooker in fact it was those videos that convinced me to get it
Similar to these you can use a Fresnel lens for very hot very fast cooking as seen from GreenPowerScience channel. If the solar oven is like a slow cooker, the Fresnel lens is like a microwave.
Hi Starry. I shared on Facebook and pinned on pinterest. My daughter is 22 and is a beginner to homesteading. She desperately wants one of these ovens after watching your video. I'm so proud of her doing such an awesome thing in her life. If we don't win one of these ovens I will be saving to get her one for her birthday in July. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
It could work with cast iron but it will take longer to get it heated up initially since it takes a lot of energy to heat the all that metal. You'd want to heat the pan before adding food as well since if you put food in at the same time it'll sit in the danger temperature zone longer. The advantage is if the sun gets covered by clouds it'll still stay hot for longer as well. Pros and cons to everything. Every solar oven retailer however recommends using the thin enamel pots though so I'd stick with their recommendation.
Hello Starry! Thank you for the great information. Shared on Facebook, twitter and email. Hope to see you at the conference next weekend! Have a wonderful blessed day!
Hi Starry, just shared this video on my Homesteading Board on Pinterest. Love your videos, I've wanted a Solar Oven for 3 years. Thank you for doing the giveaway, good luck to everyone and God Bless each of us!
shared on facebook, question, would the solar oven work, if you made a small she'd to help in cooler weather, windows on three side or something or in a small greenhose?
Excellent video Starry! Very informative! xoxo Love the honest feedback! And THANK YOU so much for the opportunity to share and possibly win a solar cooker! :) I shared your video to my Facebook! :)

i use that too!!! Great fruit leathers
I rise my bread in the car in the winter.
LOL, mine too unfortunately im the only one cooking inside....
Yes, I have heated many a pizza on top of the dashboard! For real.
That's true.

Thanks for actual real info i dont think the new ones would last either besides a cardboard box wrapped in heavy foil probally work just as good
Most of everyone who owns and cooks with a solar cooker use them on the road. Limited space, portability, and storage is what sells these things.

I'm so proud of her doing such an awesome thing in her life. If we don't win one of these ovens I will be saving to get her one for her birthday in July. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
fingers crossed and good for your daughter..thats to awesome!
Looking forward to the conference. Thanks for posting.
Starry... big Idaho howdy. shared on Facebook x 3 groups. showed guys at work and links to Instagram and Twitter. keep on rocking in the real world!
Wow, thank you for this!!
Old projector TV's are easy to find for free. The front screen is a Fresnel lens. I seen people make a frame for these and put them in front of a pot.
The cooking surface size like burner surfaces. Does it work with cast iron Dutch ovens? How about working with vertical can roasters?
It could work with cast iron but it will take longer to get it heated up initially since it takes a lot of energy to heat the all that metal. You'd want to heat the pan before adding food as well since if you put food in at the same time it'll sit in the danger temperature zone longer. The advantage is if the sun gets covered by clouds it'll still stay hot for longer as well. Pros and cons to everything. Every solar oven retailer however recommends using the thin enamel pots though so I'd stick with their recommendation.
these are great in a garden. But we live in a 10th floor appartment, with big sunny windows.
Hi Starry, I shared this to my Facebook community. I think this is awesome!
