"Jerry rigging" comes from the Second World War. The British referred to the Germans as "jerries," and towards the end of the war, spare parts for military hardware like tanks were so scarce that the Germans were forced to use whatever they could find and make it fit. This was referred to as "jerry rigging."
Actually that was a fundamental problem for the Germans as they over-engineered everything, so couldn't produce as much as the Allies. The Allies on the other hand went for lower quality mass produced items so there was never a shortage. Tiger tank being a good example.
@@keepsmilin468 Jury rig is correct. That term has been used for hundreds of years. It came from the term used to denote the temporary nature of a rigging. Jury mast - temporary mast until proper repair could be made. Jury rig, as a noun - the structure composed of spars, ropes, knots. Jury rig, as a verb - to fashion a temporary rig. I first learned of 'jury rigging' when I was learning a new knot. That knot was placed at the head of a temporary mast. That knot was first described in literature in the 1600s.

@Vincent T. actually it was written by several Jews, and Greeks, and Romans. What ties it all together is; that all of it was divinely inspired by the same Sovereign God, no matter who was inspired by Him to write it. That's how 66 books, written over several thousand years by several different writers, still reads as the single cohesive textbook that they make up. You might want to ask yourself a question. Out of hundreds of texts, sacred to hundreds of different religions, why is it only THIS ONE that so many people feel SO compelled to ridicule and mock? What is it about this ONE group of texts that causes so many people to strike out against it? Maybe it's that THIS ONE is the only one that rings true. And that looking at themselves from God's perspective makes people uncomfortable because it makes them see the truth about themselves, that they are flawed and in need of fixing.
I have used roasting bags inside my homemade solar oven. I made it with a used a car tyre stuffed with newspaper, cardboard at the bottom. Completely cover the inside with aluminium foil and I use an old metal grill bit to keep the pan off the bottom. I put a double glazed window on top. The black matt of the tyre gets really hot. I cook our dogs rice in it. I put it in the oven the night before so it gets the first sun. I've done pizza and biscuits. I've also dried figs in it. I made another solar oven by lining a cardboard box with silver foil and cut one side shorter so I could put a piece of clear perspex on top. I heat water in a black spray painted jar. Did you know you can put eggs in there in the shell and they will cook without water. Great video!

Edge 150, Did this guy marinate, season or prep the meat in some way? For some reason, I've tried different ways to dehydrate meat. But i cant get the meat to taste right.
Sister, It amazes me how much we have in common, for 2 people that are sooo different. I'm not financially burdened. I'm not to proud to dumpster dive. I have used canning rings to elevate things for cooking. Used them last year in my water bath canner, because I couldn't find the insert. Worked great. I pulled an old broken tv, for the screen, to use for "laser" cooking. Cut the center of the screen out, framed it, added legs to elevate, made sure it could be turned and tightened in place, and used it to fry breakfast, in direct sun. (Its beams light at 400°, so fast frying.) Those cold food bags and, clips are both available at Dollar Tree. So very inexpensive. Now, I'm going to have to try your sun shield oven. Having many options is so important. Thank you, and God bless you always . 😁👍❤
Wonderful! Solar is always good.. When camping, easiest way is to place pot on spot of dirt and wrap aluminum around pot, cone shape...results the same...if raining and camping can make an oven out of a covered pan, place charcoal bricks on bottom and place an aluminum pie tin over charcoal, then bake; and for stove cooking (eggs, bacon) use a vented tin can and cook on top. Did these activities with girl scouts years ago...fun times. Enjoy your channel very much, you truly share so much, so well. Thank you and have a blessed day.
When my children were younger, the whole family participated in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Loved doing meals in dutch ovens. We once did brownies in a foil lined box to prove to the kids you could cook with just solar energy. That was fun. Foil pack dinners on coals was also a favorite. Thanks for your video and a trip down memory lane.
I have been watching several other solar cooker videos. This has to be the quickest, easiest, and cheapest method that I've seen. Thank you for dumpster diving and making this video!!!
I’m so glad that I found your channel! Thank you for presenting information in a way that is easy to understand. Also, thank you for being low keyed and humble. I love that you don’t come across as being full of yourself as I see people often do. I can’t wait to give this solar cooking a try. Thanks again! ❤️
Jerry-rig. Lol. I came across this word just last week when I was trying to explain to my American aunt about a word with similar meaning we have in India, called ‘jugaad’. I sent her the link to this video to watch and understand jerry-rigging. Thank you for an amazing instructional video on how to rig up a quick solar cooker. I am going to try this one of these days. We have plenty of sun here and I am excited to see it work. Loved the scripture too.
what a great channel, continue giving this wonderful advice for the unfortunate souls who may be forced to do this one day. Knowledge is so valuable and not everyone has someone to teach them how to live independently. You cant control if its going to rain or not but you sure can bring an umbrella! have a blessed one! :)
Many years ago for the Girls Scouts, we made a solar oven by wrapping a box completely in aluminium foil. The box had a flap door similar to an oven door. We baked a cake and it was effective. Thank you for sharing your wonderful and inspiring ideas.God bless you abundantly!!
That's very impressive.. it's very much like cooking in a Crock-Pot isn't it. As I watched you put the oven together it occurred to me you can also use a cardboard box for the reflector frame then lay a pane of glass over the top. Thank you so much for your inspiration. You remind me so much of a Christa Sykes I use to play with as a child. I look forward to watching your videos and listening to the scripture God has given you. God's continued blessings.
What is "cultured" butter? We've been making butter for years and never heard of "cultured" before; take heavy cream, churn and ta-da, butter. Another item to use instead of a windshield thing, is an insulation blanket material (about a R-12 rating). It is essentially the same thing, but comes in different widths. It is often used to insulate ductwork and crawlspaces. The shiney coatings are metallic and will not deteriorate as easily as the mylar (plastic) used on the windshield reflector. If taping is your thing, aluminum tape is what you need here. This stuff is available from a home centre. If you need just a small piece, a HVAC company might be able to help you out. Greetings from Alberta, Canada.
Cultured butter is butter made from cultured cream instead of sweet cream. Culturing causes more of the butterfat to turn into butter rather than staying in the buttermilk. It is the buttermilk from cultured butter that the cultured milk product in the store that we know as buttermilk is meant to mimic.
good idea for a longer lasting oven. one like this would help conserve your heating materials (ie wood, charcoal, propane and the like) and one may obtain some of the material from a jobsite dumpster (ask first) thanks.
They also make a HOUSE WRAP that looks the same as the windshield cover except it is much thicker as it is to Reduce your electric bills by Insulating the outside of the home. My sons a contractor and built himself a mansion his electric bills are super reasonable given his ceilings are 9-14 ft. in all rooms. Non-fiberglass as well. I'll be looking for a leftover piece on one of his jobs :) Thank you for this video, I wondered how I'd ever afford a sun oven, now I know. I have no Central Heat & Air System so in the summers I rarely use the house oven as it can get quite warm inside without oven use, THIS IDEA IS PERFECT money saver on electric bills also. Now I can bake for the 10 grandsons 1 granddaughter and they don't have to wait for fall & winter to eat their favorites. Granny gets worn out just from the summer heat inside so this works for me, while they swim in the pool they will see the baking of the snacks to replenish their energy. Of course with youth that is always abundant no matter what. :) Though I may need more than 1 sun oven it is still very feasible.
I hope the grandchildren will treat grandma to either air conditioning (if you like it) or fans. And just give you the thick insulation house wrap. You sound like you truly deserve it.
Being a Yorkshireman, anything for free gets my approval LOL. Many of those improvised, though brilliant ideas, originated from the forces who, during times of war were often left with little to no option but to devise alternative methods for washing, cooking, and shelter. My old dad, for example, who saw action in Italy during WW2, said very little about his time in the forces. I remember one of his little snippets when he described how a few of his fellow soldiers painted the bonnets of army lorries matt black to absorb the heat from the sun and placed cooking utensils onto the painted bonnet surface to cook food, and heat water for brewing tea - which is not too dissimilar from your method. Talking of brewing tea - Britain’s National beverage for well over 150 years - being drunk by an American. I never knew tea was drank in America: being a Brit, I associate Americans with drinking coffee. It goes to show, we learn something new every day LOL. Thank you for another lovely video Christa. Best regards, Phil.
Well sir we love tea here. I drink both tea and coffee AND after having tea with my lunch, if I'm offered a cafecito (a sweetend Cuban expresso), immediately after, I'll drink that too😁 🍵 ☕ I prefer green tea and black coffee.
SteelCity321PB I’m a middle aged American hot tea drinker, never coffee (I always loved the aroma of it, but the good smell didn’t translate into good tasting, for me, anyway). I’m having my tea right now.
SteelCity321PB, Its kinda funny how we perceive things in other countries. Like when people think all swedes have blond hair.(I'm one of those people 😂) The one that really shocked me, was the toilets in china. I had no idea what I was looking at.😂 The thought never crossed my mind, that toilets somewhere else, would look so different than ours.😂😂😂

In Girl Scouts we baked in cardboard box ovens and flowerpot ovens and on top of modified #10 cans fueled by tuna cans filled with coiled corrugated cardboard soaked with paraffin (called Vagabond Stoves and Buddy Burners.) One of our favorite treats was individual pineapple upside down cakes. Use a a clean, empty tuna can. Place some butter and brown sugar and one pineapple ring in the bottom. Add yellow cake mix and bake. When it's done, invert it on your plate. It's a wonderful dessert!

I used and old Weber grill and a the car solar shade. Repainted the outside of grill base with heat resistant black flat paint. The grill has a flat wire grill in the bottom and is large enough for a large dutch oven.
I didn't read through the comments, so someone may have suggested this: you can get those metal binder clips from home/office shredding shops. Our local one sells them for a buck a big ziplock bag. MUCH cheaper than buying new! Great video, can't wait to try it out.
@@jroysdon You can do the same with tinfoil, clear tape, some metal wire which you can bend with your hands but isn't too easy to bend, and more time than that, which would also work more efficiently than this version. Though I'm not sure if it lasts longer or shorter than the version in this video. For the price of the materials, however, it's cheaper to make one from those materials than to buy a car shade and a bucket.

Thank you for sharing, splendid idea and your bread looks delicious. I would like to mention though that the Saigon Cinnamon has high amounts of coumarin in it and is toxic when eaten in large amounts ( more than a tsp a day) It can cause damage to your kidneys, liver and lungs. Ceylon Cinnamon which is considered True Cinnamon comes from Sri Lanka and Southern India and has far less Coumarin making it a safer option, if you are a Cinnamon lover and plan to eat it everyday ♥

I am trying to show/teach my new Daughter in law a few things when she brings the baby out, and this year I started with gardening, showing her the different ways I grow things and use what I have at hand... (she grew up in Calif. so she's possibly not that savy about Texas Country life) and next time they come out I will make a solar oven and see if I can cook us some peach cobbler. I think it should be easy enough if i start it as soon as they get here. I have peach trees and a can or two of biscuits, and can mix up some syrup and cinnamon and sugar to add to it. It's perfect timing because I just bought her a couple of sets of the screen things to go on the windows of her car to help keep her and the baby cool, along with a windshield sunscreen. Thanks for the wonderful idea. And I purchased a small crook pot for $10.00 at walmart last year and the inside bowl is black and comes out to wash and it would be perfect for this application. Stay safe and keep up the great work!

There is spray paint at big box stores that is meant for coating woodstoves and car engines--matte and high-heat tolerant. I am dying to try all-day baked beans!
As a boy scout den mother I taught the boys how to bake chocolate chip cookies while camping using items everyone has around the house. A cardboard box, the type with th a lid. Line all inside parts with aluminum foil. Use 2 wire coat hanger to make the rack half way in it. A little disposable tin in the bottom holds charcoal. Each standard size of charcoal is 30°F so you can adjust the temperature to whatever you're cooking. We baked cookies and cupcakes and it worked perfectly every single time. Obviously not a solar oven but good knowledge to know in a pinch. I've been a dumpster diver for decades lol
Summer cooking will go easy but winter will be challenging. Lol. We are prepping for solar power. We also ordered the beautiful big woodstove with a 40 gallon hot water tank attached. It’s made by the Amish and takes 8 months to craft. It’s the “Princess” stove. We are prepping for the ‘dark winter’- The psychopath G A T ES has announced that smallpox is coming.

The British referred to the Germans as "jerries," and towards the end of the war, spare parts for military hardware like tanks were so scarce that the Germans were forced to use whatever they could find and make it fit. This was referred to as "jerry rigging."
Wow !!!! Thanks for that!👍😁
Actually that was a fundamental problem for the Germans as they over-engineered everything, so couldn't produce as much as the Allies. The Allies on the other hand went for lower quality mass produced items so there was never a shortage. Tiger tank being a good example.
I've never been sure if it was "jerry rig" or "jury rig".
@@MrLikeke 😂 not some one who rigged the jury”
I have shared many of your videos with my team on Search and Rescue. We all love and appreciate your knowledge and expertise.
You are absolutely my favorite prepper. Love your prayers and education of knowledge. Keep up the good work, you are VERY APPRECIATED! May God bless you richly! 💕
Stay sweet 🤗 You are truly the sweetest woman with a great loving personality!
Never seen you before, I really like what you're all about, wow, I am just hearing you read the Bible. Bless you lady, I needed that so bad, I have lost so much faith in humanity and there are souless narcissists everywhere. You just made me feel that there is still a little secure and safe people left. I hope I made sense, I'm rambling. But I originally just wanted to pop up in the comments to ask if you were Native American. I'm from the Northern Ponca tribe of Nebraska. But live in Georgia lol..oh yeah and I just eagerly subscribed
@Vincent T. what little jeeew wrote the bible?
Don't feel weird she is a beautiful person. I always feel good everytime I see one of her videos. I get you with the Narcissist they are everywhere. God bless you all
@Vincent T. actually it was written by several Jews, and Greeks, and Romans.
@Vincent T. What?? Well Jesus sure gave people of His day an ear full. Oh yeah He was put to death too!
Maybe part. She definitely has that philosophy she mentions teotawaki
I watched a bunch of these sun oven videos this evening and yours is the best. It is truly the easiest and the most affordable. Thank you, ❤
I have used roasting bags inside my homemade solar oven.
Ty this is great. Ty for sharing.
Wow this is great information too! You should do a video.
A hard 'boiled' egg without water? I'd like to see a video on that!

I can’t wait to try this with my grandchildren! You are a blessing. Thank you for these videos and scriptures at the closing.
I live in Canada. Born in Nederland. My girlfriend since 35years is in Netherlands. I try today to lift her up.
She just went to bed after a long talk with me.
You inspired me today. And i hope i have inspired her to love herself.
And tell her all the time she need to learn how to love herself.
And don't let people all walk over her. She is such a great beautiful friend and mom and wife.
Thank you for this. Love you.❤🤗
I love this woman. I love the way she makes everything work just right great for being a prepper and being ready for when the power goes out
Beauty, grace, and positivity! I wish we were close neighbors but I'm so blessed that you are my sister! :)
What an inspriration, not just in jerry rigging, and preping :) but always sharing God's word, and your beautiful smile. It means so much in todays dark, hate filled world. It means so much.
Sister, I could listen to you for DAYS! how did you learn how to do all of this!
May the Lord bless you for all that you do and share 💕
Truly you are too cute😅...ya little dumpster diving queen of sharing treasures outside the box.
So many tips to make our lives better, thanks for being you. 💎: a gem of a channel.
I know a guy that made a solar oven to dry venison jerky. as always thank you for sharing Christa I just love you, your such a light. God bless!
Edge 150, Did this guy marinate, season or prep the meat in some way? For some reason, I've tried different ways to dehydrate meat. But i cant get the meat to taste right.
Great! This is so much cheaper than a solar oven on line. Thank you for this great idea. God love you!
I always love the scripture at the end. Hello from sunny Brasil. I agree with many of the good comments that you get
I have been watching several other solar cooker videos. This has to be the quickest, easiest, and cheapest method that I've seen. Thank you for dumpster diving and making this video!!!
Glad it was helpful!
"Bc I loveeee cinnamon and it's good for you"- w a big smile
🖤😊💛
I did exactly that. Just as you said. One black bucket. Cast iron.
Pot.
Cooked roast, potatoes, carrots and leaf of banana nut bread.
So warm today , just put leftovers in iron skillet, out in sun (lid so no flies), heated nicely in half hour before noon. Then a pancake took an hour.
Love you ideas, so cost effective but mostly that you share the Word. May hearts be softened.🕊
what a great channel, continue giving this wonderful advice for the unfortunate souls who may be forced to do this one day.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful and inspiring ideas.God bless you abundantly!!
if you own an instant pot, the metal tribbet that comes with it would work perfectly for the lifting item for the inside of your pot.
*Trivet 😉
Everything about you is a blessing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Forgive me Ms Swartz, for botching your last name. Your resemblance to that little Christa many years ago is uncanny.
God's continued blessings.
And she looks a lot like my youngest sister, who is also clever and creative.
Christa You are my favorite Prepper! I love your bright and cheery personality(which comes by way of God)!! Oh and all your teaching videos:)
All I can say is, God Bless YOU. You truly are a Blessing to others. Christ shines through you like a light
God Bless you my angel. 😊
Very powerful scripture !!
I am so glad I stayed till the very end! You set the pace for the rest of my day with the scripture from Ephesians. God bless you!
Dear Phil, many of us have English heritage and LOVE our teas and coffee! Lady grey to mention one.
And the Brits originally got tea from India. (I have British heritage.)
You are so pleasant sounding and happy 😊
😍I am amazed so cool. I just saw an old sun shade in our garage, I'm gonna have to try this!! Loved the scripture too! Christ is love Amen! ❤❤❤
Thanx, with our corrupted electricity suppliers and frequent loadshedding, this is much appreciated, God bless you and your sharing spirit!
You can also use turkey bags to enhance the heat and speed up the time. Do everything like you did. Just put the pot inside the bag.
I can tell that you are a kindred spirit. I imagine that you would be a lovely best friend to have or mentor for someone. What a very neat thing to see, thank you so much for sharing. God bless you.
I’ve been wanting to try a solar oven build lately and test it out. You’ve given some great tips and I love this version. Also love that you end in scripture! ❤️
Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy
I've been know to dumpster dive or pick up trash on the side of the road on trash night. Lol. Have found some real treasures that way!
Me too, several pieces of furniture in my home were aquired that way. I even scored a large (36" by 48") painting that way. When I looked it up, I found out that it's worth about $400.
This is a great way to have something baked on a hot day, without heating up the house! We used to do that in hot AZ where I grew up.
Wizzy wipes, Jerry rig you kinda impress me. To be so dreamy looking and be so roll up your sleeves practical. Always goodto see you and you have such practical info delivered with such grace and poise. GOD BLESS!
Dear Christa, may God always guide and protect you and your family in those stormy times? Reading Ephesians myself now. Love it and your show too. Blessings, sister!
Been thinking about how i could create one. Love that you posted this. Going to try this. You are always such a blessing to me. God will richly bless you
In Girl Scouts we baked in cardboard box ovens and flowerpot ovens and on top of modified #10 cans fueled by tuna cans filled with coiled corrugated cardboard soaked with paraffin (called Vagabond Stoves and Buddy Burners.)
One of our favorite treats was individual pineapple upside down cakes. Use a a clean, empty tuna can. Place some butter and brown sugar and one pineapple ring in the bottom. Add yellow cake mix and bake. When it's done, invert it on your plate. It's a wonderful dessert!
Lynn Behnke, Hello! If u wouldn’t mind, could u please describe how ur flower pot oven was made??? Did u bake the pineapple upside down cake n it??? I’d like to try this method of baking! Thank u sooo much, and have a wonderful day!
Oh, have I told you I love your channel? It’s always refreshing, encouraging, innovative, and just filled with pure Godly love. You are a blessing. Just the scripture reading alone makes your channel so unique and much needed. God bless.
I have no idea how I haven't seen your channel before, but I'm so grateful to have found you now! God bless you and your work!
Love this! You just inspired me and saved me about $400!
how?
@@bleebleeblahblah - The high-end solarcookers that can actually cook a turkey cost $350-400.
@@jroysdon 👏👏💕
@@jroysdon 😂😂😂
@@jroysdon You can do the same with tinfoil, clear tape, some metal wire which you can bend with your hands but isn't too easy to bend, and more time than that, which would also work more efficiently than this version. Though I'm not sure if it lasts longer or shorter than the version in this video. For the price of the materials, however, it's cheaper to make one from those materials than to buy a car shade and a bucket.
I'm liking and subscribing because she didn't ask me to like and subscribe and you can tell she's really happy and really loves what she does.
Such a wonderful woman. Thank you for what you do. God bless.
Your Bible reading was the real goddie! I was planning to build a solar cooker for my FILIPINO wife here in PHILIPPINES. I am a pastor from India...and we used solar cooker there.
God bless you...SHALOM! MABUHAY NAMASTE!😂
wow. Who would've guessed. Darn I've thrown these things away before! Thank you so much for this information!
Thank you so much. You are truly an inspiration and thank you for always including God and His precious word. Have a blessed day.
I thought she meant to say Ceylon cinnamon. I've not heard of Saigon cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon is top shelf.
This looks like fun. Free energy. I am going to try this little project with my 11 year old for Home Economics since we are homeschooling.
Oh my gosh this was one of the best videos I've seen lately. I was actually thinking of buying a sun/solar oven. I'm so excited to try this and SAVE hundreds of dollars. Thanks!!!!💕
Go for it, Rebecca!
Does the wind mess you up? I'd need buckets, or rocks
@@cindyrobertson3798 - Yes, the wind can knock her set up over and animals may be attracted to the smell of cooking food. There are lots of videos here on YT that will give you more ideas on how to build a solar oven, from a simple cardboard box to an elaborate one from wood, that you can pick and choose from for your level of handyness and what you have available. Best of luck to you! 👍👍
Ah, Christa YOU'VE BEEN GREEN BOX SHOPPING AGAIN GIRL Ha! 🤭 Good job and good to see you! Pinkies up!
Green Box Shopping! Touche’!!!
Thanks for this! We did it with 2 shades, a crock pot liner, oven bag and butterfly chair. Your video got us started on solar cooking! The butterfly chair has just the right tilt for our situation, and is easy to rotate as the sun shifts. Today we are making chili!
Hi there..Im a little late to this video but saw your comment & was hoping you could provide instructions for how you made your oven. I have the right materials you stated so wanted to try it. Thank you 😊
You have a great personality.
There is spray paint at big box stores that is meant for coating woodstoves and car engines--matte and high-heat tolerant. I am dying to try all-day baked beans!
This is so cool We finally got to see you truly. Love this thank you
As a boy scout den mother I taught the boys how to bake chocolate chip cookies while camping using items everyone has around the house.
We are prepping for the ‘dark winter’- The psychopath G A T ES has
announced that smallpox is coming.
I’m going to do this with my grandchildren. Thank you so much for this.
You are a delightfull lady.
This is the real tv. Life lessons! Thank you. Subbed
Thank you!
I was just looking on Amazon for solar cookers. They were hundreds of dollars. Thank you for this very affordable option.
Awesome video! Thank you! I can't wait to try this! By the way, you can buy cheap silver car window shades at the Dollar Tree for one dollar. I'm planning buying a few my next trip there so I can make my solar oven(s). Take care & God bless!
God bless you for showing us how to upcycle and for the Scripture!

Awesome,! Joe long for ribs,,?
Diana Blanke .... Long as we still have the sun 🌞 it's mostly cloudy ⛅ or rain! ☁☁☁☁⚡☁☔🌂 I live in Maryland 🇺🇸 I don't know where you are at? 😃
What kind of sun oven do you use?
@Kathy Davis no the All American Sun Oven is a commercially sold sun oven that is larger than the one that Christa made. The point of this video was to show you how to make one on the cheap, without having to shell out the money to buy one.
Thank you for blessing us with the solar oven instruction. A wonderful spot of tea and bit of crumpet! May you and all of those that you love stay safe and blessed.
Fantastic real-world solution. Thank you!👏
Your voice and the way you speak made this video so easy to enjoy and watch. God Bless you sister! I’m going to try this exact recipe
Dollar Tree always has the black binder clips, usually 4 for $1. They're great to keep on hand.
