Me and my mother did this a lot (dumpster dive) whatever we could find that could be reupholstered, repurposed and useful we fixed the items and sold them at swap meets here in CA. I learned how to do this as young as 5 it was an adventure for me I never seen it as survival my mother made it fun but now as an adult I realize she was trying to provide for her children. Father left us and we were living from family member to family member even slept under a bridge. Life was hard my mother at times wouldn’t eat and gave me her last just so I wouldn’t go to sleep hungry. She saved enough from all the dumpster diving and had enough to get a small apartment and eventually got a job. Back then oh the adventures we had not realizing the things a mother would do for her children ♥️ God bless ALL mothers

I used to be a fourth teacher many, many years ago, my fourth grade students followed directions and built a small sun oven with a shoe box and foil paper. They also cooked some hotdogs and toasted the hotdog buns. They loved it. We had a picnic outdoors and they ate all their food.

"Jerry rigging" comes from the Second World War. The British referred to the Germans as "jerries," and towards the end of the war, spare parts for military hardware like tanks were so scarce that the Germans were forced to use whatever they could find and make it fit. This was referred to as "jerry rigging."

Actually that was a fundamental problem for the Germans as they over-engineered everything, so couldn't produce as much as the Allies. The Allies on the other hand went for lower quality mass produced items so there was never a shortage. Tiger tank being a good example.

    • @MrLikeke
      @MrLikeke 3 роки тому +14

@@keepsmilin468 Jury rig is correct. That term has been used for hundreds of years. It came from the term used to denote the temporary nature of a rigging. Jury mast - temporary mast until proper repair could be made. Jury rig, as a noun - the structure composed of spars, ropes, knots. Jury rig, as a verb - to fashion a temporary rig.
I first learned of 'jury rigging' when I was learning a new knot. That knot was placed at the head of a temporary mast. That knot was first described in literature in the 1600s.

@Vincent T. actually it was written by several Jews, and Greeks, and Romans. What ties it all together is; that all of it was divinely inspired by the same Sovereign God, no matter who was inspired by Him to write it. That's how 66 books, written over several thousand years by several different writers, still reads as the single cohesive textbook that they make up.
You might want to ask yourself a question. Out of hundreds of texts, sacred to hundreds of different religions, why is it only THIS ONE that so many people feel SO compelled to ridicule and mock? What is it about this ONE group of texts that causes so many people to strike out against it? Maybe it's that THIS ONE is the only one that rings true. And that looking at themselves from God's perspective makes people uncomfortable because it makes them see the truth about themselves, that they are flawed and in need of fixing.

I have used roasting bags inside my homemade solar oven.
I made it with a used a car tyre stuffed with newspaper, cardboard at the bottom. Completely cover the inside with aluminium foil and I use an old metal grill bit to keep the pan off the bottom. I put a double glazed window on top. The black matt of the tyre gets really hot.
I cook our dogs rice in it. I put it in the oven the night before so it gets the first sun. I've done pizza and biscuits. I've also dried figs in it. I made another solar oven by lining a cardboard box with silver foil and cut one side shorter so I could put a piece of clear perspex on top. I heat water in a black spray painted jar. Did you know you can put eggs in there in the shell and they will cook without water.

Sister, It amazes me how much we have in common, for 2 people that are sooo different. I'm not financially burdened. I'm not to proud to dumpster dive. I have used canning rings to elevate things for cooking. Used them last year in my water bath canner, because I couldn't find the insert. Worked great. I pulled an old broken tv, for the screen, to use for "laser" cooking. Cut the center of the screen out, framed it, added legs to elevate, made sure it could be turned and tightened in place, and used it to fry breakfast, in direct sun. (Its beams light at 400°, so fast frying.) Those cold food bags and, clips are both available at Dollar Tree. So very inexpensive. Now, I'm going to have to try your sun shield oven. Having many options is so important. Thank you, and God bless you always . 😁👍❤

    Wonderful! Solar is always good..
When camping, easiest way is to place pot on spot of dirt and wrap aluminum around pot, cone shape...results the same...if raining and camping can make an oven out of a covered pan, place charcoal bricks on bottom and place an aluminum pie tin over charcoal, then bake; and for stove cooking (eggs, bacon) use a vented tin can and cook on top. Did these activities with girl scouts years ago...fun times. Enjoy your channel very much, you truly share so much, so well. Thank you and have a blessed day.

That's very impressive.. it's very much like cooking in a Crock-Pot isn't it. As I watched you put the oven together it occurred to me you can also use a cardboard box for the reflector frame then lay a pane of glass over the top. Thank you so much for your inspiration. You remind me so much of a Christa Sykes I use to play with as a child. I look forward to watching your videos and listening to the scripture God has given you.

What is "cultured" butter? We've been making butter for years and never heard of "cultured" before; take heavy cream, churn and ta-da, butter. Another item to use instead of a windshield thing, is an insulation blanket material (about a R-12 rating). It is essentially the same thing, but comes in different widths. It is often used to insulate ductwork and crawlspaces. The shiney coatings are metallic and will not deteriorate as easily as the mylar (plastic) used on the windshield reflector. If taping is your thing, aluminum tape is what you need here. This stuff is available from a home centre. If you need just a small piece, a HVAC company might be able to help you out. Greetings from Alberta, Canada.

    • @juliebaker6969

Cultured butter is butter made from cultured cream instead of sweet cream. Culturing causes more of the butterfat to turn into butter rather than staying in the buttermilk. It is the buttermilk from cultured butter that the cultured milk product in the store that we know as buttermilk is meant to mimic.

They also make a HOUSE WRAP that looks the same as the windshield cover except it is much thicker as it is to Reduce your electric bills by Insulating the outside of the home. My sons a contractor and built himself a mansion his electric bills are super reasonable given his ceilings are 9-14 ft. in all rooms. Non-fiberglass as well. I'll be looking for a leftover piece on one of his jobs :) Thank you for this video, I wondered how I'd ever afford a sun oven, now I know. I have no Central Heat & Air System so in the summers I rarely use the house oven as it can get quite warm inside without oven use, THIS IDEA IS PERFECT money saver on electric bills also. Now I can bake for the 10 grandsons 1 granddaughter and they don't have to wait for fall & winter to eat their favorites. Granny gets worn out just from the summer heat inside so this works for me, while they swim in the pool they will see the baking of the snacks to replenish their energy. Of course with youth that is always abundant no matter what. :) Though I may need more than 1 sun oven it is still very feasible.

Being a Yorkshireman, anything for free gets my approval LOL.
Many of those improvised, though brilliant ideas, originated from the forces who, during times of war were often left with little to no option but to devise alternative methods for washing, cooking, and shelter. My old dad, for example, who saw action in Italy during WW2, said very little about his time in the forces. I remember one of his little snippets when he described how a few of his fellow soldiers painted the bonnets of army lorries matt black to absorb the heat from the sun and placed cooking utensils onto the painted bonnet surface to cook food, and heat water for brewing tea - which is not too dissimilar from your method.
Talking of brewing tea - Britain’s National beverage for well over 150 years - being drunk by an American. I never knew tea was drank in America: being a Brit, I associate Americans with drinking coffee. It goes to show, we learn something new every day LOL.
Thank you for another lovely video Christa. Best regards, Phil.

I am trying to show/teach my new Daughter in law a few things when she brings the baby out, and this year I started with gardening, showing her the different ways I grow things and use what I have at hand... (she grew up in Calif. so she's possibly not that savy about Texas Country life) and next time they come out I will make a solar oven and see if I can cook us some peach cobbler. I think it should be easy enough if i start it as soon as they get here. I have peach trees and a can or two of biscuits, and can mix up some syrup and cinnamon and sugar to add to it. It's perfect timing because I just bought her a couple of sets of the screen things to go on the windows of her car to help keep her and the baby cool, along with a windshield sunscreen. Thanks for the wonderful idea. And I purchased a small crook pot for $10.00 at walmart last year and the inside bowl is black and comes out to wash and it would be perfect for this application. Stay safe and keep up the great work!

A cardboard box, the type with th a lid. Line all inside parts with aluminum foil. Use 2 wire coat hanger to make the rack half way in it. A little disposable tin in the bottom holds charcoal. Each standard size of charcoal is 30°F so you can adjust the temperature to whatever you're cooking. We baked cookies and cupcakes and it worked perfectly every single time.
