I have a JCW with the arm rest, one thing you might not know is when you lower it till it locks in place, you can actually push the button in to raise it to lower it even further so it's sloped down at an angle. Makes it much easier imo if you want an arm rest and still be able to change gears!
My first Mini was a 2017 F56 S with the JCW Pro Tuning kit & exhaust. It was great. For whatever reason I decided to trade it and tried a few other cars. Fiesta ST, ND2 Miata, & Mk7 GTI but they all felt like something was missing. Finally decided to get another Mini. This time a 21 with the digital dash and a few more creature comforts & even without pro exhaust it's so much more fun then those other cars. I still can't place exactly what it is but something about the Mini's just puts a smile on your face when you're behind the wheel. It's not the fastest or the most well put together but damn they are fun to drive!
Great comparison. Not sure I’ll be changing my M140 for a Mini though. Even though I was recently eyeing up a genuine 1968 Mini Cooper which was immaculate.
Made same move, went from a M140i to a Mini F56 JCW auto. Wanted something with a character and found M140i to have some odd handling. Had M140 for a year and JCW for 3.5, need I say more. Sold Mini last month and moved to a 430d GC. Needed space as kids growing up. Refined, looks good, shed loads of torque but sooo much heavier. Wondering if I made right move but think I’d have needed an M4 to get simular performance & fun factor from 4 series! A lot of ppl asked why I didn’t get a cooper s and tune it rather than pay the extra JCW. Apart from the styling the JCWs have: Different stronger pistons Different compression ratio Larger intercooler. The obvious larger brambo brakes Yes you can stage 1 a copper S to 210, but you have to ask, why would BMW go through the trouble of upgrading the engine as per above if mapping offered a similar reliable alternative….
Had both in the family, M140i went a couple of years ago as my daily and now we have a JCW Clubman which is my wife’s daily. It’s a great daily with the right options, and Sarahs is a 2017 so has good sound too. Run flat tyres ruin the ride but it sits lovely on the motorway when cruising.
I've been nearing the end of my Uni debts I built up from pissing money away, for no good reason. I spent the past year or so changing my mind every couple of months as to what car I would buy. A JCW is one that I never even thought about, so thanks for this. 👍
i was a coin flip away from a M135i and the JCW....would have been really happy in either. After a few test drives, an M135i popped up in budget and on spec. I went for it....and zero regrets. But (!) i still trawl all the usual places for a JCW bargain just in case! love the content Luke 🤙
Just moved from Mini Coop S to M240i. Was looking at JCW then realised what i could get with the same budget, and once i drove the M240i there was no comparison 🙂 What an engine that B58 is. Sounds mint going above 3500 revs. I would agree though, the steering feel is much nicer in the Mini. They should've talked to each other to develop better feedback on the electronic steering in the BM, or just stayed with hydraulic steering 🙂
Hi Luke, really enjoyed the video. I think obviously looking at the M140 in complete stock form it doesn't look to much different to a regular 1 series. However visual tweeks like what this one has had makes all the difference. Once you've played around with your JCW line them up side by side and then do the comparison. Guaranteed your fuel costs will be cheaper and with a simple map or tuning box you'll be pushing 300bhp which for UK roads us all you need. Servicing and running costs will be cheaper for the Mini and you won't need an sharp intake of breath every time a raindrop hits your windshield. I personally think for the money there's nothing better for the money than a JCW in terms of fun, prestige and economy. That being side an M Lite car would always be a guilty of pleasure of mine perhaps later on life!
I know this is an old video.. but I made the mistake too. At 3:03 you mention that the new ones come with a ZF8. That's wrong, it's actually the same Aisin but with 2 more gears. It's actually not "shitty" like you said either, it's quite good in my opinion. The ZF is only mounted in the AWD-versions like the clubman.
Love how customisable Mini’s are. Huge amount of aftermarket parts, but some definitely need deeper pockets. For me the cross spoke wheels are the best, just really expensive
I looked at the m140i but couldn't justify the £££. After a drive of another fast beemer and a pug 308 GTI, I went with the GTI; so far so good. Fairly economical when i want it, but great fun on the B roads 👍
Honestly I'm on a m240i right now but thinking maybe JCW for the next one for economic sake. How is the suspension, I've heard is quite harsh for a daily
I had a JCW a couple of years ago with the idea being that it would be a better version of the R53. I hated it- One of the biggest problems was that the clutch was ridiculously heavy (heavier than any other manual i've driven including 3x R53s). I'd consider trying an auto version. Can anybody let me know if all F56's have an extremely heavy clutch or was it just mine?
I could do with a new mitt so the Gtechniq and some backup citrus pre-cleaner will do nicely! Was nearly a winner on a car giveaway but the detailing bits will be a nice small win 😅 Great comparsion mate
Hi mate shaunas brother inlaw hear I had a Cooper s f56 for about 3 years loved it good car definitely res delete totally changed how the car sounds currently driving a leon cura 290 st would be good to see how they compare 😀
I really would be honoured to have the chance to win the giveaway as I haven’t won anything off UA-cam or anything from online so it would be a first time. Like they say it’s a first time for everything
The stock M140i looks a bit poo; the rear diffuser is so bad. Mine was changed pretty quickly. The facelift MINI rear lights with the Union Jack design are utter gash. They’re a lot of fun though.
Not sure you can compare the power of a 140 to that of a JCW. As they say there is no replacement for displacement. Of course a 6 cylinder is going to achieve more power with less mods, but as you say it's about the abilities, we don't live in the US, so while straight line speed is great, if it sh*ts itself in a corner then it's really only a 1 trick pony. I still think the JCW is the original and best B road blaster out there. The mods to gain 300 bhp are simple and easy enough to fit, then you have a pretty epically fast car that gives you a lot of confidence. 100% with you on the Cooper with "JCW pack" vs a proper JCW, my neighbour has a 1.5 cooper with a JCW pack in the same colour, side by side there's not a lot of difference to see, they should have given the JCW something else to set it apart. Next time make sure you end the video with a JCW Pro Exhaust video ;) Much nicer :)
I’ve just swapped my 370Z for a JCW. Really came down to fuel as the main reason but have to admit, as much as I miss the 370, the mini drives much better
I love My M140i, but i wouldn't even consider the Mini. Not only is it ugly (IMO) I don't consider BMW 4 cylinder engines to be all that great. I would take a Mk7 golf GTi instead.
Good video actually watch this one all way through m140i I deffo better than mini like. I like the design of the m140i. Entertaining content for once kept me engaged for full video 👍
Pretty neutral video, I personally think the Mini is a more usable car in theN roads.. driven a 450 m140i and its pretty safe to say you can't use all that power unless you wanna die. I wouldn't necessarily say the Minis are overpriced, but for the money, you can get a hot hatch of the equivalent size for considerably less. On the other hand it's probably the 3rd best "compact" hot hatch I've driven, behind the i20n and GR Yaris and its by far the cheapest out of those 3.
@@lookship Pretty sure a brand new I20n is considerably cheaper than a brand new JCW once extras are added? Also the GR Yaris is a step above both so probably warrants the extra cost. I just don't get the appeal of a Mini, if I was looking at slightly older hot hatches it would be a Fiesta St or a Clio RS over a Mini. Just my opinion though, the main thing is that you love yours. 👍👍
I have a JCW with the arm rest, one thing you might not know is when you lower it till it locks in place, you can actually push the button in to raise it to lower it even further so it's sloped down at an angle. Makes it much easier imo if you want an arm rest and still be able to change gears!

Yes i figured that out the other day too😂
Felt good to be back in an M140i, even if it was just to film a few clips. Maybe one day I'll be back in a Bimmer 🇩🇪
You are still in one 😅
It's a blessing and a curse! I didn't think I was "bothered" by build quality until I looked at JDM 😅

@Adam get what you pay for I suppose. Massive difference between this and the MK7 ST I had.
My first Mini was a 2017 F56 S with the JCW Pro Tuning kit & exhaust. It was great. For whatever reason I decided to trade it and tried a few other cars. Interesting, I was and still am a big Mini fan but in terms of driving enjoyment nothing comes close to an ND2 Miata
The 8-speed gearbox in the Mini from MY18 onwards is from Aisin as well as the 6-speed before MY18. The ZF 8-speed is longitudinal only.
Who needs a kitchen when you can cook on a b58 after doing burnouts 😏
Can cook on a B58 just ticking over. Thing gets HOT.
Give me the prize.
I've driven both, and the rwd m140i is always going to be the winner for me. Great video, I'm glad I stumbled across it. 👍🏻
Mini JCW LCi does not have ZF8 as stated in video but Aisin AWF8F35 gearbox (also 8 speed)
My bad 😅

Watched all your videos why looking to buy a M140i, got it back in November and I love it, came from a S3
Enjoying my mini cooper s! Looking for a remap soon though
Just picked up a F57 JCW 6spd auto. Really good tbh, happy to offer up as a comparison!
I don’t think the 8 speeder is a ZF box. It’s an 8 speed Aisin box. ZF ones can only be fit longitudinal if I remember correctly

Great video, recently found your channel after purchasing my first BMW, an F20 M Sport which I absolutely love! Keep up the good work 💪
You read my mind when I saw this video come up. Mini or M140. Thanks for helping out filling my brain with information!

M140i has had me eyeing it for a while now. I think I’d prefer it
Quality concise video! Nice to see some of my local roads too. I’d have to choose m140, mini interior just doesn’t do it for me.
I've driven a M140i and my girlfriend has a JCW. I must say i have more fun with the JCW then the M140i the handling of the JCW is superb imo.
Great video. My M140i went and replaced it with a Cooper S, with a lot of JCW kit on it 😂. Mine was for a porch extension 😕 Still miss it.

You should check out Mulgari to see what is capable in modifications for the F56. The ICON 2 is a beast.

Loved all your M140i content, but shortly after you sold yours, I managed to cop one myself. Anywho, great comparison.

Interesting....
Thank you for the video! Was quite surprised as well :D

Owned a stage 2 F56 JCW for over a year and the thing was absolutely hilarious to drive, blew a45s and similar hatches away on corners and straights.
What mods do you run/recommend? 🤔

I thought the ZF gearbox could only go in RWD based cars?
They're fitted to a lot of 4wd vehicles too. The ineos grenadier is probably the latest one to use it.

What can you get stage 1 out of the JCW?
From what I've seen around 300bhp
Why do you say the run flat tyres are terrible?
Noisy. Grip levels are nowhere near a PS4 or PS5. Expensive to replace.
I would have to agree on the interior, i think the m140is look so boring inside, mini is so much more sporty/ less bland
Love my m140 but it's definitely going to get me banned! 😂
We can't get those bimers in the states 😢
Sad times 🥲
The speedo in the centre of the dash must take some getting used to 👀
It's behind the wheel like a "normal" car on the F56. Previous gen had it in the centre, which must have been hard to get used to.
