    I don’t know, you’re videos just blow me away! Your farm is immaculate. Your family lovely and precious. I cannot imagine the hard work you’ve all put into this. I am inspired to the max. I am hoping to raise our own food for our family of 7. I would love for that to expand. We are on nearly 2 acres, 1 of which is not covered in forest or river or steep hill. I am praying for God to show me how to be fruitful with what He has so generously given us. Your videos and example sure helps. Bless you from Nova Scotia

      Hey Heidi. Thank you so much for your kind words! They're much appreciated. All I can say is this: anyone can do this. With a bit of planning, hard work and dedication you'll be able to grow most of the food for your family. One step at a time! If you ever have any specific questions you know where to find me. Good luck!

    Beauty is not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of a market garden, not when efficiency is the top priority. I don’t think however, that I’ve seen a more beautiful one. It must make the hard work a little more pleasant, especially while being serenaded with bird song.

    Hello from WV, USA. You're farm is amazing. I noticed the trees you left growing within your beds. How much does it help to keep the lettuce from bolting? Great video..

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  4 роки тому +9

      Hey there! Thank you for the kind words. It helps in many ways. Just like you mentioned, in the heat of summer we can safely grow 'spring'-type crops like lettuces, radishes etc. without them bolting too quickly. (of course we still choose cultivars that can handle the heat better than others). But we've seen a reduction in irrigation need. Increased biodiversity. Protection from harsh elements including the sun, rain, wind, hail etc. We can work throughout the summer in the dappled shade without ever having the feeling we're going to faint of the heat. and a lot more benefits! Having said that, in early spring and autumn it does take the crops in some places under the trees a bit longer compared to the same crops in full sun. So it's not all positive. It also takes a bit more work in autumn to clean up the beds (after all trees shed their leaves). It might take a little longer to clean salad mixes grown under the trees in autumn. Anyways, the pros far outweigh the cons for us! Hope that helps.

    I "see" the future of organic gardening with the help from the automation(including for small greenhouses), low power electric tools including walk behind battery electric tractors(see Tesla) and electric wheelbarrow. Machines(of course, electric) holding workers in prone position(let's name it MPP) to prevent back pain.
    No paths, but rails(each 3 meter separated, maybe) - the whole surface being used. Easy and efficient for the e-wheelbarrow and MPP to access the whole surface, no matter if it's muddy, raining or whatever. From the rails' base could be attached the tarps or the half-rings of the low(or high!) polytunnel - no need for rocks, sand bags.
    Of course, the questions are about the costs but also about how much they can improve the productivity and thus if they can be cost effective mid-term.

I've been looking into this but haven't been able to determine if it is possible to get wood chips for free or low-cost from tree cutting services or municipalities (as is common in the US). Or did you have to purchase? Thanks again!

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  4 роки тому

      Hey Walker S. We have a local tree cutting service in the area where we can source it for free. We can also let them deliver it at delivery cost. Otherwise there's also companies we can buy it from, but obviously we prefer the free one;). It took us quite a while to find a free source as there's not many of them available here in our area. Most wood chips are now being used for a newer wood stove system that runs on wood chips, so it's getting more difficult to source this for free!
