Disney hasn't been where creativity happens for at least a generation. If you look at it, every success they've had in terms of producing successful entertainment content has been a result of an aquisition, and happens to be the thing that came out before Disney inevitably squeezed it until it died.
Agreed, Disney arguably didn't create successful entertainment content over the past few years - they've acquired highly acclaimed companies like Lucasfilm and Marvel, and been able to package them into something deeper and more evolved than what had come before. As long as they continue filling their stable with high calibre, innovative entertainment content, they'll be fine. Awn7mFktpB4
I might argue that they’re being TOO honest. A lot of good stuff or advice here, but I can’t help but feel that he just revealed some of his own “trade secrets”.
@@Dr.Meme-ManI personally compare the “trade secrets” to VTubers: Yes, we know anime isn’t real and we know that these aren’t real people, they’re just putting on an act to make money. But that doesn’t matter and I don’t care. They make money and I get entertainment. Everybody wins and gets what they want.
@@djshy3 no what I mean is that they’re called “trade secrets” for a reason. You keep them close to your chest; allowing you to stay ahead of the competition. If EVERYONE starts doing the trade secrets, then it’s no longer viable and you lose a ton of money and resources in the process
@@Dr.Meme-Man Considering the “trade secrets” in question, I legitimately can’t see how that’s possible, outside of other theory channels (which, who?) producing better quality content to compete with the same formula. And even then, we’re watching Game/Film Theory. I don’t think MatPat is in too much danger here.
@Dr.Meme-Man Not really. You do realize that Matpat is already a massive part in UA-cam. He is pretty much secured there as long as he keeps up his work ethic. Besides the "secrets" that he is sharing are pretty well known, especially for those looking to make a career out of YT. Heck, I heard of a lot of "secrets" and I don't even care to make a career out of YT.
Honestly I am ok with Disney going down. They don’t care about their employees. They’re just about money. They literally sue people for using the Disney font even if the words written don’t say Disney. That happened to one of my moms friends, she’s a wedding photographer and her client loved Disney, so the photographer hand wrote a banner that said something along the lines of Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. last name. She ended up posting some of the photos on Facebook, and around a month later she was contacted by someone from Disney saying that they would sue her for using their font even though it didn’t say Disney on it or even mention anything Disney related with it. I don’t think she actually ended up getting sued, but the people at Disney were completely willing to go through with it. Anyway, I think Disney needs to get a wake up call and get their egos in check because their entire business has been going down hill for many many years now.
It's sad to see how corrupt they are, but god is a wakeup call needed. They're terrible over there and need a taste of their own medicine when it comes to that pride, and I can't believe how sensitive they are over someone writing with their font. It's not being stolen or used poorly, no one needs to get sued over something so small like that. Some of the people there really need to grow up if even the audience has more sense than they do
The only sad thing about Disney going downhill is that tons of people are losing their jobs. And I'm not talking about upper class pricks, I'm talking about the poor animators, story writers, and editors that are being forced to rush out movies that they want to spend more time and care on.
I recently watched Aristocats (my favorite Disney movie) and forgot how PASSIONATE and beautiful Disney used to be! Even though the art style was “messy” or “sketchy”, it added much more charm and character to the film! It wasn’t just a movie to watch, it was literal ART being hand drawn frame by frame, which makes you appreciate the film even more! Everyone was unique because they HAD to be (since it was hand drawn), as opposed to the same 3D face model being used over and over again and just switching out hair or eye color. Old Disney for the win
The release sequence wouldn't have changed anything. There are just too many bad ones storywise and people are getting tired of the woke nonsense on top of that. Even the better ones are very superficial light entertainment. They are nothing in comparison to the cultural phenomenons which Disney's movies once were. Also they should never have closed their 2D department. It's a shame that they let true art die. 3D is nice but not true art like hand drawn things are.
@@EbonyPopeI’d argue that 3D digital animation is true art. Why? It also takes both time and skill to perfect (though a very different skillset than 2D hand drawn animation) and its artists can still creatively solve their issues. Think how “Monsters Inc.” needed convincing fur for characters like Sullivan, so the Pixar’s animation team developed state-of-the-art simulation technology to compensate.
The budget for Everything Everywhere All At Once was only $25M, yet it was an Oscar winning masterpiece. There wasn't a crazy amount of CGI in that movie because a lot of the scenes were done with practical effects, which can make it feel more authentic and genuine.
The "practical effects make it feel more authentic and genuine" thing is bullshit. You just need to look at a bunch of old movies at the height of the practical effects era to see it's not true. It only seems this way because audiences literally never notice the good cgi (and sometimes studios outright lie about nit using cgi). The reason EEAAO managed so much on such a relatively small budget is because they were smart about it, picking the best tool for the job and tying some effects that would otherwise be pretty lame into the story and so elevating them (see: when a guy's head blows up into a confetti. In isolation it's a pretty lame effect. In the movie it's awesome because it shows just how unhinged the character who makes it happen is.)
I used to be sad when a channel I like wasn’t posting much, but now that I’m older, I’m learning to respect the process more. This video also helped boost that respect👍
same! and the fact that when a release happens its like a big moment to be hype for. i watched this animator who was really good, they mostly made animatics (no colours and the lines are sketchy), but each one had hundreds of thousands and maybe millions of views. before, i used to think about why they don't upload much because i enjoyed watching their videos... but now that i actually do animating on my channel (not nearly as much or as good), i realise just how much effort it takes. i mean i did a looped animation and even that took a long time. and working on one right now, the problem being that i dont have the motivation and im putting it aside..basically...artblock.
To be fair, an Inside Out 2 could actually really work, with Riley getting older and everything, but I don't really have faith in modern Disney to make it actually good. Edit: They did it. Somehow. Against all odds. They did it.
@@p1xelz323 Yes but it was made by Disney when they could still make good movies. Nowadays, they're even more concerned about getting the moves out quicker to make more money. I just don't think they'll give Inside Out 2 enough time for the writer to make an actually good and compelling story.
Well the main issue the move wont work is because wokeness and politics that movie will flop than flip since a dozen films and tv shows are following the wokeness and politics which is why so many Disney films keeps getting worse in each year.
Another thing that would really help Disney is bringing back classic hand drawn animation. Sure it’s costly but to me it’s what made Disney Disney. That’s where the magic was
I just can't believe they spent hundreds of millions on strange world only to pretend it doesn't exist. No one I know has heard about it, and normally disney films are shoved down your face.
As someone in the industry, a big part of the problem is that there a very few people as precise, passionate and knowledgeable about 2D animation these days. The early days of Disney were passion projects but unfortunately modern society doesn’t give anyone enough space or financial freedom to invest their time and effort into their passions anymore. People need to be making enough money to live and are too drained from stress to even consider passion projects on the side.
Fun fact it's only more costly than 3d animation because 2d is unionized. 3d animation isn't any easier for them to make so they would benefit from doing some 2d animation now and again
I read online from someone who works in Disney animation that they can't even go back to hand drawn anymore, primarily because they don't even have the equipment there. After the box office failure of Princess and the frog, Disney stopped prioritising it, so it stopped being used. Now it's quite literally gone altogether
Can you imagine. What would actually happen if Disney managed to go bankrupt? If they had to sell their brands and companies, who would buy them and how would it work out?
There's been a rumor that Apple wants to buy Disney for a few years now Edit to add: It might sound wrong, but Apple is a bigger company than Disney. By market cap, Apple is the largest company in the world (not by total assets). Think of all the people worldwide who have an Apple device in their pocket or on their person at all times. Apple also has knowledge of each person's media habits in a way Disney does not. Apple knows exactly how many hours you watch any streaming service on one of their devices, and probably also knows what you're watching too. Disney only knows how much Disney you watch. Big tech + big media would be an unstoppable juggernaut.

They lost sight of their journey. Walt Disney once said, “We do not make movies to make money. We make money so we can make more movies.” Disney was corrupted by greed.
Honestly the problem with Disney is they keep canceling the shows people like most, the owl house was loved by many people but they canceled because "it didn’t fit the Disney brand" and then they replace it with something they think is better like horrible reboots of old beloved shows.
That's probably because they're not selling any merchandise associated with those shows. Money is literally how corporations can tell if you guys like their work. If you like their shows but you don't support them financially, it means that show fail. This is what I think because cartoons network cancelled a show I like for this reason
@@imienazwisko6150 that's probably because it's cheaper to make a shirt with an image of beloved characters than to make a toy out of them. i forgot to mention that corporations like to save money too
The problem is Disney isn't trying to produce content they think you'll like. They're producing content and telling you to like it and if you don't they don't think it's their fault.
The problem is they're shoving a bunch of morals into the stories that orignally were for entertainment. Watching disney now is like watching a communist propoganda TV show.
My grandmother wanted to see the indiana jones movie in theaters, and we were the only people there for the showing. When it was finished, no employee was there to open the door. The mall was closed, and because grandma is in a wheelchair we had to walk around in the darkness of the mall to exit, on top of being let down from the movie. It made us sad.
It's incredible to me that we are now in a reality where small media companies on UA-cam have demonstrably better release strategies and creative processes than billion dollar industry titans. Keep up the fantastic work everyone!
MattPat is a bit different, he learned all about metrics when he worked at Defy Media. He then educated all of the bigwigs on UA-cam, like Pewds, like Jackcepticeye, like Markiplier and so many others. When he started consulting privately after leaving defy that's what he did he taught them about the metrics, and how to use them. He and Stephanie used to go to Vidcon and I saw this seminar they did, packed with a thousand creators and they're going over the optimal video length, best times to stream, optimal video length for FaceBook pages, so forth and so on. They tested all sorts of stuff
That’s really the usual. Those titans can’t really reorient themselves fast so when the tide turns they are caught with their pants down. It used to be that the massive CGI filed, EGS and China friendly blockbuster was a guaranteed success, but now the market has changed and audiences want something else, but Disney and WB have fifteen projects down the pipeline that they can’t cancel and it will take years for them to adjust. The far smaller (still gigantic but ya know) Universal and Paramount will be running circles around Disney/WB or even replace them.
Most of what I see on the homepage is people making fake faces to other creators' (actual) efforts or a guy in his basement wearing a suit pretending to be a news anchor while reading another website's article. That or 1000 people ripping off Mr. Beast, so "creative" is a pretty funny word to describe it.
It’s always so refreshing and nice to hear how much the theorists actually care about pleasing the audience and making quality content for us to enjoy. They truly care about their fans and their interest and every time I hear Matt explain the science and why it brings me happiness cause it reminds me that even though I’ve been a fan of this channel since the beginning, nothing had changed unlike all other channels I watched as a kid. Thank you MatPat ❤️
How in the world did Puss and Boots: The Last Wish, the best animated movie I’ve seen in many years, cost half of the animated crap that Disney has put out in the last few years? Disney’s mismanagement is astounding.
Because it's apart of a amazing world of shrek. Not only that but DreamWorks prob put all there energy on puss in boots movie and absolutely flopped elemental
Another problem with Disney: They hate things that actually work. For example: The Owl House was actually doing super well, and had a MASSIVE fan-base. Then, Disney cancelled it because “it didn’t fit the brand”. The final season did INCREDIBLY well, and it trended on TikTok and Twitter. Disney realized they were wrong, they admitted it, and lost more money. And that’s just ANOTHER problem with Disney…☹
Technically speaking they need to work merchandise into bigger projects like animated shows. However, they don't seem to know how to launch and manage merch lines that aren't aimed a small children so they struggle to support such franchises. This isn't even a Disney specific problem and is why you don't see many long form cartoons succeed.
"A Marvel release used to feel like an event - like you had to be there. Nowadays, though, it's quite literally a weekly occurrence" I think that quote sums up my (and a lot of other people's) feelings about the MCU at this point.
In discussing Disney's reshoot issues, and Mat's comments about the senior creative team needing to be on the same page, I was reminded of the ongoing writer's strike. One of the major complaints the WGA had was that the big studios are trying to cut them out of the production process as much as possible. Historically the writers of a film or television episode have been involved with the shooting and editing process to coordinate any changes that need to be made to the story during the filmmaking process. It would honestly be poetic if by trying to shortchange the writers led to companies like Disney actually losing money from the cost of expensive reshoots, and lost revenue from inferior writing.
@@Madison-iw8ix If you hire good writers, trust that they know what they're doing and establish a good feedback dialogue with them, the result will be good. However, if you treat them like a disconnected idea machine that spits out story fragments for executives to mix and match at random, the result will be crap. You can't blame the writers for all the things that needlessly interfere with the writing process, or for being handed a stupid base premise.
@@werealldoomed7643Except for the fact that they haven’t been given a fucking livable wage or, as the original comment said, haven’t been allowed to be a part of production. If they were allowed to be a part of production- as they used to be- they’d be able to change bits of the story that doesn’t work as well as they’d originally planned. If they can barely survive on what the studios pay them, then their work is obviously going to be affected. And as for people ‘not caring that they’re on strike’, the majority of the general public actually sympathizes towards the strikers.
At this point, the biggest problem is just the quality control. Multiverse of Madness was supposed to be a big reveal of the multiverse and we all saw how that turned out. frankly it looks like disney is trying to plan out content, but has had so many flops they are just in a horrible position.
IKR? I see the "Phase" maps of Marvel movies going forward so many years and I can't help but think "Do they really think they're all gonna be successful over this long amount of time? Or is it all gonna quickly fizzle out?"
another huge issue is pirating. no one punishes it anymore and people just do it left and right, which really sucks to see because some of these films deserve better
@@quartzz7616I don't know if I believe that piracy is as huge an issue as people say. You ever watch a pirated film that still in the theater. Sure they look loads better nowadays than they did twenty years ago, but, they still look like crap compared to seeing it in a theater or even compared to a home release on DVD. But regardless, Most people who want to watch these will go out an actually watch them. heck, they'll buy the DVD's just to support it. The same thing applies to Video Games. A shockingly few number of people who pirate do so without the intention of acquiring a legal copy and usually for reasons other than just money.
The transparency of the inner workings of this channel is amazing. While other people try to hide strategies, it builds so much community trust that you're comfortable sharing your strategies. Mad respect
In general none of the transparency affects the viewer. It’s likely there’s also meetings about just how much merch advertising a viewer will handle before clicking away from the video. That sort of transparency would be a bad idea as they said in the video, Disney shouldn’t be letting the viewers know how they are being manipulated.
the open nature of how mat runs his business model, and his obvious in depth knowledge of the system and how it moves is really endearing. years of being a business analyst and he has no desire to hide anything from the public for profit. genuine guy.
Something you've missed is that Disney (and really all major conglomerates) have so completely lost touch with reality they honestly don't know what will and will not work. The people who made The Little Mermaid and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny honestly thought fans were going to LOVE what they had done. Disney isn't failing because they can't business good (though they can't) Disney is failing because the honestly don't care what the market wants, they're going to do it anyways.
I agree. But at the same time they made Frozen and Encanto which were amazing and successful as far as I know. So they CAN still make great things...they just aren't. The fact it costs them less money to make animated movies makes their decisions even more confusing.
I looked up Encanto and saw that it pulled $257 million worldwide against a $150 million estimated production budget. While that is successful in a way compared to Disney's most recent efforts, it's almost guaranteed the film didn't return a profit after considering marketing and distribution costs. A 2021 release would have certainly affected ticket sales, of course. Frozen is now so old that it doesn't really reflect the kind of products modern Disney is capable of making. It might as well be from another company at this point. For reference, Frozen's production budget was reported to be $150 million and its worldwide gross was $1,285 million. And that wouldn't count merchandising and branding tie-ins of course.
@@dycedargselderbrother5353 Yes Encanto may have not preformed very great in the box office, but that doesn't include DVD and merchandise sails or streaming. Which is where kids IP really makes it's money. Parents are not going to take their kids to the movie theater multiple times to see the same movie, but when they buy the DVD or it's on Disney+ your kids will watch it 6 times a day, and they are going to want the toys, clothes, books, gogurt, happy meals, cookies, ect. As a father of a little girl I can assure you of that. That is all profits that Disney sees but are not calculated in box office or review scores. Just look at the kids shows we loved when we were kids they were all made to sell toys, and most of the biggest ones are still around now. Still pumping out new movies, games, shows, and of course toys. Also they don't have to share much if any of the profits from toy sails with anyone.
@@AudraAuclair Those were original ideas which are sadly very few. They keep just race and gender swapping old IPs and crapping on the fans. Frozen is old, 2 is ok. I have not seen Encanto but I hear it's pretty good. They don't listen to their fans. They are going to be gone soon.
It’s so frustrating that Disney won’t pick up the new and interesting stories that creators and writers give them. If you look into older writers and story artists from Disney, they have put out amazing stories that Disney has turned down in favor of live action remakes. These artists are starting to move to Netflix and UA-cam to get their stories told. If Disney actually decided to pick up and listen to their artists, they might regain their footing
@@lexigotsashow will they realize we are tired if we keep watching the remakes? I have stayed far away from the live-action remakes, and yet every remake seems to break records AND underperform at the same time. I heard that the little mermaid was the biggest box office they had in years or smth, but it is still underperforming? Sounds like a tax dodge to me
It kind of feels like Disney is being run by old man who have too much to lose. Only safe projects with safe, tried and true, market researched programs. So you get Obi Wan - a grizzled old man who has lost his spark, who meets a sassy little girl who helps him rediscover himself. The Star Wars movies that were just careful retreads of what works. Low risk, big investment. It's like they use stockbroker knowledge on movies? Pour 300 mill into Indie, you'll get 3 billion back. Cos that's how investing works... right?
Seeing Disney, the company/creator of both our childhoods and adulthoods, destroy itself is both depressing and saddening but utterly satisfying at the same time.
I really don’t see how a company that made lots of great movies and shows in the past falling down is considering “satisfying”. This is downright depressing.
@RunwayIsAwesome because of how terrible of a company they've become, how alienating of their audiences they are. We dont have rose colored glasses on. It's satisfying to FINALLY see others now understand what everyone has been saying
Its so sad to watch Disney slowly die. The old disney movies used to be exciting to watch a new disney movie but now a new one comes out every 2 months.
Disney is like many old empires, they expand to a point on ‘invincibility’ in their eyes, content with just doing the bare minimum to keep control and profits up, but after a period of failures due to this mentality and lack of quality/care, they start to fall apart as people rebel or (in Disney’s case) simply losing interest.
Another problem with a Disney and Netflix is they'll put out a great series only to cancel before series 2 gets the greenlight. Give people a chance to find the series for a year or two and THEN decide what to do. (I was really looking forward to the Dark Crystal series 😭)
At least netflix tried merching and making dvd sets of their series that they made... the stiff disney has been churning out recently, if it is a rare jewel, odds are it won't make it to an offline platform like dvd or blu ray
Mhm :,)) shows like owl house that could do AMAZING things if Disney just let it run, but they freak out when it’s not another bland marvel Tv show that they don’t care about… Film is art and should be about taking risks…makes me sad they’re so desperate they don’t do that anymore
I’m just waiting on Dragon Prince’s cancellation. I don’t want it to happen but at the rate they’re going it’s going to be gone before the end of the year.

So, i actually saw rhe Haunted Mansion movie in theaters, and i actually REALLY enjoyed it. For me personally, it hit me in the feels, and even though it wasn't really an escape from reality, it was still fun, thrilling, and hit me in the feels. I really liked the movie-
Having insane budgets is a major part of the problem. Disney has ballooned budgets to the point of absurdity, where every film has to be a major hit to break even. Haunted Mansion is a great example of a film that could have been profitable (if it was released in October with a proper marketing push) if it was cost controlled.
Disney just needs to actually LISTEN to the millions of people telling them what they don't want to see. Stop changing the old stories we love and instead create NEW stories that we can fall in love with. ☺️
Hollywood as a whole with rare exception does not take risks on original stories anymore - it has become financially advantageous to green light only things with established IPs
Speaking of strange pacing decisions and also being scared to try new things reminds me of what Disney did to The Owl House. That's probably some of the best content they've made since the pandemic and they were too afraid to let it run it's whole course. That said, the whole Owl House team really did a smashing job finishing it out. You can tell how rushed the pacing of season 3 is, but it's still so good.
Reminds me of how rushed the new Duck Tales was at the end too. Or how rushed Gravity Falls was at the end. What's the deal with Disney ALWAYS horribly rushing their few good series? The early, relatively bland episodes get upwards of too much time, if anything, but then the ending where I'm fully invested and want to enjoy every possible second is where things rush way too fast.
@@Alloveckgravity falls was not rushed. The weirdmageddon trillogy was the intended ending, I’m not saying it didn’t feel a bit rushed tho, A LOT happened in those three episodes.
TBH I didn't think it feels rushed amphibia finale feels more rushed even though it designed for three seasons (I'm not talking about the ending or it's themes.)
I loved that show. I came upon it right as the third season was starting. I was pretty disappointed with the three episode final season, even though I found it pretty awesome. it just felt so abrupt, so sudden, so rushed. Like the payoff was a fraction of the buildup. Then I heard the backstory and was amazed they put out such a solid, powerful resolution in only 3 episodes when they clearly had so much planned that they needed/wanted to resolve.
Wow, I didn’t know these videos take that much money, time, and effort to make. I thought it was just you write a script, voice the script, somebody else edits it, and it gets uploaded. I now have a much greater appreciation for these videos coming out. And probably for any UA-cam video made!
I remember watching a video from Schaffrillas Productions about the "Making Of" series on Frozen 2. He commented on how the movie had to be pushed through production without a clear plan and how it explained a lot of the movie's issues. Years later, it seems that was a microcosm for all of Disney - they pawned off creative vision for easy money, and now they're paying the price.
I watched that documentary because of that video and schaffrillas was not kidding, they were trying really hard to smile through the fact that approaching the deadline people had to wake up at 3AM to get to work. It was so bad but they were trying to smile to the camera as a majority of things that people had spent years working on ended up being cut 9 months before the premiere.
Speaking as a engineer, one of the biggest things I had drilled into me was that project requirements (which seems very much like those scripts Matt is talking about) needed to be agreed upon by all the important people before you start a project because errors in requirements are the mostly costly and time consuming errors that can occur any where in the project. More so than during production, more so than during deployment. As such it horrifies and amazes me to hear just so much and how regularly Disney is doing these rewrites essentially, cause that means they totally messed up their project requirements
Disney is very much just guerrilla making. They are designing stuff and 3D printing it. Then they are observing the final product and then redesign and print. There is no proper planning being used to save costs. I'm an engineer too as well as a filmmaker and that was one of the biggest things that both fields need to understand. Project Management is everything! Disney lacks a project planner to keep track of costs whilr making quality stuff without having to go back to the drawing board.
Consultant companies don't even give advice, all they actually do is gather the internal data of the company, look at what is going right and provide the upper management with a report for them to justify any kind of decision they want to make and if they fail they simply fall back to: "we took the decision with the best information available which unfortunately didn't turn into what we expected" and just get a life line out of it
Most of what I heard was "Disney lost their magic while giving unrealistic expectations in real life" They kept making movies more realistic while making dozens of movies/series within a year, a very unrealistic expectation without overworking everyone.
Quantity over quality, bad writing, bad planning, politics, remaking every successful cartoon to real life while losing the magic of original, repeatedly throwing money at a production does not make it good....
I won't mind Frozen 3, when Elsa finally wakes up from her dream state of being the so called "force of nature" crap, returns as Queen of Arendelle, steals Kristoff marries him and exiles Anna to the enchanted forest problem solved for frozen 3
I pin the blame on how the Disney brand was widely mocked back when they were still making larger-than-life content. Dreamworks’ “Shrek” took a really cynical approach to their stories and its popularity pretty much cemented itself in how movies are made today. When that old spell is lost, what can you expect to do but join the club?
@@geoffreyrichards6079 What Disney should've done was be original. Shrek worked as well as it did because it was original in almost everything in did while still being a great story. Even if it had cynical elements, it still finished with some unrealistic magic (Donkey seducing the dragon was the only reason that rescue attempt wasn't a bad end)
@@lunarshadow5584the main thing about shrek with how it did it's satire was that it was a part of the story in a way you wouldn't have to know it was satire
I think one thing that Disney has really forgotten is what made them famous. Most of their original movies weren't their stories, but were heartfelt films based on classic fairytales
Now they're making soulless remakes of those tales and racebending them to give minorities hand me downs because it's too hard to make something based off an African folktale.
I think that another huge problem that Disney has is how they market their original stories. Most people who saw Elemental enjoyed the movie, but I know that the reason most didn’t go to see it in theaters (me included) was because a lot of the marketing for the movie centered around an annoying 'comedic' character. When you watch the movie, that character is in 3, maybe 4, scenes and speaks very little but his face was EVERYWHERE in the marketing. So people were like 'This annoying character is going to be in a lot of the movie, so I'm not gonna see it.' The same is going on rn with their newest original IP 'Wish'. The main marketing for it that I've seen has been the villain's song which most people don't like, but I've heard absolutely nothing else about it. I have no idea what the movie is about, even when looking on Wikipedia or Google.
It’s so sad, because there are SO many amazing stories waiting to be told, but they’re so focused on the “safe” and “mainstream-liked” projects, that they are exhausting everyone. Balance between new content and continue actions is SO important. I feel like Netflix has the opposite problem because they just keep starting and cancelling excellent shows because they want to keep it “fresh” but now people are loosing faith in shows ever being finished, which in turn puts people off.
If anything, they need to stay on the safe lane for now. Doctor Strange is a flop and Guardians is a banger? I don't think Disney has a room for more experimental content for now to revive the company.
@@spaceboyctstudios2934 There's a few 'cancelled disney movies' videos you can watch about several new and/or original movies (some were sequels) that were already in production and got scrapped. Personally I thought the movie 'Gigantic' seemed really fun and interesting. Of course there are also ideas being constantly suggested that will never see the light of day. I would much rather see that than any of the live-action remakes. I will acknowledge some of the remakes have been good and did something new with them like they did with Maleficent. However the majority is just Disney trying to cash in some easy money using their popular names and the nostalgia associated with them and completely butchering the stories and characters arcs of said movies.
@@dika_hilmanThe problem is they've been on the safe lane for too long. You can do something experimental *Without* burning a million bucks on it. Take a small group of your animators, take some storyboarders, and tell them "We need concepts and ideas, throw us some spitballs and we'll greenlight the ones the team likes most - within reason." Now, let this 'indie disney' brand develop with that team getting a specific name, so that audiences who pick up on what they put out have the ability to hype a project up if the team ends up doing well. Do this for a few different writers where they basically get free reign to create their passions though on a slightly limited budget, and you'll have yourself some new experimental 'unique' content that hardly cost you a dime. AND your artists are happy, because they got a no strings attached opportunity to write passion projects they've had on the backburner for decades.
I’m really both mad and sad at Disney for the way their content has happened. I was so hopeful for phase 4 and the Star Wars sequels. But now I wish I could see something new and good
I wouldn't mind Disney dying at all. Like you mentioned in your examples with Star Wars, Disney has completely ruined the characteristics of some of my childhood heroes with the new films. It would be sweet revenge if they keep on failing. That way, I hope they will become an example for other studios.
Nah what we need is disney get to the point where they are losing so much money that they will have to sell lucusfilm or marvel i would love if sony owned all of marvel since they can actually make films and anyone could do a better job of SW than Disney
This might be controversial, but I admire how the Theory team has always (even in the way early days) been upfront and transparent with its community. A lot of brands /say/ they're transparent, but really they're just showing "bloopers" and a tiny tip of the iceberg to give off an impression. Mat's always been upfront about all the work that goes into running all five channels, while respecting his company, his employees, and his family. Honestly, I think more and more people are leaning towards that style of open communication and trusting more indie brands that show the nitty gritty truth about reality. I wish more brands saw that and leaned into it, rather than doubling down on keeping everything wrapped up tight.
I couldn't agree more. It's what makes Mat and all his Theory series so human to me. So many companies want to act like everything they make was made in a vacuum, and many UA-camrs care nothing for their fans. And seeing Mat be neither of those things is what I call a huge breath of fresh air.
I remember growing up when a Disney movie coming out was a big event and there was so much excitement surrounding it. They would have these specials about how the story came together, interviews with the actors, writers, director, etc. and how the artists would go to locations around the world that they pulled inspiration from. It was always clear to see form those how much work and care every part of the movie had behind it. They would always leave me super excited to go see the movie.
Look at how they treat writers and actors as if they are completely replaceable. Talent and Gift are not replaceable but management is. That’s why they’re striking. To protect their livelihood, their art and their hard work. It’s pretty obvious that when management “makes” a movie, it’s not very good because they go off a trend and a formula. “Art for the sake of Art” doesn’t always make huge amounts of money but it can make stories that touch and inspire. Feelings coming through an actor’s eyes and voice that bring us to tears and laughter.
@@bosnianlady10 Do they? I have been a pretty heavy watcher of Disney channel for a long time and it seems like I haven't seen anything like those for a long time. I guess there are the really short things that come up in the commercial breaks with a few short interviews or playing a song from the movie while clips from it play but those are definitely not on the same level.
@@mavortius8768 They have all of it, more of it then ever, just spread out on different mediums. People nowadays watch so much on so many platforms, unlike before where we got most of from one platform, concentrated on few avenues.
If Team Theorist ever decided to tell a story themselves, I'd 100% be down for it. The narratively interpreted FNAF timeline is a wonderful example of how Team Theorist can tell a story they're passionate about, and I'd love to see them try and tell an original story. If the big companies can't do, why not show them how it's done?
I’m now realizing how well your strategy works! I actually keep an eye on each channel and expect a video on a topic I will like to come after one or two video topics I’m not that into.
Larger brands such as Disney and Netflix tend to hide the business side as best they can, MatPat does the opposite and it is amazing! By being transparent about the business side of content creation his audience trusts him more and he helps others in the creative space. It’s like if game consoles never attempted to stop modding on their devices, the community has more opportunity to work together and build both internally and out. This is why I love the theorists
Lol Disney is LAUNDERING money. There’s no way they used 350 million wisely on each film that had one the worse CGI to ever disgrace the cinema. They probably made this mess to invoke a writers strike and usher in AI since they’re in such a bad state of monetary affairs.
I am still upset that Disney bought and killed one of the most innovative company out there, Pixar. Up until they got bought by Disney, Pixar has bigger release than the previous movies for ALL the movies they released up to that point which is unheard of when you released both new IP and sequels. Pixar made it to a point that they won't do a sequel unless they have a new story to tell, such as Toy Story.
I love how matpat used his own channel and brought attention to how they on purpose boost other videos by putting ones they knew would do good between ones they werent sure of instead of just denying stuff like disney would or other film studios i like how open he is about the channel with all of us
And MatPat is great because many people just throw biased hate, whereas he laid down hard facts, or rather theories. No one can accuse him of being misogynistic or anything like that because he doesn't even go there, just brilliant strategic thinking on why, with theories that are hard to refute.
@@4lackofbetter yeah, ive seen haters be like "he fell off" and his videos are dying, and that he copied one theory that someone made a few months ago. but the thing is, he probably took inspiration not straight up copied, besides he has good ideas on his own
Id love more videos like this. Matpat's area of expertise is easily buisness, so more videos talking about the buisness side of things would be cool and has room to be genuinely informative
I don't think zootopia 2 is a bad idea at all, years ago when it came out I walked out of the theater wanting more. I felt the world had a lot more it could do. I'm glad that it's getting a sequel, but I no longer trust the writers to be able to be smart with it, and it fills me with a sense of foreboding dread.
I personally feel that you should always want more of a movie. It means you became invested in the characters, the story. You want the experience to continue, but that doesn't mean it should.
i'm interested in seeing more of the zootopia world too, i'd love a hint of wtf they're planning though cause after the first movie anything of that level of drama happening to nick or judy just feels like the universe is intentionally screwing with them
Sometime 15+ years ago Disney went from "let's make movies everyone will love" and doubled down on big eyed princesses and "live action" remakes. I'm old enough to remember when "the new Disney movie" was an easy sell because nobody would be bored and everyone would find something to love. And they offered products for teens and even bought up miramax for grown ups
I think most people don't bother with suggestions because A) people making these video are UA-camrs and their advice is probably not good for a billion dollar empire so what's the point And B) people WANT it to die, for good reason, they deserve it.
one of the scary things ive heard about Disney's reshooting problem that wasnt fully mentioned here is how in the dark they keep their actors about scripts, scenes and even their own characters. things have become so much more ridgid, characters lack the life and fun their used to have, all because the actors themselves have no idea whats going on. A lot of times actors are called in for shoots, given a script and what to do, and have no idea about context or anything. Which is especially prevalent throughout the marvel series. if i remember correctly their is an interview with tom holland somewhere that has him discussing this problem during end game. all in all, the actors themselves arent allowed to act out the characters they no best, or advise on script changes like the good ol days. There's no imporvising or character to them leaving the content over all feeling dull and bland, really proving the point that these films are in fact just desprate cash grabs and content pumps by big wigs who no nothing about plot, flow, and character. its truely sad to have grown up and seen my favorite shows and characters become this. shame on you disney. shame on you.
THIS. The actors need to be able to *act* the role, not be puppets. Can you imagine how boring things like D&D (yes ik I'm a nerd) would be if players were told their characters stories, but only a very limited amount so they had no idea what was going on? It would be so bland. Plus, while I have no way of knowing, I feel like the scripts they reshoot or redo were actually pretty good (or at least not worth doubling production cost to get rid of) because they hired great people to direct it.This isn't a random highschool project where no one cares
IIRC Tom Holland was kept in the dark because he was notorious for leaking plot points before the movie came out. I don't think I've seen any of the other Marvel actors talk about being in the dark like that - but if you can point me at an interview or something, I'll gladly admit defeat here.
Yeah the good old days, like when Empire Strikes Back happened and even while filming the movie they didn't give away the twist to anyone but James Earl Jones because his audio was dubbed in afterwards.... This has been going on forever, and movies are better for it, frequently it is to get the more natural reaction on camera, or because some people (Tom Holland, Carrie Fisher) were just incapable of keeping a secret.
If there was a bottom-up mechanism for getting talent into positions of influence so they can create things we actually wanna see maybe we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Something I realized lately is the problem with modern brands, especially Hollywood. Is it’s not about consistency anymore, it’s about growth. They don’t want a consistent year after year of profit each new year has to be BETTER than the last and that’s just not realistic, it’s finally catching up to them.
I was thinking about this too. I don't really get the mindset of everything has to always be bigger and better. Upward mobility does have a ceiling even if you can't see it, not to mention how a lot of the world is having issues regarding pay at work, cost of living, and normal expenses, how does it not click that wanting growth rather than consistency can be playing against them? They should be growing their customer loyalty and community rather than greed, as that usually has a healthy turn in the positive. As long as you did not loose money, to me, the year is a success.
Always love hearing Team Theorist talk about business “sense.” Honestly I would’ve loved an “Econ Theory” channel especially with your graphics and method of storytelling.
MatPat basically explained how each of the channels his team created were able to become so popular. Not only that, he also shows how how his methods work since each video has so many views which translates to more subscribers and these subs translates directly to more views. Simply put, when it comes down to determining how popular a channel is and how much growth is expected within a period of time, there's a method to the madness, and it shows!
This video summarized the problem so well, especially the current state of Star Wars. The only additional thing that I think should have been mentioned is how some of the decision makers at big companies blame the fans for their movies flopping.
Blaming the fans and especially if there is an -istaphobe component to it. Case in point: Ghostbusters 2016. It didn't tickle the fancy of a lot of original Ghostbuster fans, and putting the original cast as just 'member berry cameos (especially Bill Murray's cameo) that paid them no respect didn't help either. Especially for me, it wasn't the characters I grew up with and the type of humor wasn't my cup of tea. Putting people like me on blast for not seeing it because we're a bunch of woman haters? Not gonna win any fans over. Afterlife had a wonderfully diverse cast, primarily a female lead (without making it a hard selling point of love it or else you're an -istaphobe) and gave love to the original characters. That did much better. Just like Mando season 2 bringing in Luke Skywalker at the end (which is rumored to have been done without certain bigwigs knowledge because they didn't want the old school characters). That got the biggest positive fan response Star Wars had generated since Force Awakens was announced.
@stu729 That's a great example! Even after not liking the trailer, I was gonna watch Ghostbusters 2016 because why not, it's just a movie. After all the fan bashing, I happily enjoyed other movies that year. Still haven't seen it, but I enjoyed Afterlife.
I like how creators on UA-cam are able to dissect and point out problems that an industry refuses to acknowledge. Hollywood has been around decades longer yet these creators not only identify the problems and offer a reasonable solution, but do it MUCH faster than these industry leaders who should be experts can.
I think youtube channel's have smaller teams make make it easier to assess the problem and act on it. Bigger corp will take longer and have bigger problems with changes.
Because ironically the Hollywood system is too big. Each person involved is so disconnected they don't see it but on a UA-cam channel with a dozen people team at most it is much more clear.
if a youtube channel cant or dosnt identify these things immediately so as to fix them ASAP, the channel dies. if a big multinational corp dosnt, they can still coast for years, decades even. theres no impetus for a big established business to fix its problems quickly, which leads to a mentality of being able to just put it off indefinitely
It’s good to see you still putting in the same amount of energy and effort into each of your videos, man. This one definitely shows the care you still have for your own content.
Disney gives me blizzard vibes. Company creates beloved classics and sees a lot of success before selling out and slowly milking their most loved products dry.
Not to mention that when something fails…they are quick to point at people who call them out on things. They never look at themselves, they blame us. The consumer and then continue to pump out failure after failure
I fill its funny that he openly admits to be playing us and the algorithm, but hey i can respect a honest hustler that has self-reflection "self-reflection " is a dying thing in today's modern world.
i think a big reason is most people nowadays can’t afford to shill out cash to go to the theatre or for a streaming service. couple that with the fact that you don’t make it worth it in the first place because you prioritize quantity over quality, well.
Zootopia's original storyline was incredible; predators had to wear shock colars from an early age which kicked in whenever they were becoming aggressive, primarily to protect the prey population. However, they were not calibrated correctly and punished preditors for experiencing any intense emotion: joy, distress etc. Nick was the protagonist, where he made a sidehussle of a thrill park for preditors where their collars were removed for their duration there (not entirely legally, which is where Judy would come in), as an escape from the dismall life they lead. You can find this storyline in compilations of storyboards and even some unpolished animations here on UA-cam. Imagine my disappointment when the buddy-cop storyline came out instead. If the second film was turned into a prequal where the original storyline is discussed it would be fantastic, though that's unlikely to be the case.
The original plot is just amazing, but I believe it's too much of a risk to take for companies like Disney. You have to remember that Zootopia is marketed towards children, so a plot like that would definitely turn a lot of parents away from the movie, especially today
It hadn't occurred to me how uniquely qualified you are to critique their release schedule choices. Your team is clearly much better at this game than the largest media company Earth has ever seen, and that's kind of weird!
It's not actually *that* weird.A small team is far easier to handle than a humongous amount of people spread all over the world with widely different backgrounds, not to mention shareholders which often aren't an issue with smaller companies who don't need them. That last fact is a completely separate can of worms as there are rules and regulations that need to be followed, not even to mention that said shareholders want to see growth among anything else, despite what would be best for the company.
That's what happens when ppl become disjointed from their audience. Aka putting ur own agenda I ur product without actually seeing if ur audiences want it and doing so blatantly.
love how this video is basically an unofficial guide on running a UA-cam channel. It does a good job at explaining the process used by Disney compared to the theorist channels or really any successful channel on the platform. keep up the good work.
Companies are so determined to pump out as many products or as much content as they can, as quickly as they can. I’d much rather wait a longer period of time for a finished product with love and effort put into it. It makes the release so much more exciting.
This is a pattern I see in game development and the communities people just don’t seem to understand the work that goes into a good video games for example let’s talk about the unreleased silk song it’s taken 6 years so far, versus cod games (I personally do t play cod so correct me if I’m wrong) which cod releases a game about every year the problem being is these new games probably aren’t always fleshed out and also I really doubt there’s much hype for them either and it’s just a cash grab from what I see (again not a cod player) while silksong has theses expectations and has hype being built up and people are kinda hungry for some good hollow knight content or have been waiting a while and probably gonna buy day one Of release and on top of that’s it’s probably going to be very good and fleshed out so it will go very well, meanwhile cod it releases every year it’s nothing special maybe some new maps weapons or balancing but it’s not going to be any extreme differences so theirs no expectations or hype so people just buy it when they get completely bored of the last thing and want a new game And this makes a pattern that makes people think oh coding isn’t hard a cod game takes only a year to make surely silksong should have been out by now. But the thing is silk song (presumably again idk anything about cod maybe the games are better the. What I hear the newer ones I mean) is probably going to be fleshed out and going to take more time as they are going to make sure weapons and enemies are balanced for FAIR but CHALLENGING gameplay (fair meaning it’s very possible you have the tools you need and every fight is “fair” while challenging means it’s hard it takes skill but not luck and your given the proper tools to win) another thing to add is people are like well these mods release stuff so fast. Well first of all mods are faster because they don’t follow the same rules the devs have they don’t follow the same development style so they can come up with faster or less fleshed out solutions (not to say mods are bad they are in fact really good usually) so people are like why is it so slow to develop well it’s because game developers have to follow certain guidelines they (for example Mojang wouldn’t add mobs or events that can place or break blocks (with the exception of a few different things such as creepers or lightning) while mods don’t
For example, Marvel movies did much better when there was time between each one, atleast a year and a half between each movie and it kept people coming back
I met an architect who'd done some work for Disney (quite a few years ago) and he said they would literally physically hand him a blank check. They got VERY complacent with any kind of business or budgeting logic.
I LOVED this episode! What I'd want to look into is seeing how Disney's past films were spaced out back in the 1900s and the effect it had on the company's bottom line.
So I've been watching Matpat ever since Game Theory was a solo channel, and almost eight years later, the Theorist channels STILL have a seal of quality that's almost unrivaled on YT. I trust a good Theorist channel video more than just about any other theory channel's out there, and that's because they put research and effort into every episode, and it SHOWS. The quality is always top-notch, and they work hard to preserve that reputation. They know their audience and have adapated as their audience changes. Matpat is insanely smart, and this episode just highlights that. Proud to be a theorist!🎉
It was really interesting to hear about how you and your team manage the channels and throughoutly plan out each episode. 😯 This concept of placing risky or not so good received episodes between safer ones makes a lot of sense!😄
Ok I need to give you an apology… I’ve heard of this channel and this guy for at least 6-7 years and never got into his continent, but after seeing this… this man knows what’s up. I’m subbing now after years of ignoring your channel man
It really comes down to knowing your audience, knowing how your idea will do finically, not being overconfident, acknowledging there’s always a chance for failure and if it’s sustainable business wise. And of course, putting the customers first. Disney wouldn’t have become what it did without us making it become what it did. We don’t need Disney, Disney needs us.
I feel like they used to make me excited about their filmas and then nostalgic when time passed but now there are barely any classics that aren’t 20+ years old
@@Princes_Luna Yea and they're trying to rely on our nostalgia, which isn't a reliable business practice. "You guys liked Alladin right? Well, what if we did it again but live-action and Will Smith doing a Robin Williams impression? Or whatever about this other live-action remake that you watched as a kid? How about another?" Like you can't keep doing that over and over again and expect the audience to be excited seeing Cinderella....again....after how ever many movies and spinoffs from other studios over the many many years....
It's interesting to me how disney's stock-price graph looks the same as the youtube analytics, with the up and down spikes, I'd never realized that before. I think there's definitely a lot the movie industry can learn from youtube strategies, imagine if mr beast was consulted on how to run a movie studio...i wonder if they have one of those 1-10 graphs at the disney hq for how well their recent movies have been...all 10 out 10's...LOL also i bought the thermal mug. i needed it.
I work at a movie theatre and I can say from experience and from more than just statistics, the movies that have a lower budget have always done better for business. Usually it's because they are one offs, aren't remakes, and usually aren't part of a set franchise. Spiderverse and Ninja Turtles are two of the biggest things that are part of a franchise that actually did well, but it's because one is a modern twist on a incredibly popular series and the other is a sequel to one of the most successful animated films of all time. I personally loved a lot of the recent non-franchise Disney movies, Elemental is one of my favorite movies of the year and Haunted Mansion was not only really funny but also a really heartfelt and sweet film. The way I see it Disney needs to focus most on creating new ideas, because although it's more risky to not invest in a franchise but it'll not only help them create new series but also to create new stories people actually want to see because it's fresh.
18:37-18:52 Hearing you say that reminded me of the production of The Thief and the Cobbler. Like Disney with their movies, Richard Williams would also throw out days of work that didn’t meet his exact standards. This resulted in sequences that while visually amazing, don’t come together as a unified whole.
This reminds me of the saying my dad has: measure twice, cut once. It is mind boggling how the studios are running and i do hope we see greater content from the smaller creators to fill the gaps in quality entertainment.
I've largely stopped following the stuff Marvel is releasing because of the amount of failures they released. I experiment when sewing and often measure once cut, twice. But half the time I'm working on scraps and not actually expecting to either get a good result or expecting to be able to sell or gift it. But I'm always aware of how much fabric and thread I'm wasting because I can see it. I feel like since Disney can't physically see how much is actually being wasted they're spending more and more.
Disney didn't really care for a long time because they thought themselves too big to fail. Well, turns out when your actors, writers, and directors insult a lot of the fan base, that's gonna affect how much money you get.
I don't know, as someone who loves Disney, I have been kind of hoping for this for years now. When they were doing really well, the parks were great and they had the occasional excellent animated movie among the other just "good" ones, when they had the money to make all these acquisitions but hadn't spent it yet that's when it was a great time to be a Disney fan. But since then, they have added barely anything to the parks meanwhile Universal has a new park and Nintendo on top of the wizarding world. Same with movies and even videogames now too they just farm their IP out to other companies looking to make a quick buck... Its all just damaging their brand. But as you said, we know they have so many talented people over there, they just need a chance to shine and not be forced to work on yet another live action remake.
@@crazy_potatoe0134 You say that so casually, are you really saying that you wouldn’t feel sad at all if everytjing disney-related just flat-out disappeared from the world?
It really is a shame that the people running the show have no idea what they're doing, and the people who endlessly bust their asses to make these products get shafted through no fault of their own. I've got nothing but respect for the guy putting in 15 hour days 7 days a week for months on end. What I have no respect for is the asshole who steps in and tells him to start over 3 months into the project. The best movies and shows ever made have either been allowed to do whatever they wanted, or did it against the studio's wishes anyway. It's weirdly why I like what Riot did with Arcane. They did step in 2 years into the project and told them to start over, except they increased the budget and gave them even more time to get it finished. Man, I don't care if Season 2 doesn't come out until 2027, so long as they maintain the same quality of animation and storytelling. And I think that's one thing Disney really doesn't understand. Just because there's a massive demand for something, doesn't mean you give it to people as quickly as possible in some desperate scramble to maximize profits. People want quality products, especially from established franchises that they've fallen in love with. Anyway, I'm stoned and rambling. You have yourself a fantastic day sir, ma'am, or other.
The thing is, I’m not opposed to sequels. Like Zootopia 2 and suchlike doesn’t sound like a bad time. The problem is when it gets to be like Toy Story, when you took a couple films with a lot of heart and diluted it to five main movies, a spin-off, and multiple shorts. Like not only is it an obvious cash grab, but it’s just too much content for any consumer to realistically absorb and stay invested in
13:00 this is weirdly the problem I had back in 2020 with the Steven universe epilogue: there's nothing more depressing than to watch fun characters you grew up with turning into depressed people themselves!
With regard to the story section: we just want more original stories. Barbie and Oppenheimer are great examples of that. However, now Mattel is looking at starting their universe (we don't want more universes; it's been done). Overall, especially with the superhero genre, many fans are experiencing burnout from the oversaturation. We just want original plots and stories. (I'm also excited to see Blue Beatle next week just because it's something that hasn't been tapped into before and not Marvel).
@@tiandi5585 Blue beetle? I've seen the trailers and rolled my eyes because i'm so used to the flopping superhero movies, but i might watch it if it really is good
having universes is not the problem, the problem is having and giving the proper time for these stories to be told, its just that most studios see it as easy money, they see brands/products to sell to people, dc itself is only possibly getting on its legs now, before they just trowed things at a wall to see what stick, even Barbie and Oppenheimer kinda of sell one because of the brand and the other because of its director(not saying anything about the quality of the movies). what is needed is not necessarily "original plots and stories", even because lots of times stories we saw in movies are adaptations, or remade from something, because its safer investment in the eyes of the studio. its a problem of quality over quantity.

Disney hasn't been where creativity happens for at least a generation. If you look at it, every success they've had in terms of producing successful entertainment content has been a result of an aquisition, and happens to be the thing that came out before Disney inevitably squeezed it until it died.
And as soon as they aquire it - they ruin it 😢😢😢
The solution is to disband Disney.
Zootopia and frozen?
Disney is the E.A. of films, confirmed.
Awn7mFktpB4
I love how Mat is honest about having to run his business, while showing us the team is still passionate about the project and the community.
Some of the people there really need to grow up if even the audience has more sense than they do
Let Microsoft buy them then!
I sincerely hope your mom's friend didn't face any actual repercussions or follow-through from Disney. Stay safe out there, m8.
DOWN WITH THE DISNEY TYRANNY!
Aristocats was a pretty lit movie. I remember loving it so much as a kid
Disney last great movie was A Goofy Movie
@@HakeemTheDream616so true bro
I miss practical effects.
EEOAO is genuinely one of the most incredible movies I've ever seen. I still can't believe all they were able to achieve with so little.
Genuinely one of my top 10 movies to all times. Gives me hope for the future
Good story is number one, always, then you figure out how to make it happen.

That, exactly that!
Yeah I agree
i do since inside out is one of the greatest animate films ever.
@thegreatmonacage3782 the box office flop was Winne the Pooh (2011)
Can you imagine. What would actually happen if Disney managed to go bankrupt? If they had to sell their brands and companies, who would buy them and how would it work out?
It would be so funny if George Lucas bought Star Wars back from Disney.
It'd be great for Dana Terrace to buy The Owl House related assets.
There's been a rumor that Apple wants to buy Disney for a few years now
Edit to add: It might sound wrong, but Apple is a bigger company than Disney.
@EndoftheBeginning17 I had no idea they did that! Makes a lot of sense now, but takes nothing away from the impressive work they've done
@@d33pblu3 I'd imagine the same went for smaller companies like Active Enterprises or Phoenix Games.

Technically speaking they need to work merchandise into bigger projects like animated shows.
I mean, the writers aren't exactly good at writing either.

Something you've missed is that Disney (and really all major conglomerates) have so completely lost touch with reality they honestly don't know what will and will not work.
@@AudraAuclairTbh, frozen was like ten years ago, and frozen 2 isn’t that good, encanto is a rare gem

Then I heard the backstory and was amazed they put out such a solid, powerful resolution in only 3 episodes when they clearly had so much planned that they needed/wanted to resolve.
i love The Owl House, but the last season did get a lot of that Gravity Falls vibes
Facts!!!
I am taking a project management course rn and I think this info will come in handy to me later so thanks! 😊🙏
Is Disney operating via weekly scrum meetings? It explains so much!
Dude manages to give Disney better advice, in a 20 min video than some expensive consultancy firm could ever give them.

And disney still won't care to losten
I really like how honest the theory channels are. It seems that the last couple videos across the channels have been very honest and open.
Most of what I heard was "Disney lost their magic while giving unrealistic expectations in real life"
They kept making movies more realistic while making dozens of movies/series within a year, a very unrealistic expectation without overworking everyone.
They can make good stories to but that rarely ever happens
@@Madison-iw8ixThey’d strike gold if they just made more originals with folklore from all over the world.
@@BlueDauntless hence why I'm moving to worldwide cinema
LIKE WHAT ARE THEY DOING, THE ORIGINAL MOVIE IS MENT TO EMPOWER LITTLE GIRLS-
I think that another huge problem that Disney has is how they market their original stories. So people were like 'This annoying character is going to be in a lot of the movie, so I'm not gonna see it.'
The same is going on rn with their newest original IP 'Wish'.
I’m waiting for them to sell off Star Wars back to George lucas
So many amazing stories waiting to be told? What stories are you talking about? Can you please list out all the stories that should be told?
Take a small group of your animators, take some storyboarders, and tell them "We need concepts and ideas, throw us some spitballs and we'll greenlight the ones the team likes most - within reason."
Now, let this 'indie disney' brand develop with that team getting a specific name, so that audiences who pick up on what they put out have the ability to hype a project up if the team ends up doing well.
I feel like the main issue with Disney is that they completely lost the creativity they once had. Everything's a sequel or a remake.
Save for some animated films and some other stuff… but none of those things are advertised as much as the remakes
Basically the Disney magic feels dull
Even sequels used to be good. Cinderella III is one of the best Disney movies of all time, and also one of the last great Disney movies.
@ReferToAsQuote The magic died in 2012 when they killed their traditional animation department.
I’m really both mad and sad at Disney for the way their content has happened. I was so hopeful for phase 4 and the Star Wars sequels. But now I wish I could see something new and good
WHY? Because they went WOKE, have HORRIBLE character development, NO ORIGINAL stories, cater to the LGBTQ
@DaisyTheCorgiyou know you have to name 3 to properly use etc
I wouldn't mind Disney dying at all. Like you mentioned in your examples with Star Wars, Disney has completely ruined the characteristics of some of my childhood heroes with the new films. It would be sweet revenge if they keep on failing. That way, I hope they will become an example for other studios.
Nah what we need is disney get to the point where they are losing so much money that they will have to sell lucusfilm or marvel i would love if sony owned all of marvel since they can actually make films and anyone could do a better job of SW than Disney
I really want them to go bankrupt. They are super political and don't care to entertain. They only want to indoctrinate
I agree, he might miss sometimes but overall matpat and those he works with are incredible
They still do that
They still have interviews with the actors, writers and directors :P
They just dont tell you the kind of thing people want to hear about a kids movie
@@bosnianlady10 Do they? I have been a pretty heavy watcher of Disney channel for a long time and it seems like I haven't seen anything like those for a long time. By being transparent about the business side of content creation his audience trusts him more and he helps others in the creative space.

I agree. It is a world that would be so easy to break with bad writing
I personally feel that you should always want more of a movie. It means you became invested in the characters, the story. You want the experience to continue, but that doesn't mean it should.
i'm interested in seeing more of the zootopia world too, i'd love a hint of wtf they're planning though cause after the first movie anything of that level of drama happening to nick or judy just feels like the universe is intentionally screwing with them
I don't think the idea of zootopia 2 existing is bad just that they have to do something that works instead of a remake of the first movie
i heard they had a mini-series, wonder if that's true
Sometime 15+ years ago Disney went from "let's make movies everyone will love" and doubled down on big eyed princesses and "live action" remakes. I'm old enough to remember when "the new Disney movie" was an easy sell because nobody would be bored and everyone would find something to love. And they offered products for teens and even bought up miramax for grown ups
Can't express enough how much the honesty around channel management is appreciated. Really helps keep the soul of this group!
I love the way you guys do these things. You`re not just bashing disney (anyone could do that) but you`re actually providing suggestions to improve
This is how criticism should be. Just bashing helps no one. All it is is complaining
I think most people don't bother with suggestions because A) people making these video are UA-camrs and their advice is probably not good for a billion dollar empire so what's the point
And B) people WANT it to die, for good reason, they deserve it.
one of the scary things ive heard about Disney's reshooting problem that wasnt fully mentioned here is how in the dark they keep their actors about scripts, scenes and even their own characters. things have become so much more ridgid, characters lack the life and fun their used to have, all because the actors themselves have no idea whats going on.
@@OldSchoolLPsGames yeah him in particular means we probably need more verification on that.
Wow, props to you on being so transparent about how you run your channel. Seldom do we see honesty like that on UA-cam.

Something I realized lately is the problem with modern brands, especially Hollywood. Is it’s not about consistency anymore, it’s about growth. They don’t want a consistent year after year of profit each new year has to be BETTER than the last and that’s just not realistic, it’s finally catching up to them.
Yup infinite growth on a finite planet.
Well that's just cause modern Hollywood is controlled entirely by stock market shareholders at this point.

Pfff, they destroyed Star Wars the minute they released the 7th movie.
Disney didn't ruin Star Wars. The Internet did.
@stu729 That's a great example!
Even after not liking the trailer, I was gonna watch Ghostbusters 2016 because why not, it's just a movie.

@@coolnerdlll6053clearly you didn’t watch the video. Disney is very well if not fully responsible for Star Wars’s downfall.
Agreed. Also it's strange how studios used to know their customer. Now they use their knowledge of their customer to specifically drive them away...

i think a big reason is most people nowadays can’t afford to shill out cash to go to the theatre or for a streaming service. couple that with the fact that you don’t make it worth it in the first place because you prioritize quantity over quality, well.
True but I think Zootopia2 and Insideout2 will save Disney

It's not actually *that* weird.A small team is far easier to handle than a humongous amount of people spread all over the world with widely different backgrounds, not to mention shareholders which often aren't an issue with smaller companies who don't need them. That last fact is a completely separate can of worms as there are rules and regulations that need to be followed, not even to mention that said shareholders want to see growth among anything else, despite what would be best for the company.
It's really not...because of one word that explains it all...complacency.

I think south park perfectly explained why Disney is dying with only 2 sentences.
what were the sentences?
What did they say? I haven’t seen that special, I’ve been out of touch with South Park for a while
Companies are so determined to pump out as many products or as much content as they can, as quickly as they can. I’d much rather wait a longer period of time for a finished product with love and effort put into it. It makes the release so much more exciting.
This is a pattern I see in game development and the communities people just don’t seem to understand the work that goes into a good video games for example let’s talk about the unreleased silk song it’s taken 6 years so far, versus cod games (I personally do t play cod so correct me if I’m wrong) which cod releases a game about every year the problem being is these new games probably aren’t always fleshed out and also I really doubt there’s much hype for them either and it’s just a cash grab from what I see (again not a cod player) while silksong has theses expectations and has hype being built up and people are kinda hungry for some good hollow knight content or have been waiting a while and probably gonna buy day one
Of release and on top of that’s it’s probably going to be very good and fleshed out so it will go very well, meanwhile cod it releases every year it’s nothing special maybe some new maps weapons or balancing but it’s not going to be any extreme differences so theirs no expectations or hype so people just buy it when they get completely bored of the last thing and want a new game
And this makes a pattern that makes people think oh coding isn’t hard a cod game takes only a year to make surely silksong should have been out by now.

Matt didnt mention Studio-intereference like 'Cody Johnston' adresses in his new Union-Vid.
It was really interesting to hear about how you and your team manage the channels and throughoutly plan out each episode. 😯 This concept of placing risky or not so good received episodes between safer ones makes a lot of sense!😄
My farts are better than Matpat’s farts 💨
*If I had a dollar for every new idea Disney has come up with in the last 5 years, I would have 25 cents.*
*hmmmmmmm*
Which is ironic cause it happens once
So they basically had a 1/20th of a idea every year until 5.
Ok I need to give you an apology… I’ve heard of this channel and this guy for at least 6-7 years and never got into his continent, but after seeing this…
this man knows what’s up.
@@ayannahf0702 oh yeah one I really enjoyed was the Hillary Duff one!
It's interesting to me how disney's stock-price graph looks the same as the youtube analytics, with the up and down spikes, I'd never realized that before. I think there's definitely a lot the movie industry can learn from youtube strategies, imagine if mr beast was consulted on how to run a movie studio...i wonder if they have one of those 1-10 graphs at the disney hq for how well their recent movies have been...all 10 out 10's...LOL
also i bought the thermal mug. i needed it.
There might be something there.

It's finally completed:ua-cam.com/video/X7TYshhWh1Q/v-deo.html
It’s honestly sad to see Disney start to go on a downfall because there are some genuinely talented people at the studio.
Very much overworked people at the studio, I hope if disney does collapse they can find better jobs elsewhere
@@crazy_potatoe0134 You say that so casually, are you really saying that you wouldn’t feel sad at all if everytjing disney-related just flat-out disappeared from the world?
@@psychomagalor4902 Idk about anyone else here. but I wouldn't care.
Blue Beetle completely lived up to the hype. It also looks amazing when it comes to CGI.
The new Paw Patrol movie genuinely looks more interesting than any other recent superhero movie
@@whyrweherelol. My sibling wants to watch it.
