BOEING 747 vs. CESSNA Citation - GET OUT OF MY WAY (4K)

- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- An EL AL Boeing 747-400 Freighter made a 180° turn on runway 22L at Liege Airport and just after he finished the turnaround a small Cessna Citation Jet took a shortcut and entered the runway right in front of the Boeing 747. The heavy Boeing had to wait until the belgian citation jet departed.
EL AL Cargo is a daily visitor at Liege which is their european home base. They only have a single Cargo plane and they operate to two destinations. New York JFK and Tel Aviv.
Thanks for watching, I hope you liked it.
This was probably a good move to save time by the ATC. The wake turbulence of the Cessna won't affect the huge 747 at all but if the 747 departed before the Cessna, the Cessna would have had to wait for a long time as the wake turbulence from the 747 would literally blow the Cessna away. This in turn would require a longer hold time for the Cessna, occupying the runway and holding other jets behind it as well.
What else was obvious?
Whats wake turbulence?
@@homerbalderas1393 I recommend you watch a video on wake turbulence by Captain Joe on UA-cam. It is very interesting.
Story checks out 👍🏻
@@homerbalderas1393 you know how boats create waves and disturbance in the water behind them as they move through? Airplanes create the same disturbances in the air. Another plane following them can get tossed about or even flipped over. The 747 creates a very large wake and if that little Cessna took off right after a 747, it would be dangerous or even fatal. If you look up wake turbulence on you tube, there are examples of it.
Hope the 747 didnt suffer any wake turbulence.

I dont think that a plane like the small cessna with those small engines will cause wake turbulance for a 747
The Citation was cleared to take-off before the 747. Good reasons for this. 1: A small can get in the air whole lot faster than a 747. 2: A 747 produces tones more thrust than a Citation on and after takeoff. This can be trouble for smaller planes. Its called "wake turbulence"
Exactly! The wake turbulence from the Citation would be like somebody blowing a puff of cigarette smoke at that 747.
🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely right, but one small correction (sorry to nit-pick) but wake turbulence isn't caused by thrust, it's caused by the vortex off the wing tips mostly.
Thats true as well. Aircraft with winglets dont remove vorticies entirely they are just smaller at the tip of the winglets
Unfortunately, you are presenting facts where none were wanted. People will believe that the Cessna cut in line 'cause that's what they want to believe.

The Citation did not "cut in front" of the 747 as some have alluded to. The 747 was cleared onto the runway with a "Line up and Wait" clearance, and given permission to back taxi to the end of the runway, reverse direction and get situated for takeoff. Tower took good advantage of the time and cleared the Citation for take off while the 747 was still getting into position. Even when turned around and on center line, it doesn't look like the 747 was 100% ready to roll because his landing lights didn't come on until 1:11 into the video. At most, it delayed the Boeing 30 seconds and kept traffic moving.
Love the comments about avoiding the Citation's wake turbulence!
this happens a lot on my island with big and small planes :) !!!
Great explanation for those who don’t understand...Pilots listening to traffic would have been aware that the citation was cleared for take off and on the active. Furthermore, the Tower would have taken an extra precaution to ensure the instructions to “WAIT” where read back correctly. Nice and efficient sequence by the Tower.
I hope and think that most people understand that this is a controlled situation. And that the small plane had permission to do what it did. Still it must ba alowed to joke a bit about this :) Relax. It is funny anyway, for most people at least.
Yes. Cutting off a 747 (or any plane) would be a major incident.

Not amazing, normal, your car would turn just like that with one wheel in the front what can turn 90 degrees.
Yes, the tricycle gear allows for a tight turn radius. The main gear tires have to flex, and actually rotate backwards turning this tight turn.
Yes wendy, very incredible!
Sorry, but If you notice the maneuver, the 747 went out of the strip limits, getting dangerously close to the grass where he might have stuck

That was actually wise move, because she would have to wait for some long minutes after such a heavy plane, due to possibility of severe turbulence on the runway
And now, the 747 is forced to wait?
Is it not a case of deciding which aircraft has more priority over the other?
If one aircraft is ready to depart ahead of another, why is it fair that they now have to wait for another aircraft to get out of the way?
Sometimes it is just tough luck that one aircraft has to depart behind another and wait for the wake turbulence delay to expire.

Quayle Higgins nothing special?
“Hey mr 747 we’re just gonna cut right ahead of you my guy”

Very routine situation. The 747 wants to maximize runway length, the Citation not only requires less runway, but also wants to avoid the wake turbulence delay he will receive if the 747 goes first (in the US it would be a 2 minute delay if he leaves from the same point, in this case end of runway / 3 minute delay if he departs from that intersection after the 747 departs full length, I assume ICAO rules are close if not the same). The tower is in full control of the runway and who gets on it and where, so you can safely assume that everything you saw here was directed by the tower for max efficiency and safety. The ATC comms would have sounded something like this (using made-up callsigns since I don't know what they were using):
TOWER: El Al 1200, Runway two-two, back taxi approved, line up and wait, full length.
EL AL1200: El Al 1200, copy all, line up and wait two-two, full length.
TOWER: Citation 12345, wind calm, runway two-two at bravo (or whatever taxiway that was), cleared for takeoff, traffic, heavy 747 departure position, runway two-two full length.
CITATION12345: Citation 12345 is cleared for takeoff, two-two at bravo, traffic in sight.
By US rules, the 747 could then be cleared for takeoff once the Citation is 6000 feet down the runway and airborne, as long as the 747 will not be able to bust the required 3 miles of radar separation once both aircraft are airborne.

Lol, cars need to make 3-point turns to change direction, meanwhile this massive 747 pulls a 180...*seems legit*
747 had better driver ;)
Canadian Plane Spotter that is because when the 747 turns, it doesnt move forward as the whole plane turns with the moving of the front landing gear. Meanwhile with a car, the car has to move forward as it turns.
Obviously! The 747 is just pivoting on one set of wheels, without needing to move forward at all... cars have to move forward at all times...
That's because the 747 has body gear steering, as well as nose gear steering. Notice that the body gear is located aft of the wing gear. As the nose wheel is turned sharply left, for example, both body gear will turn a proportional amount to the right. The airplane will effectively turn around the wing gear as the nose gear turns left and the body gear turns right. Opposite happens in right turn.
If I had a 300ft wide runway to turn on I wouldn't need a 3-point turn either.
"He's behind me, isn't he?"
Been there, done that! Cairns International, and a 737 waiting on the runway. I was in a Citation and was cleared to enter the active ahead of the 737. Actually it is pretty certain ATC asked the Cessna to take off before the 747. If the Cessna takes off first, the 747 merely needs to wait until it takes off (a roll time of 30 seconds at most) but if the 747 takes off first then due to the different size categories the Cessna would have had to wait a minimum of 2 minutes for the wake turbulence to clear.

PS Living in TLV this aircraft is one of the most distinct ones that I can hear over my head on its route to LLBG ^_^
This action looks intentionally arranged by ATC. It's more safe depart small aircraft before heavy because wake turbulencies. In addition less than minute waiting is no problem against problematic separation after heavy departure. This way ATC is able to depart more airplanes in limited time from busy airport. 747 was cleared for TO in moment when Cessna gets positive climb, most effective manner to unload ground traffic.
yeah.. the Citation could take off and the 747 could follow inmediatly.. but if the 747 took off first the Cessna would had to wait until the wake turbulence clears..wich is a few minutes

Boeing 747 captain : Control tower , there's a mosquito 🦟 on my windshield.
I'm sure this order of takeoff would have been directed by ATC as the wake turbulence of the jumbo may well have caused problems for the much lighter Citation.
Absolutely. The tower controller is just doing his/her job minimising delay. The Citation is light but fast and can do an intersection departure (not full runway length). Let it go first and it hardly holds the 747 up. Let the 747 go first then you've got a wake turbulence issue - heavy ahead of light aircraft. Bigger gap needed, more overall delay.

It took the cesna less time to take off than the time it took the 747 pilot to move the power levers to full thrust.
that was a very clever decision from the tower controller. as the Cessna is a light aircraft, he should wait a longer time departing after a heavy 747. he departed from the intersection, not affected by the wake turbulence the 747 creates after takeoff. good time management!

I remember this FIRST time being on a 747, MUCH MORE than the other times! We had to wait till they were done working on the engine. I was sitting in a seat towards the back. The pilots cranked up the engines. Then started rolling. Nothing unusual yet. Then they started turning the jet.
That was when we saw a van start rocking. That had us wondering, then all of a sudden, the van goes rolling on its side to the top, a few times. As bad as that was, the airplane kept rolling forward. Then we saw a 2-ton Maintenance truck start rocking. We figured surely it aint going to roll that. Then that big truck rolled over. I don't know if it hurt the man in it.
Shortly after that, the airplane stopped. The captain said there was going to be a little delay. He was probably hoping none of us saw that. When it was happening, a stewardess was walking by, and I asked her if they normally blow away trucks. She might of called up front. The engines were only on idle, never reved up to do the damage.
We were heading to the country of Honduras on an Army deployment, leaving from the city of St. Louis, Mo. airport, in the Spring of the year 1986. What away to start my first deployment and my first time on an airplane! Though the 747 was better than being on a C-141. The important part aint the take-off, it's the landing!
Makes sense, engines idle is usually enough to taxi the plane with so toppling some puny cars definitely seems plausible
