I don't get why they're allowed to deflect questions. The _second_ a nominee refuses to answer a question, the senator should interrupt, thank them for their time, cut the hearing short, and reschedule it for the next day. Then they should keep repeating this until the nominee answers questions directly and promptly. Or even better, once a nominee refuses to answer or deflects, even just one time, they should automatically be disqualified for the position.
The answer to a yes or no question should begin with "yes" or "no". These people work for us, the public. They should be required to answer basic questions without fluff. How can a person possibly be a good judge if they refuse to answer simple questions from public representatives?

Being a Brit, reviewing these Senate hearings for the first time, I was overwhelmed with the integrity of Senator Kennedy, ( + Cruz and Hawley) opposed to the slippery, slimy evasiveness of those eels, being asked, politely, for Yes/No answers.
Obfuscation, for me, = deceit
Their elegantly crafted expertise in questioning, coupled with their collective grasp of the differing situations, to me, is remarkable.
The Houses of Parliament is a low life bar brawl by comparison.
