    Babette's Feast should've gotten more nominations than foreign film. Particularly picture, director for Gabriel Axel, actress for Stephane Audran, and Adapted screenplay also for Axel.

      That doesn't mean anything. Memory is only measurable from one person to the next. Popularity with movies and music is more a measure of marketing and business success than it is of artistic merit. The same is true for pop culture in general.

    Their expression of surprise at Michael Douglas being nominated for "Wall Street" doesn't make any sense. By the time the nominations were announced, Douglas had already won the Golden Globe for that film, making him not only a sure bet for an Oscar nomination but also the obvious frontrunner in the race. This was long before the SAG gave their own awards (which now establish perceived "favorites" in the acting categories), and there was a tremendous amount of overlap between Golden Globe and Oscar winners in the 80s. And although Williams is my favorite of the 5, looking at the list I don't see how you could have reasonably expected anyone but Douglas to win that year.
    I think Anjelica Huston was ignored *only* because she had won 2 years earlier. Despite what Roger says at 7:48, "The Dead" (one of John Huston's best films!) actually didn't perform well financially. Then again neither did "Prizzi's Honor", but it was far more widely distributed and seen.

    • @kristiantoimil
      @kristiantoimil 2 роки тому

      Regarding "The Dead", Ebert meant everybody in the Academy, which he regularly criticizes for not watching enough films to make informed decisions in selecting nominees and winners

    • @flaccidusminimus2170
      @flaccidusminimus2170  2 роки тому

      @@kristiantoimil It's difficult to be sure what he meant by The Dead as a movie that "everybody saw" (the public sure didn't), but I don't think it even makes sense to assume that many Academy voters saw it. Did Vestron Pictures have money for an awards campaign and distribute screener tapes to voters? I doubt it.

      Yeah I don't get their surprise at the Michael Douglas nomination. He had been building up momentum for a while and 1987 was indisputably his year, he was the king. 2 huge movies and a career-defining role. It's sort of like Jennifer Lawrence in 2012 (with her commercial hit in The Hunger Games and her critical hit in Silver Linings Playbook) or Richard Dreyfuss in 1977 (with Close Encounters and The Goodbye Girl).

      @@DoncoEntAgain The Best Actor category also would have looked much worse with even several years of hindsight if they had taken Gene's advice and nominated Michael Douglas for "Fatal Attraction" and Kevin Costner for "The Untouchables". Those are not performances that stand out as all-timers!

    1. Anna - Sally Kirkland is a critics' favourite in 1987 to winter 1988 (Best Actress, Los Angeles FCC, Golden Globes for Drama, Independent Spirit) and her role is quite familiar with struggling actors and actresses. The film likewise screened in the 1987 New York Film Festival.
    2. Dark Eyes - Highly agree with S&E... Mikhalkov's self-indulgent and absurd dramedy won Mastroianni the 1987 Cannes Film Festival Best Actor award.
    3. My Life as a Dog - Lasse Hallstrom's minimalist character study was 1987's biggest "art-house" (A jargon film critics like me use all the time.) hit so its two nominations aren't surprising.
    4. The Whales of August - Lindsay Anderson's 1987 film was a box-office disaster during its theatrical release so I likewise agree with S&E here with Ann Sothern's nod.
    5. Street Smart - Morgan Freeman won two major national film critics' honours in winter 1987 for his appealing role as a pimp in Richard Donner's (Superman) Street Smart.
    6. Hope and Glory - another "art-house" hit of 1987 written and helmed by prominent filmmaker John Boorman. The British actresses, actors, and filmmakers' branch in the Academy's membership roster definitely gave it more votes for possible nominations.

    The moment (1978) Oscar discovered their awards help box office, was the moment Oscar stopped caring about the best but they now hate huge budget films and award the winner to low budget films

    • @flaccidusminimus2170
      @flaccidusminimus2170  3 роки тому

      I suppose that depends on your definition of "low budget". In the past 10 years, only "Moonlight" and "Nomadland" were budgeted under $10 million. When people use the phrase "low-budget" it usually applies to movies that don't have any major funding. I don't think any Best Picture winners would qualify.

    • @ssssssstssssssss
      @ssssssstssssssss 2 роки тому

      And for most nations in the world 10 million would not even be low budget. It’s only considered low budget in the US where you have 300 million dollar movies.
      Big budget movies also have to play it safe because so much money is on the line so they end up not being great. unless the director can prove himself like Nolan, Spielberg or Cameron and acquire big budgets. Like Blade Runner 2049 probably took years to make it above water despite being one of the best movies of the last decade.

    That scene they show from Broadcast News at 0:44 where Joan Cusack is screaming and running around with the tape-- when I first watched the movie that scene really got on my nerves and made a bad first impression. I didn't much care for the rest of the movie either. Felt it was full of milquetoast, middlebrow humor.

    I agree re Michael Douglas, he should have been nominated for FA, not WS. Gordon Gekko was really just a glorified Bond/soap opera villain, any lesser actor could have done just as good a job. FA on the other hand, well, the character on the paper was a grade-A jerk; he cheated on his wife, covered it up until he no longer could, took no responsibility for his actions, and was really responsible for much of the havoc throughout the film yet he ended up with the Hollywood happy ending. Yet, because of his performance, we actually were fooled and sympsthised with him all throughout the fil. However, I just think the Academy viewed WS as high art and looked down on FA because of its exploitation-esque subject matter. This no doubt resulted in GC losing the award to Holly Hunter.

    • @flaccidusminimus2170
      @flaccidusminimus2170  Рік тому

      They hardly "looked down" on it if it received a Best Picture nomination! That indicates broad admiration across the various branches. Douglas wasn't nominated for Fatal Attraction because the Acting Branch isn't as attracted to depictions of ordinary men as they are to grandiose or bizarre figures.

    SNOBS
    1. Barfly - Not a typical Oscar film so why did S&E have to amplify their dismay for its non-nomination? Its bad box office and relatively good critics' reviews hurt as well.
    2. Roxanne - S&E, I concur
    3. Full Metal Jacket - I agree with them as well.
    4. The Dead - John Huston's swan song was an outright box-office bomb in its late 1987 theatrical release so its lack of major nods (save for Anjelica's brother Tony and Rachael Dowling and Dorothy Jeakins's costume design) was expected.
    5. Nuts - Martin Ritt's stilted, obnoxious and talky drama starring La Streisand was expected to be disregarded by AMPAS.
