I think Gene would have loved a lot of Sandler’s later work. Especially Punch Drunk Love and Uncut Gems. He knew Sandler had the right stuff and sadly never had a chance to see it. Even in The Wedding Singer he knew Sandler was going on to greater things.
@@spencerhensley5495 Siskel would have hated Sandler's movies. There is one specific thing about Sandler's paltry few good movies they all have in common: Sandler had nothing to do with them except for the acting.
My reviews for each film City Hall (thumbs down; really disappointing given the talent involved) The Late Shift (thumbs up; a movie that actually was good because it was authentic and factual) Happy Gilmore (thumbs up; one of Adam Sandler's best comedies)
The main problem with the Late Shift was the casting. Kathy Bates was the best actor among the regulars, and she actually looked a lot like Helen Kushnick. As for the two stars, well, I kept being distracted by that dang chin on the actor playing Leno, and the guy playing Letterman wasn't even close, IMO. Still, never really much of a fan of the real things, actually. Letterman hasn't really been interesting years before he gave up the throne -- I much preferred his earlier shows when he was able to do more physical gags -- and I never liked Leno at all. I thought he tried too hard for the joke, and I didn't think he was a particularly good interviewer. Johnny Carson could handle the interviews and keep things light to carry the show. Leno simply didn't. But I understand Johnny was a REAL a---hole behind the scenes. If I have to choose a late night host I REALLY liked and admired, I'd have to go back to Steve Allen. Shame so many of his Tonight Show episodes are probably gone forever.
Top 5 movies that I liked but got two thumbs down 1. Happy Gilmore 2. Home Alone 3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4. Ace Ventura Pet Detective 5. The Mighty Ducks
12:33 - Ebert sticking up for Chris Farley
Gene was right about Sandler. Too bad he didn’t live long enough to see Punch-Drunk Love.
10:30 - Happy Gilmore
Gene: "Adam Sandler has a better movie in him. Go make it!"

Gene was spot on with the Late Shift a great movie
Wow, that 'Life Savers' add unlocked a deep memory
Happy Gilmore and Coneheads left me wondering how much Subway stock Lorne Michaels owned.
I don’t understand how Roger doesn’t understand the wink and the nod that is the Subway advertisement
I’m surprised Usual Suspects didn’t get nominated for Best Picture.
I miss the cold cut combo
"Happy didn't seem very happy."........................that's the joke?
ha?
At 24:40, was that 'ol Joy Behar in that A1 steak sauce ad?
And Steve Harris from The Practice. And one of the guys from The Sopranos. Joe Lisi I believe.
I think they were way too hard on Adam Sandler and Chris Farley. Happy Gilmore is my favorite Adam Sandler movie

this movie without a doubt is Sandler's best and funniest movie, Siskel and Ebert just don't get it.
I loved Ebert, but he was such a star F-er. Siskel nailed the late night review. It was honest.
Late shift. Total waste of space. Not interesting in 1996. Not a classic in 2024. Ebert was right.
Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Will Ferrell and others were the death of comedy.
