    I have 20 plus years old currant bushes...they aren't doing well. I saw a recommendation quite awhile back that said they don't live much longer than this and that one should dig them out and replace with new bushes. Is this what you would recommend as well? I did not get many berries this year. thanks!

    • @PotsTrowels
      @PotsTrowels 13 годин тому

      20 years is fairly old, but with pruning, feeding and mulching you can keep them healthy and fruiting for longer. Sometimes a harder prune in winter to remove old wood will rejuvenate them. Martin

      @debra-mr7cr 7 годин тому

      @@PotsTrowels thx so much, I will do that this fall. But is there a point where you would get rid of the old bush entirely and just take starts from it to start a new bush? I didn't mention that It is both my black and red currants that were planted so long ago, actually some of the reds are probably 30 yrs old that I have kept going through pruning but it just doesn't seem to be working at this point.

    I was worried when a saw last podcast that this was the last one in this season. What will I listen to in the bath On a Sunday morning? Then I was so relieved to hear about the bloopers coming along. That will be fun! You having spoken about pruning raspberries I think I might have been doing mine wrong because I didn't have much fruit this year. Need to go and check the purchase labels for variety, find how to prune them and put some potash on. Thank you for another informative podcast. Have a good rest and I look forward to hearing you again next season from the bath in Breezy Point! :-).

      Thanks for the question and feedback! - We've discussed your question in the podcast (episode out this Sunday 11th Aug) but in short, as it's an espalier it may need some of these vertical shoots, they just need pruning back (these 'spurs' may then be where fruit comes from) -Sean

      Thanks for this - we actually discussed the question in our podcast episode (out this Sunday 11th) but in short - it's a question of giving it some time - if a plant details say it'll grow to 2m x 2m then give it that space but it might take time to reach that size - can always fill in with bedding plants in the interim - hope that helps in short term but for a longer answer have a listen to the podcast - will try to remember to link to it here once it's live! -Sean

      @Sussy-Walter Місяць тому

      For most variety of figs in the UK, the only fruits that can mature are the little fuirtlets that was grown from the last season. E.g. in late summer, small figs would appear. They overwinter on the tree and mature the next year. If your arera is prone to frost you need to insulate them during winter, usually by covering them with straws.

    So my three sets of bottom leaves all started to go yellow this plant is super healthy but I let it get as long as a ruler 30 cm at the end they now have tendrils and mine splits like a fork in the road about 20 cm up so if you can imagine that it’s a 30 cm sweet pea plants die snipped off the yellow leaves close to the soil the rest of it’s beautiful and now I have one stem growing to the left one stem growing to the right at the very top of my sweet pea plantsWhere do you think I should go from here it decided to split left and right on its own so should I pinch both left and the right growthsAnd should I let it just continue what it’s doing or pinch??? I’m so confused mine has not begun to flower and I didn’t see it flowering if it was only 15 cm tall I thought the purpose of beans and peas was to grow straight up and push out on their own my bean plants I planted beside the snow peas are very healthy as well and they are 3 feet tall so I didn’t think 30 cm was very much the only reason ICame to U2 was to find out why the bottom leaves were yellowing😅

I do understand I had a lot of information but my main question was why the bottom leaves are going yellow and that's even on my boyfriend's attempt at growing them as well lol it seems to be normal for this type of pea. I thought it was just mine doing it. So it finally flowered in the center of the "fork"that I spoke about. It has taken a week since pinching it's now 60 cm tall as well so clearly there's progress so really I shouldn't question anything else😁 even with the yellowing leaves the plant seems very healthy ☺️ I will watch your podcast so I can learn more for next year thanks for reply

    Thank you for a very interesting and informative podcast. I am taking notes of all the interesting nurserys and when we come to Old Blighty in November will see if we can visit some. Perhaps there won't be open at that time of year.

    I have had very poor results this year using Miracal grow compost. I have started mixing my own potting compost this year and compared with miracle grow the results are astounding.

    Another very interesting podcast, thank you for the clarifications on geraniums and pelagonias. I will definitely speak the right language in future. Long Island is part of New York City which has a number of islands interestingly! One of the main reasons for banning Peat, is that as the Peat is cut It creates channels, the rain washes down the channels and washes out a lot of the substrate leaving decimated moors. No doubt it emits gases but My personal opinion is that The government explains it as an environmental issue that causes greenhouse gases. More understandable for the general public. I'm guessing people In towns are not that bothered about substrate being washed down into the valleys and are more concerned about the effects on them of global warming.

    Great little video, well done. Much to my shame, I have never once attended the Lincs Show! Not good really as a life long(57yrs) resident of Bourne. Had hoped to go this year, but the sudden loss of my wife's twin brother curtailed that plan obvs. Will try again next year, have the Heckington Show to look forward to hopefully. Glad to see in the vid, show gardens, exhibitors etc. Needs expanding, as we know a bit about "growing stuff" here in Lincs. Keep up the great work.
