  • Hi everyone, this is John from Zoom and I'm here to introduce you to the U-44 Handy Audio Interface.
    The U-44 is a compact, 4-in/4-out audio interface that enables you to record and perform wherever you are. Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, the U-44 comes equipped with the features you need to record 24-bit/96 kHz audio anywhere. Use the U-44 with your PC, Mac, or iPhone/iPad via USB-or as a standalone AD/DA converter and mic preamp. No other audio interface provides this much versatility, value, and performance.
    Inspired by our Zoom H-series recorders, the U-44 is equipped with high-performance, low-noise mic preamps that enable recording and playback at resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz, plus compatibility with Zoom’s Interchangeable Input Capsules.
    The U-44 features a full array of inputs and outputs so you’ll always be prepared for any recording or live performance. Two combo inputs with independent gain knobs and multi-color level indicators provide flexibility for connecting mics, keyboards, and mixers. 48V phantom power can be supplied to inputs 1 and 2, and input 1 supports Hi-Z input for connecting passive guitars, basses, or other instruments. MIDI I/O jacks enable synchronization with devices like electronic keyboards, controllers, and synthesizer or sampler modules.
    Thanks to its 10-pin Zoom connector, the U-44 is compatible with all of our interchangeable input capsules (sold separately), representing a powerful field recording setup. Choose from six capsules-X/Y, Shock Mount X/Y, Mid-Side, Shotgun, Stereo Shotgun, and Dual XLR/TRS Combo Input-each with its own unique applications. Record the audience during your live performance, or connect our SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun for dialogue and sound design on your latest film project.
    Wherever you want to record, the bus-powered U-44 forms the perfect centerpiece of your mobile studio. Connect instruments, monitors, and other devices when you’re recording at home-or hook it up to your iPhone/iPad to make music on the go. If bus power isn’t available, the U-44 can run on just two AA batteries, allowing you to record anywhere.
    With advanced monitoring options, the U-44 lets you dial in your ideal mix. Create a balanced headphone mix between your click track and main out signals during live performances. Or balance the cue and main out signals when you’re DJ’ing. The outputs of channels A and B can be muted, providing even more control. Plus, direct monitoring enables you to hear the live signal you’re recording without latency-simply adjust between the input and computer playback signals to create the perfect mix.
    Multiple output options-including 1/4”, RCA, and S/PDIF-allow you to connect DJ mixers, speakers, and more. Monitoring your mixes is easy thanks to a studio quality headphone output with independent volume control. The direct monitor knob makes it possible to blend your headphone mix between the input and playback signals-perfect for live electronic music performance and DJ’ing.
    When you’re transferring audio, high-quality AD/DA conversion is critical. The U-44 functions in standalone mode as a high-quality mic preamp and AD/DA converter to ensure complete transparency when converting audio formats.
    Combine the U-44 with Pro Tools First, Ableton Live 9 Lite, and Steinberg Cubasis LE, all included with the U-44, so you will have everything the modern music creator needs.

    I've been using this unit for a couple years now. It definitely has some quirks but overall a very versatile until for small project recording. The main issue I am having is that I can't figure out how to mute a direct line in to this unit. I am recording 2 mics + 1 direct line of guitar and running to a DAW. I can't figure out a way to get the direct line out of the headphone mix. It's very distracting. I tried muting the channel in the DAW. No luck. I tried using the DAW "balance" feature but that didn't do anything that I could hear. I've also tried running a separate headphone amp using the main outs. No luck. I looked at the manual but didn't see anything about how to route the signals to solve this problem. I would like to record the direct line for re-amping later, but don't want to hear it in the headphones while I am tracking. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Is it possible to connect an iPhone or iPad with Lightning connector or the new iPhone 15 with USB-C via the U-44's RCA plugs to a DJ controller (RCA input) to have a full audio level? At the moment I use the headphone plug of the iPad to connect to the controllers RCA inputs and the signal is very weak.

    This seems like a fascinating blend between UA2 and the Zoom field recorders. I actually do both music and video/tv production which is why this is interesting especially at the price point. If I could use this to record field sound for interviews and use it for live performance and music recording, Great! I think my biggest question is LATENCY, How good or bad is the latency, (Zoom has a great reputation on this). Secondarily, the headphone monitoring I have seen reviews of it being weak. I assume pushing that to a headphone amp would work? So keeping within the Zoom family basically at this price point I would be torn between the UA2 and the U44. I am interested in peoples application of this device. Right now I am strongly considering getting the U44 and then upgrading when needed to the Zoom TAC or UAC8.

    Love your stuff. I’m using the U44 with stellar results but I have a question. Can I pan the two XLR input channels? I’m finding the USB output is the same on the left and right despite panning on my hardware mixer. You see, I’m sending my mixer’s left output the U-44’s channel one XLR input and the right output to the U-44’s channel 2 input but when I listen back to the results on my iPhone, there is no difference between the left side and the right. Thank you for your help!

    • @ZoomSoundLab

      This is likely a limitation of the app you are using to record (it sounds like to only records in mono).

    • @neve1064
      @neve1064 4 роки тому

      ZoomSoundLab but if there is no pan setting on the U-44, isn’t it logical to think each channel of the U-44 is panned to center?

    • @ZoomSoundLab
      @ZoomSoundLab  4 роки тому

      @@neve1064 The audio is sent as two mono channels, so it is not possible to be panned before it reaches your software. The software may be configured to take inputs 1 and 2 and sum them to a mono mix. With a normal DAW software, you can select input 1 or 2 separately as mono inputs, or select inputs 1-2 as a stereo input.

      ZoomSoundLab Ah, makes total sense. Ok great. So for now, I’m going to livestream from my hardware mixer into your U-44 and from it to my iPhone. Being that and iPhone doesn’t have a control interface like a DAW, I’ll have to live with it as is. In the future though, I’ll use my DAW but in that case, I wouldn’t need the U-44 at all because I could go straight from my DAW to my livestream broadcasting encoder. Well, that’s my theory at least! lol.
