    Does anyone know if the Zoom UAC-232 and Zoom R4 have the same preamps? Seems like for the same price or-- at most-- twenty bucks more, someone looking for a 32 bit float USB audio interface might as well opt for the ability to additionally have a 4-track field recorder with a mic.

    Good review. 32 bit float is the train that all companies are going to be riding on for the next few years, and I agree with you that people should still learn to set their gain properly.

    32 bits floating point is objectively better.
    I do this for a living, but it's still is better period. You are certain to not clip unless you want to, basically. There are also some scenarios that can happen : Hi-Z inputs on interfaces like this do not usually have the headroom to take very very hot pick-ups, for example.
    Using a device like this do NOT prevent you from learning how to set gain.
    Using a device like this prevent you from mistakes anyone can make, especially in live recording situations. I don't know why people push against it. I've always found Zoom products to be exceptionally reliable; I still use my R16/24 professionally for small on-location concert recordings, believe it or not. Great result, stability is perfect. Behringer can eat my shit at this price point. Zoom is the most underrated company in audio IMHO.

      This unit actually does NOT have gain controls....so...ummm...yeah...this might actually get in the way of learning how to use gain.
      And while it might be perfect for YOU in what YOU are doing, 32 bit float is NOT actually objectively better.
      The use of this requires many different things to be in place for it to actually work...and all for the ability to clip?
      Why bother?
      It has its uses, but this...aint it

    Is it correct to say that 32-bit float only works for recording? What about livestreaming: how do you adjust the levels then? Can the output of this interface be used with OBS?

    For videographers and film makers or for people doing unscripted podcasts 32bit float is a GODSEND! Especially for one man outfits like me where I'm the DoP, Director, Gaffer, Sound Engineer ... not having to worry about clipping is amazing.
    I just wish I had bought a 32bit float recorder when I replaced my old Tascam Dr40 with a DR40x after I broke it. I have access to the safety track feature where I can record the same audio to a second file at a much lower gain and that HAS saved my but on a few occasions but wiht 32bit float I wouldn;t have to worry about that at all.
    Not sure how useful 32bit float is in a controlled environment.
    I'm doing sound design and foley for a client's short film right now. Their sound guy didn't show up so the producer ended up subbing in ... on top of having takes with bad enviromental noise (loud motorcycles passing buy) and other issues like bad mic placement and no room treatment so tons of reverb there was TONS OF CLIPPING! 32bit float would have really saved their bacon.

    Thanks for the review! I agree with you about the zoom preamps. However, 32 bit floating-point is not just more headroom. It’s a wider dynamic range - 1528 dB, to be exact. By comparison, 24 bit fixed-point offers 144 dB of dynamic range. This is why there’s no need to set levels with 32 bit float.

    • @CzornyLisek
      @CzornyLisek 9 місяців тому

      I just love how people use "dB" in most meaningless way : p
      Like somehow 32 bit can record 1528dbSPL while 24bit 144dBSPL. And what when we record in 1-bit SDS? ;)
      And those recorders output 32 float files don't actually record anything in it. They use two 32bit ADC with different gains.

    ZOOM UAC-232 utilizes an interesting but not new idea of 2 ADCs with different gain preamps, and nothing regarding 32b float. The idea came from the industrial design and its drawback is well-known - a poor linearity due to nearly impossible to match gains vs ADCs switching level. The same problem with ZOOM UAC-232, the interface has the THD level(-90db@1k) like your laptop built-in audio 3.5mm jack or even worse. At the same time, the top ADC chip ES9822 has THD 200x times less with 125db(A) of the dynamic range, which is more than enough for everything you may need.

    Most pro music people and studio's use a Mac ! Try using pro software. Headphones during recording are for keeping place in a song. Not the recorded file. What we want is a clean recording ! If the full band is in the room, headsets might not be used at all like U2 ?

    I often have trouble with the dynamics of my voice in recordings for my videos, I get loud and then get real quiet and I've had difficulty in the past with clipping and having to re-record things at different gain settings to get things right and this seems like the perfect solution to that problem. Though I think I'll wait to see what other 32-bit float interfaces pop up this year before I bite the bullet.

    Another headphone issue that may be an issue for others is that the output is very low especially if they want to drive professional headphones. The specs seem a bit low for monitors as well, so people would have to turn up their monitors a great deal to match what they got from a previous interface. As for the headphones, there may be need for a separate headphone amp.

    Thank you for the detailed review! Sorry if it's kind of obvious, but I'd love to know: Does 32-bit float through the UAC-232 provide preak protection for any recording equipment connected to it? For example, I have an sE Electronics mic with an XLR cable and a Boss Katana amp through its Line Out (with an unbalanced, mono TRS cable) both connected to my current interface. Would connecting both things to this interface with the same cables provide peak protection to both signals at the same time (when using a compatible DAW)? If so, it'd be an insanely powerful tool for any project really.

    • @DarkCornerStudios
      @DarkCornerStudios  Рік тому +1

      Sadly no...unless the hardware is already capable...and perhaps just "switched off"
      32bit Float is both hardware and software dependent...

    • @danielgaudet6114
      @danielgaudet6114 Рік тому +1

      If you are talking about recording audio and encoding it into 32-bit float, then it's dependent on the ADC hardware (Analog-to-Digital Converter) that's responsible which isn't something that can be upgraded in software. If a unit came with an ADC that supports it, but wasn't enabled, then it's possible, at least on paper, to upgrade one such unit. Most interfaces today do not come with 32-bit float capable ADCs.
      Also, most 32-bit float recording interfaces come with multiple preamps for each channel, where the level (loudness) of the audio being recorded determines which preamp gets used (and usually a combination of two at certain ranges). For example, the newly released RØDE NT1 5th gen, which supports 32-bit float, has 4 separate preamps. This is to setup each preamp to its sweet spot to provide the best signal to noise level at different levels.
