How have I not seen your channel before?? Fellow C70-shooting MTB creator here 👋 I've always loved your work, Scott. Instant subscribe.
Thanks man! We'll have to connect one of these days! Thanks for the sub.
I’m nowhere near being able to optimize gear like this, but it is amazing to know what is out there. Great review Scott!
Thanks a lot Ryan! Fun to craft up cool rigs.
Great review! Seems like a super useful piece of kit for the cablecam.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for some great info on the run/stop cable, I assumed I could use any USB-C withour the emarker chip in it but Tilta have their own specific run/stop with the little electronic block in the middle. My head scratching is over after watching this.
On a side note, it's not the RF mount that has flex, it is the plastic lenses. RED use RF mounts on cinema cameras and they are made for follow focus, if you use cine lenses they sit perfectly snug with no flex, but photo lenses flex a lot more because they're not specifically designed for filming. 👍
Yeah it's a bit tricky having to use their specific cable. And it is in fact the RF mount. I have a Komodo X with a locking RF mount and the same lens has no play. But yes, cine lenses are the best route for sure.
All lenses will have at least some play if they are not secured at the front end. You will see this more with some mounts, but it’s nearly impossible to eliminate.
The best way to reduce it is to utilize a lens mount and strap it down; use a locking matte box; or best option… secure the motor directly to the lens itself.
The latter can be achieved by paying a ridiculous price for a custom made lens-motor mount, or you can build one yourself (if you’re handy).
It’s by far the best option, as the motor being attached to the lens means there is no torque put on the lens mount.
Could you do a breakdown of your lighting setup for this video? Really digging the way the light looks.
Cheers, thank you. Pretty simple lighting setup. 120d as key with softbox/grid and small light panel behind me on the opposite side as a kicker. Flagged a bit to prevent spill on the background.
Thanks Scott. I appreciate the breakdown. Really enjoy your outdoor AND indoor work. The mountain bike videos are outstanding. @@ScottBell
I've only used my og Nano like 5 times, mostly because of the micro usb cable and weird internal battery issues. I might go for this new version though
You'll have to give it a go!
@@ScottBell I did get a good impression when we shot last, already impressed🙌
Thanks for a really nice review! Can you please put a link to that Tilta run/stop cable that works with C70?
Cheers, thanks for watching. Sorry it took me a bit to reply, was waiting to hear from Tilta to make sure I refered you to the correct cable. tilta.com/shop/usb-c-run-stop-cable/?aff=Scott@scottbellvisuals.com
@@ScottBellthank you 😊
Is there a Tilta handle that will work with the new motor, I would like to control zoom for reframing on my Canon RF Glass plus C70. So one motor, One left handle with run/Stop and Zoom control. Good review thanks
Hey, thanks for watching. They have released a side handle here (affiliate link): tilta.com/shop/nucleus-nano-ii-control-handle/?aff=Scott@scottbellvisuals.com
Thanks for the review! When using with a cable cam, the operator and camera are going to be far apart, will the focus controls work?
The focus motor has a range of around 300ft line of site so if you position yourself in the middle of the line you can get up to 600 ft of cable cam distance.

Thanks for the good info!
Would you know how well this works with the GH5? I'm asking because I'm thinking of picking one up. Thanks for your informative videos.
Hey, it will work fine but won't work well with Panasonic lenses since they are focus by wire.
Thank you for sharing the review, also I've got same EF lens adapter issue for using Tilta nano(1st version).
I have some questions about your lens kit, sigma 18-35 and canon 15-35 for mtb shooting, which one do you prefer? is 15-35 AF working well in your shooting situation?
Thanks for watching. I started with the Sigma 18-35 but felt the need for IS in my lens to match the run-and-gun nature of most of my shooting. I was getting micro jitters in my footage when I moved from the GH5 with IBIS to the Canon C70 when using the Sigma. I rarely use AF for mtb shooting but do appreciate it when doing talking-to-camera stuff for UA-cam or if I'm filming an interview. AF with the Sigma is too noisy if you are doing face track. So all that to say, the Sigma has mostly been on the shelf for the last few years, but it does perform a lot better with a follow focus than the RF photo glass.
@@ScottBell Thanks alot! So using af of 15-35 in normal situation(like interview or run&gun) is appropriate, but shooting mtb or extreme situation is not that good, right? I also used Panasonic S1 with IBIS. But since using bmpcc and c70, jittering and shaking is always big problem
Hey, when you do the auto calibration, does the motor force the lens very hard? Because nucleus M is notorious for destroying focus rings and mounts 😅
I didn't find it was particularly forceful but I can't say for sure with all lenses.
No, it doesn't, unless you max out the torque setting and voltage feed.
Great video...thanks! Have you been able to update the firmware? It appears from Tiltas site there are issues. Overall I have found the unit is buggy on the Ronin RS3 Pro and the C70.
Cheers, thanks a lot for watching. I have successfully updated the hand unit firmware but the motor seems to get stuck at 2%. I haven't tried again lately. One thing Tilta told me is that connecting to wifi over a hotspot on your phone seems more reliable than to your wifi router.
Update worked for me, although none of the features for which I bought the II actually enabled afterwards.
Thanks for this video! I have the same system and camera but can't get the run/stop cable to work. Tried all the "canon camera" settings in the Tilta hand unit but nothing works. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hey, thanks for watching. Are you using the run/stop cable that came with the Nano II or did you buy the one I have linked in the description? It will not work with the one that comes with the Nano II.
@@ScottBell thanks for the reply! I was using the cable you had linked but I got it to work by updating the Nucleus motor firmware.
@@eriksmith2271 Glad you solved it!
Can the zoom function be used in a standalone manner?
Or does it only work if there is a focus motor and a zoom motor?
You can use them independently of one another.
Does the run/stop cable connect from the motor to the camera? If so, can you link it here?

Hello, Scott - Thanks for the video and all the useful information! I'm just in the process to build a suitable shoulder rig around my C70 (preferrably with the nucleus nano II handgrip) and especially the start/stop function was an issue for me. I have just one question, if I may - When you mentioned the special cable in the video, you showed the packaging with a picture of a cable with two usb-c connectors. When I use your link, the Tilta homepage shows a cable with one usb-c connector and a 3,5mm jack on the other end, and now I'm confused :-) Maybe you can help me out?
Thanks and best regards - Mike
Hey, thanks for watching. The link is in the video description to the cable I'm using from Tilta. You also need to make sure you update the firmware on the Nano ii. Hope that helps.
@@ScottBell Hi again, thanks for the quick answer! Sorry, still a little confused, your video and the link show different products. Long story short: Where does the cable connect on the C70? Does it go into the USB-C port, or the "remote" port?
@@Fotoschmied Ah I see why you are confused. There is no way for me to directly link to the USB-C version on their site, but click the USB-C option from the link and it will be the correct one as far as I know. USB-C to USB-C, not USB-C to remote. Hope that helps.
@@ScottBell Very helpful, you cured my confusion 😀 Of course this specific cable isn't available here in good old germany, so now I have to wait for the import... Anyway, thanks a lot! This will definitely make a difference for me. 👍
@@ScottBell I'm sorry to bother you again, but I'm stuck and seem to be completely lost. I finally managed to get the cable, it's connected to the motor, the motor is powered from a powerbank, the firmware of the handle is updated to the latest available version 1.23, but whatever I do, I cannot get start/stop working. Remote is enabled in the C70, it's working just fine on my DJI RS3 Pro, so I must have missed something absolutely simple and stupid, and I cannot figure it out. Also tried to connect the cable directly to the handle, this also doesn't do anything. I HOPE I just missed something...
The connection between the nano 2 and sony camera is so bad it’s unusable unfortunately had to return it
That's a bummer to hear. Hopefully things improve with some firmware.
Agreed. This was released months ago and many parts of the system still don't work properly if at all. The ability to input your own lens is still in very early stages. The A/B function only works sometimes. I think of returning it every day!
