One big tip I love is to map "AF LOCK" to button 12 instead of using the hard switch. It will allow for a quick enable/disable of the AF while in continuous mode and allow for a similar workflow without needing to rock the lens with a hard switch.
Yep doing the exact same thing on all the Canon cinema camera’s I have and had in the past.
That's a great tip! Thanks for sharing Aaron. I might have to try that. I just have my muscle memory trained so much from doing it manually it might take a little time to get used to it! haha
@@GriffinConway np! Since both the c70 and C300/500 have a button on the front I like to assign it on both in the same spot, so it's kinda on the lens side so it's easy to press while holding the lens. I would recommend giving it a try, since the hard switches aren't really designed for constant use and might fail prematurely.
I do this as well but I map it to button 7 so that it is within easy reach of my thumb.
Love it, dude! It’s always valuable getting to see how other film makers are setting up and using their cameras 👌🏼
We just bought a C70 - this was super helpful. Thanks for taking the time! 😊
Super helpful Griffin! These tips have helped me smooth out the rough edges when shooting talent or clientele, without so much menu searching. Thanks so much man!
Awesome Joey! Glad to help!
Thanks for the tips! The smooth aperture tip is CLUTCH! Just got your LUT pack. Going to give it a try! Appreciate you sharing your knowledge!
Extremely helpful; thank you so much. I just bought a C70 a few days ago and this will save me a lot of time and stress.
Duuuuuude I only wish you posted this a week earlier! I've been on a project all week with two C70's and every day I've been tweaking the settings daily. I've got one more shoot day tomorrow, gonna have these bodies perfected! haha
The C70 is in the mail and I just picked up your LUT pack. Thanks for the great info you’ve been putting out about the camera 🍻
Good no nonsense video! Lots of useful info.
Just ordered this with EF adapter and Ronin RS2. Thinking 4K will be viable for long time to come. Still even use old 1DC. C70 is more of what I had hoped the 1DC would have been.
so helpful!! Thanks Griffin! Just picked up my c70 this week!
Nice video. Understated and knowledgable.
One tip: if you get both ef/rf adapters, the .71 version and the basic one, you will effectively increase your lens ranges if you need to go longer or shorter. Big value add and can be quickly swapped out on site if needed. Saves on carrying loads of lenses. I used to do that when shooting with my BlackMagic MFT camera with a metabones and a straight adapter.
I have a question about theffectively
Brilliant. Best vid on the C70 I’ve seen yet.
Thanks a lot Jake!
Nice tips 👍 I like to use the small AF frame instead of the large. Makes it a lot easier to actually know what you focus on 😎
Hey Griffin, thanks a lot this video has been really helpful. Picked up your luts as a way to say thank you, cant wait to use them in an upcoming project!
Thanks so much Oscar! I appreciate the support!
That was just AMAZING. Thanks so much for those tips, I just subscribed haha. I do like the digital stabilization on one of the direct buttons, as it comes in handy when you are handheld. Peace!
Love this and your content, thanks so much!
Wow, Canon really doubles down on that magenta tint for their LUT as well. Great work on these tips!
Great tips here. I'd add a couple if I may ...
1) When transitioning from inside to outside, try using the Auto Iris function with fine increment engaged. Unfortunately, if you're using EF lenses with an adapter, this feature only works with a few lenses... notably the Canon EF 85mm 1.4 L IS. Oddly enough though, all the EF-S zoom lenses work with it too. But most EF lenses don't.
You could also use Auto ISO, but this isn't ideal and doesn't work in C-Log... typical Canon cripple here.
2) I too occasionally switch focus to manual, but I do it on the camera with a custom button near my thumb. I find doing it with the lens switch generally incurs a bit of jolt in your footage. EDIT... looks like a few people have already suggested this.
Useful video for new C70 owners. Thanks Griffin.
:)
Never knew about the Fine Increment setting...awesome stuff. Thanks.
Awesome! Glad you got something out of the video! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for all the great tips! There are some real Lifesavers in there for me that I didn’t even know about.
Good tips. Love that fine iris setting. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips! I've been loving the camera, only real issue for me is the autofocus. I was using the 1DX MK II for video until I bought the C70 and the 1DX's autofocus was more usable in real world situations IMO - which is crazy because the 1dx came out in 2016. The C70 really struggles with AF if you are underexposed at all or even if your subject has a darker complexion. Hopefully canon might be able to address it with a firmware upgrade but I'm not holding my breath.
Nice walkthrough Griffen! I've got custom button 7 set as the AF lock which is an easy way to take over manually while waiting for the tracking to lock back on.
I borrowed this idea from you Matt!
Best video advice for this camera
Great tips and example footage!
Been using backup tracks for years…great useful tip.
Helpful and to the point. Thank you!
Hey there! Fantastic video! I've been taking it all in. Look forwards to more tips with the C70.
Thank you. Are you using an adapter? Is the camera firmware updated? Is it a canon branded lens or third party one?
@@GriffinConway Firmware is updated, I'm using both canon branded and Rokinon Xeen's, and an RF to EF adapter
Another Banger Video, I've been really enjoying my C70 and I usually shoot with Sigma Art Primes and Rokinon Xeen "CF" cine lenses ... if you were going to buy 1 Native RF lens for cam which one would you buy?
I have one on order. Can't wait!
Bro thank you for this. LOVE your videos. I do video for a living and sometimes feel like an imposter because I’m guessing on my settings and because these cameras are so good now a days they do an amazing job making me look like I know what I’m doing 😂. So thank YOU for these tips. Super helpful.
Helpful info as usual - thanks Griffin.
Thank you Curtis!
This is how you know Griffin is legit when Curtis Judd is a fan. Always appreciate what both of you guys put out. Thanks!
@@davbunjr Thanks David - Griffin is legit in his own right 👍
I always enjoy your content man. Keep it up!
Thanks a lot! Let me know if you have any videos you would like to see in the future!
@@GriffinConway I’ve been dying to see someone use the C70 with the Loawa 24mm Probe Lens and do a side by side with and without the 0.71x focal reducer, lol... super specific, I know. Otherwise, just seeing it used in a film setting (like a short film or something).
Great 10 tips Vlog, the C70 seems like a wonderful video camera thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching Tony! I appreciate it. And ya, I have been loving the c70 so far!
Always like your videos. Bought two C70 cameras today to go with our C300MKIII and decided against r5c. Bough your LUT and I am looking forward to comparing it to the Canon LUT.
The c70’s are so good now especially with the new firmware. Stoked to hear that you got two more!
Thanks man, i‘ll come back to this video once i‘ll get my C70 😊
Fabulous and very helpful. Thank you.
Awesome video! Thanks
Great info. Bought your LUTs right away
So helpful!! Thank you!!
Hey man! Why'd you flip me off at 02:28? JK. Love this video. I don't have a C70 but I really like watching your breakdown of settings, tips, and rigging guides. Have a good day and be safe!
😂😂 my bad. Thanks for watching!
Awesome channel !! Great info
For the LUT on-off, did you replace the LUT in-camera for this, or is that the one in-camera? Absolutely SO much information and amazing tip here, thank you so much!
Hi Griffin, I'm about to buy the C70 to record UA-cam Videos and Online Classes. I'm wondering what lens should I get first, the RF 15-35mm of the RF 28-70mm ? Your channel has been extremely helpful in my research process, you've gained a sub 🙌
Great tips Griffin 😁 am i right to say that you could just use the proxy recordings instead of changing the recording function (9:20 ) to use them clips for your socials ❓
Can you do a demonstration using the touch AF? Would love to see you make decisions mid shot between touch, Face only, bracket. I haven't seen a YT video that shows the operator using the camera. They just show the footage.
BRO - I just purchased your luts and ManE oh MANE!!! I actually love the Death Valley!! Question - how do you reassign the frame rate - not sure what option to do so within the menu?
Awesome. Just got to get the camera now 😬
Great video!
Good tips, thanks! I'm wondering about the switch to slow-mo. Do you have a quick way to adjust the exposure accordingly or how do you do it? As visible in your video, the exposure drops when you switch from 24fps to 120fps. I have the same setting on button 10, but since the shutter angle is 180°, this would mean that the shutter speed changes from 1/48 to 1/240, thus dropping the exposure.
Thanks for the ND tip, Griffin! I would have had a crippled C70 without watching this, man. It's so weird that they set the default to 6 stops and you have to manually turn on the extra two stops.
I hope this message finds you well. I really enjoy your straight to the point content filled videos. I try to do that on my channel too. I have really been enjoying your C70 videos and your comparison to the C200 is what led me to switch cameras. So thank you. Do you have preview images of each one of your LUTs and in the description you say that they are for CLOG2 only and there are versions for the R5, but the R5 doesn't shoot in Clog 2, so maybe you meant there are CLOG3 LUTs for the R5?
Hey John, thanks for the kind words. The luts are for clog 2 only right now. I shoot 8k raw on the on the R5 and interpret it as clog 2 in premiere or resolve. Thanks for watching!
Great Video Griffin can you do one on the best cinema settings for the C70 and how to import you LUT's into the camera...Thanks
I think I will do the importing luts video super soon
2:27 Up yours, too!
Great vid.
Nice vid Griffin. Thanks for sharing champion.
What lenses are you tending to use on the C70? RF or EF adapted with Canon's .71 "speed booster"? Would you say the lenses you use on it so far have been generally different to what you're regularly using on your C500 mkii - ie photographic vs cinema lenses? What would be your one or two go-to lenses for the C70 atm?
I'm quite invested in EF glass from newer Canon EF glass to ie Zeiss and Contax Zeiss more vintage glass. I wouldn't give up the Contax Zeiss, but would consider trading up all the other EF glass for RF if the benefits were pretty stellar. I do however love having a "speed booster" so to speak with my EF glass over shooting w a Super 35 crop w an RF lens - what are your thoughts / prefs / caveats you might be finding with this? IE at the wide end of a 24-70 RF or 28-70 RF? I love to shoot with a 70-200, and don't love switching between say a 24-70 and then pulling out a 16-35 or 15-35 for wide end shots if you know what I mean. That being said is there a prime you tend to use most at the wider end with the C70 or even your C500mkii / or would like to start using etc - considerably so with gimbal work?
Any opinions appreciated.
Cheers mate.
Caine
Hey Griffin, I have just ordered your luts so will test them out with my Canon XF605 Camcorder and report back. I hope they work with Grassvalley Edius. Assuming so. Thanks mate, Regards Martin in Australia
Its interesting how with the Canon Camcorders such as the XF705 that the AF works much better. It's rock solid
Great stuff as usual! I noticed when you use your custom button to change to 120fps mode, your shutter angle stays on 180...? You must have to do that manually?
Great video babe!
Thanks my love ♥️
Great Job
great video. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Extremely helpful. Especially the fine Iris increments. I’m still somewhat stuck on the audio part. I can’t seem to open up input 3/4.
I’m having the same issue. How do you select input 3/4??
Helpful stuff as always! Waiting for the C70 and BMPCC 6K comparison! :)
Coming soon! I have already been working on it :)
@@GriffinConway I'm having a hard time deciding between the C70 / RED Komodo / BMPCC6K Pro (purely on the look & feel of the image + colour science). Hope ur upcoming video will help a lot!
very helpful thx!
hey griffin, thank u so much for this helpful video, but one thing which i like with the c70 is, that u can output a lut via hdmi. why u dont use this feature and add a lut to the external monitor?
Hey Griffin, just refreshing my learnings from some of your prior videos, like this one. Still good stuff. Question: After the RAW LT addition what are your new 1st and 2nd card recording modes, respectively.
Hey Ron! Great question. My recording mode depends on the project. For longer form content, I am still using main card: 4k long gop / 2nd card: proxy. For commercial work where we are shooting less and spending more time grading it, I use Main card: Raw LT / 2nd Card: proxy. Although, I just got an M1 max laptop and it plays h.265 like it is pro res so I am curious about trying out some of the h.265 flavors in the c70 that I have always ignored haha
Thx man!
ABB is my #1 custom menu choice
Great tip on back up audio.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful
Many thanks 😊
Nice tips and thank you for the birdie lol 2:28
Nice work ^^ but may how to setting the 120fps to assignable button tq
Great Video, maybe I Missed it, but what are acceptable sd cards to use for the C-70. Thanks.
Great video man! I definitely learned a lot from it 💯 I’m just stuck choosing between the C70 or C300 mark iii... huh 😫 first world problems 😂🤣
u decide yet?! I cant either
@@pkonttinen No I haven’t 😂
This is very helpful. You mentioned using Luminance vs. Brightness for the LCD screen. How are they different? The manual does not explain it very well. Thanks
Brightness sets black level. Luminance sets the brightness of the LCD's backlight.
This silly nomenclature affects nearly every TV ever made too..... Brightness sets black level, contrast sets white level, and if its an LCD TV the back light setting adjusts how bright the screen will go.
Gracias 🙏
Love the insights, thank you Griffin! I was wondering how you tackle EF lens motor noise while using continuous (tracking) autofocus. Are these situations where you refrain from using a mounted shotgun mic? Or are there any other tricks of the trade you apply?
Thanks Christopher! I use a rode ntg3 and a sanken cs-m1 usually on camera and don't find it to be much of an issue. I think they are a little better at rejecting noise that is not right in front of them. That said, some lenses (like sigma ef lenses) have pretty loud motors, and other ones are much quieter like the canon 24-105 f/4 IS ii
@@GriffinConway Thank you, that's helpful info.
Thanks for the numerous C70 instructional videos, Griffin. I'm a new user of the C70 and have never used a LUT either. Probably a stupid question but if I shoot a scene in CLOG 2 and then put a LUT on it in camera or on the Ninja V, will that scene and LUT transfer to premier pro or other video editors or do I lose the LUT when I load the video up to the editor?
Hey GB, figured I would anser this in the meantime. When you apply a LUT to your LCD monitor or external monitor, it is not applied to the footage you are recording. So the short answer is that when you deliver the footage you will need to reapply a LUT to the Log footage.
first of all, lots of compliments for the video. As a Canon enthusiast for over 30 years I can say I agree with you on everything. I ask you a very simple question: how do you disassemble the wrist strap on the handle? thank you very much a warm greeting
Hey Vito! Thank you. I just take the strap off on the handle because I prefer shooting without it. It can be done pretty easily
@@GriffinConway grazie mille...many thanks...
Hey Griffin, thanks for the autofocus tips at the end. I'm curious how you think the autofocus would hold up in a situation where you are pushing in on a subject that starts in a wide shot, and ends in a close up, say on a gimbal or a dolly. You said use wide bracket for the wide shots and face only for close ups, but would about a shot that essentially has both? Would love to know your thoughts
I would use the whole area af mode in that circumstance. At the time I made this video that mode wasn't available.
So helpful man, just bought this camera to replace my RED haha. Use to be a c100 guy then moved to RED, switch back to Canon.
Awesome glad you liked it! I like reds for some stuff but the gap is much smaller than it used to be for sure
I do same your setting in my C 70💕👌
Great Video. Great tips. Subscribed. Question: if i had to choose one all around lens for this camera, which would it be (for run and gun doc style no gimball....just cam with lens). Guess a zoom, but which one, RF or EF (with booster). Just want 1. Thanx in advance 🙏
Lots of users like the EF 24-105mm F4. With the Canon .71x focal reducer you add a full stop of light, so it’s effectively an f2.8 lens with image stabilization.
@@aaronnelson3091 thanx for the reply. I thought native RF 28-70 would win, but this will save me a lot of money. Thanx again!
respect!
Hi Griffin! Thx for your video. Have you ever tried to compare internal shots with ones that was recorded with Ninja V in prores? Im I'm wondering if prores has a better quality
I have. It's easier for editing but I do find it switches the video levels to "video levels" instead of "full levels" (feel free to look this up, as it is a bit of a complicated topic). It can be undone in Davinci Resolve, but I edit in premiere so I prefer the internal recordings
I know a few people complain about the lack of SDI on the C70 but could you not just the black magic SDI to hdmi converter if needed on set?
Don't know if you will see this after so many months but I have something that could be a dumb question. How did you record your camera settings screen?
Very helpful video btw, thank you so much
Thank you. I used an Atomos ninja v to record my screenoverlays
Can you send out a display signal through the C70's USB port or can you only use the HDMI port for that?
Hi Griffin, it looked like you have a different HDMI signal on your external monitor. How did you set this up in the menu? THX :-)
Great video! Just got the C70... Is the a digital level to know if the camera is balanced on tripod or handheld? How do you manage this?
Awesome. There is no digital level. Most tripods have a bubble level that shows when it is level. For handheld I would say it just takes a bit more practice
Hi my friend do you know where to go to format the sd card in menu canon c70?
Canon LUTS, 100% on the money, actually bought yours just now.
Thanks so much Jonathan!
Great video 👌🏻 Do manual auto focus aid work on non electronic cine lenses?
No they do not, except for the canon CN-E lenses. The focus peaking still works regardless of what lenses you are on.
@@GriffinConway thx for that quick response mate
Great tips👏🏾
Are you still planning to do C70 vs 6kPro vid?
Yes I am! I have already been working on it. Hoping to finish it late next week!
@@GriffinConway Looking forward and thanks! We haven’t found a good comparison video on the two cameras and no doubt you will nail it. Keep up the great work!
Hi there.. I see you have customised a button to show the preview Lut. Is there a way to change the preview Lut from the default one to one of our own choosing? I can load my own Lut but this has to be baked into the footage which I don't want either.. Thanks..
What settings are you mapping for your AF buttons? When I hit the Face AF button to swap I dont see the focus square? Would love to know your button layout for AF
Can i use your luts also as baked in looks and if not, do you have those as well?
Nice video. Whats your process for exposing CLOG 2? Do you go for skintones hitting a particular IRE with false colour etc?
I have a video coming on this exact topic. I don't always have one particular formula for every setting I shoot in.
@@GriffinConway ah nice one! Made the switch to the C70, and trying to get these processes a bit more natural as newer to false color. I'll be tuning in!
How do you set the volume level for CH3 and CH4?
Great video! Can you tell me what setting gives you the large white box at 12:06? It's not frame guides but I don't know of an autofocus mode that gives you that. Thanks
Thanks Erik! It's from the Canon .71x speedbooster. It puts those guides on screen to show what area is available for autofocus.
@@GriffinConway Ahhh!!!! I've seen that pop up in several videos and searched the menus to find what it is!! haha! thanks for clarifying!
