  • It has been announced that the amount of asylum applications waiting to be processed has reached a record high of 175,000, which prompts questions for a government that promised to "stop the boats".
Alexis Conran is joined by Ava Santina and Nick Freeman to discuss whether it could be a ploy to mislead voters.

We have a government that constantly find homes for thousands of Asylum Seekers, yet they appear to lack the same urgency for our own citizens. Those who have paid taxes and helped to build our nation deserve to be housed first and foremost.

Ask the Tories for a break down of the £6 billion a year they say this is costing the taxpayer and how many of their donors and chums that own hotels are profiting very nicely from this. I bet you will not get those figures and these hotels will not house homeless people because the housing benefit does not cover their room rates but hey ho another thing the Tories will not tell people. This is a Tory migration crisis they created it and are using it for political purposes its a distraction from how badly they've managed the country, The cost of Tory crisis, rocketing food and energy costs but hey look over there at that shiny object plus their donors and chums are loving it makes their bank accounts bigger.

Yeah their chums and donors that own hotels are making out like bandits. I wonder what room rate they are charging for housing refugees? I bet its way more than the housing benefits for those areas the Tories are happy to band about the £6 billion a year figure but very sparse on giving out the costing break down of that bill.

Linda supported Nigel Farage and due to Brexit, it's harder to send people back. Well done Linda, you chose what you didn't want. Now we have signed agreements for immigration from out of the EU for workers to fill the gaps, those people that make Linda feel like 'a stranger in her own country' are there because of Linda.

simply brexit has increased immigration and the government and Farage were totally aware of this simple fact

Wow, an Irish caller that think's the English should treat people that come to England with distain. Does he not remember how the Irish were treated by the English? Does he want that attitude again?

With an accent like that, it's hard to believe that Linda is actually from Swansea. Also, Swansea has two universities which provide much needed revenue for a small city and if there are many 'foreigners' walking around there, (which I can't say I have ever noticed) there is a strong probability that they are undergraduate or postgraduate students or maybe staff at the nearby hospital. But she's not a racist...🙄

Alex seems so smart but lacks conviction. Always seems new to to the topic and airy fairy about serious issues.

This is a ridiculous programme with a right wing narrative, even worse when Vine is in the chair.

Thank heavens for Ava Santina being the only talking sense. Clearly someone most me making money out keeping this backlog and also the demonisation of asylum seekers

Ava talks so much sense, she should have her own show. Nick is just jumping on the band wagon of the far right like that vile Farage, Cruella and the crime scene of a government running this country.

She sounds like she talks sense, but let's breakdown her inaccuracies :
      1. UK isn't the only one struggling with asylum processing. Usa, Germany, Canada, France etc.
      - the woman on the call was right, yet ava reduced it to her just being racist. Do people understand that immigration can cause socio economic issues in communities? It's not only UK, south africa, India just to name a few. Again ava wrong there
Nick is actually on point with the facts:
      - excessive immigrantion is an issue for any country. A lot like to say people who oppose uncontrolled immigration are racists, forgetting immigration does actually cause socioeconomic issues.
      - immigration system especially when recognised as an asylum claimant, you will receive accommodation, food vouchers and limited weekly funds. Now this delay allows a lot to create a life here, sometimes children which then is used in courts during appeal processes. Now every case will be different
      - at the time of the show, Albania made the biggest percentage of these illegal immigrants arriving by boat
      - nick mentioned UK has limited number of resources and they are being stretched. And that's fact. Iv worked in local authorities and NHS, trust me-- local authorities struggling with housing, social services waiting list long until you get allocated a social worker, NHS appointments forget it. Even signposting services, they are at brim
      - if asylum claimants didn't have suprt with accommodation, food, and weekly allowance no matter how small, it would discourage a lot. Nick is right about UK being a safe place to seek asylum.
      - I mean remember there was a case in London where homeless people were being discharged and asylum seekers being offered rooms. Can't remember which local authority it was exactly
