- With inflation once again rumoured to be on the rise, reports say that the government could be looking at cutting benefits in order to cut inflation.
Ann Widdecombe says this is just scare mongering but Owen Jones thinks it's a very real possibility.

Tories: High streets are struggling, what can we do?
Also Tories: Let's squeeze wages and cut social security so nobody has any money!
Wonder if the two might be related? 🤔
Anyone would think they wanted a riot.
It’s not benefits or wages driving inflation. Even the IMF have said it’s those at the top and price gouging.
Don't tax rich companies but cut benefits, what has this country become ? I'm glad my parents didn't live to see this.
It's always been the way. It's not new.
Ultra rich along with that monarchy continue to enjoy their unearned billions. They do not pay any taxes and leech off all. Propaganda will not work anymore we all see thievery in broad daylight
4 million kids in poverty and there are people talking about cutting benefits to stem inflation. Benefit recipients are not buying needless luxuries or putting it all on the credit card and splashing out private yachts.
This is heinous.
@@chrissilver7719Lee Anderson said they all eat mcdonalds so why should i pay more tax for that?
@@alfsmith4936 Ah, yes, 30p Lee is the paragon of honesty, right? Let's not forget he called one of his friends outside their door and told them to pretend they don't know him. He also claimed no nurses in his constituency earns so little they need to come to food banks but even if they do, it's because of bad budgeting
You wouldn't have to pay more tax, if they introduced a wealth tax they could fund it easily and stop child poverty, which would reduce a lot of the caseload for the NHS, because it's easier to get sick if you're malnourished
How many times must the poor be penalised for being poor?
It's not like they do anything about it..
@@alfsmith4936 What can they do?
The government ensure the poor are kept under the jackboot because the government has its own private army to crush any uprising.
However, that said, it seems the British are intolerant of the wrong issues.
Migrants rather than their own imposed miseries and misfortunes.
@@Dylanesque Exactly.
@@Dylanesque Most people are blinded, distracted and gaslit into thinking it's refugees fault. Tory rags and TV spew this bile all day every day. This is a problem that could be sorted with ease by having safe routes and adequate processing. But it's more than a convenient distraction have 100s of thousands interned.
Who is they? The poor or the government? The poor do what they can. The government does nothing. @@alfsmith4936
With this conservative government anything is possible
Cutting benefits does not ever cut inflation. If anything giving people more benefits reduces inflation as the benefits are spent directly in the economy. They are cost neutral and keep the economy moving.
Which brings us to trinkle down economics. It's all just utter bullshit. Again and again...

They treat us with such contempt.

Anne is a Conservative and thus i know what to expect from her. Jones on the other hand is a different kettle of fish altogether. Indeed this so called socialist hates Britain and loath's the working class. Moreover all the people on the left and right who i respect including George Galloway a real socialist to a man despise Jones and for good reason
Because she has nothing meaningful to say otherwise!
There are few people who personify hatefulness quite as much as Widdecombe

Ann Widdecombe is complete and utter nuts.
I don’t doubt for a second that this is what the tories intend to do. I also don’t doubt that this programme will have scared people witless.
Agreed! I know people who hearing this already on the edge, scaring people for views! Reckless people !will take their own lives , though i'm sure these lot wiould be quite happy,,,,1 less to pay out too
It's nice to be told because I won't read the Times and the Torys are putting it out there, to test the waters with their base. If people don't get told and, they can't do anything about it and we will have a rerun of the mid 2000s, when thousands of disabled people died early, due to welfare reforms.
I agree with you. I also don’t doubt for a moment they really DO want to drag us out of the ECHR. Then we won’t even have a vote to get rid of them. We’ll be feudal serfs
It wouldn't surprise me in the least if this government did cut benefits so they could cut taxes on the wealthy. I know a refugee from Ukraine who has worked all her life and now cannot work because she is waiting for a hip replacement. She says, because food and energy, the largest items of expenditure for people on benefits, is so much more expensive in the UK, people on the breadline in the UK are actually worse off than they would be in her home country. This is a disgrace for a country which rates itself as the sixth wealthiest country on the planet. Just waiting for some bigoted ignoramus to say that she should consider returning to a battle-scarred war zone!
Why oh why do TV Channels keep wheeling out Widdecombe ? Who do they think she is ? Who cares what she thinks ?
Need to find the few people soulless enough to spread right wing bullshit for money.
Most of them are on Talk TV or GB News, where they won't get called out on having no facts.
I was thinking the opposite why do they give Jones air time.
maybe the channels want us to stop voting tory, and they think she is as good as a scarecrow? I think she is the one who is anxious to come on TV, because she is quite full of herself.
Widdecombe, the woman who famously declared herself a virgin, lived with her mother her whole life and hopes that science will one day offer a cure for gays, who better to ask an opinion from?
And who CONVERTED voluntarily to Catholicism, and who wants to see women stay at home to raise children. A less appropriate person to talk about the current state of modern society and economics it would be hard to conceive.Utterly clueless and invited to speak on these channels far too often.
Ask Ann will she donate all her wealth to charity for one year
Norman from kent is an absolute legend, you tell em, ann can roll her eyes as much as she wants but she has an opportunity to speak all the time on national platforms and say nothing but spiteful rubbish
Almost half of people on benefits work full time already. Then a large percentage are sick and disabled. There are now over 7 million people in pain waiting for operations due to the Tory created NHS backlog. And we're in a cost of living crisis. I wouldn't put it past the Tories doing it though.
Another couple of million immigrants to add to the ten million that have already made their home in Britain over the last twenty years will no doubt ease the backlog
@@johnlewis9158Alright Alf Garnett.
@@johnlewis9158 Nonsense numbers. And even then the UK was built on immigration and the NHS and other services rely on it.

Your figures are wayyyy off the mark.
There are only 12 million dwellings in Britain and barely any new social housing has been built in 13 years of Tory Austerity.
So where are these 10 million living huh?

At least the Royals got a 45% increase so they are going to be fine!
The royals pay a ton of tax and our taxes are cheaper because of them.

Yes, I was worried.
Maybe we could take some from the richest for a change?
No mention that benefits have almost NO impact on inflation . Corporate Greed is the biggest problem.
Maybe cut bankers and CEO's bonuses. Billions being hended to these crooks.
These Tories are pure evil.
Should we implement a winfall tax on banks like other countries.
Torys: lift cap on bankers bonus you say and let them have a uncapped pensin pot you say
Wage rises and benefits fuel inflation apparently, but massive corporate profits don't?
Wage hikes and benefit hikes do create inflation because wage hikes are payed for by pushing up the price of goods to the customers, benefits hike are payed for by more taxation on income tax and business revenue which again passes onto the consumer through price hikes to cover the loss.
Corporate profits arnt related unless they exploit the customers just through greed price hikes
@@si-hv3nu
Utter tripe.
Corporate profits are more likely to be held in accounts amassing interest for the individual investors rather than being circulated back through the UK economy.
During the pandemic the richest 1% in British society bought two things.
Properties abroad at auction, mostly repossessions and luxury items that were not made in the UK. Italian goods such as high ticket items, Sports cars, watches, handbags topped the list along with properties all spiked in sales during that period.
Low income or middle income wealth was redistributed back into the UK economy through supermarkets, paying household bills, mortgages, taxes and British high st goods all of which stay within the British economy.
You fail to even define wage hikes in which sector?
Public or private?
I doubt you understand the difference or which sector of the treasury that benefit payments are tied into.
Private sector increases inflation because it provides goods and services of which the products can be inflated to align with their workers pay rises.
Public sector does not produce goods, therefore it does not affect inflation to anywhere near the same degree.
And as consumers they lack the purchasing power of middle income earners who work in the private sector.
Low income earners or those in receipt of benefit allowance that fall under the public sector in the treasury budget such as nurses do NOT produce mass produced goods obviously and low income or the poorest in society are not casting their wealth (lack of) to foreign countries buying overseas imports or even purchasing expensive British goods. They are generally living hand to mouth.
@@ljt3084 everything I've said is bang on. What the richest spend their money on is their business as it is with anyone else. Yes if they buy something from abroad it does send money overseas just as the low earner may buy eg a tshirt from overseas online does, or if business buys stock from abroad everyone imports.
Yes you do get legal offshore accounts tax haven and shares investment for people to protect some of their earnings from government theft through Extortion
Which is arguably immoral when everyone else in the private sector is paying full taxes but redistribution of wealth policies are arguably immoral too due to theft through Extortion Slavery through coercion taking people property rights but that's a different subject.
Back to the topic at hand the most part I agree with you on most of what you said.
And your right the "public sector produce nothing" and their for make zero tax revenue even its workers wages & their income tax first had to be taxed off the private sector, in the first place same with benefits so yes increasing public sector wages and benefits means a need for more taxation or more national debt of which will have to be payed with private sector income taxation later, ether way more tax on the public sector means inflation of what the private sector selling to cover the tax increases. Governments create inflation with bad policy eg
• sanctions on Russia led to lower
supply on gas and oil inflating it's
price and the knock on affects on
to transport industry and goods
passed onto the customer
• free movement immigration
Led to 10million population
increase over past 20yrs meaning
high demand on buying and renting
homes inflating prices.
• covid lockdown wage payouts
Add to national debt meaning devaluation of the pound and a need for more taxation on the private sector whom pass it on to the consumer through inflation of prices on goods
yes I imagine some corporate
business have took the piss seeing
an opportunity increase profits
Etc etc
I'm not say benefits and public sector wage hikes are the cause of everything I just say they are something which contribute to inflation in general
the government did it to me self-employed needed help 3 months in to the year hellp they cut my benefits of. sold my business sole trader to pay my rent i am a criminal and i have to survive to live..🇬🇧.

The right wingers do that all the time on this show. They do it because it kills time and they are losing the argument.

Because the poor can't afford to fight back.

Cut MP's wages ,stop paying their expenses, stop them having second jobs ,make them acountable stop banks and corporate companies earning billions in bonuses and everyone could live a reasonable life

Benafits arent causing inflation.
Why don't we cut the government benefits
Yes. If people cannot afford to eat or heat their homes they will die off and won't be driving up the cost of essentials so inflation will drop
The Tories will just be hammering another nail into their own coffin.
Tories out!
If they want to curb inflation and get the public finances on a more sustainable footing they are going to have to look at wealth taxes and closing the loopholes that allow the wealthiest in society to evade their responsibilities. Those with the broadest shoulders can, and indeed should, be asked to make a greater contribution. That will help bring inflation down. Also, benefits as they currently stand, are woefully inadequate to provide even the most basic protection against poverty and destitution. They need to be increased to a decent standard if anything.
Brilliant again thanks Ann and Owen for your great 👍 opinions Paul
Thanks 4 your reply Paul
This is clickbait. No way would that touch inflation. It doesnt even make economic sense when inflationis being driven by profits not wages.
Also, the language enables hostile feeling...this is Social Security, not 'Benefits' .
Could cut the Royals money as they do not need any not the normal people that cannot afford the money to be cut
Hitting the weak and those who have no strength to oppose is always the tory way. Also does it not show what a low state the contry is in if the government has to cut wealfare benefits to the poorest in this country, how desperate a condition is the economy in for this to have to happen.
Those who may think the tories would not do this, of course they would!. Look what they are doing to all the other essential public resources NHS, Police, child protection (non existent) mental health, etc.
Also keep an eye on the news and papers for stories of how "bennefit cheats are on the rise" and how "those on benefits are living the high life or spending all their money on booze and drugs and take-aways", when you see this being reported then you know it's going to happen!

Any issue, Tories go to blame trope: benefits claimants
Inflation is mostly from the price of fuel, the over all cost has dropped but not for the person paying for it at the end, the prices have stayed the same... I don't know would it be right to say ex Tory Ministers are high up oil companies boards and help dictate the prices... Like Amber Rudd, well yes, it's not as if oil companies have given the government as in MPs and ministers over 40 million over the past 4 years, it's not as if the government this use this to collect more tax via VAT.. lastly it's not as if the battle axe left the Tory party to help make a new one, since polls now show the party she moved too will be lucky to get 5 seats, shes back to pulling the Tory line... And people say she's not in it for the money
It would raise it
instead of cutting benefits for the poor... why not tax the rich?
The receipt of benefits is not the cause of the current inflationary situation.
A single mum with two kids near me gets £3000 a month in net income. It makes you wonder why anyone bothers to work.
Really?? None of the benefits claimants I worked with, some single with kids, was getting that sort of money. You have to explain what and why she is getting this. It sounds like an urban legend to me.
Ann Widdecombe 😂 ,I have to laugh .....it's better the raging at her .

@@grahamlees4394 it will be means tested by my retirement. My generation are propping up pensioners due to their propensity to vote Tory, nothing more.
@edwardscrase6136 because means testing usually involves bringing in a third party private company to do it.
Plus pensioners reaching pension age now are already getting screwed over and they have no idea. The likelihood of inheriting a deceased spouses pension is practically zero for anyone reaching pension age withing the last few years. They are also making sure the minimum amount of state pension is just above the threshold to claim pension credit as well which means more people will be struggling as they will be less likely to qualify for things like housing benefits, dental care or free prescriptions.
