As 50 year old who listened to this as a teen, it makes me so happy to see a youngster digging this!
Me to mate
Listen to his vocals and scream at the end of “To Hell with the Devil”. It will blow you away. One of the greatest metal vocalists ever
The Reign has higher vocals.
Stryper - The Way last scream is the beast!!!
And songs like God, take it to the cross and blood from above are just beyond what Michael should be able to do these days
He’s personally my favorite metal vocalist. He has a great way of balancing the metal aggression in his octave screams and he’s one of the few vocalist in any genre that has maybe gotten better with age. Plus he’s one hell of a producer, guitarist and songwriter
For a male singer being able to do that I'd have to agree with you ! 👍
The message and lyrics of Stryper are consistently positive, happy and uplifting. Great rock band.
Underrated.
Michael Sweet is a great voice. The only band my dad would accept. My dad was a minister
You mean No "Petra', 'White Cross', Guardian, Bloodgood, or the Seventh Power either ?
@@michaelblody3053 I was around when Stryper came out and I never heard of those other bands.
Same here...my dad was a pastor!
@@michaelblody3053 Yeah! Of all of the bands listed, Petra and Whitecross were never ashamed of the name of Jesus. They didn’t have a bunch of fence-sitting songs that were hard to tell whether they were secular love songs or actual worship songs. And their leas singers both branched off and totally blew the world away with their messages! Both John Schlitt and Scott Wenzel had encouraging solo albums!
Michael Sweet is definitely one-of-kind! Not even the original lead singer from Petra (Greg X. Volz) could hit the notes Sweet did with such power!
Michael Sweet aged so well. His recent solo albums and Stryper albums are awesome. And what a hell of guitar player he is also!
After the lead singer of Boston committed suicide that they hired Michael Sweet to go and pay the singer for a few of their concerts and everybody who said they saw him Including Alice Cooper said they couldn't believe how much of a rain she was able to do his More Than A Feeling version of Boston song that his voice didn't go down is he with the concert went on and he said that unlike most singers who try to who try to fill those kind of songs where the voice register gets high in it's hard to reach as he did for the lead singer of Boston Michael Sweet was the only person that Alice Cooper had ever heard in concert who could hit the notes that the lead singer of Boston was able to hit and to go through the whole repertoire of of songs and the voice didn't Peter out as the concert went on. And Alice said as far as he was concerned he never he didn't know of any heavy metal singer who had the same range as Michael did or his ability to both play and to he said that that when he saw us Fox and Michael Sweet playing electric guitars off each other going between the Rhythm guitars and the lead guitars and switching back and forth as they did he said he was having trouble keeping up to who was doing which part of the song Because with most times when you have a a rhythm of good guitarist that's all he does is rhythm and then you have the other guy doing the lead or you have the other guy and then it sometimes goes back and forth but with them he said especially in most of their songs it was completely combined it and it just put back between the two so they could be playing a solo where the other one who begins a solo and then the other one but either finish it or sometimes they would they would change it up depending if they were in concert or something. Alice was very impressed. As was I hearing that.
@@charliebrownie4158wow, thanks for that! How cool.
I like how she can't help herself and breaks out with a smiles the whole time. Lovely.
It was adorable!!
Stryper are hands down my favorite band of all time. The lead vocalist, Michael Sweet, has an almost unlimited range even to this day. They are bigger now than ever. I recommend you checkout some of their more recent releases.
Have you heard the last 2 new songs? Awesome stuff
@@Saintjohnzman I've heard a clip of one new song but I don't remember the name of it. You're right. It does sound awesome.
@@timclark1324 Transgression?
Heavy metal band that love striper religiously so to say and all of the band members of that band to striper was Motley Crue. And the funny thing was that lead singer of Slayer I think it was he said he said he's like whoa this is so strange so bizarre. But very cool.
Stryper is awesome! I'm glad you recognize their harmony..
Michael Sweet is a great musician. He plays a hella guitar. I saw these guys about three years ago and they are absolutely the tightest band I have seen and I have seen hundreds. Michael Sweet and Oz Fox are spot on perfect on guitar. Stryper has the tightest vocals and harmonies hands down. You really should have checked out a live version instead of the video
Facts!
I saw them live at the Tulsa State Fair 1989 on the In God We Trust tour! I was a preachers kid so this was the only thing I was allowed til I got older. I loved these guys, I also loved bands like Novella, Deliverance, and Seventh Angel
Spot on! I have tickets to see them in September in Dallas,Tx. They still rock!
Is Michael Sweet the rhythm guitarist or the main? It seems Oz and Him both do solos
@@wnyrailfan9510 They both play lead.
Love Stryper! Seen them several times in the 80's. FYI....they still out there killing it!
I have tickets for this September!
The look of pure enjoyment on her face as she listens to this, what might be considered Stryper's most bubble-gum pop songs, is so endearing. What makes Stryper so iconic is that they sang to only one audience, the Creator, and they brought everyone else along for the ride. They still tour today and their music is no less powerful than it was in the 80's.
Check out "Do Unto Others" to hear what Michael Sweet and Stryper sound like today. 30 years later and still sounding great!
Or "Divider,'" for that matter, but they've gotten better with age, and still hold their own!
"Do Unto Others" is a fabulous track. One of Michael's best vocals I've ever heard.
I second this .great track
Still prefer 80s Stryper sound to today’s Stryper sound.
Michael is a pro. Took care of his voice and to this day has matured and grew as a vocalist. Have seen them 6 times in 3 years and He delivers to this day. Even has some grit while maintaining his sonic upper register.
I will pile on with everybody else - now you need to check out some of their brand new stuff to hear how Michael Sweet sounds 35 years later. (Spoiler alert: Absolutely phenomenal!)
How about a link if you can find the time. Thanks!
He obviously can't hit the helium notes anymore...but he still sings very well.
Agreed
@brentj.peterson6070
Guess again. He's still got an amazing high-end.
ua-cam.com/video/YOqMZkb4Bgo/v-deo.htmlsi=MWEqeMHeOTbwvLfu
Their 80's stuff was so good and fun, but I'm really liking their last 5 or 6 albums since their comeback in the later 2000's
Reborn, Murder By Pride, No More Hell To Pay, Fallen, (May) God Damn Evil, Even The Devil Believes, and The Final Battle. All of these Albums capture that Classic Stryper Sound, and yet, they add to their musical repertoire.
Personally, I can't believe just how well Michael Sweet's voice has held up over the past several years...or, should I say, over the past several decades! I'm just totally blown away by the fact, that he can still hit Super-High notes with relative ease, although he might not do that as much, nowadays. He's nearly 60 years old, so even he has the wisdom to be careful, as it concerns his voice. The last thing he'd need, is to do something foolish, vocally speaking, and end up blowing out his voice! He doesn't want that, and neither do we!
🤯 I didn’t know they had new stuff. I listened to them in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s.
@@VirginiaGeorge yeah they just released another really good album this past week. Michael Sweet is one of the busiest guys in the industry anymore.. He does a Stryper album about every other year, a solo album nearly every other year, he's done two albums with George Lynch, James Lorenzo (bassist for Megadeth and prior White Lion) and Brian Tichy on drums, they're working on a third album now, He's also done an album with Tracii Guns this past year, and a "supergroup" type album called, iconic, sharing guitar duties with Joel Hoekstra, Marco Mendoza (whitesnake, Twisted Sister bassist) and Tommy Aldridge (Ozzy, Whitesnake, Gary Moore etc) on drums and he's written an autobiography as well, all this within the past like 7 years. And I think he's produced all of them, he's a really good producer.
@@VirginiaGeorge On par with the classics, if not even better.
Just saw Stryper live in 2024, Michael Sweet still sounds incredible at 61 years old!
This has been one of my favorite songs since it was released. It doesn't get old. Actually gets better over time. So powerful! I can imagine me rocking this as I pass throught the afterlife tunnel and seeing Jesus waiting.
Nobody comments on the harmonies of this song, the harmonies are on an other level
When I bought this album I had no idea they were a Christian band. I'm not Christian. Makes no difference to me. They were a great hair band with beautiful music.
They still do make great stuff
Christian or not, it's all about the music at the end of the day.
Too many Christian rock bands coasted on their religious credentials. Ironically, if they really loved God, they should have strived for excellence to honor Him.
Stryper was not the specific subgenre of heavy metal that I preferred (I was not much into the glam stuff), but they were good musicians and performers. So I can give them credit for that.
Stryper mentioned that they love Jesus in some their songs how you didn't know they are a Christian band you have se song "the way" and "more than a man"
@@deantodd8103 their newer stuff is heavier overall, and not glam at all.
I used to love Stryper back in the day!! I was a huge 80’s hair rock band fan!!! Thank you for doing this one!!!
I just saw them play this past weekend. The singer still has it after all these years!
I'm a 50 year old anti-theist, and grew up LOVING Stryper. They, without a doubt, kick ass musically! If you liked that one, react to "To Hell With The Devil", "Honestly", and "Always There For You". Great stuff! 👍😈
Same here! Saw em in 86 or 87 in NYC. GREAT show! Saw them again in the mid-00's in Boston and they still sounded amazing!
Same here. 1986. At 13 discovering Christian rock secretly contained one of the best bands in the world.
When they toured to promote this album (86-87?), my sister and I went to see them play at a local high school auditorium in Tucson, AZ. Fast forward ~35yrs at the 2022 Monsters on the Mountain festival in Tennessee and Michael Sweet sounded exactly the same. That man can sing!
Almost 40 years and they are still getting it done. Just realeased a new album a last week.
I've been listening to Stryper's songs since 1988, 36 years, listening practically every day.
A fantastic band that I have listened to since I was 12. Glad to see them reviewed here. Thank you.
One of the best vocalist in rock so great
That opening..... Always gives me goosebumps!!!...... ❤️❤️❤️
Have been jamming to Stryper for 40 years. Saw them live 3 times.
As an atheist kid in the 80's I was absolutely blown away by this (To Hell With the Devil) album. I was fortunate enough to see the band @ Hammersmith Odeon London in 1987. They were great, bible throwing included.. Just great musicians.
I also saw them during the THWTD tour in FL and I still have that little Bible!
This was taken from the era of them being #1 on mtv for a long time can’t remember how many weeks so this is one of their pop songs but his high notes are crazy
You made me smile when you were bopping to the opening riff. I got picked on when I was a kid for liking Stryper..but I've always had very eclectic tastes in music. The lyrics in many of their songs were very well crafted to be ambiguous: could be talking about God, could be talking about a good friend or girlfriend. But I always loved their tone and the harmonizing guitars.
And you are right, that song in particular is just so upbeat and wholesome.
I’m a preacher’s kid and when I was growing up in the 80s I was only allowed to listen to Christian music. So bands like Stryper, Novella, Deliverqnce, and Seventh Angel were my intro to metal until I was able to hide my metal in my car. Michael Sweet was and is still an amazing and talented front man. I just recently go reacquainted with them!
@@jg6693 I’ve got Weapons of our Warfare on CD and on my phone
Beth Roars, Stryper just released a new single from their upcoming album the song is called Rise to the Call! It's a lyric video as well. If you like Stryper back then you need to hear and react to their latest. It's really good and I think you would like it.
How in the heck did I miss this one!! One of my favorite vocal coaches/critics analyzing one of my all-time favorite bands and lead singers!
I have to reiterate what some other folks have said. You need to see a good, live recording of these guys--a recent one. Michael voice has not lost much at all, and it actually sounds BETTER! His voice has lost some of "tinny" tone that it had and has gained a richer tone.
Another please!
Saw them live back in 1985. Still have a bunch of their CD's.
I love this band they still rock even now
Thanks for giving them a chance and reviewing their material. Their latest stuff, imo, is even better.
I've seen Stryper in concert and they are top shelf. Michael Sweet performed lead vocals, background vocals, and guitar work for Boston. Sweet was asked to be a part of what was supposed to be Boston's last performance in 2007.
Stryper is one of my favorite rock bands in my life, their lyrics, their music, their style is incredible. I loved your video, your comments, your hair 😄. girl from today you have a new follower
"I love this era. It was so dramatic." You sound like an archeologist who's found and ancient crypt, and that era was my youth. All I can say is that time really flies! 😆
It's a cliche' but he was largely unheralded and underrated as a vocalist because of the polarinzing music they played, but his voice was so strong!
I saw Stryper live in Dallas about 10 years ago and they still sounded great! I was very impressed.
Michael Sweet and I went to the same Vocal Coach- Elizabeth Sabine. She strengthened your Head Tone as a focus. Axl Rose of GNR and Jizzy Pearl of Love/Hate were students also 85-88 era. So she didn't just work the nice clean voice. Be Blessed
As Christian rockers from the 70's, we thank you SO much for hitting our genre with an equal level of enthusiasm & analysis as always.
I must have watched this film clip a million times from when I started listening to Stryper as a young teenager 35yrs ago lol 😂
My favorite band ever & still going strong !
✌👍
I was never a big Stryper fan, but I always thought his voice was very reminiscent of Dennis Deyoung from Styx.
My favorite band when I was a teenager…
Brought two songs from Stryper for my 8th grade classical music teacher and the class to listen to. I chose The Abyss/To Hell With the Devil and Battle Hyme of the Republic for everyone to listen to. These guys blew my teacher away. At the time he said he only gave one guy a perfect 10 (as he points at Mozart’s picture hanging on the classroom wall) but he was so blown away by the power of Micheals Sweet’s voice that he decided to give those two songs a very very respectable 9.5!
That was the 8th highlight that I’ll never forget! RIP Mr. B, you’ll never B forgotten…
Love this band. Been a fan for well over 30 years.and just saw them 2 weeks ago and they still are killin it. I do know Michael Sweets secret for long period singing and thats... drinking a few sips of olive oil... yep. Saw him do it before a show and he explained it. But as a vocalist that can keep the same drive as he had 30 years ago if not better.
My all-time favourite band since 1985. I was privileged to meet and hang out with Michael Sweet, Robert Sweet and Perry Richardson at the Adelaide, South Australia concert in 2018
Their song Take It To The Cross is a lovely little tune sung in delightful tones of relief and liberation, fun for the whole family!
YES!! Stryper is Awesome!! Saw them in concert 1987 in Cleveland Ohio!!
Beth - Thank you for listening to Stryper. Check out the latest music. They are probably the only band that can still perform with a lower register on vocals and kill it.
And of course the rest of the band as far as Stryper is concerned is extremely talented and underrated more due to the fact that they are actually a Christian band. Michael and Oz are both amazing guitarists. Robert Sweet the drummer is one of the best drummers in the world. Tim Gaines on bass was good too.
Personally, though, I was glad to see Tim go. He was causing too many problems, according to Michael and Robert Sweet, and quite possibly Oz Fox. After Tim was ousted from Stryper, they picked up Perry Richardson, who was known for his tenure in the Band, Firehouse. According to Perry Richardson himself, he's apparently been a Christian for many years, and Stryper was absolutely thrilled to have him come into the Band. Perry Richardson is (As far as I'm concerned), the PERFECT addition to Stryper. He compliments them perfectly with his Bass playing, and with backing vocals.
Stryper just never gets old and they continue to put out new music. I'm glad they found Perry and are still together after all these years. Not many bands last as long as they have.
Perry is an awesome addition! Bands are like a family...not everyone gets along all the time. It was time to move on.
I love that this song just would end up becoming Always there For You on the next album.
They are completely different songs
Love that you did this band! They're still making new stuff!! Check it out!! I'll veiw any Stryper reaction!!!
If you get a chance to see Stryper live I STRONGLY recommend you go see them. They will rock the Hell out of you!! Saw them several times and they just keep getting better and better.
Seen them live years ago, really impressed, outstanding performance..
That was when you actually had to be able to sing, no auto tune! I loved Stryper back in the day, and saw them afew years ago and they sound the same!
If you want to hear the depth of Michael Sweet’s range, listen to “Makes We Want to Sing” or “The Way.” Absolutely ridiculous.
I’m not religious either, but I’ve loved them since I was a teen, because in all their cheesy glory, they’re actually an amazing band.
I absolutely agree with your suggestions!!
I wish people would understand being a Christian and being religious are not the same. religion is of man Not God.
@@billwren5033 Christianity is a religion, though. Regardless, “I’m not religious” is usually code for being agnostic or atheist. In my case, it’s the latter.
More Than a Man and Writings on the wall are more impressive imo
Love "Makes Me Want to Sing" so good...so good. That's awesome with your open mindedness in their music vs thier song message.
Your genuine smile and laugh at the beginning sums up Stryper: Wholesome catchy fun music by a band that is pure talent. Along with the vocal harmonies, the harmonized guitars are fantastic as well. As someone who grew up in the 80s the answer is yes they were as fun as it seems. Stryper is still making music; their new albums are fantastic as well
I had the privilege of working with Michael on an album my band recorded. He is one of the nicest and most down to earth guys ever. Ironically, Stryper redid this song and my band got to do the backing vocals on it. Such a good time!
Ohmigosh, so much fun and just delightful watching and listening to you, Beth. Your enthusiasm and positive energy is infectious. I had it cranked and was totally rocking out with you there at the end. Keep up the great work! I just subbed...
LOVE Stryper...stopped in just to see your reaction. I've never seen anyone else do a reaction to their music. Thanks!
Great video. I was a teen back in that era and saw them twice live back then. The singer is known to be a perfectionist. They were just as energetic and solid even LIVE back then. And stupidly LOUD, they didn't hold back. I don't recall ever hearing that Michael Sweet had vocal training. I could be wrong.
Yes, you did Stryper! Currectly having a "early Stryper"-binge and wasn't expecting you reacting to Stryper. Awesome!
Yes they are amazing still singing today- Have a new album coming out soon
🥰Love this reaction, Beth! 💜Stryper is one of my lifelong favorite bands, and I've always admired Michael Sweet - I enjoyed your assessment ! 💜👍🏽775
Beth, thank you so much for doing a Stryper song! They are incredible musicians and Michael's voice is still incredible after all these years. I would suggest "More Than a Man" or "Yahewh". Michael also did a collaboration song called "Son of Man" that is incredible.
Stryper is still putting out incredible music...check out thier more recent releases like Fallen, Even The Devil Believes....Still an incredible live band as well
Micheal is an A+ talent IMO. He was good enough to join Boston after Brad Delp suicide.
Did he join?
@@robertcronin6603 He was with Boston for like 5 years officially.
I did not know...hummmm
@@jeremiahrose4681 yea he ended up leaving to focus on Stryper more.
I did not see him when he was with Boston but I read there were several songs he would not sing because they conflicted with his beliefs.
When I was younger went to one of the Mega Chruches in Dallas in the 2000's ...loved the concert ...was amazed that Michael Sweet could sing like that for over 2 hours....heis vocal chords much be made of leather...haha Great Christian Band and still to this day ..Good Testimony .....Keep it up ..!!!
You reacted to Stryper! Great singing, and you picked a tune from their verrrry glam days. I love all those albums from the 80s Stryper era.
I loved your reaction on this song! Great analysis and it was sweet to see your reaction to the words... you got it so quickly 😀👍
Michael Sweet's voice is one of the greatest in rock. Still singing great and the band still rocking strong!
Two top vocalists in Christian music were Greg X Volz of Petra and Bob Carlisle of Allies. Bob's version of Crying In The Chapel is epic.
Ken Tamplin He is another Christian vocalist who shines, and probably the one who best maintains his voice to this day. Not for nothing does he have a youtube channel where he teaches techniques to have a better voice
Love that you reacted to Stryper and a Christian band. They continue to put out amazing music - arguably some of the best of their career.
Omg! One of my favorite bands of all time. I would love if you react to a live version.
You’re the only vocal coach , may be a few others I haven’t seen , to analyze Stryper . So glad you did it ! Made me smile . I’m 52 going on 53 and they were some local guys that attended our local Churches that just brought light to the youth in this whole area and then beyond . I know most vocal coach analysis channels usually just pick the bands or singers that they get the most requests for , thus you don’t really see them on a lot channels with coaches analyzing Stryper . You can pick any Stryper song and you will always have the same outstanding dynamic of vocals throughout the band . A little insight . Michael I believe was vocal trained by Elizabeth Sabine , she was local and we all tried to get time in with her . She was amazing . These guys are just Rock solid. Their new stuff I’ll not disappoint. Just want to say thank you for doing this analysis and to see how they can make you smile and you’re day a little brighter , young people need that more than ever today !
You need to hear their live vocals . Check their performance recorded in Korea .
Michael Sweet can still hit those notes up to this day..
So unusual.
Not quite but he held up really well
Thank you , Stryper is one of my favorite bands and Micheal sweet has the voice of a angel !
This whole album is stellar.
Michael Sweet is an amazing vocalist. One song that blew me away was The River on one of his solo albums. I'd love to see your reaction on that one.
Stryper is still making new music. About an album a year. Really enjoyed this video.
Love Stryper, saw them in Concert in Houston, Texas twice!!
I Love Stryper!! Christian rock rules!!
, Thank you Beth for this great reaction!!!
Check out the newest stuff from Stryper, namely “Transgressor”. He’s 60ish yrs old and still holding high notes for like 15 seconds, and before the guitar solo hitting a high note that transfers into the stratosphere, for his age and 40 yrs singing is 🤯
You should check out Stryper’s song Transgressor of their new album The Final Battle and he’s in his late 50’s and hitting some crazy notes. His voice has really matured from here.
Great music video and love your insight with singing! Sweet.
I like the maturity of Michael’s voice today. Michael’s guitar tone and playing is also phenomenal. He IS Stryper.
Love you did this. If you're looking for similar, anything from TNT. Try "Tonight I'm Falling". Tony Harnell owns this genre.
Phenomenal tune!! Great call! Harnell crushes on that tune. Beautiful song!
Yes that whole album is so great! Sublime guitar playing by Ronni as well. My favorite song is "Forever Shine On".
Forever Shine on. Yes. my fave too! Will see harnell next weekend at M3!
or Everyone's A Star
I was a huge striper fan when I was a teenager. Once more, I still have this record on vinyl. Lol. Today, Michael Sweet is one of the few vocalist from that era that hasn't lost his pipes. Thank you for the blast from the past. I really enjoyed it. You should check out some music by Petra during the John schlitt era. His vocals are absolutely amazing.
Some of my favorite Michael Sweet vocals are in "Shining Star"
That was a fantastic crit on a fantastic band! That song just can't help but make a person happy and have hope.
Great reaction and analysis, as always. I was into Stryper for a bit back in the '80s, but I haven't heard them in many years and I've only just noticed that their vocalist, Michael Sweet, sounds a lot like Dennis DeYoung, from Styx.
check out their newest stuff.
The first time I heard Stryper, back in the 80s, the person who played it mentioned that they sounded kind of like Styx.
Stryper is sooooooooo freaking AWESOME! I love these guys!
40 some years later and stryper still rocking. if you have heard any of their new stuff, they still got it, making amazing music. Michael sweet still an amazing singer, and yes they are still christian.
Grew up listening to these guys. So good!
Michael Sweet is an outstanding vocalist and front man,, and I’m a huge Stryper fan for 39 years. They certainly didn’t have autotune back in 1989. He did an amazing job on that album. Oz Fox is also, a really good singer as well.
I met Michael Sweet and the guitarist Oz Fox after their show at the Hammersmith Odeon in the mid 80s, I asked them what they listened to on the tour bus and they both said The Beatles, they were huge fans
I love your critique of vocals. It makes so much sense
