  • New blades tend to stretch and have a lesser tension when first installed. This video shows you how to make sure that no longer happens.

    Thanks for the To The Point video - with NO stupid music. I always tension my blades starting out but, never after 10 seconds and almost never after I start sawing. My bad (stupid). This made such a big difference in my cuts. Thanks again!!!

    6ish years after you posted this video and it’s still helping people out, thanks for the tip! I was wondering why my blades seemed to be bending. I thought it was my method of control with the wood.

    Haven't used the scroll saw for ages and found that the blade was moving all over the place as I was cutting. You came up as the first hit and in two minutes problem solved. Thank you so much 😊

    *plink* *plink* *plink* Thanks, I should be able to remember that sound. I just messed up several cuts by not tensioning my blade enough (fairly new saw, not enough experience, just changed the blade.) And I'll start using unpinned blades, on your say-so.

    i have an excalibur saw now for about 2 months. i put in a new saw blade. first at the bottom, then at the top. with the pedal i start the saw(without the wood) for about a couple of seconds, stop it and mostly the blade is wobbly then (stretches) so I tighten it again. when it is tighten and the blade has a high pitch note, i want to saw the wood, but within a couple seconds it brakes at the top. i bought a set of pegas saw blades because that was the brand which was included with saw. not pushing the wood to hard. . maybe the cause is in the little screws at the left side of the arm, maybe it doesnot allign with the tightning black screw on the right? if so, how do I correct that? not sure that it is the cause though. . thx again in advance for your reply.

    This just started to happen; when I install a new blade I can't get it to tighten up when I move the tension lever to proper position. to cut. Can you tell me why I can't keep tension on a new blade?

    Have jet 22 inch the blades suddenly not been picked up by the clamping system. 5 inch blades seem too short. It was fine when the machine was new. Had it about a year.

  • @StevenLarkin

    But how do you know if the tension on the blade is too tight? or too loose for that matter.

    I’m very new to scroll saws, I have the same scroll saw as you, installing the blade into the saw, I find the blade is not long enough to fit in both clamps, and when it does clamp in it’s not holding a lot of the blade.

    A question for you, and I'll be grateful to hear from you. I use an excalibur 21. It seems that the blade tension changes with the position of upper arm. For example, when I stop cutting, loosen the blade, and put it in another hole to cut, if the upper arm is high, the tension will be less. and if the upper arm is low, the tension will be more when I turn the knob. Can you help me to make it consistent?

    I'm interested in learning Scrolling as a hobby. Does a scroll saw need to be bolted down to a heavy bench or can a lightweight free-standing workshop bench be used? I'm concerned mainly about the amount of noise they make and whether they tend to make a lot of vibration. I'm looking at spending about $200 or so on a hobby-level machine and a few accessories such as a magnifier as you suggested. Do you think it would also be necessary to buy a sawdust vacuum? I'm not really sure how much dust these saws generate, is it a easy task to clean up with a handheld vacuum?
    Thank you for this excellent series of tutorials.

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  8 років тому

      +Adam Ward
      Hi Adam, In order to reduce vibration and noise, any scroll saw needs to be secured to a solid base. Just setting a scrollsaw on top of a table is not a good idea. A hand vacuum should be fine, the sawdust drops to the floor and is easily vacuumed up. You should be able to find a decent used saw for less than $200 and along with the magnifier, I would also budget another $30- $40 for a foot pedal as well. Good Luck

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  8 років тому +1

      +Jo Nellen Hi Jo, I really need more information in order to try to troubleshoot your problem. Are you cutting wood when it breaks, are you exaggerating about the 5 seconds and it's really 5 minutes?Are they new or old blades, How long have you been using a scroll saw? Are you pushing too hard, are the blades old? Etc...Just like a doctor, troubleshooting problems requires information, the more you can give me as to what the circumstances are when the blade breaks, the better chance I have of giving you an intelligent answer..

    I have a machine that has a totally different configuration than just about every scroll saw I have seen... its an older one, and tension adjustment is in the rear of the machine on the opposite end of the arms... there is no flip stop at the front... or it is missing.

    • @febeleven
      @febeleven Рік тому

      @Chris Griffith, I have a Ryobi, and I must of bought it back in the mid 80's - early 90's, mine has the tension on the top of the arm towards the rear, but it has 2 tensions, one smaller knob on top of the other one, It's been years since I used it and I want to get back in wood scrolling, I think the one smaller knob, tightens the blade and not sure what the other one does... I don't know, I don't get it. If only my dad was still here!

      +tr66 If your saw does not take pinless blades, there are adapters that you can buy to convert the saw so that it does. Here is an adapter that Olson sells, it has mixed reviews. Good Luck. www.amazon.com/Olson-AC49610-Scroll-Blade-Conversion/dp/B005ELXNX6

    how do you know what speed to cut at?

    • @Scrollsawforum1
      @Scrollsawforum1  6 років тому +1

      Hi Joan, In my opinion, slower is better. The faster the blade goes, the harder it is to stay on the line, and your blades and bearings wear out faster. I usually have my speed dial set at about 1/2 to 3/4 speed. I never set my scroll saw on the fastest speed anymore. My best recommendation is to set the speed dial to where you can comfortably stay on the line and keep your piece under control. This speed will vary with the hardness and thickness of the wood so it is something you will develop a "feel" for over time. When cutting at slower speeds, you should notice that it is much easier to stay on the line which makes the quality of your cuts instantly better...Bob
