Maintenance on a Delta 16" variable speed Scroll Saw

- I am working on a Delta 16 inch variable speed scroll saw today and it has its typical issues. These are a great saw to have and if you do a little maintenance on them, they will last a long time.
Thank you. I have a 40-560 that I picked up a couple of years ago. It runs and now I have an idea of how to care for it. Much appreciated.

Stevo, I echo the positive comments of the others. A thought on the bellows, I used the bulb from a blood pressure cuff. It's squeezes in the same area of the bellows and has a one way check valve built in so it takes in air from one side and blasts it down the tube. Thanks again for sharing your good advice.

It is one of those saws you don't really use that often unless you are into that type of craft. Good to have around if you have the room. I have a bigger blade in mine and sometimes use it like a bandsaw. Thanks Mike. Stevo

Thank you Sir, i checked the scroll saw that i bought recently and approved that it was running dry, i lubricated with grease all the joints to prevent further damage, your video helped me to understand the structure of the scroll saw and do the right maintenance.

I always take care of my tools, i am crazy with that, i want my tools to work properly, safely and last for long without problems. The scroll saw is the 10th in my saw collection, almost all the kind of power tools passed from my hands for over of 35 years but i never had any experience before with a scroll saw. The joints were covered and hiding by the brand signs and i had no idea how this machine is made, but now i know thanks to your video 🙂@@stevoj8959

Those are common shoulder bolts, easily found in Allen head / hex key. Every machine has them.

Any machine shop could reproduce the 2 small bolts by starting with longer bolts and machining the shank and proper threads to match the old parts. The cross link could also be made, as you said, yourself. If I were doing this (and I might be, I also have a 40-540 Delta), I would want the bolts to wear before the cross link ends because they are easy to replace. So the bolts probably aren't hardened (very much). I also looked for small rubber bellows -- no joy even on McMaster, but a small aquarium air pump might be good enough for the job. These parts can for sure be made. You could probably weld up the wore spot on the bolts and repair them but the link would be easy. Never thought of an aquarium pump. One comment I had was there was some bellows on ebay. Unless the motor does, these machines should last forever. Thanks. Stevo
I'd love to agree...Truth is you probably couldn't. Even if you could find a machine shop, they'd either blow you off as an annoyance or charge you $100/hr+ with a minimum charge for the hassle. You'd be better off to buy another Taiwanese Delta Scroll saw and throw the broken one in the scrap pile.....
Now if your uncle Billy has an old lathe in his tractor shed, that's a different story.

It is amazing how much better the old stuff was made in comparison to the new. It seems like they used better quality metals and thicker. They weren't concerned about saving $20 when they built it. Thanks. Stevo
@@stevoj8959 I paid $10 at a yard sale for a very old Sears scroll saw. I replaced the cord because it was rotting and cracking rubber. Works nice, except it uses a very short blade, about 3.5 inches, and I cannot seem to find them, even on the intetscreen. Not that I do much woodwork, but I might do more if I could find blades.

Hi Steve, I have a 25 year old 40-540 which has had very little use, mostly stored under my workbench. I have recently started to scrollsaw again and am a total beginner. I do not have the quick release Jaws just the straight ones that tighten with a thumb spanner. I took the Jaws apart to clean them and lost the small spring that locates in the moving jaw. I live in the UK. Any idea where I might get a replacement spring or do you know of another machine that would have a similar spring.
This has been a wonderful video which has helped in my restoration of my grampas delta. But I'm missing the tension lever. I've looked high and low but they dont make the part anymore. I was curious if you could help point me in the right direction to find one or help with some reference photos so I can attempt to fabricate one.
The tension lever is about 3 inches long. Not sure what the threads are but one could easily manufacture one out of a rod or weld a rod onto a bolt. You are lucky that is all that is missing. Worth fixing up cause it is a nice machine. Thanks. Stevo

I see no reason why that would not work. The two speeds are nice and I would try it first before I went variable. Variable is nice if you need precision. Thanks for tuning in. Stevo
Hi Stevo, I just bought a used one of these scroll saws and went to UA-cam for some help and found your video. From your video it seems like the one I bought it is in pretty good shape, but it did not come with a manual, blades or a blade tightening tool. Can you tell me what length and type of blade works with this saw and where I might find a tightening tool? Thanks and regards.
Blades are just your everyday scroll saw blade without the T hook. You may be able to buy a blade wrench on ebay or some of the tool supply places still might have one(part # 1343648). If you can't find a blade wrench, you can stick a small screw diver in the hole then use an allen wrench. Hope this helps. Thanks. Stevo
Hi i just got a old Delta and the blade is coming out of the lower blade clamp and i was wondering if you know of anywhere that i could get a replacement blade clamp?

Parts are tough to get because they don't make them anymore. You should still be able to get the quick releases for the blades. I think that was after market. They are a good saw. Enjoy. Stevo
You can get the bellows and the special screws on Amazon $22 for the bellows and $14 for the screws.

For some reason my degree marker won't let my table tilt more than 5 degrees. It hits into the saw base. Do you have any ideas what I can do? Maybe some thing wasn't installed correctly. I removed the compass and it will tilt further.
That is interesting. The table of course only tilts one way and pivots on a couple of bolts. They may be too tight or just need a shot of penetrating oil. It should move smoothly. Thanks. Stevo

The cross pin blades will not work in these saws. You can just grind the pins off to make them work. No pins gives you a little more adjustability. Thanks. Stevo
where can you buy the variable speed switch mine does not do a thing it's on one speed any thoughts Delta 40-540
I have purchased them from an electronics store with a new knob and was able to make it work. It is just a small rheostat. Unfortunate you can not buy original parts for them any more. Hope that helps. Stevo
Hi i have a Delta scroll saw that i think is the same as the one in this video and the bottom blade clamp is damaged (the damaged part is fastened to the arm) and i was wondering if you know where i could get a replacement blade clamp?

Hello from the uk I’ve been looking for some spares for the same model but it’s near impossible to get anything the added clip to this footage shows you fitting blade top part mine needs replacing if you could advise where possible to locate spares would be appreciated
I have been looking on line for some parts and they're just not out there. One thing you can try is adapting a blade clamp from a different saw. Too bad the shipping costs for those parts is so high. Hope you can get it up and running it's a good saw. Thanks. Stevo
hi ! I Have a 40-540 c DELTA scroll saw and it is missing the 4 rubber grommets that are on the base of the machine! also one of the special screws that hold the blades! Can you or any-one help me out?
You may still be able to find some parts at E Replacement Parts.Com. The grommets might be a problem but one can rig any small rubber mount. As for the blade clamp, you can still source out quick release kits for them. Hope that helps. Stevo

@@stevoj8959 I have a Delta 40-560 type 1 16" 2 speed. I need the upper chuck or blade holder. I purchased it along with some other tools. All I have is the flat piece of metal that fits between the fork that goes up and down. I guess the screw worked a loose and the piece that held the blade against the flat piece fell off. There was a quick connect available at one time but it is obsolete now along with the original holder. Thanks for your reply.

I came across a free Delta 16" Model 40-540. Its in excellent condition but its missing the Blade Cam part#1346124. Did a search and no one sells it. Any ideas what I can do to fix it? or should I just forget about it. Thank you in advance

The spring itself is about 8 mm or 5/16 inches long, for the diameter, it just has to fit in the hole. You can usually find a longer spring then snip it off with some side cutters. I think I have even used a spring out of a pen before. Thanks. Stevo
Thanks Stevo, used a pen spring cut down. It is a little small in diameter but works ok. I will keep looking for a bigger dia.

I bought a ss250 at a garage sale it works great but the variable speed seems to be at full speed and non adjustable any repair tips

Had this issue on mine. I was able to pop off the switch panel and look underneath- the speed adjustment knob had come loose from the contacto below. I was able yo put them back together, and variable speed was restored
