    The fact that they could make us care about a non-sentient volleyball is good storytelling and directing because it’s actually ridiculous😂

    • @johnjr757
      @johnjr757 2 місяці тому +13

      I think it's not so much caring about a volleyball, but it's more about feeling Hanks' pain. He's already been through so much and when he's on the precipice of making it or not he has to suffer yet another loss.
      Either way still amazing storytelling.

    Wilson is symbolic of our overwhelming fear of loneliness. Holding on to him at all cost rather than facing the world entirely alone and without hope.

      Wilson isn't just symbolic of the fear of loneliness. Wilson has always been representative of himself. In this particular scene, being unable to save Wilson is again symbolic; the realization that he can't save himself. Having failed, he looks back at Wilson and realizes he's actually watching himself drift away into the empty ocean, never to be found again. Profoundly sad. Luckily, fate had other plans.

    My daughter told me they were going to watch this in her high school film class. I never give spoilers, so I just said "You're gonna feel like crying over something you never thought you'd cry over." I came home from work the next day, and the first thing she said was "Wilson!".😂

    We watched this movie with our emotional 10 year old daughter. She got quite attached to Wilson and when they were leaving the island watching how dangerous it was for Tom Hanks, she said she didn’t care as long as Wilson was okay. Her mum and I looked at each other and stayed quiet. Five minutes later, she was on my lap in floods of tears. Poor Wilson.

    In my opinion, Hanks floating on the raft in the middle of the ocean crying his soul out of his body is the best shot of Hanks' career, which is REALLY saying something.

    Wilson wasn't a just a bloody volleyball. He was something to keep Paul sane for 4 years because even in crippling loneliness just hearing the sound of your own voice can keep you sane. *Wilson went from an inanimate coping mechanism to a needed friend*

    Its not silly to think of being emotionally attached to a ball. When i was a kid i had a fav tennis ball named/branded Vicky...as an introvert it was like the best buddy i had. One day i just lost it & was so depressed losing it even though the market nearby could get me lot more other Vicky tennis balls.

    Wilson wasn't a volleyball stuffed with straw, Wilson was the part of himself that he Had to let go of. An important part that got Him through all of the shit, but could not help Him get back to civilization.
    Still breaks my heart.
    The other options Him just putting Wilson on a shelf or in a box, or going through therapy to give him up?
    Neither would have been good storytelling.
    Succinct and powerful.
