Today February 22nd, my grandfathers birthday. He is featured in this video. He is playing the upright bass. He was on contract at Warner Bros as part of the orchestra. They would often use them as extras in big production numbers. He played on such soundtracks as “Gone with the wind” and “Casablanca” Happy heavenly birthday to my grandfather Victor. ❤️
Thank you for posting. My grandfather is in this picture in the background, playing upright bass. Victor de Lory. How cool is that? He was on contract at Warner Bros. and did a lot of stuff like this.
I have just introduced my ten year old to Fred and Ginger. I had tried earlier, but now she appreciates the humor and grace of these movies and loves them as much as I do. She has completely fallen in love with this movie. It remains number two on my list, behind " Swing Time". There will never be the likes of these two again.
When I was little my grandad used to sing this to me...10 years later, I start to hum/sing abit of this( obviously a little bit wrong ) so I searched it up and here I am!
The dancing is outstanding is this movie. I think it was also on Broadway years ago. "Instead of a girl or two in a taxi, we were compelled to look at the Black Sea...." - Irving Berlin was a total genius !
We joined the navy to see the world And what did we see? We saw the sea We saw the Pacific and the Atlantic But the Atlantic isn't romantic And the Pacific isn't what it's cracked up to be We joined the navy to do or die But we didn't do and we didn't die We were much too busy Looking at the ocean and the sky And what did we see? We saw the sea We saw the Atlantic and the Pacific But the Pacific isn't terrific And the Atlantic isn't what it's cracked up to be They tell us that the admiral Is as nice as he can be But we never see the admiral Because the admiral has never been to sea We joined the navy to see the girls And what did we see? We saw the sea Instead of a girl or two in a taxi We were compelled to look at the Black Sea Seeing the Black Sea isn't what it's cracked up to be Sailing, sailing home again To see the girls upon the village green Then across the foam again To see the other seas we haven't seen We joined the navy to see the world And what did we see? We saw the sea We never get seasick sailing the ocean We don't object to feeling the motion We're never seasick but we are awful sick of sea We joined the navy We joined the navy
Those are the lyrics to the other version, but I just realized the lyrics are different in this original version! They go something like "We owe the navy an awful lot."
This was the first Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movie I ever watched, and I loved it. But more than that, this is my favorite song in the entire movie. Gotta love Fred's performance!
Pure change I find this true gem! I've a recording from a Royal-Navy concert in Chatham UK 1942 and was looking for the lyrics of this funny little song. It must be very popular even on the other side of the pond. Thanks for uploading !!
Fred Astaire is my favourite entertainer in the world, but we really must pay tribute to the genius of Irving Berlin here. Who else could have written such a tuneful and amusing song?
I have never laughed so hard in the first two minutes of a film as I did at this one! This is one of the lesser-known Astaire/Rogers films - though I don't know why, it's chock full of funny lines, hilarious gags and some of the best dancing the duo ever did.
They certainly don't make 'em like this anymore! Life is far too serious these days; I'm currently doing a playlist of songs that have meaning in my life and this was the one that we used to sing in the car going on holiday. My ex royal navy Father used to start the song when we'd asked for the umpteenth time 'are we there yet?" Thank you for uploading!

i'm a big fan of fred and ginger's movie and i always thought i prefered when fred was dressed in top hat, white tie and tails until i saw this one and realised there's still nothing sexier than a man in uniform and fred is no exception to that rule!
I have no reason not to believe the person that said their Grandfather was playing the Bass in this movie clip, I don’t know why people have got to go out of their way to be a complete Moron by insulting this person. Sometimes I think some people are just so miserable they want everyone to be as miserable as they are.
Is this the one where Fred Astaire throws this white thing down and it makes a popping noise like a fircracker and he it like tap dancing to the song and everything I found that scene so very awesome if this is the movie, can't remeber what remember what that what that that whit white that white substance is calledI know it has a name though
@@chattyroz2934 nope that was not it sorry I checked it out and wish I could remember what the name of the movie was that Fred Astaire was in was there more than one Navy movie that Fred Astaire in because I distinctly remember that Fred Astaire was in a Navy uniform and I can't remember if it was the aft part of the ship or the focsle part of the ship that Fred Astaire was tap dancing and doing his usual style of dancing with the firecrackers or whatever it was that he was throwing down on the deck of the ship but that scene was so awesome to behold I just wish I could remember the movie was in the Navy so that is how I know Navy jargon thank you

That's awesome!
A.D. DeLory that's actually really cool,
Wow thats great :)
did he earn well?
A.D........How cool is that?
Very, very cool. Thanks very much for sharing. I love this movie.

5 thumbs down? Seriously? It's Fred Astaire!
They're the same folks who voted for Hillary Clinton!
the same people that put pineapples on they pizza!!
Plenty of Democrats love Fred Astaire. Pretty asinine to inject politics into this.
Fred Astaire makes me feel happy no matter what.
You're not the only one, Fred Astaire makes me smile anytime
That's my grandfather playing the upright bass. What a kick!!!
Any idea who the guitar player is?
The dancing is outstanding is this movie. I think it was also on Broadway years ago.
"Instead of a girl or two in a taxi, we were compelled to look at the Black Sea...." - Irving Berlin was a total genius !
Fred Astaire was the epitome of class.
Exactly !
Love this song--Irving Berlin at his naughtiest! It's like the navy version of "Oh How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning."
Happy 116th birthday, Fred!
A bit of H.M.S. Pinafore in the line about how "the Admiral has never been to sea".
Heard this song on Bioshock 2, absolutely love it. Catchy & hilarious 👍🏻
What a wonderful song and performance! And perhaps best of all--every bit of it is still true!
Spoilers,
They saw the sea.
te mamaste xDDD
Yeah, that's the title. :)
This song speaks to my soul haha

Thanks for posting.. I’ve been humming this tune all week, I guess I heard it as a child and it came back to me . Found it on YT! 👵🏻👍

I love this movie. When a Navy recruiter came to our house my mom was upstairs singing this song at the top of her lungs. Cracked me up.
Thank you Grandma for introducing this to me! It is wonderful! Thank you to ALL who are serving, or have served!
Like a buddy of mine used to say, "the Navy, it's not just an adventure, it's a job!"
This film was on TCM last night, and it is FABULOUS!!!!!! Thanks for posting this song, it's FANTASTIC!!!!!
My grandfather is the man in this scene playing the upright bass. How cool is this? ❤️❤️❤️

+go1567: It is. I learned it in London as a boy.
Thank God for TCM. Especially Film Noir on Sundays with Eddie Muller.
Great video! We listen to this song all the time! It's my grandfather in the background playing the upright bass! Love this!
They don't make 'em like this any more
Gareth Askew they do not make songs like these either
merci pour cet extrait musical.
Thank you so much :) I love this song, and Fred Astaire is one of the most talented people who have walked this earth.
I love this film
Fred and his tap dancing! =)
this is my fav song!
What a funny little song...lol...and.Fred looked so adorable in that sailor's uniform ♥ (Blushes) ♥
Fred Astaire is my favourite entertainer in the world, but we really must pay tribute to the genius of Irving Berlin here. Who else could have written such a tuneful and amusing song?
Fantastic movie, one of my favorites.
my grandmother taught this to me and my sister when we were little.
Oh I love this song
This is fabulous!! Fred Astaire looks so much like my Dad who strangely wasnt a Fred Astaire fan. Whats not to like? Love you Fred!
Delightful, the whole movie is Fred and Ginger at their most buoyant, and the opening number sets the tone. Great show, and Fred is the greatest!
OMG!I LOVE Fred! =P he was so talented!
Ginger did everything Fred did, but she did it backwards and in high heels.

@TheKittyKatsMeow And also one of the best comedic film talents. What a blessing to have had him in so many great films.
I think this was my first Astaire flim as well - it certainly made an impression!
just wonderfull
I swear I love Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies
This was on tv here last night late what a hoot.
We joined the Navy to see the girls
And what did we see?
We saw the sea:(...I love this song and
I LOVE Fred, he so cute:)
The lack of girls is the saddest part.
I'll see a lot of you, and you'll see a lot of me, and it's absolutely certain that we'll see a lot of sea, but we ain't gonna see no dames!
How adorable! Fred was wonderful :)
I agree with the previous comments; posting the full movie would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the clip!
I thought it maybe in color.

There was a version of this song that was pretty popular in the late 1950s, as I recall!
My Grandpa used to sing this to me.
Splendid! I'm addicted, too! Song and dance men - Fred, Gene and Donald; song men - Bing and Howard Keel. Of course, I like some actresses, too
I was brought here from Bioshock. Superb song!!!
I found this song via the "For & Against" book.
For real?? how LUCKY!he must have tons of stories from Fred Astaire then!
He looks so much like Stan Laurel in this clip
I thought the exact same thing...
I have always thought so too.
I thought so too... Are they sixth cousins ten times removed or something? XD
Ethel Mermann and Gene Rayburn just sang this on The Love Boat 🚢

I love the Art Deco inspired ship!

Bioshock 2 brought me here!
What about Cary Grant? He was English & was always comfortable in front the camera - to my way of thinking at least.
I love this scene - & the song!
