@@mscott3918 Absolutely. Maria predicted this not long before she died. It took a bit longer than expected but listening to recent recordings from La Scala is the proof, leading singers who probably wouldn't have made the chorus back in the 50' and 60's.
I'll be 76 in Feb 2019, and after listening to opera for more than 60 years, this is the first time I've ever heard the complete Finale of Norma. To have had this experience with Maria Callas as the lead is for me a life-changing experience. Simply staggering! I've nothing more to add as Sergio Barcelos, the fellow ahead of me, said everything I would have. Truly, the most operatic voice of all female voices to date, as far as I can tell. It is very sad for me to read how poorly she was treated by the men in her life.

Although La Divina has done most of the acting through her voice, it's still wonderful to understand the libretti. Such profound connection and understanding of the composition had allowed her to really become Norma.
Without question the greatest Norma ever. Although there is no way to know what Giuditta Pasta was like who the role was created for, I cannot imagine that she would have matched Callas in the dramatic aspects of the part.

Eso se va de Callas, sale de ella y canta Norma, canta el personaje y eso no pudo ser igualado por ninguna prima donna y fue la primera en lograrlo, por eso, siendo agradecidos con las bellas voces que nos han regalado su arte desde Claudia Muzzio a Anna Netrebko, la voz de la Callas y su actuación en personajes de este dramatismo, no tienen comparación.

A mí,ni idea por qué,está maravillosa interpretación me trajo en recuerdo una idea tipo brabuconada de hace mucho,y era que, o algo así ,suerte en pila. Es la maravilla del arte. Tampoco la pavada, hay que saber reconocer.
This doesn't compare with the finale of rome 1955 with del monaco, but for a studio recording it is still way above any else who has even tried the role. The big difference between Callas and Sutherland is that Callas could sing, and conduct if she had wanted to, the entire opera, whereas Sutherland, vocal goddess that she was, just knew her part and was very naive about the sfogato technique, didn't have a complete mastery of inflection and diction as Callas did, nor half the musicianship, but she was great in other roles.
Southerland could hit all the notes beautifully but Callas IS Norma that is the huge difference. She vocal problems in the upper registers but it made little difference then and she is amazing on this record. I am sure Ponselle could sing all the notes on key and beautifully too but hardly with the emotional intensity Callas displays here. She was a unique singer for the last 100 years and for the next 100.
She was even better at La Scala in 1955, perhaps because she was acting the role on stage. And IMO Simionato was a more interesting Adalgisa than Stignani.

It is very important to remark that this superb Callas recording was done AFTER her slimming program, a fact which consistently contradicts the voices that claim that by slimming Callas lost her voice. In fact her greatest artistic contributions came from 1954 on.
That is not true. First of all, this recording was made at the end of her dieting, not after. Secondly, if you listen carefully to her recordings, the later ones may sound more obviously "dramatic", for instance because of the use of stronger accents, but the earlier are frequently more nuanced, because having superior vocal ressources afforded her more choice and a greater range. For instance her 1950 "D'amor sull'ali rosee" is sublime and unsurpassed, also by Callas herself. The way she plays with the notes in the cadenza in a way that sounds absolutely free yet totally musical and always stylistically appropriate - she wasn't able to do that later on.

It is very important to remark that this superb Callas recording was done AFTER her slimming program, a fact which consistently contradicts the voices that claim that by slimming Callas lost her voice. In fact her greatest artistic contributions came from 1954 on.
That is not true. First of all, this recording was made at the end of her dieting, not after. Secondly, if you listen carefully to her recordings, the later ones may sound more obviously "dramatic", for instance because of the use of stronger accents, but the earlier are frequently more nuanced, because having superior vocal ressources afforded her more choice and a greater range. For instance her 1950 "D'amor sull'ali rosee" is sublime and unsurpassed, also by Callas herself. The way she plays with the notes in the cadenza in a way that sounds absolutely free yet totally musical and always stylistically appropriate - she wasn't able to do that later on.
