In August 2015 I had the pleasure of meeting Renee, when she came to where I work at the property of Dame Nellie Melba in Melbourne Australia. Just in awe she wanted to see the room and the piano the Melba sang and played in. She retired not long after.
I've seen Renee in recital and opera at the Chicago Opera and Orchestra Hall. She always has the MOST beautiful sound of every note and register and has remained my favorite soprano since I heard her almost 30 years ago in he CD "The Beautiful Voice" No one compares to her!

When I was younger, I had the great good fortune to perform with people who, whilst not being quite at Renee Fleming's level, were still spectacular by any artistic standard. They were perfectly normal but you did catch yourself sometimes looking at them and thinking, 'how on earth did you just do that?'

This is a vocal-orchestral merging made in heaven. As a total opera non-professional, I feel as if the orchestra and Ms. Fleming were totally in sync with one another. It was so mesmerizing that I think I held my breath for what seemed to be minutes. So delicious!

20 years ago I watched a B Grade move called 10.5 or something like that? It was about a monster earthquake. I watched the movie because the adverts for it were accompanied by this hauntingly beautiful melody that was hummed by a female singer. I had no idea what the melody was, but I loved it so much that I watched the entire movie just so I could read the credits to find the name of the song. I was bummed when the credits did not show it. So I went searching for the song. Finally, one day maybe a year later I found it. It was this song Casta Diva. Since that time I have listened to so many renditions of the song by so many different sopranos, and I can say with certainty that I love this rendition by Renee Fleming the best. He voice is exquisite! Her rendition is so melodic. Just beautiful & such a wonderful pleasure to listen to.
Casta diva is not all the way through gentle singing but also dramatic explosion. She pretty much does everything equal cause her voice is not a dramatic one . So generally it doesn't matter that she sings soft all the way ,this is a masterpiece of inner dramatic contrast.
All that's missing are the the oak tree, the Athamé, the full moon, the Mistletoe and Norma's Druid Congregants! Here is Norma! So beautiful, delicate and also powerful, as only Ms Renée Fleming can bring it!
it's funny how people argue on youtube about who is better, everyone got so much time for mutual insults! Caballe is incredible in this role, with all the flat notes she is still one of the best. anybody can dissect any performance until nothing is left of it but why bother if at the end of the day she takes your breath away. Fleming has always been scooping into notes. why not, i ask you? she's got a gorgeous voice and an exquisite musicality. Callas screeches on top notes like an unoiled hinge of an old door and yet she is got such magic to her, you just can't stop listening. that's what real talent is about - never perfect and ... always perfect. Stop arguing and enjoy.

This is R Fleming rendition of “sexy diva”. Her facial expressions are confusing. She smiles at the beginning then she appears confused then she makes sad faces. Does she understand the meaning of the aria? It’s very questionable!!

I was in the feuer downstairs at the Met for her first Metropolitan Verdi role - it was sold out - matinee Saturday - we listened over the speakers - (pretended I was waiting for someone to come out!)when she transitioned from her romantic Mozart, Strauss repertoire to the Verdi ❣️🎼. She spoke to my daughter when we were in line - beautiful lady. Glorious Verdi singing. ❤🎉

This can be heard countless times: the feeling of musical beauty and perfection is always the same. RENE: she surpassed herself but also many hitherto known (established) interpretations. In the opera starry sky, she shone with a golden / glittering divine radiance. 🎼🌟🎶💫
The will is immeasurably more important. I teach everyone the same way. But one four-year-old girl learned to paint oil in 2 minutes. Others cannot reach that level over the years.
Some people said she has constriction here and there and I agree, but it is something that develop in the voice as it aged. You can't hear that in her early recordings. Sadly time is merciless even to great voices. The great Maria Callus turns sharp for her voice near the end of her career. I listened to Fleming's live twice. What I found really amazing about her voice is the control. Just so precise that gives u a "WOW" when you hear the voice floats. It was unlike anything I have ever heard. At the end of one of the 2-hour recital I went to, she finished it off with an E6. Just incredible! Couldn't have been possible without this level of control and support. Her voice live also has this golden and sweet quality that you would miss in a recording. It is hard to describe, but it was quite magical. All the constriction kind of just melted away with the sweetness and gold:)

Singing like all art is subjective. I love Renée but I also love other singers' interpretations. I agree with some of the comments that being a "top seller" is not indicative of talent... nor is fame. I also do not think we can COMPARE voices... clearly most singers who have achieve some level of fame are superior singers than I can ever hope to be soooooo instead of comparing apples to oranges, I like to savour every flavour... :-) if you do not like... don't listen. BUT maybe you will hear something new and different and it might touch you differently .
It does seem strange doesn't it? All I can say is that opera seems to be an almost uniquely divisive artform. As you can see from some of your other replies, people can be very passionate about their support for particular artists.

A gorgeous aria, gorgeously sung. Renee Fleming is one of the greatest lyric coloraturas of our time or any other.
she is more a full lyric, but she is lovely here. Lisette Oropesa, Erin Morley----these ladies are more lyric coloraturas.
Her interpretation, voice control, dynamics, and performance in every way was excellent. What a joy to hear the music of Renee Fleming, it is heaven!

The will is immeasurably more important. I teach everyone the same way. But one four-year-old girl learned to paint oil in 2 minutes. Others cannot reach that level over the years.

A magical talent and a regular person to boot ! What in the world is NOT to like here ?
Some people said she has constriction here and there and I agree, but it is something that develop in the voice as it aged. You can't hear that in her early recordings. Sadly time is merciless even to great voices. The great Maria Callus turns sharp for her voice near the end of her career.
I listened to Fleming's live twice. What I found really amazing about her voice is the control. Just so precise that gives u a "WOW" when you hear the voice floats. It was unlike anything I have ever heard. At the end of one of the 2-hour recital I went to, she finished it off with an E6. Just incredible! Couldn't have been possible without this level of control and support. Her voice live also has this golden and sweet quality that you would miss in a recording. It is hard to describe, but it was quite magical. All the constriction kind of just melted away with the sweetness and gold:)

Singing like all art is subjective. I love Renée but I also love other singers' interpretations. I agree with some of the comments that being a "top seller" is not indicative of talent... nor is fame. I also do not think we can COMPARE voices... clearly most singers who have achieve some level of fame are superior singers than I can ever hope to be soooooo instead of comparing apples to oranges, I like to savour every flavour... :-) if you do not like... don't listen. BUT maybe you will hear something new and different and it might touch you differently .
It does seem strange doesn't it? All I can say is that opera seems to be an almost uniquely divisive artform. As you can see from some of your other replies, people can be very passionate about their support for particular artists.
