Yeah-Especially if some of those Sardines that were eventually sent back to their Town sometime off-screen in the time before the events of the movie proper (and going by this,the Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs prequel series that came later on-in which I DO personally consider Canon in a way,honestly-that boasted the town itself having a massive Sardine boom back in those days,as quoted by the synopsis of said series honestly,that later led into this Movie here,technically sometime before, apparently) were (IRONIC,since Sardines are encased in brine/oil,which IS a form of preservation here AFASIK) probaby past their respective shelf (expiry) date/s and I'm seriously hopeful that nobody living there hadn't gotten sick from out of date Sardines (but hey,Expired Sardines=More sardine Chum for the fishermen,Amirite...?),not to mention that I have assumed/Headcanoned that MAYBE the fact they couldn't afford to import Food from the mainland (let alone common ingredients for most foods here,honestly) to their Town POSSIBLY due to the folk/Dockworkers whom do such that already probably bailed on the town after sending back the last of the Sardines noone/NOBODY else wanted and later decided to say "Bye Felicia/Go Sardine Flipper yourself/yourselves Swallow Falls, We're out! Bye...!" and fled,if I'm afraid here correctly here,mind you dearest... (NOT TO ALSO MENTION that Shelbourne MIGHT'VE had tried it at FIRST,but I'm assuming that noone would pay the possibly ridiculous amount of funds needed to do such if he tried to contact the outside world for help..or Shelbourne's carcass would've probably ignored the warnings of his townspeople and the folk on the mainland until the last minute but was probably screwed out of getting help for his Hellhole until it was too late here,honestly...)
I mean,Flint DID SAY that Town effectively got left behind/stuck with the aforementioned unwanted Sardines AND the became essentially "Gray/Grey and Flavourless" (On quote),of course if there's something that ain't sardine-based (even bread,like you mentioned above here,kind dearest.) they would've gone ham on that (pun intended, Buddy. *Pun intended.*) anyways,dawg...
