Theres a reason why people whose childhoods were seasons 1-3 or 4 of spongebob... can RECITE entire episodes. Hillenberg just knew how mature the humor needed to be and Im so thankful I could get home after school, see it at 5pm on ytv for 10ish years. What a great show.
The genius of the early seasons is that the humour is aimed at everyone which is really hard to pull off. You watch some of the later episodes and it's clear that some jokes are aimed at the young people and other jokes are clearly aimed at older audiences. Old spongebob had jokes that both the young and older people could laugh at. My dad always joined us to watch spongebob back in the day because the show was just as funny to him as it was for us.
Don't forget all of the other writers, artists, etc that made show what it was. It wasn't just Hillenburg. And although I have no qwelms with later seasons, the first 5 had a lot more sharper writing

Remember when they were ruthless against SpongeBob for dreaming to fly? Then when he proved them wrong, they felt that HE owed THEM favours. They formed an angry mob both times.
Dude, the entire town is just a complete nightmare to live in. The police force is so incompetent, yet so harsh on small crime, that it's almost borderline corrupt at times. The residence aren't just ruthless, they're bloodthirsty. There have been many occasions where a riot occurs because of something small. There have also been times where literal mobs with pitchforks and torches (don't ask) show up. Plankton has almost successfully taken over the town once (and I think more, depending on the episode you look at). In the end, everyone in Bikini Bottom (including it's own police force) is a bunch of bullies, and maniacs. This is something I always saw ever since I watched the show in the first place too, this is nothing new. It's both funny, and pretty sad in a way.
I wouldn't be surprised if Squidward, Sandy, Spongebob and Patrick would just shoot up the entire town. I think rock bottom and new kelp city are way better

Dude, the entire town is just a complete nightmare to live in.
The police force is so incompetent, yet so harsh on small crime, that it's almost borderline corrupt at times.
The residence aren't just ruthless, they're bloodthirsty. There have been many occasions where a riot occurs because of something small. There have also been times where literal mobs with pitchforks and torches (don't ask) show up.
Plankton has almost successfully taken over the town once (and I think more, depending on the episode you look at).
In the end, everyone in Bikini Bottom (including it's own police force) is a bunch of bullies, and maniacs.
This is something I always saw ever since I watched the show in the first place too, this is nothing new.
It's both funny, and pretty sad in a way.

I wouldn't be surprised if Squidward, Sandy, Spongebob and Patrick would just shoot up the entire town. I think rock bottom and new kelp city are way better

It came from arguably the worst episode in the classic series (First 3 seasons): Grandma’s Kisses, so that might explain why
The fact they received no comuppance for that shit still bothers me to this day. Classic example of how the final five seconds can entirely kill an episode and it’s message. Honestly why I’ve never felt sympathy for squidward despite the bullshit he goes through in later seasons.
