  • In this episode on Tekniq, we will see extraordinary skills in a factory in China, where gigantic pots are designed from clay and further processed to make them sellable for commercial use.

    Its hard enough to learn to throw using just your own body weight and balance let alone working ‘through’ three other humans. Thats nuts! So impressive.

    If I ever work there, I want to be the guy who slams the clay down onto whatever surface it needs to be on. I'd be like, "hey Pete, here's yoUR CLAY!!!" **SLAM**
    It seems so very satisfying.

      The guy who throws is really good. Notice how perfectly centered he gets it? You usually don't see the first throw so well centered. Everyone in this video is very skilled.

    The strength it takes to shape the pot on the wheel is incredible. I took a pottery class once and couldn't even get raise small pots. I was just no good at it.

      I took a ceramics course in collage and our teacher made out using the wheel as some great skill that takes years to master just making a simple bowl. I made my first bowl in 10 mins and I guess out of spite or anger the teacher proceeded to purposely destroy my creation. After that I never took him serious and never let him touch my projects again. This of course didn't stop other students from ruining my projects either. It was a real eye opening experience for me, that your talents can be despised very easily by others.

    I would LOVE that job of sitting carving the relief designs, headphones in, totally chilling and creating something so spectacular! Not saying I have the skills to do it, but it's totally the kind of thing I'd love to learn.

    True camaraderie. On the wheel, sharing an experience like this enough to make it normal is how we humans find peace...I am sure none of those workers have significant life or family problems. And... I wonder how it was done before fork lifts.

      The wheel. Using a series of logs placed underneath one at a time - roll forward remove log and move to back. Rinse/repeat.

    This craftsmanship is nothing short of awesome! I wish all people in the world could just stop and appreciate the creativity and ingenuity of humans and stop killing each other over how our governments are different! What a world we would have to be able to watch something like this and be able to participate without the fear of whether or not I am a communist, a capitalist. a socialist, etc.! You guys (and gals) are doing truly great work and hopefully it will be an endless legacy for all of you!

      ​@fibienn250 it may have been a glaze or an under glaze. An underglaze is like a paint and then you put a glaze over it, then fire it.

      They do the bottom. The next section is a cylinder, open on the top and the bottom. They join those two pieces together. They can even do a third layer.

    Many probably dont know how much force it takes to center and work with such an amount of clay… those guys have INCREDIBLE skill.

    What memories come flooding back to me. Wonderful environment to work in too. Although that folk lift driver was not on his game 100%.
    Some of the Peaces were so well designed. The kiln would cost a bit to run though. Thank you for the share.

    Look at the wooden block under the wheel that was design to accommodate the forklift....
    Then imagine how much torque the wheel have. And then imagine how it feel if their legs touch the wooden block.

    It's very interesting. They have a piece of cloth attached to the bat to let them know when a full rotation has completed.

    Wow!! This is amazing. How everyone works together in shaping and forming the vases, to painting and then firing.
    I took a pottery class in college. Put a lump of clay on the potter's wheel, started it to spin and the lump of clay came off the wheel and hit the wall. Still got a B in the class.

    The clay appears to be kaolin or porcelain. That type of clay is difficult to “throw” because it lacks the elasticity of low-fire and stoneware clays. Incredible skills but the thick walls help maintain the pots shape.

    Far more skilled, than the ones that actually made the largest pots!..(in Denmark...at least they are, bigger than these)
