  • How I Book Hotels In Thailand And Elsewhere
    Having lived in Thailand since 2003, I have booked many hotels while travelling around the country. Occasionally, I have spent an enormous amount of time trying to find the best deal. However, I almost invariably end up booking through Agoda. Not only are Agoda rates almost always the lowest, but it is a company I have learnt to trust over the years. In 2023 there were stories about another large online hotel Booking company (whose name I won't mention) who failed to pay accommodation hosts and whose customers turned up at hotels to find that they did not have a reservation. I have never had any such problems with Agoda, and the few minor issues I've had have been dealt with efficiently by their customer service representatives.
    Agoda is a company I trust and recommend. Use the following link to book your next hotel room!
    www.agoda.com/partners/partne...
    Disclaimer. I am an Agoda affiliate and will receive a small commission for any completed bookings that are made through my links. However, I only promote goods and services that I am happy with and use myself.
    Are You Interested In Learning How To Read Basic Thai?
    Being able to read enough basic Thai so that you can negotiate menus and read signs is incredibly useful, and it's not that difficult. It's not like Japanese or Chinese, where you have to remember thousands of characters. Like English, it's just consonants and vowels. Yes, there are more characters than English, but phonetically Thai is a lot more consistent. English vowels and vowel combinations change sound in different words (cough, rough, through, thought, bough, etc). In many ways, Thais is actually easier to learn than English. If you are interested, try the tutorials on my other UA-cam channel. With some effort and dedication, you will be able to read quite well after around six months.

    Video Description
    I didn't mention anything about buses to Bangkok in the two videos I've done at Hat Yai bus station. Apologies for this omission. I will cover the subject in this video and also take a look around the Hat Yai Plaza area.

    I would prefer travel by sleeper train to the north, safer and enjoy the rural scenery. Ur video on Hatyai Plaza market recalled my memories, when I first visit Hatyai in the early '90s it was the must visit place, but now only Kim Yong. Thanks again for the video..👍👍.

      Pleasure, thanks for your comment! I've never actually travelled by sleeper train, but it's something that really appeals to me. I'll have to wait now for the kids to grow up, but by that time I will probably be too old ☹️ I first visited Hat Yai in 2002 and the town has changed enormously since then. In some ways it's good, but a lot of real Asia has already disappeared and the modernisation/Westernisation of Thailand is occurring at a rapid pace. I'm just glad I'm old enough to have seen the country before it changed too much, but now there's no turning back the clock.
      I noticed today that they have started renovating a building next to Gim Yong market, just opposite Jia Color Lab. They've completely ripped out the inside and I guess that once they've finished it will look quite modern. Eventually, I think they will do the same for the whole of the market. I admit that the current building looks pretty bad, but it also makes me feel sad that so much history and heritage is being lost. There's no stopping progress ...

    Thanks for the bus info to Bangkok. We have not decided whether we are taking the bus or the train..depends on the sleeper bunk. My favorite buy is the Zebra brand food containers especially the tiffin carriers , black glutinous rice and the prepared mango sticky rice in the market. 💕

      As I said in the video, if you have plenty of time try to reserve a sleeper carriage on the train. You'll pass through some nice countryside and you will be able to get some proper sleep. You can book on-line: www.dticket.railway.co.th/DTicketPublicWeb/home/Home
      Considering the price of bus tickets and the fact it is a 12 hour journey, I think it's worth paying a little more for a flight. This will save you a lot of time. If your dates are flexible and you don't travel on peak dates there are some real bargains. The airlines also offer regular promotions.
      I haven't compared prices for the Zebra pots and pans. You can also buy them in department stores, but I suspect the shops outside are probably a little cheaper.

    Enjoyed the video Phil! Makes me miss Hat Yai. I'm flying back to Thailand tomorrow and spending a couple weeks in Phuket before I head back to Hat Yai again. Cheers!

      Thank you! I hope the rain stops before you get back. More torrential rain today and not great when the weather's like this.

    I got a first class train ticket From hat Yai to Bangkok a few years back now.
    Nice service got food on the journey.
    Being 6ft 3 it was a bit cramped.
    Another time I used nok air which I wasn't impressed with but air Asia are good.
    Flying is definitely the best option.

      There's something very romantic about train travel. If you have the time it's a great way to travel. Good scenery, good food and a proper bed! One day I'd like to visit Sri Lanka and do some train journeys there, but Covid and Sri Lanka's economic woes have put that plan on hold for a while.
      When I was going to Bangkok regularly my preferred airline was Nok after not being impressed with Air Asia. I took an Air Asia flight in 2006, but the return flight was delayed 8 hours. Strange how our experiences differ. Thanks for your comment!

      Thank you! A lot of Singaporeans like Hat Yai. I used to visit Singapore frequently when I first got to Thailand and although Singapore is highly developed country I can understand why it is good to escape once and a while! Hope you get back soon!

    Wow, I didn’t know the prices were that close between bus and plane tickets. Thanks for giving a little history info too about the budget airlines. I hope they will always stay in business as it is so affordable. I’m always impressed with your knowledge of reading and pronouncing Thai words. We will be retiring next year to Thailand… still debating which city to start finding our “homebase”. Your videos are always informative, and deserves much more views.

      Thank you! Some of the promotional air ticket deals are cheaper than the bus. There aren't many buses to Bangkok these days, but the planes are always full. Where to live is a very personal decision and what suits one person won't suit another. Many foreigners love Pattaya, but I couldn't think of a worse place to live. The decision involves many factors. It's actually something I've thought of making a video about. Regarding views, we are all slaves to the UA-cam algorithm! I can't do anything about the way UA-cam promotes (or rather, doesn't promote) my videos so I don't think about it. Thanks for your comment!

      Thanks! I'm not familiar with sawng-taews in that area. Sorry. There are many places to change money and I was never sure which was best, but a few people have told me about that place. I've used it to change SGD to Baht and to buy Ringgits. The rate was pretty good.

    Travel to Bangkok by bus is not worth the trip taking into account you pay a little more than 2000bt ultimately more than 12hours long hours whereas a flight takes you less than 11/2 hrs back in 2012 my family who love visiting Bangkok and I decided to take a NokAir flight from Don Maung airport - Hatyai to spent 2 nights and than back to Bangkok to join the rest and the flight cost less than 1500 bt round trip very cheap indeed no way I will take a bus just like back in Singapore I had visited hatyai since 1900 but always by air as I had a phobia taking the long-distance bus even to KL less than 10 hrs
    Cheers and have a great weekend .🙏

      @expatlivinginthailand  Рік тому

      That's how I feel. It was different before 2004 when the only flight option was expensive Thai Airways, but since 2004 there have been lots of budget airlines. I've seen offers in the past for around Bt600, which is cheaper than the bus! Recently, I was looking at a trip to Bangkok with my family over Christmas, but it's a peak time and flights are quite expensive. If you travel off peak there are tickets for just over Bt1,000. I've taken the bus from Hat Yai down to Singapore a few times. The bus fare was quite a bit cheaper than the Tiger flight, but it's a long, very boring journey. I was worried that after Covid airfares would be very expensive, but they're still not that bad.

    24 Flights per day from Hat Yai to Bangkok or Opposite ?? Did I heard the right ?

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  3 дні тому

      @tahirhasni8641 I'm not sure of the exact number (and it changes all the time), but this is a busy route, and there are a lot of flights every day. It may be 24, or it may be slightly less. Hat Yai airport is one of the busiest airports in provincial Thailand.

      @PohHwaNg Buses from Hat Yai to Bangkok pass through Chumpon. Go to Hat Yai bus station, find a ticket booth selling tickets to Bangkok, and tell them that you want to go to Chumpon.
