  • Video Description
Being able to get a good Western breakfast in Hat Yai is important to me. In the past, I've done videos about Chow, Ong Tong, and The Chef. All of these places do a decent breakfast. Today's video is about another good place called Kin Chao. It's a bit off the tourist trail, but it's definitely worth seeking out.
Here's the location on Google Maps
    maps.app.goo.g...
After breakfast, we made a quick visit to Suntisuk Market and - following a viewer request - I had a very quick look around the Lee Gardens Plaza area. This is Hat Yai's main tourist district.
How I Book Hotels In Thailand And Elsewhere
Having lived in Thailand since 2003, I have booked many hotels while travelling around the country. Occasionally, I have spent an enormous amount of time trying to find the best deal. However, I almost invariably end up booking through Agoda. Not only are Agoda rates almost always the lowest, but it is a company I have learnt to trust over the years. In 2023 there were stories about another large online hotel Booking company (whose name I won't mention) who failed to pay accommodation hosts and whose customers turned up at hotels to find that they did not have a reservation. I have never had any such problems with Agoda, and the few minor issues I've had have been dealt with efficiently by their customer service representatives.
Agoda is a company I trust and recommend. Use the following link to book your next hotel room!
    www.agoda.com/...
Disclaimer. I am an Agoda affiliate and will receive a small commission for any completed bookings that are made through my links. However, I only promote goods and services that I am happy with and use myself.
Are You Interested In Learning How To Read Basic Thai?
Being able to read enough basic Thai so that you can negotiate menus and read signs is incredibly useful, and it's not that difficult. It's not like Japanese or Chinese, where you have to remember thousands of characters. Like English, it's just consonants and vowels. Yes, there are more characters than English, but phonetically Thai is a lot more consistent. English vowels and vowel combinations change sound in different words (cough, rough, through, thought, bough, etc). In many ways, Thais is actually easier to learn than English. If you are interested, try the tutorials on my other UA-cam channel. With some effort and dedication, you will be able to read quite well after around six months.

I hope it stops raining for you. It's been very wet now for well over a month. It's fine right now, but there was more rain this morning, and my wife tells me another storm is coming in next week. Pretty miserable. The weather should break as soon as we get into January.

Hi Phil, very yummy and drooly sandwiches 😋, those would probably cost over 150-200bt in Malaysia. Nice tour Phil 😊
A lot of people bought new cars after covid, when rates were low.
Cars all funded by cheap debt, but whatever let those people enjoy and glad your son gets to see the exciting models 😊.
Actually I too like to watch a particular channel called "K1 car TV", this channel features the traffic jam of luxury cars every weekend at Malaysias most luxurious mall Pavillion Bukit Bintang, he might like this channel as the models are so unique.
Actually isn't the profusion of luxury cars a global phenomenon even in BKK post covid hmm🤔...
But I recently saw an unsettling statistic which is shocking about Malaysia, "Cities with the most number of buildings above 150 meters".
Kuala Lumpur is number 8 alongside NY, Tokyo Dubai Shanghai.
This is totally shocking as definitely KL doesn't have global demand for office commercial properties and the buildings in KL are empty.
But Malaysians are majority floating around in blissful ignorance of all these looming crisis including epf and the crashing ringgit and all the debt....
They are busy still going around with their Phillipino and Indo maids as if our currency is like 20 years ago.... whatever.... Let's see... 😁

    • @penangtv6108
      @penangtv6108 9 місяців тому

😅As usual I sound a bit bitter in my comment when I reread it, so I wondered why,
I think it's because, my dad has a probably higher than average lump sum inside epf, earning above 5.5 % which used to be ok, in the previous zero rate environment... . And the sustained low interest rate environment here is 'squashing' savers like him, and crashing the currency.
That's why also everyday in the papers you hear of people getting scammed hundreds or millions of ringgit because they're promised double digit returns outside of the epf and banks.
Low interest rates to bail out the automotives, properties, basically the entire majority which are floating around in a debt bubble.

@penangtv6108 Thanks for your comments! I met a friend for coffee last week, and his wife had just lost around Bt200k in a scam. It was a classic pig butchering scam, but she fell for it even though it happens every day, and these scams are widely reported in the Thai press.
My wife was telling me recently about how many Thais are getting into trouble because of rising interest rates. Many people here seem to have very little financial nous, and Thais (famously) live in the moment with very little regard for the future. They get low payments on loans or mortgages for a couple of years, but when the deal ends and they have to pay market interest rates, they can't afford it. Difficult times for all of us.
That was an interesting statistic about tall buildings. Bangkok now also has a lot of tall buildings. That wasn't the case on my first visit in 1987. Back then, there were few tall buildings and no trains or roads above ground.
I get the impression that certain countries build very tall buildings as a kind of status symbol. I may be wrong with this, but Malaysia always seems to me to want to try to outdo Singapore, and building tall buildings is one way to increase bragging rights. Personally, I dislike places with lots of skyscrapers as I find it oppressive and claustrophobic.
As I replied in another comment, I think the events of recent years have just increased the wealth gap. There are still people doing well, and buying the fancy cars, but a lot more people are now feeling the pinch. In Western countries, the middle classes have been hit hard. The world has changed so much in the last 20 years. I don't worry about myself, but my kids are a big concern.
BTW, I didn't detect any negativity in your first comment. Maybe it's because your comments are always realistic, and in today's world, realism = negativity, but nothing was unduly negative.

I think the Kin Chao western breakfast provide mainly sandwich menu a combination of western and local delights that suits the local taste can give it a try as the tourist traffic is improving from the pre-covid period as the end year school hoiliday in Singapore and most resident will take this opportunity to travel . Phil ,Thank you for sharing
    Cheers .😀😀😀

Thanks Francis! We all opted for sandwiches today, but there were other breakfast sets on the menu. It's a nice little place and really good food. The visiting Singaporean and Malaysian tourists seem to be very well acquainted with certain places in Hat Yai, such as that second-hand shoe shop, but not others. I'll try to cover some places that don't feature on people's radars.
I took my lad to play football this afternoon and on the way back we had to go through central Hat Yai again. I don't think I've ever known it this busy. There were cars and motorbikes parked absolutely everywhere and lots of traffic. it seems to be a result of both Selangor and Thailand having public holidays.

Another eating place! Love this sort of info 😋 Breakfast when in Hat Yai at 0930 sounds just about right for me.. I can get up without an alarm.. and most importantly, I avoid the crowds! 😁 Lunch will be after 2pm, dinner maybe 9pm, with Sangsom-Cokes around 6pm.. all designed to avoid the masses.
I'm no economist, but I am very budget-conscious.. and inflation in particular is what I gripe about the most😒 That's been particularly pronounced during & after Covid. I have mixed feelings about the EPF withdrawal thing.. it's basically the government saying 'we have no funds so use your own' & that will obviously impact post-retirement survivability. Then again, withholding it might hv meant some people may not hv survived to see retirement!
    Tks for the video! 👍

    • @expatlivinginthailand

Thank you! 9:30am is a very civilised time for breakfast! As I've gotten older, I've started eating later and having fewer meals. After breakfast I will often eat lunch at 2pm or 3pm and then I won't eat again in the evening. However, despite my reduced intake, my belly fat still won't go away! Life's not fair.
I'm no economist, either, but I didn't agree with completely closing everything in 2020, nor did I agree with governments printing huge amounts of money to give to people to sit at home doing nothing. Inflation has been a huge, worldwide problem. When I was back in the UK earlier this year, food inflation was running at about 18%.
With so many people unable to work during the lockdowns and struggling for money, I can understand people dipping into their EPF's, but I've seen some videos on UA-cam and many Malaysians have now been left with so little money in their EPF pots that they won't be able to afford to retire. What has happened in the last few years has caused lasting implications that will go on for a very long time.
Thanks for your feedback. I really do get some great information and astute opinions from my Malaysian viewership.

Yup, there will be a public holiday for Selangor on Monday (11 Dec 23) - ruler of the state's birthday. Selangor hast he highest population amongst all states in Malaysia.
In my opinion and view regarding economy in Malaysia, particularly surrounding Klang Valley - things are not really good. However, my friends in Penang stated the factories there were running full force.
Businesses were rather soft, though the youth market is still spending. Many businesses are finding tough to balance higher salary demand, rising cost prices, electricity and slower selling price increase. The bottom line is getting hurt.
Recently my company posted a job recruitment drive for management trainees, hundreds of graduates particularly from east coast Malaysia applied. More than 90% were with degrees or higher and many were jobless or doing food delivery or part time jobs.

One of the things I appreciate about this channel is the great information that I get from my Malaysian viewers. Thank you! What seems to have happened in recent years - especially since Covid - is that the rich have got richer, but there are far more poor people. Penang, I believe, has a lot of high tech industry and this is a good field to be in.
There are many graduates in Thailand doing food delivery or menial jobs and I saw a video about China last week saying the same thing. When I left school in the 70's, you only studied for a degree for certain professions. For many years now, every student has automatically gone to university, just as a matter of course. Now - with so many graduates - there just aren't enough suitable jobs for them. Try getting a plumber or electrician here, though. When I left school the consensus was that it was better to learn a trade and get some real skills. That thinking was left behind for many years as everyone went off to university to get a degree, but I think it has started to return.
Southeast Asia is still in a better position than most of Europe, especially my home, the UK. Far too many people have abused the welfare system for far too long, and now, with thousands of illegal immigrants arriving every days and putting a further strain on the welfare system, it is only getting worse. Several local councils have already gone bankrupt and I have no optimism for the future at all.

Covid has changed dramatically the paradigm of the world economy. Inflation were almost zero or minimal in the first 2 years, then jumped to double digit in most countries and few were even triple digit. Many wereoverdone
After covid, the emergence of big and massive conglomerate became more obvious. They will continue to grow in the coming years and will spend massively to kill any new entrant.
Fully agree on the graduates situation in the past vs modern days. I think every government in every country is trying to "pleased" and be a populist government by continuing to churn out limitless graduates without taking into consideration of demand.
The monetary system and good days may come to an end as populist governments continue to hand out cash to public to gain support to stay in office. No one seems to willing to sacrifice and accept deep cut on spending and austerity life.

So far tried one of ur recommendation
, ติ่มซำนักวิ่ง dimsum runner, near the roundabout, reasonable price and friendly. 7:15 Someplace there are more Malaysian than Thai by 2:1 at Hatyai, this year Hatyai Marathon, if u throw a stone at the starting point it will most likely hit a Malaysian and the stone bounced off and hit another Malaysian😂. One of the main reason more Malaysian drive cars because of the very cheap petrol (RM2.05/l), which is cheaper than some mineral water.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  9 місяців тому

LOL 😊 Next time I'm out, I'll take a pocketful of stones! I'm very envious of Malaysian petrol prices. I believe there are safeguards in place to stop too many Singaporeans and Thais hopping over the border to fill their tanks. Glad you enjoyed the dim-sum. I quite like that place, but I haven't been for quite a while. I got fed up hearing about how fantastic Chok Dee was, as if there are no other dim-sum restaurants in Hat Yai. There are many, and most are equally as good or better.

Hi Phil, we are going to Hat Yai later this week. How's the weather there currently? Is it raining? The last time I was there during Xmas week back in 2022, it flooded just before I arrived 😅

It's been as predictable as ever. October, November, and December were very wet. As soon as it gets into January, the weather breaks. I've been having some building work done on the house all through January. It's been hot, with just a couple of short, light showers.
For the next few months, it will stay dry most of the time but get even hotter. Around mid-April (peak hot season), summer storms will start to occur regularly in the afternoon. It will remain hot, gradually cooling by September, and then the rainy season will begin all over again in October! So, next week, expect it to be hot and most probably dry, but maybe you will see a little rain. Have fun!
