Yes, the world and the popular culture has changed so. Lightfood sung from his heart, true talent. Young megastars sing with an unnatural voice and they all sing the same, imitating each other. Sounds horrible and boring.

All he needed was his voice, his song and his guitar. That is talent.

"In the Early Morning Rain" with an acoustic guitar and a baritone voice, magnificently written, that even Elvis wanted to sing it.
It's one of my favorite songs.

What hurts about this is that Gordon Lightfoot represents a time, era, spirit in Canadian music---especially his Yorkville days, when a scene was thriving and vibrant---an epicentre bursting with creativity---that we may never see again

I felt very sorry to see him go. A CD was recently released on the Jasmine label collecting his early Country/Pop sides that he made for the Canadian Chateau label, recorded in two Spring 1962 sessions in Nashville before he became famous, and those very early recordings he preferred to forget.

Gordon Meridith Lightfoot is one of the most finest Canadian singer/songwriters of our time. He will always be missed by many who took the time to listen to his music and appreciate the depth and well meaning and writing of each song he produced and performed and sang on stage to the many who appreciated his finely detailed work. Rest well and rest peaceably Gordon Meridith Lightfoot. Your work upon this earth is completed, however your music will live on throughout all eternity.

The word “legendary” is used far too frequently these days. But in Gord’s case, the description is spot on. He was the voice of Canada. The Canadian Railroad Trilogy is an absolute masterpiece, as are the two shipwreck songs (Edmund Fitzgerald and Yarmouth Castle). I said on another YT video that Gord’s songs put you in the scene. With Edmund Fitzgerald, you were transported to Superior and were rolling with the waves. On something like Song for a Winter’s Night, you were cozy by the fireplace with a steaming mug of hot chocolate. We will never see his like again.

American here: Believe Me, Gordon Lightfoot was a big thing here too (At least, AFIK in Pittsburgh) Along with Hockey, Basketball, and that annoying thing, the Telephone, Canadians contributed a LOT to "American" culture. Off to listen to Gordo, And maybe some RUSH. 👍😊👍

And what do we have now to compare him to? Auto-tuned 'singers', dumbed down lyrics, inarticulate songs with zero class and no message. I'm glad I got to live in a world with Gordon Lightfoot alive and singing his heart out. Today's youth live in a wasteland and don't even know it.

I think Locke & Key graphic novel and streaming series was inspired by the lyric, "ghost in a wishing well" in If You Could Read My Mind. He just had lyrics where a single line could inspire generations of others' art. And will continue to long into the future.
