Peter Wildoer - Polyrhythmic hybrid shuffle (read the description)

- Another clip filmed with my iPhone. This idea evolved when I was working on a new part for Darkane's next album. The last couple of weeks I've been working on some Virgil Donati ostinatos. With this in mind I wanted to build something inspired by Virgil into the Darkane riff. The Darkane version features a complex bass drum rhythm that I still have to learn but this is the first step towards learning it.
Here's what's going on for those who are interested:
The whole clip is in 4/4 time with the subdivision of eight note triplets. I'm "counting" 4/4 throughout the whole thing.
00:00-00:09 Normal shuffle
00:09-00:18 Ribbon crasher added with left foot. Playing a rhythm in 3 against 4.
00:18-00:35 Right hand join the left foot to complete double strokes between left foot and the right hand in 3 against 4.
00:35-00:53 Left hand continues to play the back beat on 2 and 4 but adds a straight beat in 3 against 4 on the left cymbal stack and the 12" left snare.
00:53-01:02 Left hand stops playing the backbeat and now the 3 against 4 is very obvious to hear. Note the kick with the right foot is still playing the 4/4 time.
01:02-01:10 The kick drum also starts playing the 3 against 4. Now there is nothing that keeps the foundation 4/4 time, it's just me "counting" it in my head. Note that I still feel the 4/4 strongly.
01:10-01:19 The kick drum starts plays half time in 3 against 4 together with the left cymbal stack making if sound more like 6 against 8 actually.
01:19-01:28 Left hand add the back beat in 4/4 time again, I think this sounds cool. ☺
01:28-01:36 The kick drum goes back to play 3 against 4.
01:36-01:54 Kick drum is back to the basic 4/4 time making the original 4/4 obvious again.
01:54-02:03 Left hand stops playing 3 against 4 and just play the backbeat in 4/4. Kind of full circle here.
02:03-02:20 Right hand stops adding up the 3 against 4 together with the left foot and goes back to normal shuffle in 4/4.
02:20-02:29 Back to square one with normal shuffle.
02:29-02:34 Surprise!
In the beginning the left foot Ribbon crasher is at times not tight and I'm aware of that. So no need to start bashing about that. I will post the Darkane version some time in the future and promise to get it perfect then!
Cheers,
Peter Wildoer
Peter you did a great & brilliant job!! lots of respect for You \m/
never again will I have my speakers turned up ALL the way on any of ur videos haha scared the hell out of me at the end haha
your iphone does a pretty good job recording that. it always fun to experiment with new patterns. nice.
this is awesome...I'm a huge fan Peter, your drumming is KILLER
My favorite part was the scream...hahaha Awesome!!
GREAT DRUMMER!!!!
THATS MY MATH-TEACHER!!!!!
INSANE!!!!
the ending was awsome too lol
...genios peter..
Love it at 1:40 where you bring it back. Freakin boss!
@mrboverbro I haven't tried the Praetorian that much so I wouldn't know. As that one is bell brass and the Masai is bubinga they differ a lot. I love the warmth of wood but I guess the brass will cut even more. But to be honest my Masai cut well enough for me!
@Wildoerfaren
nicee i want that snare badly but its eather the masai or the praetorian witch do you like better?
why don't this guy do a DVD !!!
😂 2:33 😂
cool....
opa cara sou brasileiro e vendo voce tocar fico contente em saber que em todo canto do mundo onde for vai ser diferente porque tem sentimento e trabalha muito bem em tudo que faz um abraço e paz DEUS te abençoa
Peter! Just saw some part of the job you did for the Dream Theater audition an listened to Static Impulse hundreds of times. Lots of respect and a big hug from Colombia. Keep making great music.
10 yrs ago holy shit... And you could still upload this to IG and get hits on it lol Its still relevant
Thanks for your kind words! I'm glad most of you like this clip.
Cheers and keep those drums slammin'
Peter
Sounds fantastic and respect for the high difficulty! i am curious, what are 2 cymbals stacked on the cymbal you hit with your left hand? thanks a bunch
@louiemalvessi But then it wouldn't be polyrhythmic. ;-) This video is more about layered rhythms than me playing a solid groove all through. Kind of education I guess...?
Cheers,
Peter
wow, i really really appreciate the time you put into explaining what you are doing.
You are a class act sir.
Man, I wish I could play stuff like this. Polyrhythms give my simple drummer brain headaches. :P
Also, I like how the bass drum makes the iPhone shake.

I, only I, would prefer if you kept doing the shuffle all the way through. Groove is all to me.. Anyway, it's your style, i respect. Hope you get the job with DT man.
How can anyone bash you on here, for anything? This was insane. Totally on beat and complex as hell.
@mrboverbro Yes, Tama Masai. The best and most versatile snare I've ever played. LOVE IT!!!
Cheers,
Peter
Peter :) You played germany in the hafenbahn. this was nearly 12 years ago. there were just 15 ppl there or something but we had a great talk afterwards :D maybe you remember me :D

I love your playing in One More Time , your drum fills , and vocal are AMAZING !!!!
excellent video and explaination,Peter you're awesome:-)!cool groove and technique....and screaming;-)
People always got to hate and have something to complain about. Why can't people just accept that every drummer is different and each drummer has their own way of approaching the instrument?
funny thing is you cant just buy that snare, you have to get it custom made, and tama doesnt have any 12x 5.5 snares on their website...gl getting that,
I write songs now and then, but being a guitarrist makes it difficult to assimilate complex rythms like these. I think my head just exploded.
dude if tool ever looks for another drummer (god forbid they do) you would easily take the place of danny carey.....
Hey! Here, a big fan of your work. Nice kit by the way!
Greetings from Colombia.
xlnt ideas, excecution and composition...I will work on this concept! cheers.
peter is such an amazing drummer and a great person
This is amazing!! Keep working bro!! By the way, you succesfully shocked me in the last second -__-;
Your work on Static impulse rocks! Did James let you have full reign on writing your parts?
hey pete, what are you using for the click sound, the one that has the pedal on it, thanks
Amazing, Mr. Wildoer!
I'm "hungry" for more videos from You!!!
Greetings from Hungary :D
@Mortii666 Är sjukt nöjd med slutet, ha ha ha...

Yes. Everything is on purpose and explained in the description. I play triplets in groups of four between the Ribbon Crasher with my left foot and the stack with my right hand.
give pdf please thx
tama masai?
Surprise!!
It's a Rhythm Tech Ribbon Crasher attached to a LP Gajate.
Nej, detta är influerat av David Garibaldis bok "Future sounds".
What's is your "x-hat" china stack made of (on your right side)? It sounds really cool!
Hello! Snare masai?,thank you very much.it's beautiful play drum.
Hey Peter, that is totally awesome. And gives me headaches thinking to reproduce it by myself. :D You're great man, keep on rocking!
Gua uuuu... Amazing, Peter Wildoer... Greetings from Peru... :D
Dude..... I nearly pissed my pants, because the ending :DDDDD
do you use a metronome when you practice these exercises?
Just amazing! It's always a pleasure to watch your videos!
Good coordination! Musically this is completely useless though.
I actually use this in a song on the new Darkane album. Video of this song coming soon from the Meinl Drum Festival that I played on. :)
Hey man, I'm curious if you ever used that shuffle in any song? Really groovy stuff.
Hey Unnar Geir Glad you like it. I used a variation of this with more rhythmic phrasing on the kick drum and different ghost notes on the snare on a Darkane song called "In the absence of pain". Search for "Wildoer in the absence of pain" here on UA-cam and you will find a video from the Meinl Drum Festival. The drumming is very far from perfect in the video as I was so nervous but you will get the picture. Cheers!
Pleaseee!! I need transcriptions (partiture) of this!! Awesome!
Hey Sergio Moreno A friend of mine, AlexJadidrummer , made a transcription of this. You can either search "AlexJadidrummer" here on UA-cam and find his channel where he posted two great videos of my hybrid shuffle and in the description there's a link to the transcription he did. Or you can find it here: www.mediafire.com/view/?kknb1f1cbjjvf6c
