  • I take my ebike beach cruiser out for a test in the rough, soft sand around Fort Fisher, North Carolina. I need my beach ebike to get me fishing in a remote location. After running the Magicycle ($100/$250 discount code below) electric beach cruiser through its paces in the soft, mush, and hard sand, I am thrilled with it. I think it is the best electric beach cruiser for me! If you need a beach e-bike, pay attention to my bike review. These bikes are not for kids. I recommend you be at least 18. Also, check that the front wheel quick release is tight before using. #magicycle
    Sadly, I have to add an affiliate link for the ebike. I lost my iPhone in the ocean and needed to replace it. Expensive!!!

    Fun video, Steve. This is my first time to your channel. I'm watching as many reviews as I can about this bike. I won't be riding it on sand, but it's good to know the extra tire width helps out on soft, uneven surfaces. I ordered one of these today that my wife and I are going to review on her UA-cam channel. Looking forward to riding this around Peoria, IL. It will be a nice upgrade to my 1981 Schwinn LeTour Tourist 10-speed and my 1995 Schwinn Cruiser (100th anniversary bike) that I've been riding for years now. I'm turning 65 this year and looking forward to a little electrical assist. Have fun fishing with your new mode of transportation!

      It took me a bit to get my head around the electric. Then, I realized the power replaces a complicated set of gears. My mountain bike has 21 gears - this has 7 - but the power assist provides the grunt work of the lower range. I usually run this at 30% assist on level ground with being able to pedal strongly, with decent resistance, in gear 7. I have about 30 miles on it and it still shows almost fully charged. Pedaling really extends the range.

      @@KayakhacksFishing - super. It will take me awhile to get used to it as well. I figured that the motor power would compensate for the lack of gears. Can't wait to try this on some of our bluff hills. I'm sure it will be a major improvement. This will be my first introduction into E-bikes. I'm sure it will be a fun adventure, but as you mentioned, will take some time to get used to juggling the power assist with the proper gears.

      @@larryware1 It is amazing how far you can go if you continue to pedal and just use the motor for a little extra push.

    I ride my fat bike on the beach all the time. In soft sand I decrease my tire psi to 4 front and 5 rear. The mushy tires make it so much easier to control and the ride is nice and cushy. Don’t forget to add some air when you go ride elsewhere.

    • @LukeAMcDowell

      You’ll have to get a psi gauge that only goes to 15. You’ll never get an accurate reading with a normal gauge.

    I watched a previous video where you said that you were going to carry your cast net on the front of the bike. That weight on the front tire will totally change the handling in the soft sand.

  • @retnav92
    @retnav92 2 роки тому +1

    Nice video, Steve. What tire psi are you running? Recommendation, if you're not already doing it, is to carry a few spare zip-ties. If you inadvertantly dump the bike and it causes the milk crate to separate from the bike, you'll need a means to reattach it. Also some for reattaching cable/wiring runs along the frame if you have to remove and change a flat rear tire.

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  2 роки тому +1

      @@KayakhacksFishing Are you riding them at 7psi on the street also? I run mine around 9.5 - 10psi, and I have the Tannus Armour liners installed. If you do IG you can see a few pics of my rig at retnav1992 .

      @KayakhacksFishing  2 роки тому +1

      Nice! Looks like you have the same hitch as I do. Out bikes look very similar! I have been using 7 psi since that was the recommended pressure in the manual. I'll bump it up a bit for street. Have you come up with an easy way to load the bike other than lifting? I tried a DIY ramp ... fail... I'll try a different design.

    • @retnav92
      @retnav92 2 роки тому +1

      @@KayakhacksFishing When loading, I grab the bike below the lower frame where the tube meets the top crossbar tube below the handlebars, and set the front wheel in first, then grab the rear cargo carrier and swing the rear of the bike up into the carrier. Putting the front tire in first provides a nice pivot point, and lessens the total weight lifted. Getting it off the carrier is in the reverse order, rear tire first, then the front. I also place a piece (about 6" long) of pre-cut pipe wrap (pool noodle would work also) on the top bar to keep the bike rack device (even though it's rubber wrapped) that slides down onto the bar from eating-up the paint on the bike. I'm picky about my stuff, lol.
      Yesterday I just ord'd the new RadExpand5 folding bike (20" tires) for my 15yo grandson to use. It'll keep him off my bike. Looks like I'll be toting two ebikes now. The RadExpand5 comes with fenders and rear rack for $1299, so couldn't pass it up. :)

      Yes, all the ebikes I have used have an easier way. You press and hold one of the control buttons (usually the minus button to drop the assist level) and the bike engages at a very low speed. It is called "walk assist."

    Awesome video. One of a kind. One question: have you tried airing down the tires? If so what pressure is best. I ask because a lot of the terrain on SE florida is soft sand and the tidal swing is not that big. Also there is much sargassum laid on the beach. I'm really interested in this bike and appreciate your reply. Can I contact you directly to understand more about your experience?

      The tire pressure is 7 psi on the bike right now. I am reluctant to air it down farther out of fear of the tire popping out of the rim. Since is handle mushy sand just fine - the loose sand is the issue - I do not see the need to change it further. Sure- my email is steve@kayakhack.com

    Steve, Thanks for the in depth review about using the Magicycle Cruiser on sand. I have been shopping around for sometime for a Ebike that I could use to take fishing on the beaches in San Francisco and also something strong enough to pull a small cart with a 100lb dog in it. I only way 140# so the total weight I figure is still weigh under the Magicycle carrying capacity. My big concern is how this bike can handle steep hills because San Francisco is all about hills. Have you had any experience with the bike on steep grades (20 degrees or more ?)

    • @KayakhacksFishing
