Questions for you guys: When your parents retire, can't work anymore, and are too old to take care of themselves, how will each one of you step in (if at all) to take care of them until they finally pass? Next question: Say none of your siblings can take care of them either and now it's up to you to make the final decision, what's your move? My parents are reaching that old age and me and my siblings do not want to take them into our households. If they were to live with me, while I'm raising a family, I feel like they will piss me off so much and I don't want my future kids to see that side of me and I don't want that stress in my life. Then again, putting them into a nursing home feels like I stopped caring about them cause I'm Asian. I'd like your guys' perspective, especially from Bart and Jo
I know you want to get the guys perspective on this, and it is a good idea as a prompt. I can't speak from an Asian perspective, yet I can give you some helpful suggestions as a person who cared for my mom till she passed, and now cares for my dad with my adult son's help, and at times my sister's help as well. And sorry in advance if you already know/have thought of any or all of this unsolicited advice I am about to put forth. Make sure that any legal documents are up to date and in place. Power of Attorney, Healthcare Proxy, Wills, M.O.L.S.T. or advanced directive (which has their final medical wishes written out over what they would want when the time comes). My dad, for instance has said that he doesn't want extraordinary measures taken if it comes to that. He even said that if we don't follow his directives he will come back and haunt us. Make sure to have the legal right to speak on their behalf when it comes to medical decisions and insurance. In my dad's case, my older brother is his POA, yet his Healthcare proxy is my older sister, my older brother and myself. Separately though I had to also make sure the doctors' offices have it known that they can discuss my dad's medical care with any of the three of us, or my son as well. And make sure their insurance company has a copy of their POA/Healthcare proxy agreement, or they most likely will give you crap when you try to speak to them on your parents' behalf. Also, make sure there is a rights of survivorship, TOD or beneficiaries on any and all of their financial accounts. Learned that lesson the hard way after my mom passed, and we had to use a lawyer to transfer her bank account over to my dad because even though they were still married and he was her POA, the bank wouldn't transfer the funds without him being listed as a beneficiary on her account. So after she passed, my dad's lawyer suggested we do all of the above mentioned things on all of my dad's accounts. My dad also made sure we got a joint account so if anything were to happen with him, I would still have access to the account to make sure the bills could get paid. No matter which course of action you choose, in terms of at home care or finding a facility, it would be wise to speak to a social worker specializing in eldercare to learn your options and what resources are available. It would also be wise to check if their insurance would help to pay for a facility or which facilities, or aide/nursing assistance for at home care. You will definitely want backup to help or you will indeed eventually feel burnt out. Learned that the hard way as well. Took a meeting with the social worker for my siblings and I to get on the same page, for them to realize that I needed help caring for our parents, along with getting an aide service to give me a bit of a break when I was caring for my mom who had MS. Now my sister comes over and stays with our dad for a couple hours on the weekend while my son and I run errands. Be sure that if you do go the facility route that you do your research ahead of time over costs, reviews, what care the facilities actually provide, staffing, etc. Same as well if you get at home aide services. For the at home aide service we used for my mom, we had to pay out of pocket to get her the care we wanted. Hope some of what I have said will be helpful to you or anyone else who finds themselves in this position. Best of luck to you in whichever direction you choose to go with. And hopefully the guys will give their perspectives in a future episode as well.
Oh, I will also add that one of the reasons we didn't go with a facility is because my dad said, "no nursing homes". His reason being was because he didn't want to be separated from my mom. He had seen that happen with other couples he knew, where if one partner required more care than the other, they might not be able to be together in the same nursing home.
