Wow Tim, I liked the first two techniques, just because they do not tie you into using dubbing. The dubbing ball has been a suggestion to me before and I have never used it. I sometimes take the fibers I want to use and separate them and then carefully bring the microfibbetts to the flame of a bic lighter after making sure they are crossed. Be patient because if you move the fire or the microfibbitts to fast they just burn. but if you go slow you get a ball in the plastic small enough to tie in.

Hi Baldeagle; you absolutely could use those strands from a paintbrush. Try to find the color(s) to match the natural(s) you're imitating and tie a few. If those fibers are able to hold the fly with enough strength, I would definitely continue using them. Good luck!
Two more ideas. First, your extra piece of thread technique #2 also works for flies with 3 tails, too. Just carefully split into thirds rather than halves. The middle third goes between the two thread ends you pull up and points straight back. Second, you can do single or double wrap figure 8s on the tails also.
