I try and make an oil filter inspection video every Friday on this UA-cam channel, Thank You!
We need a list of filters that have holes instead of louvers , no excess sloppy glue, and bypass valve that passes the flashlight test.
Fond du Lac, Wisconsin! Woohoo! I was born there. Never lived there. Just hatched one stormy night. Never to return. 🤠
😊 small world
Wix switched to same backing(polymer) as Puro Boss (both M&H cos), a while ago. Just haven't updated box yet. Imo and in my observation, polymer backing every bit as good and durable as wire. The Mercury filter looks like a Premium Guard made filter, likely a blended media. Said before, can't directly compare synthetic vs cellulose/blended media area. It's depth media (syn) vs surface media. Honesty, I'd use any of the filters. All things considered, likely give FE the edge. Thanks for vid.
You're Welcome faxmen09👍
Just started using the Fram Endurance on my Honda Accord. Looks like a quality filter for sure.
Looks are not everything/ sometimes not anything.
We should never judge a book by its cover. God does not judge us by our appearances, but by our hearts.
@@operationoverloard not sure what your comment implies. He took those filters apart piece by piece to "look" at them.
Plus, I'm talking about an oil filter and you're speaking on God? I know He is everywhere, but in an oil filter video?
Which oil filter would God use?
@@Sw-so4zj you sound about as smart as Wile E Coyote.
I wouldn't hesitate to use the Fram, but i'd give the edge to the Wix XP. And for the record...i'm a P1 Boss guy.
I love Whip's microscope work, really helps give a great idea on filtering performance.
Another great review, cheers Pete!!!😊
Thanks, Cheers!!😊👍
I know! I've seen other filter review vids and The Whip City Wrencher beats them all,
@@jamescaron6465 He does, he clearly deserves more subscribers!
@@ChrisPatrick-q6kyea 100%!
I would go with the "Fake FRAM " aka FRAM Endurance which isn't even made by FRAM but by Champ Labs for FRAM.... still wouldn't use it for 25 000 miles though, about 5 or 6K
Sounds like it's the same filter as the Amsoil or VP Racing filter also made by Champion Labs.
I have to question the wix ! The box shows a metal backing and rated at 35 micron - the fram has a true metal backing and good filter media ! The mercury is clean and has more pleats plus a " boing boing " coil spring but not so great filter media ! I prob would take the fram for the win on this one ! 👍
Thanks! Sure like the fact that you check the sq inch of the media. That fram sure seems like it is skimpy with the media for a high mileage filter.
Maybe next time you should make a point that the people (like your example) NEVER poke the plastic through the hole. Always peel it by the outside edge! Yes the plastic can break and get stuck in the filter then instantly get flowing around inside the engine. Most people don't know the mounting hole is the return of the flow, not the inlet.
Great Job, Pete and thanks for sharing, Tony. The Mercury Filter seems to be the best made, I like how clean it is, the coil spring and a core with holes and the extra media. The Fram uses nice media with that wire mesh backing but dang it is sloppy with the glue and I don't like that "stick on" bypass valve. It just seems cheap to me and could be prone to leakage. The Mercury filter media seems to be a standard cellulose. If you took the Wix media and stuck it into the Mercury filter, you'd have the perfect filter. The Wix wins on the media, bypass valve and cleanliness. But they are all nice filters.
Thanks, Jim
and Thanks for you're feedback.👍💯
@@WhipCityWrencher You're very welcome, Pete. Thanks for the great vids!
I use the original Toyota filter on my vvti tundra. Wanting to try the six xp cuz it mimics the Toyota filter in “free flowing” but probably catches more. Vvti system uses motor oil like hydraulic oil that’s why I’m looking for similar pressure.
So nice of Tony!
Another great comparison! 👍
Thanks, Ella👍💯
@@WhipCityWrencher 👍😊
Very Nice Comparison you do a great job 💯
Thank You I appreciate it😊👍
I don’t even have to watch the video. I will re comment if I change my mind but almost certainly it’s, Wix XP for the win! Thanks again for the exposure to all this neighbor!
You're Welcome👍
Please watch it dude!!! It was very good
@@ChrisPatrick-q6k totally did. Watch a lot of this guy.
Those filters also fit GM LS engines from 07-13. Nice to see the comparisons between them. The Mercury looks just like the new Carquest premiums. Thanks for sharing!
You're Welcome👍💯
Nice quality!
The Florida pool pump motor repair guy 32750 approved ! that was good info & see WCW
Thanks, Jay👍💯
I would use any of the three filters. However, the sloppy glue on the Fram makes an observant person wonder if it was someone’s first day on the job. The glue does not really deteriorate or dissolve in the oil but it takes away from the professional workmanship in the manufacturing process.
Thank s
You're Welcome👍
Whip City Wrencher makes Fridays worth waiting for! (especially since I have up drinking)
Winner = Mercury hands down. Holes are binary (there or not) and open flow, louvers can fluctuate in opening width. Hard to tell bad louvers without destroying the filter (or your engine). Fram also still carrying its inherent design flaw - using leaf spring as a plug in center tube passes dirty oil...
This filter fits some GM V-6 and V-8.
Considering the size range that the mercury filter apparently covers, might be worried to put the wix on the bigger V8s if it might be too restricted.
I bought the bigger wix for my diesel. It has holes instead of louvers .
Fram for the win
No clear winner in this one. All 3 have things I really like in a filter and all 3 have areas where they disappoint.
For the Mercury, it has easily the most filter media but doesn't list micron rating or efficiency, as well as the lack of synthetic media.
The Fram had the synthetic media but was chintzy with it along with the sloppy gluing.
The Wix had the flimsiest can as well as being the lightest of the three, but at least gave you more media than the Fram while not as sloppy in the gluing.
My ideal filter, which doesn't exist here, would have the Mercury's heft and overall construction, along with the same amount of filter media, but synthetic like the Wix XP or Fram Synthetic Endurance.
Thanks for your feedback😊👍
The Mercury box said 1/1000 of an inch. Converting to metric, that's 25.4 microns
😊
The Fram filter media does look the tightest in the microscope view. It has the shortest length of filter media therefore I don't believe it's good up to 25,000 miles as advertized. But did you notice the marketing trick?
It states that it can filter 99% of dirt "greater than 20 microns".
"Greater than 20 microns" can equal 35 microns like the Wix brand filter advertizes. It's a suckers tactic with advertizing; the Fram filter never stated that it included 20 microns. They've always had great marketing people to sucker you into buying their junk.
I still like the fact that the Mercury and Wix filters had more filter media. In my personal situation, I would use the Mercury or Wix for the facts I don't "extensively beat" on my engines, nor run them extremely hard for long periods of time.
It's been said that "I change clean oil", I've never blown engine because of it. Yes I've had some used engines quit running on me that others maintained, but I've repaired the engines and drove them many years and miles afterwards.
Where do you get your oil filter canister cutters? Please send me the link or address without the .coms, .or nets, etc... because sometimes this phone will not follow links sent to me.
Thank you for your interesting and informative videos. (I love the specs posted) Stuff like this matters to people like me and many others.
Thank you for your replies in the past.
You're Welcome👍
Fun fact: Plastic _is_ a polymer.
You should include the micron rating
I do when I can find it, 6:53 7:52 I couldn't find any specs on the Mercury oil filter. 8:08
I won't go 25000 miles on a oil filter.maybe 10000.,🤔
Could u do a hydrogear filter
It will be a while but what size do you want to see?
I think most hydrogear are the same but I have a 2800
And like to see one that size
There is not a filter that Fram makes, that I would use. Would run either of the other two without any worries.
Thanks for Sharing👍
Fram doesn't make the synthetic endurance, champion labs does fwiw.
I would be more likely to buy the Fram if it was sold under the Champ label
Not like it matters. The fram and wix filters dont cross to the mercury.
I don't care for filters with screens or wire mesh baking. It has to decrease oil flow.
Must say, I've never cut open a used one that's collapsed, although I'd say the effect on flow is minimal.
Well, then you won't be using any full synthetic media oil filter, because they all require some backing for support. Never seen any evidence that the backing restricts oil flow and synthetic media more flow friendly, not that it really matters in passenger vehicle use.
Those are the only ones I'll use these days. Thanks for your feedback👍
I think your concern about flow are unwarranted. Wire backed media was first implemented in oil filters for big diesel engines like Detroit, Caterpillar, and Cummins. They were implemented when the oil change intervals were extended in these engines. They’ve been used for years without any problems whatsoever.
Hilarious! Fram has a metal mesh on the coil less lengh extra glue , sloppy design of Protection filter. In contrast, WIX has a better material design even mercury filter has a better filtering components. Plus forgot the microscopic microns view. And you would pick Fram?? 😬 Yikes!
14:21 I didn't pick any filter, IMHO all three have their good and bad points.
I heard you said mercury firts for lube then fram for microns quality. Again, wix then mercury have better quality
The wix xp has a terrible efficiency rating.
@@hosepipe depending on the car and oil intervals. I would only use it up to 4K the efficiency should be provided by the quality of fully brand syntetic oils not a blended or mineral.
Oil Filter Friday!!
I've been using the Fram Ultra on my 5.0 F150 since new in 2017. The new Endurance seems to be similar to the original Ultra when it still had wire backing.
I'm sticking with Fram... but wouldn't hesitate to use the Wix if needed.
👍🏾
Yup , same here !
If it ain’t broke , don’t fix it !
2007 Accord coupe 6 cylinder.
Fram Ultra Synthetic filter.
SuperTech full synthetic 5w20.
All for $28.97.
I’m a DIY’selfer and save big time. Have you seen what most shops want for a full synthetic oil change ?
By the way , I’ve got 192,000 miles , and she purrs like a kitten.
Spic&Span clean.
Not a drop on the driveway.
Thanks for reading my comment.
Have a wonderful life.
Like Rodney Dangerfield once said , on your way to No.1 , be careful not to step on No.2.
I like the frame endurance a lot.its on my Ford 150 now..yes .
The color of the endcaps, the coil spring, the spacers on the base end and the way the bypass valve is attached to the endcap lead me to believe the Mercury filter was made by Sakura in Indonesia. The only telltale Sakura sign that is missing is the cup on the end of the coil spring. See previous videos with Sakura C-1821 and Subaru 15208AA20A for reference.
Hi Jeff
You could be right😊
Good comparison. Mercury filter looks good. TFS Pete, have a good weekend 😊
Thanks, Merri

Good day friend great info 👍
Thank You👍💯
These also fit my ‘07 Chevy 4.8L. I sometimes use the Wix XP. Looks like a good filter!
