Thanks, Pete, awesome job! They are nice and clean, except for the baseplates, they look like they came out of the same assembly line. You could swap the filter media in each without knowing the difference. I guess the Boss filter has a nicer paint job. I'd give the edge to the XP just for the baseplate, but I do have a boss on the Matrix right now and I am glad I do. I have an XP on the shelf and I will put it in the next time I change the oil. Great to have the peace of mind knowing I did put a good filter in. That car is her bread and butter.

Good Idea have Pete open those two oil filters up James! Now we all know! Btw I’m on my 2nd oil Change now, using the 15w40 Royal Purple with a qt of Seafoam. It’s running amazing. I put a K&N Reusable Oil Filter on it. There were expense back in the day $400-$500. But they are great Oil Filters. And they have a magnet in them. Thank you again for the suggestion. The white residue on the WIX anti-drain back valve is probably a mold release agent.
It’s a sort of lubricant/not-sticky coating that gets sprayed into the mold so that the parts don’t stick to the metal mold.

In my opinion, the only thing that really matters is the media and bypass spring. Some of the build quality stuff appears a little betterthen others but I have never had an issue with can thickness, failed o-ring, or threads. I want a great filtering filter with a bypass valve that opens and closes properly and doesnt leak. I watched another video of filters being tested and oil was get through the bypass valve with clean fluid, clean filter, and warm oil. So not cold oil or plugged filter. If they come out of the same factory or manufacturer, the Boss could have better filter rating due to the slightly thicker media. Im not an oil or filter expert but I do own a company with hard use commercial vehicles and have been through tens of millions of mile in oil changes.

Both very similar. Boss made by Purolator (Fayettville NC), XP could be made at Wix plant, but hard to say 100%. XP baseplate is Wix design, flat spring bypass on both, long time Purolator design. M&H is moving Wix design more towards Purolator. Both look well-made, polymer backing works well. Like both US made. Good filters, imo. Thanks for the vid. 👍

I remember back when the Purolator Boss was introduced, it was advertised as "only available at" the specific retailer. I don't think it's still exclusive, but the altered baseplate seems like a way to use mostly the same parts to make two "different" filters so that exclusivity could be claimed.
I like the price and paint color better on the Purolator Boss, but for functionality, I'd go with the Wix XP, only because of the larger baseplate holes.

Wish the Purolator had the larger inlet holes. The filter media does appear the same visually, but the Brand Ranks video showed that the Purolator did a significantly better job at filtering small particles. It must have like an extra layer of fine media in there or something, despite looking the same. Maybe there is some variation in other filter sizes.

The larger inlet holes would most likely increase flow. With that increase in flow it could possibly force larger particles through the filter.

The box it came in says its a wix xp superior filtration for full synthetic oils and the filter matches whats pictured on the box. I also just cut open a 57502XP and it has a synthetic filter media and I ordered both filters from rock auto. I don't understand why they would get rid of the synthetic filter and the wire or mesh backing and still call it a wix xp made. Both also say made in usa. I stopped using the Wix filters 2 1/2 years ago as the quality of the particular ones I was using slipped too much. Most of any of these filters you really need to compare them all number by number. Even though they're owned by the same parent corp, early on in the purchase, they both had separate tooling, supply sources and manufacturing. As one would expect, Mann would begin over time through attrition or aging, streamlining or consolidating the supply materials and processes of both brands. Wix was always in Gastonia as far as I can remember. Purolator ended up in Fayetteville more recently. This is all too common when these large trans national conglomerates buy up the competition. You said clearly that you would go for the wix but they both idénticas and Boss has the thiner bubber where the filter sits on the oil housing of the car and wix is thicker But as usual you missed the microscopic quality example of the filter mesh being more solid and sticky when the xix was more spread lose noticeble on the screen. Again you need get after 5k syntetic oil test on both cut-open and you will be really surprised how ugly the wix turns out. Plus the metal quality of the wix is as much as Fram. Go figure!

The only difference I saw between the two is the base plates.

Well on your next filter review you should address these concerns. Looking forward to your video effort 😊
