I take apart and repair some failing buttons, clean gunked up terminals, and also install an electrical tape mat to help prevent knob jitter on my Korg EMX-1
This offering is a real gear saver for me. Love emx 1! The best artifacts! Thank you for the detailed demonstration. I do believe I can fix my machine now. Ya'he🙏🎶🐉
Electrical current over the contact of two points can have a chemical interaction with elements in the environment, and will leave corrosive build up or attract elements to the surface of those contacts. That is why over time you will develop those trace corrosion. Electric current helps speed this process up. Look up electrolysis and how galvanization works. The knob jitters could be a few things. The same effect of the contact points on the potentiometers can cause resistance hotspots where the value isn't being properly reported back to the controller board, and thus the machine goes with whatever wonky values are coming in, causing little jumps and jitters. Another possibility for the jumps and jitters is a solder joint becoming lose and making intermittent contact with the circuit board it's mounted to. This happens a lot with all types of electronics, where the physical mounting point is not reinforced securely, and the load of use is putting pressure on the soldering points instead. Those solder points are like a paperclip being bent back and forth. Eventually it breaks and you'll need to re-solder those points. Alcohol 91% is great for cleaning contact points and corrosion. It loosens this stuff right up and washes it off, at the same time dissipates moisture away. Right now, I miss my EMX-1 because I have no power adapter for it that works. Mine died. Next step is to refurbish to "Like New" with the whole recalibration process. I wish I knew someone who has tackled this process before, as I can tell something is off on the EMX, and I've had to repair disconnected wires inside, and I feel something isn't 100% back to normal. Anyone out there in my boat with more success, I would be delighted to lean more... I don't have an electronics major, but it's tempting to go get one just to fix the EMX-1 !!!! HAHA
Yo! I did this yesterday and it worked a dream for main encoder= www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=74154 . Turns out the gel that makes the dial turn smoothly seems down to the contacts. so happy it worked. Thanks for this video, helped me take it apart a lot. Cheers, off to play emx!
Because of these machine is bought second hands down from many people we don't how many of them is smokers and therefore is best to clean the emx everywhere to get the nicotine smell and dirt out
On my emx, i have some bad contacs on almost every synths and drum pads. I still can play but i have to push stronger on the pads. Does anybody knows how can i repair this?
I have all that same failures on my EMX-1 and also the same issue with the main encoder is happening with all rotary and linear encoders on my Korg Kontrol49 MIDI controller. I think this issues belongs to the encoders. Because it's a usual failure that most Korg devices have. If anyone knows something to fix this encoder issues, please comment below.
Stephen Heyerdahl i felt it had enough information to help some people out and maybe create some good conversations on how to keep these machines running.
@@saulpimon8406 👍😀 ye man I was scratching me head so weird, keep up the good work and I hope your playing your emx1. What a machine the work flow is amazing on it especially when you know how to use it.Very hard to put down. Check out a guy called " mistabishi-uncut mix" there is 2 videos 15mins long of this legend he knows the emx like the back of his hand. Bad visual quality but the sound is better than any production I've heard on such a small scale. That's why I bought an emx cuz of this dude. Enjoy bro.
Thanks for making this. Music is cool too. Respect

Thanks for making this! I was able to save my Emx-1 that was a jittery paperweight!
Best video on UA-cam! Helped me a ton!

Thank you
The internet should be taken with a grain of salt
Fixed my issue- cheers!
how about the ribbon controller/arp mine stopped functioning just recently. Any ideas? thanks for your time & efforts!
disassemble and clean that bish, thats really your best bet, check connections as well. replacement isnt bad on those if its shot.
Either this is great comedy, or we're all fucked.
It hurts how unscientific this video is lol but thanks for sharing

Spray some DeoxIT into the the base of the encoder (you will have to open it up to get to it).
id like to replace the encoders some day if i can find a good source
yes i want to do this

you posted an over-long, annoyingly stuttery tutorial on how to fix knob jitters - and then! at the end, it's not fixed!?? Why would you post this?

magpie is that you??
Is it me or does this guy looks like Simon the magpie in some weird alternate universe.🤔
nine months ago i had no idea what you were talking about. just googled this dude and holy shit what a doppleganger
