  • It will have been the first real challenge for any Lynx, a giant that roamed the land and filled the sky with its missiles. The Spirit of Motherwill may have been the stepping stone for strayed, but for others it was an icon that showed the true might of corporations.

    One interesting tidbit is how in the intro cutscene we can see fighter jets take off from Motherwill's hangers. Imagine the Motherwill deploying them during the Hard Mode version of the mission when Strayed gets close instead of Champion-Champs just being there for some bizarre reason.

      I mean not only would that be very cool and maybe kill the frame-rate. But it would be more lore friendly and the decks or wings of Motherwill should be filled with more normals and Mts to keep in line with how much fire power this armsfort really had within it.

      Like he said, it probably wasn't done in-game due to framerate issues even if it would've been amazing.
      My guess is this also applies to other arms forts.

      Late to the party but I agree with this. SoM was designed similarly to an aircraft carrier. It's only main weapons were the cannons which isn't an issue once you're in close range.
      In the intro, WG had some trouble not because of the arms fort itself but because there's just an overwhelming amount of normals and MTs. Something we don't deal with in the game but there is enough to put some pressure on the player.
      Obviously it's due to engine limitations but I'd like to imagine it's probably because of numerous attacks on the arms fort as well, whittling down their numbers and capable forces to a more manageable size

      That's admittedly why I'm a tad miffed that Armored Core 6 didn't at least try to go for semi-open world. Imagine having Arms Fort enemies as field bosses for the player to gradually match up to, or serve as bases(bonfire checkpoints). There is so much intuitive gameplay to be had, unless of course the mission based system maintains steps they learned from Elden Ring.

    I wonder if there were more Motherwill class Arms Forts walking around. It'd have big implications either way - either BFF didn't commit all their assets during the economic war, or they were too broke to make more than one of it. An improved version without the glaring weakness of structural damage from weapon destruction would probably be impossible for anyone but the player to destroy.

      An interesting idea. As although BFF where helps back onto thier feet by GA they became the second largest company in the European region by the time of Armored Core: For Answer. So many they were holding back or maybe the heads at the time where heavy influenced by GA to not make more. Either way if there had been more motherwills i suspect a lot more next pilots would have died and that they would have been quite the force for orca to deal with.

    An interesting thing I found out about SOM when looking at a page with size comparissons - it was indeed stated there that the height of the SOM is 600 meters, and White Glint was also depicted next to SOM, as stated there, WG height is 10 meters. However, if you stack those WGs ontop of each other, it will take 29 WGs in total to reach the top of SOM, meaning that Motherwill might be shorter than 600 meters

    One of my favourite Arms Fort design from FA! It's the kind of bulky design, coupled with sensible lore bit (that it's an outdated craft built by a now defunct corporation) that made it truly memorable. In certain fashion you could say this old hog of a machine served as the stepping stone for the Strayed. Kind of intriguing, as the new White Glint (Old Anatolia's Mercenary) also solidified their reputation through the brutal dismantalling of BFF as well.
    Another thing I'm still curious about: since BFF is essentially gone by the point of ACFA, which group is still operating SoM? I assume they would be former BFF combatants that's now essentially gone independent right?

    • @armoredcorelore
      @armoredcorelore  2 роки тому +15

      Oh i like that. The same corporation being used as the way to raise our heroes status, makes you think someone had it out for them. And to answer your question BBF is still operating in acfa, as anatolia's mercenary only took out the leadership with his attack on White Lance leading to the corporation through nationalistic centripetal force to regain their once lost assets and become the second largest company in the European region. This was also helped by GA who would acquire a large portion of BFF during this time.

    Destroy the fully loaded canon -> the ammo explode and created chain reaction -> blowing up the amunition storage -> explode from inside cause the cooling to fail.

    I feel like SOM is sort of the ideal parallel to Orbital Lasers in Scifi.
    Like, if an Orbital Laser is judgement from the heavens, then SOM is the domination of the world from within the bounds of said world.
    It is essentially a massive tank capable of carrying and launching its own air support while also featuring main guns that would likely be more than capable of assaulting offshore vessels from the coast.

    • @armoredcorelore

      It is and its a shame the Som we see in the game is very much watered down, the arms-fort should be filled to the brim with normals and air support. A resupply issue? That would be a neat idea as to why Motherwill is so empty. However i think strayed battle with motherwill would been just like White Glints, after all i don't think GA and BFF would have one of their prized War machine lacking in numbers.

      @@armoredcorelore Though BFF and GA could have also seen that farther investment in Motherwill would be a loss, and what was actually needed was a full retrofit. Especially, now that its weakness was public knowledge. So, wasn't worth resupplying.
      There is also some issue with we don't get a good feel of the time line. In the fight we do see that not all missile launchers are back in operation. Is that a lack of supplies or are repairs taking that long?
      However, if we are being totally honest you are probably right, and the technology for having that many Normals on screen just wasn't worth it.

    • @armoredcorelore
      @armoredcorelore  2 роки тому +1

      @@slowjamsliver7006 Oh i like this. Its these conversations that make the old ac brain tick.
      Both of these are very good reasons for the lack of normals as we know there is time line conflicts within the series.
      Like the sea of blood battle in AC4 where Armored Core 4 establishes that the battle between Anatolia's Mercenary and the Aldra Original Sherring in "Sea of Blood" took place shortly before the Lynx War whereas Armored Core: A New Order of "NEXT" considers it a part of the conflict.
      But yes putting aside the lore hat for a second. It is very unlikely that the ps3 or xbox360 could handle that many on the screen, i know the ps3 stuttered on the mission defend the anti satellite cannons.

    • @slowjamsliver7006
      @slowjamsliver7006 2 роки тому +2

      @@armoredcorelore Yeah, but no one likes admitting to limitations, and certainly not me.
      So, my head cannon is they White Glint did a lot of work before we got there, and they for at least one of those reasons there were very few Normals active in our fight against Motherwill.
      Though now that I think about it there would also have to been internal damage already. Odds are they were also short crew, and pilots from the battle with White Glint. It is possible they lost enough crew and pilots that there weren't enough trained pilots to name the Normals. Odds are that they missiles and guns were more important especially since they probably weren't only going to fight Nexts. Normals are good but if the enemy never gets to you that is even better.

That _thing_ is a freaking giant, with a grand majority of its mass going only to its giant legs. Uh, yeah, of course taking out *any* major part of the upper area would cause it crumble into itself. In my mind of Canonical lore, AF Cabbracan was destroyed, not Spirit.
    BFF realising that to build a another Spirit Class AF of the same size would incredibly expensive, they downsize the design to just above half the Size of the OG variant and Compartmentalised the flight decks and other sections into modules to ease construction and to help with the flaw of magazine detonations.
    To further decrease the chances of detonation, the weapons which used explosive propellant where swapped out with railguns (including the 2 main triple turrets on the top central section) and energy weapons (the only exception CWIS and Missiles launchers)
    Bulkhead doors and more advance Ammo handling was integrated for the CWIS and Missiles.
    A newer smaller reactor with better cooling, protection and power output was installed on the newer smaller variant. Mainly to cope with newer energy consuming weapons
    BFF went out of its way to improve Damage control on the Spirit Class AF to make sure fires and other damage could be dealt with fast and efficiently, with better crew training and equipment.
    The one seen ACVD was one of the newer smaller ones that the faction who claimed it didn’t install the safety systems which resulted in its demise.

    I love this mission. Unlike with some other stuff that's been talked up in the series, like the silent avalanche in AC4, here you really feel the struggle fighting it. From trying to get close to it to the relentless missile barrages. While it is ultimately not that tough once you have the tactic and an AC set up for it, when I first got this mission I thought it was way too early.
    Only thing I wish is that the hard version was set up differently. Maybe have SoM take more hits to fall apart, to let ammo be more of a factor. Could also let more troups launch at some point or come in from the outside, like if they had been called back from a mission to defend the arms fort.

    1) The sheer shock from every step it took must've been so bad that the crew would be alerted to leave the leg modules before it could move, not to mention the damage it would cause to the structure itself. Why GA chose legs ? i dunno but its quite funny.
    2) The upside-down turrets must've been held in place by god almighty otherwise they would simply rip themselves from the structure, meaning it requires more steel to be able to hold them compared to the normal topside turrets, which means more weight for the launchpads, which would require more material for its attachment joint to be sturdy, which means even more weight- ok i'll stop there.
    3) Why cannons for its main battery? They could've just used cruise missile or something because that is a lot of weight plus how in the world is it even reloaded THAt fast, also the maintenance when the barrels are spent does it just mail order new cannon barrels?
    Motherwill looks cool tho I still love it, plus the lag it caused to my PS3 is unforgettable 😂

    You forgot the fact that the Spirit-Class was mass produced. You can find their wrecks (sometimes multiple if I recall) in the background on some levels, including the final battle with J.
    If I recall you have to take a different route from destroying Motherwill to get the actual canon ending, and I'm not sure if her destruction is detailed elsewhere, so it might be that she was never actually destroyed. Might just be that she was abandoned at some point, which would explain why so much of her hull is intact in Verdict Day.
