Pole Barn part 10: Exterior lights and electrical

- Well, it took more work than I expected, but there are lights on the outside of the shed now. The Barn style light over the entry door is mostly for character, I still will add some floods under the eve on that side, just haven't gotten that far yet. Note that electrical boxes are all temporary boxes until I can put the metal up.
nice to llive someplace without inspections! Here we have elec inspec for rough in - boxes, wires, panel, then finish - the system is hot with outlets, lights, switches, covers, etc.
how did you finish the concrete?
What happened to exterior lighting! Not the tour of your interior electrical
How did you mount the exterior J-box? Steel or plastic? counduit out the back and through the 2x4?
I braced 2x4 and or 2x6 material inside behind the tin, and then drilled a hole through using a 3/4" hole saw. I added a coupling and short length of conduit from backside of the boxes, and used that to run wiring into. I did have holes in the wood for these to go through. I added RTV to back of boxes, and then screwed through the tin in to the wood. This is VERY strong. Plastic or metal boxes are fine, just make sure they meet you local code.
Did you penetrate the posts to run electric rather than go to the outside .???
How did you mount your exterior lights to the wall? Did you find some boxes that accept the ribs of the metal?
If I mount my light in the center of my door, I’m sitting on a rib and looks like shit
The lights are mounted on small exterior grey metal boxes. I placed wood behind the tin inside, and screwed the boxes to into it. I drilled a hole for the wires. Box is siliconed all the way around and behind. You will have a hard time going over a large rib, it will take some creativity. Maybe you can artistically offset it?

Ok, the rib was my concern. You didn’t go over a rib by the sounds of it.
Thanks for the insight
No, I stayed in the flatter portion. Make certain you have a solid surface to mount to behind the metal. I used wood blocking and drilled the hole right through it.
Call Mini cars could you fit in those little bays going straight in could you fit 2 cars comfortably in a 1/2
If you don't mind please, what color choice and type of metal is that? I'm trying to pick out my 'Galvalume' colors for my barn projecct and like the color scheme you went with.
I have Ash Grey with Charcoal in the Pro-Rib from Midwest manufacturing. I am very happy with how the colors look against the white doors. Looking at your brand, Dove and Charcoal would be pretty close, but slate may also look good with charcoal. Can they get you sample panels?
I held some "key chain" samples of the metal and the printed brochure they gave me was an exact color match (at least on the printer and paper it was printed on).
William Posey, I think you will be happy if you get close, it looks so much better than the traditional tan/green!
For the two-tone on the outside lower (dark) panel, what "type" of transition trim is that? I assume you have a piece of the lighter color ran all the way and then the dark directly on top of that?
At the very bottom is a piece of bottom trim, then the wainsocting goes up into a piece of J Channel, and then the wall panel goes up into a piece of J-Channel that also has a frieze on it for the soffit.

Hey love the shop looks good what’s the total size and square feet
D Briggs 28x71 with a 14 foot ceiling height. Can't wait to finish, but real life keeps interfering!
Can you tell me where you got your barn lights. I am looking to add these to my shop
I bought the 110W SLB series lights from Aleo (the 95W is the same thing). There are a lot of manufacturers making a similar product, but the important part was that they were high bay LED lights. They cost about $100 ea. I bought them from LEDLIGHTINGWHOLESALE. Make sure you order the surface mount or pendant mount brackets if you need them!!! There are a bunch of threads about the lighting at Garage journal you may want to review to find the right lighting for your application. A guy called Platonic Solid really knows what he is talking about....

Sorry I was referring to your exterior lights. There are so many choices and some appear to be junk. Thanks for your help in advance
Oh, I bought them from Menards. The black on on the east side is a Pole barn light and cost about $100, and I used a fancy LED bulb that looks like an older Edison bulb. The ones for the North side are LED torches that were about $50 ea or so. Nothing super fancy, but they work nice.
Amazon
Where did you get the barn lights and how have they held up over the past year?
They have worked out great!

See the other reply on the interior and exterior lights....
@@ShopDog-Garage Hello. Wondering if you had any advice on what to put inside the pole barn as a backer for the exterior lights. Also, the pendant mount brackets, is that something that fills in the space between the exterior light and pole barn sheet metal that is ridged? Just wondering how people seal the hole since the metal is ridged.... Just built ours and learning. Thanks in advance for all your help. Looks great!
@howpeculiar I see the post below.... Other than silicone, I've got to imagine there is something out there like a heavy rubber or plastic with a gasket that aligns with the ribs of the tin and then has a flat back to meet the light or box. Thanks again for your help.
@@thechemistrylife6006 If you are still building, I recommend just adding a wooden plate in the area (use leftover 2x6 or 2x12). If you already have your tin up on the inside, it will be harder to add structure. You can surface mount a very light fixture to the tin, but it will be able to move. If at all possible, I really can't recommend enough that you run some wood between a few of the post or in the interior structure you added for the interior walls. Screwing into the wood is the strongest solution.
at 0:57 "and these boxes are temporary" if I had a dollar for every time I said that ha!!
Hey, its only a temporary repair if it doesn't work!
You have heated floors in that garage
no he spent it all on barn
Yes he does. The manifold is on the partition just above the floor.
