    This is brilliant! I’m in the process of installing steel siding in my shop to create a ceiling...and I’ve been stumped as to how to mark for the outlets that power the overhead lights. Problem solved!

      I have used this technique on drywall years ago. Works like a charm. I was bragging to my friend about how I came up with this idea, and she said that she knew someone that used the same technique. Guess I can't call it an original thought, but I'm glad to be able to share it. Thanks for taking the time to comment.......love that positive feedback, Alan!

    I appreciate the reply, that's kinda what I was thinking. Working on my barn right now. I think doing the interior in white metal is a great idea. easy to clean, bright, no painting. Thanks again!

      +1648jim I was re-reading your comment, and I thought of something to share with you. I would definitely recommend using metal interior...I love it.... especially since I weld in the barn. HOWEVER, there is a down side....
      I can't get cell phone reception in my barn now that the metal surrounds me. ALSO... I had to buy an Apple Airport in order to get Wifi out there. Just something to think about.

    Great idea. Don't forget to expand out your insulation. With it squoze down that flat, it won't do much insulating.

    an old Carpenter told me at least 30 years ago to mark receptacle and switch boxes with red lip stick to mark paneling and sheetrock. He use to tell me to keep red lipstick and a stick of candle wax in my tool belt. the wax was for the nails that we used to drive in Hardwood by using a hammer. Not like these day s with our nail guns.

    • @PhilCrockett
      @PhilCrockett  6 років тому +1

      People use to bore a hole down the end of their hammer handle, and fill it with wax. It made a handy well to dip the nails in to the wax.

    I use the same method but use the lead of my pencil instead. Drill one hole and use my tin snips to cut it out

      Norm, I'm so glad to hear that this worked out for you! That saw makes a heck of a racket doesn't it.... Hope you had some good ear protection. My dad and I use to cut metal by turning a circular saw blade backwards. We've done all kinds of stuff..... eventually you figure out an easier method. Thanks for the positive feed back!

    Hi. You need only 2 holes for Jigsaw, not 4, other than that, looks great to me. In California all sheet metal or aluminum must be grounded at the main grounding system, all boxes in commercial must be metal and fire sealed (Fire Barrier Moldable Putty Pads MPP+) if the structures are made by combustible materials, and all openings must be fire sealed, minimum 1h rated.

    • @PhilCrockett
      @PhilCrockett  4 роки тому +1

      true, but holes are ez to drill. Yes. The county I live in is one of the strictest counties for inspection. However, doesn't compare to the rules in California. The project in this video is for a barn with shop. A lot of the construction and such was definitely over-kill to meet our requirements. I'm not complaining though.... it's a quality building, and I spend more time out there, than I do in the house.

      A small side grinder with a thin metal cutting wheel is much faster and easier... No starter holes necessary.

    Great idea with the lipstick. I was going to try my Drywall method that I have a "template" that goes over the box, then you press on it, and it pokes holes on the backside of the drywall. I think I like this option better. Would probably work for the drywall too.

    • @PhilCrockett

    • @PhilCrockett

      Then you need to scab the box out from the stud until it clears the rib. I use leftover pieces of 2X4s for this.

      A sales lady ask if she could help me find something when I was at the store. I said "the cheapest lipstick you've got".... she asked if it was for Halloween (it was around that time of year)..... I said "Nope....it for electrical boxes".... it was a funny look on her face, and she just pointed down a hallway and continued to watch me the whole time I was in the store.

      Hello Phil, good come back by the way.
      I'm actually building an office/break room for a client and we will be installing 40 inches of metal at the bottom of the wall and wood the rest of the way up, he wanted rustic. I think your idea will help make the cuts faster and more accurate.
      Thanks

    • @PhilCrockett
      @PhilCrockett  7 років тому

      good deal. Just make sure you scab those boxes out to make sure they don't land on a rib. You definitely want them on the flat part of the metal well between the ribs.
