You have a great technique of presenting the weapon data and description while keeping the words flowing smoothly at a good pace. Lots of pertinent information minus the distraction of "ums" and "ahs" makes for an excellent presentation. Dismantling and reviewing the internal components for wear and quality of build is well appreciated and gives the viewer a perspective seldom seen among the many reviewers of firearms. Great Review: I actually picked up this Pistol yesterday. I found it on a lark and was surprised to see it at my local Base Exchange, I’m military retired. So I picked it up without hesitation because it’s a Dan Wesson. I’m now doing my homework on the pistol before taking it to the range but after purchase. I have the stainless version full-size ….actually would’ve preferred the Commander but I didn’t hesitate. I currently own a Kimber Ultra Carry II 3” (Yes I saw your Kimber related review 😁 🤦🏻♂️) and a Sig 1911 XO both of which I like but I can tell the DW is an entirely different league and I haven’t fired it yet. Also, I’m actually quite impressed with the grips I like how rough they are and how they stick to my hand. I know that’s gonna enhance shootability as far as I’m concerned. I want no movement and a tight grip and it was (at first) the most attractive feature from my perspective. I’ll let you know how I think it shoots but if I think a Kimber shoots good 😅 then this should be a dream come true. Also, I’ve also already ordered a set of those grips for my sig 1911. Did I mention those ole boys got my number on those grips 😂 Good review as usual by the way. Also, by the by, just before Christmas I picked up a Colt Python 4.25” and Boy Howdy what a pistol. My other 357 Magnum is a ….Kimber K6s 😂 ….so yes Colt is a better pistol. I can say that. Anyway forgive me I’m all giddy and excited about my new DW.

Thanks for the great review! Every website was out of stock for one of these, I went to my LGS and they had the stainless model in stock, 10mm. Walked out with it and they gave me two boxes of ammo along with it. Can't wait to see how it runs next weekend.

You can tell the women are not liking the recoil of that 45! Hell, to be honest, think I’d rather shoot the 9mm version! I don’t know..does that make me sound old? Anyways, like your reviews, love these DW guns
That Duty Treat is showing a lot of wear for 500 rounds. People on the forums claim to have thousands of rounds down range and their duty treat gun still looks news. Thanks for showing how the finish holds up when you're actually holstering and running the gun.
@@rangehot I wanted it for home defense, range and is in my carry rotation. Very accurate and fun to shoot. The grips are definitely aggressive, but I got used to them. My wife prefers her Vigil Commander in .45.
Would be interested in seeing how the 10mm version holds up. Have always eyeballed these as an option, but have always settled for custom offerings from the high-end elites of this market. I like this revision and am highly considering grabbing one for hard use. Also on the fence on whether the stainless or duty finish fits my needs better. Thanks for the video!
I can tell you I bought the test gun after the review and have been carrying and shooting it on the regular. Zero malfunctions but there is some wear on finish at the edges of the gun. I also have the Dan Wesson Razorback in 10mm and it has had zero problems and has held up well. I believe Dan Wesson has the 10mm 1911 figured out.
A lot of great options from Dan Wesson. @Justin_Opinion please take your pick and make a video! For me the ECO, Guardian are amazing. I'd love to get either the Specialist or Wraith next. You've got a great channel sir!
Yea, any correctly built 1911 will feed hollow points unless the magazine is crap. The Specialist had zero issues with reliability with all sorts of ammo types.
Recently purchased my first Dan Wesson. A Guardian in .38 Super. Haven't gotten it from my FFL yet, but I'm certainly looking forward to it. A specialist may have to be my next Dan Wesson. Great video.
Thank you very much Benjamin. I want a Guardian in Super .38 bad. Please let me know what you think about it when you get a chance to take it out. That is a way cool caliber.
Keep it up brother! Rangehot and Beretta 9mm some of the best gun videos on UA-cam. Appreciate it. Now if o my California would.lry me get some of these!
Hunter, hey bro, you have awesome channel. Big fan here! A question for you, I recently got a specialist and despite trying 5-6 different ammo brands, I am having hellova time with Failure to Feed issues. I have maybe 100 rounds thru it but it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I understand there is a 500 round break in period, but is it normal for it not to slowly start feeding better as more rounds are put thru it? I figured if there was an authority on YTB, you would be it😉. If you have the minute and the inclination, it would be so cool to hear your professional thoughts on that. Cheers! Oh it’s a 10mm for what’s it’s worth.
My first instinct would be a magazine problem. When you say failure to feed can you describe it? Is the round most of the way in the chamber or hung up off the feed ramp?
Solid review man, great looking gun. I enjoy that your dislikes are small FUDD tendencies. Front serrations & magwell. Totally get your dislike of front serrations, I used to be like you. Now I'm a fan of them. I agree magwells do bring their own set of issues like what mags can be used and not used but I love my magwells on 1911's. Keep it up!
Love mine. ..but. wonder what's causin all the rust issues I'm hearin?..I keep mine oiled and seein a hint comin on the top of the hammer....best gun channel on youtube....I've got a hunch you may know yer way around a German tree beaver also which is my second love....thanks hunter..matt from ky
I believe the steel DW uses on the hammer is not coated. I keep a light coat of oil on the hammer and it has not given me an issue. Funny you mention the German tree beaver as I am finishing a video on how to sharpen a chain on a saw. I used my older 066M, figuring I would add a little variety to the channel. I would love your input if you don't mind.
A Recon type dust cover? Oh my, I may have to readjust my priorities for my next gun purchase. That type of classic aesthetic with just a tiny bit of utility just makes me all kinds of happy.
I prefer a slide stop that protrudes for an additional reason. The size of my hand and length of my fingers on any 1911 I've handled I can use the protrusion to locate the pad of my trigger finger until time to put my finger on the trigger. This is a big advantage to me in having a safe and consistent grip and presentation. I've done this so many years that even if I pick up a bare frame my finger automatically goes to that position. This may not work for those with a larger hand.
Yes I really love mine Literally I have worn out 3 Les Baer’s over my LE career and so I went to the DW . My off duty carry weapon is a Nighthawk T3 and that is one fine weapon.
@@rangehot Im looking at a older Dan Wesson 10mm Patriot without the ramped barrel and its a pre CZ model, what do you think about the older non ramped barrel Dan Wesson 10mm 1911's?Thanks
@dickeymoore3662 I heard they were hit and miss before CZ but I cannot swear to that. My experience with Dan Wesson has all been after CZ took ownership and those pistols are exemplary.
Well, that is tough to say. When SS scratches it can be buffed out but the duty finish is quite hard. The SS may hold up a little better it will never have the character of a finished gun, in my opinion.
I added this 2020 Specialist in 10mm matte silver in my collection. What i notice tho is the feedramp is not on the barrel for your45? The 10mm the feed ramp is with the barrel. Does it make a difference?
Just ran across your channel. Great review! I love 1911’s, so I definitely will subscribe and check out your other videos. One of my goals is to one day feel confident in detail stripping one like you did. Not there yet, but that’s impressive. Thanks for the great content!
Thank you very much for all the kind words. We all have to learn as well all started out at the same place in knowledge. Keep at it and you will be far better than I.
@rangehot.com the specialist in 45 is my bedside gun, getting the vigil 9mm to shoot cheaper, and it may actually turn into My bedside gun if my wife can handle it. The 45 is a bit much for her, especially in a high intensity situation, I don't think it would be best for her. Gotta get her to shoot more to figure it out. If I'm not around, she needs to be able to handle what's in the nightstand
All excellent points. The .45 can be a bit much for many. I have been using the Specialist as my bedside gun with a light after it proved to be reliable. Good call on the Vigil in 9mm. Please let me know what you think of yours when you get it.
Thanks for another excellent review! I own a Vigil Commander, and I agree that DW 1911's are an amazing value! I don't mind front serrations on a 5", but I'm not a fan of them on Commander length or shorter. I do love me some mag wells though! I can understand your reasoning for not necessary liking them, I just don't carry flat based mags with my mag welled 1911. Looking forward to whatever comes next from you!!
Thank you very much for your kind words. I just began a review on the Vigil Government Model and so far it has been 100%. I dig how light it is to carry.
I have to admit because I'm a little biased that I do not care for the 2020 version. I like the true 1913 rail and the Clark style serrations. I don't care for the front cocking serrations because I feel that is what set DW apart from the norm. Totally my opinion only. Glad they brought it back. I have the commander pre 2020 version and it is a complete doll. I'm not a wealthy man monetarily and the DW is the nicest 1911 I've ever owned. I'm definitely going to swap the trigger for a Harrison medium pull for personal preference of course but to each his/her own. A police friend that is a SWAT weapons trainer recommended the Specialist in comparison to a $4000 Nighthawk that he carries which speaks volumes about DW quality.
Thanks !! RE: Grips on 1911 & most handguns , I like Pachmayr grips best . I have never tried any of the grips your have on this video . Hogue is my #2 choice for guns that Pachmayr has left off their product list & slip on for Glocks are Great !! BTW they are hard to get on & have NEVER even started to slip off.
I really like that you waited to review this gun until you carried it for a while and shot a good number of rounds through it. Too many people try to unbox and review at the same time, which is a bit ridiculous for a firearms review. Firearms require time and use to understand. No really good firearms review can happen on the day of purchase, in my opinion. Your skill as a firearms reviewer is literally the best I've seen. I also like that you have multiple people shoot the gun and add to your feedback. Excellent work!
Thank you very much. I agree with you 100%, I watch the unboxing videos and I do not understand how someone can review a firearm after having it for a day or so. I truly appreciate your kind words and support. That means a great deal to me. I try to do my best but you never know what it will be until it hits the internet and then it can be too late. Thank you again for your feedback and kind words. - Hunter
@@rangehot Believe me, if I thought I could help by being brutally critical, I would. I take bad reviews personally when it wastes my time or misinforms me. I feel like if someone is going to take the time to inform the entire world about some subject matter, they shouldn't publish it until it's at least "C" grade content. For firearms, the bar should be even higher. But, your content isn't something I could honestly criticize it's A++. I'm not trying to assume how you think, but I sense that you do very thorough and critical reviews of firearms because it's such a serious matter, potentially life and death serious. I really like that you did a full teardown of this weapon, that was an excellent touch! I do that with all my weapons from time to time, but I never thought I'd see a tear down and a review of the individual components as part of a gun review. Over the top excellent!
I truly appreciate your candor. I worry about my reviews being too long or not flashy enough but I put the content first as I believe that is paramount. You are correct, I take firearms very seriously. While they are an excellent hobby and can be enjoyed in so many ways their self defense role is what I look at the hardest. I want to be sure I am being as honest and unbiased as I can, though I freely admit which brands I prefer. Thank you again for your feedback and if you see something you think I did incorrectly please let me know so I can fix it. I would not want to waste yours or anyone else's time.
@@rangehot Your videos are neither too long or flashy. I can tell that you edit out the unnecessary and give us what is useful and informative. I subscribe to your channel because you have integrity and you provide truly professional content. Don't get me wrong, I love the old guy (intentionally not naming names) who has all the steel targets in his backyard too, but that's mainly because he's a cool character. Let's be honest, he's really not reviewing the firearms he features, he's just shooting guns and talking a little about them. That's mainly just entertainment.
I have the 2021 45 ACP Stainless Finish model of this pistol. After watching your video, I only have one question .... Does the pistol come, from the factory, with the Reduced Radius Firing Pin Stop already installed? I looked at mine, and it looks like the Reduced Radius model., but don't have anything to compare to.
Just subscribed, great review, you do it well. I have the earlier model specialist, fantastic pistol. I was disappointed when I got it (new) the barrel bushing on it was for a commander and kind of a sloppy fit. I put on a Wilson thick bushing, hand fitted tight and shoots like a dream. Replaced the S&A magwell with a Nighthawk and now it's a keeper. Anyone looking at this pistol, get it, best you are going to get on a production gun, a very close second would be a TRP.
Looks as if the changes are to reduce the cost of manufacturing. I have a pre discontinued Commander version of the Specialist and really like it. Two points of interest being it is a heavy pistol and finding a good quality leather holster is not an easy task. Milt Sparks Custom Leather made me one but the rail on the pistol is unique and it's not 100% smooth on the draw.
Adding the forward cocking serrations would add to the cost of manufacturing. Simply Rugged holsters has a couple real nice leather holsters for the Specialist
Great review. Good information and delivery. According to the DW website, the slide release is supposed to be recessed on the 2020s, but mine and yours are not recessed. Lastly the DW factory has been shut since last month so this gun may be a collectors item now. My Specialist has a manufacture date of December 2019, but is a 2020 version. Must be the first batch.
Thank you very much Todd. I prefer the standard slide release myself over the recessed one. I did not know they were supposed to be like the old ones, I appreciate the info.
Hunter, great video. I own the original Specialist in black/.45, but I love 10mm so I’m very excited about this gun. Your criticisms/critiques interested me. You explained all of them well, and front cocking serrations are just preference - I get it - I like them, but that’s just me, and you explained the value of them. I am interested in the fact that you don’t care for magwells. I completely understand the points you made, but I nearly always buy magazines with bumper pads or usually the 10 rounders from Chip McCormack. I put magwells on all my 1911’s because it increases the length of the grip. I’ve got larger than average hands, so having a little more to hold on to really helps me. So I was surprised; you’re a big guy like me. Does the magwell not help you hold the gun better? I’m 6’3”, and the magwell really helps me get a fuller grip on the gun, plus I think it does help on reloads. But that’s what’s great about 1911’s. They’re so customizable. Anyway, thanks for this review. I’m excited for this gun. Y’all stay safe.
Thank you kindly for such an amazing and thorough review. I am currently looking for the Specialist Commander in matte stainless in .45 ACP. I'd like to ask you how the hammer is holding up. Any signs of rust on it? I have had the Vigil Commander in .45 ACP for almost 2.5 years now and it's been a joy to shoot and utterly reliable and no sign of rust on the hammer. God bless.
Thank you very much. I bought the test gun from Dan Wesson after the review and the Specialist is still holding up without issue. No hammer rust but I do wipe the gun down after carrying it.
Thank you very much. I got this pistol before the 2020 announcement and the 10mm model was not ready, as a matter of fact I don't believe no test samples were available for a little while. I sure do love that 10mm.
As always great video. Love Dan Wesson even though I do not own one. I know their story. Know what they're about. I'll own one some day. Stay safe in these crazy times. Thank you for the video.
That’s one fine looking pistol and in 10 mm even better , I’m old school I love the 1911 type pistols I just wondered if they make the 460 Rowland kit for it , many thanks hope everyone is doing well atvb Steve
Dang Leo that is like asking what my favorite kitty is. As of now I have two favorites and they are the Razorback and Specialist with the Discretion a close second.
Good day Sir! I just recently acquired a DW Discretion. I am also looking at this model. One question is do they still have rusting issue on the hammer? I wanted the Stainless finish. Im sure the Duty black wont have that issue. Thank you.
Great review!!! Looking onto getting one in 10mm. I've read that the duty finish requires more attention to detail because of the finish.....can you discuss. Once again great review!!!
Thank you very much. The duty finish has held up very well on all the Dan Wessons I have reviewed and carried. Does that help? If not let me know and I will do my best to answer you Lee.
I asked for a recommendation on your other current vid. Here’s a more basic question. Is the fit, finish, and attention to detail about the same on all dw models or are there compromises made on some of the lower priced models? Thanks
In my opinion the basic Dan Wesson pistols have just as much attention to detail as their higher end models. The difference I have noticed is features not quality.
Very good review, I just subscribed to your channel. That is a strange looking extractor, any idea who makes it? Also 1911Tuner is a wealth of knowledge. He's helped me out with advice on different 1911 forums. Happy New Year.
You gotta polish the feed ramp and add an extended guide rod its the only way a 1911 will ever run right boss! While your at it add a grenade launcher to the pistol and a couple of laser sights and of course a belt fed machine gun than and only than would be perfect! LOL
I had a Dan Wesson Specialist once and for the money I wasn't very impressed with it, for a little more money you can get a Les Baer which is at a whole new level from this.

Whats going on with the rail there? Is it not a picitanny rail anymore?
It is but on the earlier Specialist only the last groove was used when mounting accessories, so Dan Wesson cleaned up the rail.

@@tigerman3 The Commander sized pistols do have a very nice balance to them.
@@rangehot 1911 lover and now a subscriber ...
I've never shot a Dan Wesson. I need to remedy that one of these days.
Yes you do need to. Love the channel Justin
Justin, you got to try one man. They are nice pistols.
A lot of great options from Dan Wesson. @Justin_Opinion please take your pick and make a video! For me the ECO, Guardian are amazing. I'd love to get either the Specialist or Wraith next. You've got a great channel sir!
will it cycle hollow points? a lot of 1911 pistols struggle with that.
Yea, any correctly built 1911 will feed hollow points unless the magazine is crap. The Specialist had zero issues with reliability with all sorts of ammo types.
Didn’t think they had this model in 4.25 inch barrel in 9mm? Didn’t see that in their website but I wish I’m wrong
@@rangehot Will do!
VERY GOOD I FROM
THAILAND
Thank you very much.
Dan Wesson makes one of my favorite 1911s and the Specialist is in the top 5 for me.
¿Which are others 4?

Aside from a Cabot Vintage Classic, man I want a Dan Wesson in 10mm! Great video Rangehot!
Thank you very much for your kind words.
Is Dan Wesson the only non custom gun maker with no MIM parts?
As far as I know, yes.
Great review, thanks! Once the local dealers have this back in stock I think I've found my first 45.
I do not think you would be disappointed.
I bought the test sample from Dan Wesson and it is still 100%
Keep it up brother!
Keep it up!
Thank you my brother.
Love mine. ..but. wonder what's causin all the rust issues I'm hearin?..I keep mine oiled and seein a hint comin on the top of the hammer....best gun channel on youtube....I've got a hunch you may know yer way around a German tree beaver also which is my second love....thanks hunter..matt from ky

Great review. Looking forward to more videos! I love Dan Wessons. A lot of nice features for the price.
Thank you very much Derek. I truly appreciate the kind words and your support.
Great review but I would have liked to see your targets at 100 yards
No real grouping to speak of but it is feasible to hit the 8"x12" steel targets at 100 yards.
A Dan Wesson is on my list, even though friends of mine talk about kimber a DW is the way to go
I would not trade a Kimber for a photo of a Dan Wesson.
I have the Specialist and a Kimber Desert Warrior Suppressed. DW all steel....no mim or cast parts.
@@rangehot That’s a great comment!!! Great review new to your channel keep up the good work👍
@@ATGMotoring Thank you very much sir, I appreciate that.
A Recon type dust cover? Oh my, I may have to readjust my priorities for my next gun purchase. That type of classic aesthetic with just a tiny bit of utility just makes me all kinds of happy.
It took me a little to get used to it but I love the utilitarian style of the pistol.
Great gun, been looking for the older model in stainless for months but no luck.
I like the original version better, hate the fcs.
Yes I really love mine Literally I have worn out 3 Les Baer’s over my LE career and so I went to the DW . My off duty carry weapon is a Nighthawk T3 and that is one fine weapon.
Excellent Ed, I appreciate your input. Thank you.
Have you had any experience with the Dan Wesson 10mm Patriot 1911,if so what do you think about it?
I have not. I have ran many Dan Wesson 1911s in 10mm and they were excellent.
@@rangehot ok Thanks
@@rangehot Im looking at a older Dan Wesson 10mm Patriot without the ramped barrel and its a pre CZ model, what do you think about the older non ramped barrel Dan Wesson 10mm 1911's?Thanks
@dickeymoore3662 I heard they were hit and miss before CZ but I cannot swear to that.
My experience with Dan Wesson has all been after CZ took ownership and those pistols are exemplary.
@@rangehot ok Thanks
Do 1911's with this type of finish hold up better than stainless steel?
Well, that is tough to say. When SS scratches it can be buffed out but the duty finish is quite hard. The SS may hold up a little better it will never have the character of a finished gun, in my opinion.
I added this 2020 Specialist in 10mm matte silver in my collection. What i notice tho is the feedramp is not on the barrel for your45? The 10mm the feed ramp is with the barrel. Does it make a difference?
The fully supported chamber with the feed ramp integrated into the barrel will give better case head support.
Nice video! That’s my next dw.i have a valor and classic they shoot great!!
Thank you very much Roy. I am sure you will not be disappointed. Looks like you have a nice collection started already.
Love my 19 model! Have a 9mm vigil waiting at my FFL when it opens back up.
I just got the Vigil in .45 in for review. Very nice pistol.
@rangehot.com will do
Thanks for another excellent review!
Dan my father's favorite were Pachnayr as well. I love the Alumagrips myself for look and feel.
I’ve read and seen on a couple of videos that Dan Wesson 1911s have issues with rusty hammers. Is that visible rust at 3:36?
I will have to go back and take a closer look. I still have the test sample and will take a hard look at it.
I believe that it is! ....... Runs to safe to check on his DW CBOB Stainless in 10 mm and his DW Specialist in 9mm.
- Hunter

Believe me, if I thought I could help by being brutally critical, I would.

Your videos are neither too long or flashy.
Yes it does. All Dan Wesson pistols to as far as I know. All I have ever reviewed and seen in person did.
Thank you very much Lorenzo.
Forward serrations are the future and the future is now.
Enhanced functions are the future and the future is now.
You are spot on.
Thank you very much for your kind words. I get the reason for a mag well it is just you have to be sure you are using mags with an extended base pad.
God bless you as well.
Thanks as always. I dig your vids, especially when its about a DAN. Just wish that you tried the 10mm, the best mm!
Thank you very much. I got this pistol before the 2020 announcement and the 10mm model was not ready, as a matter of fact I don't believe no test samples were available for a little while. I sure do love that 10mm.
Talon holsters doesn’t offer that style holster they sent you on their website. Missed opportunity talon. My search continues.
They can do custom stuff.
As always great video. Love Dan Wesson even though I do not own one. I know their story. Know what they're about. I'll own one some day. Stay safe in these crazy times. Thank you for the video.

I'm curious about the 10mm! What grain were the double tap and other rounds shot thru the barrel of this Dan Wesson.
This Specalist was a .45 Auto but I have reviewed the Razorback. rangehot.com/dan-wesson-razorback-one-round-to-rule-them-all/
That’s one fine looking pistol and in 10 mm even better , I’m old school I love the 1911 type pistols I just wondered if they make the 460 Rowland kit for it , many thanks hope everyone is doing well atvb Steve
With the ability to shoot the DoubleTap .450 SMC I don't know how much you would benefit from a 460 Rowland conversion.

Good stuff my man. Thorough, thoughtful, plus hard to go wrong with a Dan Wesson. Take care, aloha 😎🤙🏾
Thank you Michael.
What are your top 5 Dan Wesson 1911? I'm trying to decide, thank you.
Dang Leo that is like asking what my favorite kitty is. As of now I have two favorites and they are the Razorback and Specialist with the Discretion a close second.
@@rangehot great, thank you for your feedback. I was thinking about the Kodiak/Bruin or Valor... I'll definitely check the ones you mentioned
Good day Sir! I just recently acquired a DW Discretion. I am also looking at this model. One question is do they still have rusting issue on the hammer? I wanted the Stainless finish. Im sure the Duty black wont have that issue. Thank you.
Not that I have noticed as of yet.
Grest review! Good gun. Subscribe! From Russia with respect.
Thank you very much for your kind words.
I don't know if Dan Wesson machines their extractors or gets them from somewhere like EGW.
Thank you very much for your kind words.
You gotta polish the feed ramp and add an extended guide rod its the only way a 1911 will ever run right boss! While your at it add a grenade launcher to the pistol and a couple of laser sights and of course a belt fed machine gun than and only than would be perfect! LOL
Ain't that the truth my brother.
I had a Dan Wesson Specialist once and for the money I wasn't very impressed with it, for a little more money you can get a Les Baer which is at a whole new level from this.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Les Baer makes fine pistols.
