I had an issue with their customer service. There is a pretty bad looking tool mark on the frame that looks like a crack. I sent it back, waited for more than 3 months to get it back and they just responded that it's only cosmetic. Wasn't very happy considering how long I waited to get the gun back without them doing anything with it, but the gun shoots great without a single issue over 700 some rounds. Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired for sure.
My Specialist and TCP run flawlessly. My TCP is in my EDC rotation. Total faith in it although I do usually carry with Wilson mags. Specialist went right out of the box and did the Gunsite 350 class with it no issues at all. Now I do do something some folks don't do I never load more than seven rounds in the so called 8 round mags.
You have an issue with one firearm that nobody else can reproduce, so you condemn the entire company? If you had tried a few different DWs and consistently had problems with THEM, I might take this seriously. Given the totally of other reviews of DWs, I think it's safe to dismiss this point of view.
I can understand why you are upset, but 10mm guns have a reputation for being “picky” about ammo. Even Hickock .45 experienced some issues with “range ammo” because it wasn’t strong enough to consistently run the gun. With appropriate (full power” ammo it ran just fine. Dan Wesson is very specific about the breakin process…50 rounds and then clean for 300 rounds. That’s not uncommon with custom guns. Even the Browning Hi-Power was very specific about putting at least 200 rounds through it before carrying it.
You expect a person to spend 1500+ dollars on multiple firearms just to TRY to give them a chance? Idk what world you live in where money grows on trees but this is a valid complaint for a gun of that caliber not to work.
I own a Valor and a Commander Classic. My favorite guns in my collection. I have had no issues with either gun. I carry my Valor, trust it with my life.
I sold my Specialist that was having a ton of different malfunctions F2F, F2E, not going fully into battery ect, I replaced the Dan Wesson with a Colt m45a1, the fitment was better on the Dan Wesson but the Colt hasn't malfunctioned in around 2k rounds they were both using factory mags, mcormick and wilson.
Had multiple malfunctions with my DW Specialist (2014ish model year), every malfunction was caused by galling of the frame against the slide, likely caused by a tight fit, metallurgical composition and undesirable hardness of the components. I performed a flourescent dye penetrant examination under UV, took photos and sent them to DW along with an inspection report noting the details of the indications found during the examination. While they were not overly warm and consoling, the rep did confirm they were aware of said issue and sent me a shipping label. Several weeks later I received it in proper working order, along with abysmal details as to what was done to correct the issue. I ran it very wet for approximately 50 rounds and it is good to go. If I was to perform hardness testing on the frame and slide I am certain they are "out of spec". Thankfully this will never be driven hard like my Glocks and HK pistols. Extremely accurate and still my favorite pistol, believe it or not.
Ichad similar issues with my valor 10mm. Come to find it was the ammo. Magtech 180 grain and the hornady jhp I carry work flawlessly. There were several types of ammo that caused the gun to not return to battery. 1911s are finicky with ammo. I was using chip Mccormick mags.
My Valor 10mm will not function with the Speer Gold Dot 165 grain but will work fine with the 155 and 180. The hollow point cavity on the 165 grain is way bigger than the others and caused the malfunction. My P220 10mm won’t work with 165’s either.
I have 3 Dan Wessons 2 specialists 45acp 9mm and one Gaurdian 9mm they are without a doubt the best non fully custom 1911s I have ever owned . I have sent hundreds of thousands of rounds down range out the 1911 platform be it in the form of IPSIC completion to everyday range work and feel justified in my opinion. I am sorry you had a bad experience with your first 1911. I think it would be interesting to know if the the new owner of your Dan Wesson had the same problem . as far as a problems with finding a holster that would fit the specialists I used Milt Sparks wait time 8 months it was worth the wait fit perfectly as always The 1911 is not for everyone it requires maintenance to run well and practice to master but worth it when you do
Hell yeah glad yours work well. I’d love to know how the guns doing now. For all I know it could be perfect after the 1500th hundred round or if they changed some tiny piece of it. Dan Wesson seems to make good stuff, mine just wasn’t one of the good ones. Maybe I’ll take a look at the brand again in the future.
@@ArmadilloArmament When did you purchase yours? I have heard that their quality has fallen off since the parent company bought Colt. I would still buy one if I needed one and just take it to a local pistol smith (1911 specialist) to get it fixed. I had to do that with my three high end Springfield Armory 1911s.
@@johnstokes7797 I bought it around 2020 if my memory is correct so I dont think it would be affected. I get what you're saying about bringing it to a smith and having them work it over. It likely would have been a simple fix like springs, re profiling ramp, etc which realistically even I can do as ive worked one 1911's quite a bit. My issues with that though is that this is roughly a $2000 firearm and I think the company should fix the issue for free. Same thing happened with my Alchemy. Super easy fixes but for a $5000 firearm it should be spotless. Just my opinions though.
I guess I got lucky. Carried a .45 Specialist as my duty pistol for 5 years without a single issue. Used Wilson Combat 8 rnd magazines as the supplied mags wouldn’t hold slide open after last round. Hope you can get your DW running reliably.
I have the same problem with Ed Brown 8-rd. magazines not holding the slide open on the last round in all of my Springfield Armory 1911's. I use these at the range and use Wilson Combat 47D as my EDC magazines.

Completely agreed. Thats why I gave them two opportunities to fix. From what I can find their 45's seem good to go. I suspect they have issues with the 10mm cartridge.
@@ArmadilloArmament Yea it's a little weird they didn't take care of the issue. They should have replaced the whole firearm after the 2nd time. I own several DW pistols, all of which cycle and function flawlessly. I am curious, if you were advised of the break-in period of 500 rounds and to not run any form of tactical ammo. They recommend that you use ball ammo and not hollow point or coated ammo etc during the break-in period.
I had a lot of problems with my Specialist too (45acp). It’s one of the newer optic-ready models. My mag well loosened, optic plate screws backed out, slide often fails to lock back and too many failure to feed malfunctions for me to feel safe. Even slingshotting vs dropping the slide chambering the first round would fail sometimes. I kept that thing squeaky clean and lubed and the problems persisted well after 1,000 rounds. The most alarming issue was the slide catch itself. In the chance that a given magazine (DW, Ruger, and WC) would actually lock the slide back, the catch only engaged the slide notch a few millimeters. It wasn’t even close to fully seated in the slot unless it was with the Ruger mags. Was fun to shoot when it worked.
That is absolutely insane that a gun that costs as much as it does had those issues. I own a dan wesson. 2000 rds not one issue. I think that your issue was understanding the product you own. I mean this in the nicest way possible. Recoil spring, gun brake in and loads likely caused your issues. DW is a quality gun. The only customer service I have been impressed with is Les Baer. It is sad but common everywhere to have poor service lately. Then other times there is a perceived issue like in another comment left here.
This is really disheartening to watch. My father has a DW Valkyrie (9mm) that works flawlessly and that gun specifically made me want a 1911 DW. I have been looking into getting a 1911 in 45 because I wanted the classic feel and I have a 9mm already (Sig p226 legion), so I started researching. I was shocked to see 10-8 performance’s review on the DW specialist because of how many failure to feeds he had. He mentioned that the ramped barrel feed design has historically been subpar for larger caliber sizes (especially hollow point). Apparently DW started doing this a few years ago to standardize their manufacturing process… ok I guess but why change to a design that has historically been worse for 45 (and I guess 10mm in your case) and they probably know is worse? A few people on some 1911 forums also had issues with their newer DW models, and their customer service. I really really wanted a DW because their guns are eye popping, feel good in the hand, and their reputation has been good for a long time. Not really sure what to think now. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience.
Good write up. Yeah I cant in good faith recommend anything Dan Wesson related. If you want a good 1911 that is inexpensive look at Tisas-Colt-Springfield. If you want a 1911 that is more custom made and higher quality look to Nighthawk somewhat and Wilson Combat. I recommend you stay far away from Alchemy Custom Weaponry.
Owner of a Dan Wesson TCP .45ACP I have had countless jams during the first 1000 rounds with the gun Since then I have had zero jams I run it with a vickers elite Wilson combat mag Shoot federal premium ammo Runs like a damn dream The most unfortunate part of this is, the countless amount of jams and I still to this day think of selling it to get a SIG of CZ(that owns Dan Wesson)

ima just say it: Springfield is better than Kimber and dan wesson. every video ive seen on here on the specialist has failure to feed issues. unacceptable plus I had no idea about their rail, so stupid
Saying stay away from any brand because of one purchase is obtuse! I have 7 1911's of all price ranges and my DW Specialist is just as reliable as the ones that cost twice as much. I'm not saying it's better, but just as reliable. That includes 2 Colts. I live in the Hartford area and have a soft spot in my heart for Colt 1911's. I've bought expensive cars brand new that had to go back to the dealer 2-3 times before things got ironed out. The bottom line is shit happens and sometimes great companies turn out a less than usual product. So, anyone that sees this video and has their heart set on a Dan Wesson, I say buy it and enjoy it! One more thing, your audio isn't very good.

dude, that sucks. I own 3 Dan Wesson 10mm.Valor commander, Razorback, and Specialist. all stainless, all function. I had an issue with tight tolerances on the razorback, but it was worked and now runs great. The valor hates Speer gold dot 165 gr but the others take them like a champ. that is the only ammo I've had bad experience with. Sorry to hear that.
Glad yours are all working well, Ive heard great things from most peoples dan wessons. Obviously I had a bad experience but dont let it stop you from enjoying yours. Thanks for watching.
What sort of lube do you use on the slide rails?
Did you follow the break in process outlined in the manual? They tell you to shoot only 50 rounds and clean the gun all the way to 500 rounds.
Cant say I followed it to a T, but for the most part. Shoot maybe 50-100 rounds, full clean, try and diagnose issue. Rinse and repeat.
@@ArmadilloArmament I have not even watched the video, but to say you didnt follow the break in process, then there isnt any point in me watching. It doesnt matter how much you shoot, how many views you have or anything, simply cant listen. I laugh at how people just do what they want regardless of common sense instructions.
@@michaelgoad8022 Awesome. Leave.
@@michaelgoad8022weird take. I've shot over 60k round through various 1911s, mostly in the Marines. Even the brand "new" Colt M45A1 didn't need a break in period. It just worked. Wonder why DW needs a super meticulous break in
@@Chingon6969 Yep, thats the takeaway from the video really. Why am I spending 2k on a handgun and going through a thousand rounds and 2 sendbacks and the gun still doesnt work. Meanwhile my colt is flawless.
I've got three Dan Wesson's that work flawlessly
@@alrossi1641 good to hear!
Saw another video of a dude in Alaska upset because a gun shop sold him a broken 1911 10MM....hmmm 🤣
CZ ruined Dan Wesson there customer service is a joke
I own a dan wesson. 2000 rds not one issue. I think that your issue was understanding the product you own. I mean this in the nicest way possible. Recoil spring, gun brake in and loads likely caused your issues. DW is a quality gun. The only customer service I have been impressed with is Les Baer. It is sad but common everywhere to have poor service lately. Then other times there is a perceived issue like in another comment left here.
Im glad your Dan Wessons are working well. Out of curiosity, are yours in 10mm?
Owner of a Dan Wesson TCP .45ACP I have had countless jams during the first 1000 rounds with the gun
Since then I have had zero jams
I run it with a vickers elite Wilson combat mag
Shoot federal premium ammo
Runs like a damn dream
The most unfortunate part of this is, the countless amount of jams and I still to this day think of selling it to get a SIG of CZ(that owns Dan Wesson)
I guess I probably stopped caring around the 1k mark. By then I just wanted it gone. Sorry you had those issues and glad I’m not alone.
Good to know that I can expect failures w such a gorgeous gun. Hard PASS!
Thank you for the review and the comments. It’s important to review these things 💯
deletes dan Wesson from gun list***
ima just say it: Springfield is better than Kimber and dan wesson. every video ive seen on here on the specialist has failure to feed issues. unacceptable plus I had no idea about their rail, so stupid
Couldnt agree more, my springfields have been fantastic. Not the prettiest, or the tightest, but they work.
@@garyvalenti1019 I gave them 3 opportunities to send me a working gun. If you want to trust a company that can’t make a 100 +year old gun be my guest.
Polished feed ramp, different mag's, factory says it's ok, then my guess would be that your "limp wristing" , 10mm is a hand-full got to hold it tight.
I respectfully disagree.
Fun fact CZ owns Dan Wesson and Colt
Yep
I have heard multiple problems with DW 10mm guns only. Never on a 45acp. It seems like a 10mm Dan Wesson problem. I would never buy a DW 10mm after the problems I’ve seen in other videos. The 45 caliber, flawless.. it’s strange..
100% agree
Gave up on trying to hear the video even with volume to the max. Spring for a remote mike. DW's are great guns.......
I appreciate the feedback and will try to do better!
try the TRP not the operator just the TRP
My buddy has a regular TRP, NOT the new ones though. Great guns. New TRP's have a bit of MIM parts but im assuming are still good. Ill have to snag one eventually.
Do you know what you're doing? Just curious. Because almost like no one has issues with DW firearms after the break in period. And if the company can't replicate it. Hmmmmm
You think I bought a $2000 gun and $1000 of ammo to send it back 3 times and sell it at a loss? When 1911's are my favorite firearms?
Seen it happen before@ArmadilloArmament
So you gave the gun to someone else for 1900 that had an issue this is what the problem is buying used firearms.
@@alrossi1641 it went to a friend of mine at my local store that was aware of the issues. He had their Kodiak and liked Dan Wesson.
You must be kidding. I have had a Pointman and second DW for years and they are as good as Wilson Combat, Nighthawk or any other custom and at a fraction of the price.
Glad yours is working well! My experience is unfortunately true. However, it looks like its more an issue with 10mm than any other caliber.
You should try Kimber they are the best.
Im good.
NOT Once do you mention the BREAK-IN period. I have a couple of DW's, One had a few jams until after the Break-in and the other has been flawless, I have had some Brand New Gen 5 Glocks that had to be sent back to factory twice with no explanation. So according to your philosophy, Glocks are Junk, Stay away from them..... Tighter tolerances require a different approach, Most custom shops actually shoot their guns up to 100 or more rounds usually with quality ammo and mags before they do a final inspection and cleaning before it goes out the door.
Imagine thinking Dan Wesson is a tight tolerance 1911 LMAO.
YUP!!!! Both of them are real tight!!! Your village called looking for you, they want their idiot back pronto!!!!@@ArmadilloArmament
The comment section highly disagrees with you, as do I
You're allowed to have your own opinions, albeit wrong ones.
Glad I didn’t subscribe…
Gonna cry?
Speak up!!
This video makes me absolutely realize that every 1911 no matter how expensive is trash, and a waste of money
Sounds like someone with a high point on layaway.
Your that 1 in a million customer ...... but not buy DW on your opinion .... No WAY ... then continue to say dont listen to criticism of Colt....lol your butt hurt and it shows. All of my DW run flawlessly. Get over it if your gun was a full custom build and did that yes. But if its something fixable , fix your gun and better luck next time. For every negative complaint i see on Daw i see hundreds of A+ reviews. I once saw where an Ed Brown wasnt 100 % guess they are junk too 😂
Cope and seethe.
