    Easily one of the best instructional channels I have seen! Your care in getting the camera angle so we can see what you are doing and see how to manipulate difficult to get to parts is something I greatly appreciate and sets you apart from other channels. But it's your clear and concise verbal additions that make it the best. I'm never left trying to interpret or wondering to myself what you meant, it's truly unique in this type of channel. I am a fan and I suspect a lot of thought and work goes into a short video like this, thank you Sir!

    I need to do this. I bought a 95 Grand Cherokee and when I pulled the parking brake lever it just came up with no resistance. When I got around to checking the brakes I was shocked to discover there weren't any! It had new rear disc brakes but when I pulled the rotor/drum off there was NOTHING inside. Not a spring, Not a stud. Nothing! :-O

      Sorry for the late response but it should compress no problem without opening the bleed valve. The caliper piston may be locked up in which case you might have to replace it if the piston wont push back in.

    I always had trouble keeping my parking brake mechanical actuator levers from seizing with rust no matter what lubricant I used ... until I tried Permatex ultra ceramic brake lubricant (purple).
    Those levers are located where the end of the cable is connected to a hook shape.
    Have you ever noticed this issue on your 96 ZJ (mine was a 98 ZJ 4.0 Laredo)?

      ManicMechanic007 no I have 3 ZJs and never had that problem. I also live in the D.C area so rust really isnt an issue. I also try to remember to use my parking brake often to keep the parts from siezing up so thing like that dont happen

    Doing my p brake today. Had to get a new cable and figured how to get out. Now, once get clips and springs on can I adj the screw and set the rotor on and pre set the tension to get it close? If I screw it a bit, put on rotor to see if any resistance right away then set brake so I know it is pretty close then finish with final tension on the screw after I get tire on? I remember the e brake test for the zhummer, in the Army, was to set brake and put in drive. If brake holds it is properly set.

      Jack'll Fix It when i was finished I first tested by using just the rotor by setting the parking brake and turning the rotor by hand. It wouldn't budge so I put the wheels back on and was able to spin the tire with the parking brake engaged.
      I adjusted the starwheel tighter, and and tried again and I was not able to spin the tire anymore.
      I then put it on the ground and set the parking brake with the vehichle in drive and my Jeep started inching forward and I could smell brakes.
      so I backed the brake shoes off a little just enough so I couldnt spin the tire by hand, set the parking then put the Jeep in neutral facing down hill and it wouldnt move... which was good enough for me.
      It didnt matter how tight I adjusted the starwheel to press the shoes against the inside of the rotor, my Jeep would still pull forward💪..
      maybe its the 4×4 or perfectly maintained 5.2 engine and trans. or maybe its the aftermarket rotors I used, my jeep would pull with the parking brake set and transmission in drive. so I check mine on an incline/decline with the parking brake set and transmission in neutral.
      Its functional and It was good enough to pass inspection!

      @@barricadegarage5361 well, once went thru a nut roll finding a wheel stud to fit I spent forever trying to get those 2 clips with pins. On WJ shoes there is an indent right where the clip goes PITA! I said screw it and compressed the clips. I was pjshing with all I had and those buggers would not squeeze down for pin. Definitly need 3 or 4 hands. Spring, well, said screw it and used the old one the new one wasnt stretching. Curved needle vice grip would have helped. Then redid the other side because the adj wheele came off the shoes. Couple down turns on star and can go drive and reverse and wont move. There is a lot of torque so possibly could roll with brake on going from park to reverse but it does work now. Had to fix, never needed a p brake but TX law, 1995 states cars left unattended must have p brake on.

    I'm a little confused. In your vid you show rear brakes being done but once you put the rear shoes and pads on you put a rotor over that. I have drums which go over my rear shoes on a 94 zj. Can I use slotted rotors like you on the back, or am I stuck using drums which look awful.

    • @barricadegarage5361
      @barricadegarage5361  5 років тому +2

      My '96 has disc brakes all around. It sounds like you have rear drum brakes and that means either you or the previous owner switched the axle because all ZJs came from the factory with 4wheel disc brakes

      Angel F : I had a problem last winter where my jeep would go forward but not reverse total lockup. Someone on a forum said to check the ebrake shoes. So you might have a lot of rust like I did. And shout out to Barricade Garage for posting this video.

    • @wobblesandcars
      @wobblesandcars 5 років тому

      Wanted to add something here, really good preventative maintenance, if you replace your ebrake shoes, also take out the cam/lever. This webpage shows a full tutorial along with pictures. www.jeepslimited.com/index.php/write-ups/drivetrain/e-brake-cam-lever-replacement-zj
      The cam/lever are what push the ebrake shoes out to the rotor/drum when you pull the ebrake. The cam/lever like to seize together with rust and it causes issues. My ebrake shoes were CONSISTENTLY applied even when my ebrake lever was down which caused me not to be able to reverse. So check them and clean them up. 5 minutes extra when doing the shoes will save a HUGE headache
